Omori Critique: A Narrative Marvel

  • Man, what is there to say. This title is easily one of the best story-rich games I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. To me, Omori is less a game and more of a story. If you don't mind old-school JRPG combat, then there is nothing about this game that you will not enjoy. Heck, even if you don't like the combat, this title is worth playing for the narrative alone. While it came out in the last days of 2020, I would say Omori is easily one of the best games of 2021, hands down.

    I actually found that Aubrey pushing Basil into the lake/pond as a way to show how easily mistakes and moments of anger can lead to deadly consequences like Sunny and Basil drowning. I think it drew a parallel between between what happened with Sunny and Mari.

    • @The_Moai_God
      @The_Moai_God ปีที่แล้ว +128

      I agree! It also might set up that after the ‘good’ ending, Aubrey will hopefully be able to forgive Sunny seeing as she almost caused the death of a friend and will be able to understand how sunny must’ve felt as a result.

    • @Tetra_Seiya
      @Tetra_Seiya ปีที่แล้ว +65

      Yeah definitely. The only thing that separated her from becoming "Sunny female ver." was Hero. Anger can cause confusion and push you to doing things you'll normally never even think of doing. Just like how sunny acted in him fighting Mari and Basil, being backed into a corner will activate your fight or flight.
      Hopefully, Aubrey will notice this. Though with how perceptive she is of Sunny (as shown in the swing cutscene in one day left), she'll most likely forgive him

      I agree, I almost wish this happened in Headspace instead because this is how I imagine Omori would think their exchange would go. Sunny confronts Mari, asking why she's pushing him so hard. Sunny, in a rage, throws his violin and screams "GET AWAY FROM ME!" and pushes Mari down the stairs. Sunny instantly realises this was a huge mistake and comes back down from rage. Sunny would explain to his friends that it was all an accident, and his friends would yell at them saying things as "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!! YOU KILLED HER!"

    Ya know I never thought of Omori as evil. He's the main antagonist, yes, but there's a difference between antagonistic and evil. Sunny specifically created Omori and the headspace as a means of coping. It's only natural for Omori to keep the truth from Sunny bc that was literally what he was created to do.

      Omori IS evil. Sure, he might have started as a coping mechanism along Headspace and he might look like he wants to protect Sunny from anything that might hurt him but he will go as far as completely disassociate and end Sunny's life just so he can keep his escapism forever.
      You give him an inch and Omori takes a mile. He is a tumor in Sunny's subconscious that has grown out of control and needs to be removed.

      As a Star Wars fan, I have to compare your claim to the idea that Darth Vader is evil. Yes, Vader did some awful things, and yes, some of those things were arguably unforgivable. But to an extent, he was just following the only path he could see. He was manipulated his whole life to become the fearsome antagonist we all know, and any choices he made himself were ultimately part of that manipulation. At least until his son freed him.
      Omori's "evil" appearance is not due to his nature alone. He was born to protect Sunny, but the latter willingly gave him more power than necessary for that purpose. Sunny made a godlike character in his dream world to repress the truth of Mari's death, and Omori went along with the plan because he had no other way to be. Only when Sunny decides to face the truth does Omori become hostile toward him. It's a desperate reaction on Omori's part: "If I can't protect you, I'll just have to kill you instead."

  • @PyrpleWyrm
    @PyrpleWyrm ปีที่แล้ว +170

    One thing I just realized in regards the Hero is that he was reeeeeally lucky that Kel was his brother. Sunny became a Hikikomori after Mari's death but Hero did mostly the same thing for the year until Kel reached out too him. If Kel was just another friend to Hero or anyone else was Hero's sibling in that situation there no telling what would have happened to him.

      Not to mention the obvious parallels with Mari's death

  • @mmmirei
    @mmmirei ปีที่แล้ว +247

    Slight spoilers
    I noticed that in Sunny’s memory house after the Basil fight, all of the things he has dialog for are in first person. Through the whole game, it is always “you”. “It’s a long way down. Do *you* want to jump?” “*You* and your friends feel like new!” etc. this is how Sunny interacts with everything, in a sort of detached way. But in the memory house, he talks about things in first person. Since this memory house seems to be from before Mari died, this might be somehow showing that after her death, Sunny started to disassociate in some way. I just really love seeing Sunny talk about all the things in his house with so much familiarity, unlike what he usually does.

    • @taskeen777
      @taskeen777 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That's so plausible. I think the dialogues in second person also brought out his generally passive nature in life

      I didn't think it was a dream yet and figured he's finally opening up to the player. Instead of 'an old computer' its now 'dad's old computer' and things like that. The fridge now has leftovers - I suspect there always was food once i saw that and that sunny must of been like me as a kid: to see leftovers, it's something gross I don't like or don't have a craving for, and then lament there's no food. The fridge might as well be empty.

    I agree that Day 2 is probably the weakest real world section, but I don't think you're doing the part where Sunny overcomes his fear of water justice. While the fight itself isn't that remarkable, I think it's my favorite part of the day (aside from the part at the graveyard), since it's the first time that I think Sunny's grief for Mari is ever conveyed in the game. The way you try in vain to chase her and reunite with her even despite your fears reminds me of Chapter 6 from Mother 3, if you've ever played that. The score really helps too

    I think that Omori really means something special to me because I moved away from a decently large friend group back in 2018. I've always had trouble with making friends and I haven't really made any real success in my new home yet. I can still keep in touch with my friends through Discord, but I feel like an outside observer. So seeing Sunny interacting with Kel like that for the first time in 4 years really hits hard for me.
    Edit: I would also like to say that I can really relate to Hero's inability to say no to people. I don't like disappointing people or literally causing anyone to have any sort of negative reaction because of me. So if someone asks me to do something, the option of no causes me stress.

    Ah jes... Omori is one of the few Games, that put me in an emotional state for more than just a few hours. It gave me the feeling of Sunny himself, as if they where my own, as I have to feel the way he does. As I am part of the world and lost so many well know friends. The Game really did his best in sucking you up. And even if the main theme is about sunny forgives himself I also think that a huge part of the narrative is the bond of the friendship group that grew much more stronger in the last three days than it was ever before, though I am sad that Sunny has to leave his friends, because he is moving out, that's the thing that helped him the most. And though I belive that they forgave all of them, it still would had been nice if all five of them stood at the grave in the picture of the true End, to show this. I just hope, even if it may take some months, that they will find a way to spent time together again. That they manage to make old and new memories together again. I hope it in the deepest of my heart and so long, at least that the other four in Faraway Town can finally be there for each other. They all need this, after four years of what happend

    I had just realized something near the start of the game. When Sunny is going down the stairs and is confronted by Something, this fear is not only him being scared of the height of the stairs, but what he had did to Mari. Something also pushing him down the stairs to attack him is referencing how he had pushed Mari down the stairs and killed her, which is also why Something's face is at the end of the stairwell. He has trauma with the end of the stairs specifically because that's when Sunny realized Mari was actually dead.

    Amazing job on the analysis and the way to pour it all into a video format that kept being interesting for 2 entire hours! There's a plethora of details inside that game that went over my head, which just goes to show you spent way more time on the topic then a regular player would.
    While I enjoyed most of the video, I guess it'd be fair to point out the things that bothered me, just in case I wasn't alone on this. The parts where you were berating Sunny were pretty passionate, and I'm not sure your mic quality could catch up with the intensity of your emotion. I'm not a professional when it comes to sound, and this is a mere thought I had from watching the video just once, but it stood out for some reason or another. Then again, I wouldn't immediately count this as a negative, since it adds authenticity to the whole deal. And I must recognize most of the criticism Sunny buries himself under can be taken personally, so in those berating parts your use of the word "you" in an agressive tone felt like a personal attack... hence why I think it was a really nice touch that in the final fight, when we're reaching the harsher and darkest point of that attack, with things as bad as suicide talk, the change from "you" to "he/him" was appreciated.
    I must admit re-visiting the story of this game with the full knowledge of the entire plot made it special in a complete different way, and you clearly remember your own thoughts from when you experienced this game for the first time, with full naivety and ignorance of the depressing topics that were laying underneath. It's interesting, albeit very sad and hard to replay. I did shed a tear or two on the duration of the video, so if your goal was to make us experience once more the sadness we originally felt while playing Omori, I'd say "congratulations".
    Thanks for the video! Really looking forward to what you come up with next. Your channel makes me wish I had a group of close friends I could always count on, just so I could recommend them this critique.

      I wanted to start by thanking you for the detailed comment! It means more to me than I can express merely through text how much I appreciated your ending remark. So thanks again! It didn't cross my mind that anyone might be offended by the use of you, so I apologize for any suffering that may have caused. I'll keep that in mind for any future videos. The main goal, much like all of my content, is to give the viewer a stronger perspective of the game. I want to put into words why they may have liked the game or even challenge some of their preconceived notions of the title. I will admit, a major side goal of mine was to try and express all the emotions Omori made me feel. I believe an effective critique wouldn't be complete without it. So it makes me very happy to hear I was able to express that because I wasn't sure I managed to accomplish that. In regards to your last comment, I'm just a guy making stupidly long videos that no one in their right mind would finish, but your comment caused me a great amount of joy. In a way, I'd like to think that makes us friends. I hope I can continue to create content that you enjoy.

I thought I was gonna see Sunny's friends' reaction to what he's gonna say, but I just saw the credits after that. I even searched it if that really was it, but it really was the end. Now I have been thinking about the story for at least a day now, I just can't get it off my mind. Omori truly is one of the best games out there

    I was a little worried when I saw you had less than 1k subs, often videos by people with such a small audience can be bad and it's a long video... but it was pretty good, you probably deserve more like 10k~ at least.
    By the way, fun fact about the Truth sequence. I actually guessed this twist during the first fear boss, I picked up on the symbolism and was like "Oh I see what's goin on here you can't fool me game! I played Silent Hill 2!", and while I was right... that whole thing felt like it was the game rubbing it in my face, showing me just how right I was. Figuring out the twist didn't make the twist any less effective or painful. A part of it really is the details, the context surrounding it. Unlike James even, he didn't kill her because she was suffering from a horrible disease, treating him horribly because of it, and because it was destroying his life... he did it cuz he was mad cuz playing the violin was too hard and he was tired of it. Sure, it was because it was so stressful and it really was too much for him, but at the end of the day while we can understand his actions, it makes sense for Sunny of all people to see what he did as just what you said; he killed her cuz it got in the way of his stupid cartoons. I'd hate myself and repress all that too. I really do think that aspect of it is a big thing too, since there's little in the game where Sunny tries to justify what happened. I think the story in the library about the building of the treehouse, where he just wanted to be "moral support" but ends up helping anyway exemplifies this. He doesn't do it cuz he's pressured, but because, as he says, he knows he really should. The treehouse is for everyone. Sunny is the kind of guy who has those feelings of just wanting to relax and not put a lot of effort into things, but can feel really bad about it and in the end ends up doing what he knows he should anyway. It's this nature that led to both hating himself for what happened, as well as finding the strength to tell his friends what he did at the end. He doesn't WANT to do it, but he knows he has to.
    Also, I think it ending without knowing whether or not they forgive him is more than just it not being what the story is about. I mean, Sunny doesn't know that either, but he's still gotta do it. If the game told you, it would take away the fear of that uncertainty that Sunny is feeling. You have to carry on without knowing happened, like Sunny has to go forward with it without knowing what will happen.

    This is a criminally underviewed channel/video. I cannot believe how few views this has. I finished this game about two weeks ago and have been trying to collect my thoughts around it since, trying to articulate how I feel about it so I can tell people to go and experience this game (you don't simply play Omori after all, you experience it). You nailed it.
    The sheer dynamic feelings you have while playing this game is nothing short of a marvel. Headbopping to the music, to "GOD I HATE THAT SWEETHEART," to being creeped the hell out by everything inside Humphrey, feeling nostalgic while Sunny and his friends finally come back together, being unsettled by Something, and bawling when you visit Mari's grave with Hero, to wanting to belt him across the face when he puts on Mr. Jawsome's tie. Most JRPGs have been condensed to "He evil, you good, go kill!" with some shallow emotional beats because a party member you just met dies or something, but this runs the entire range and does it all remarkably. And you also presented all this remarkably.

    Incredible video. It's really surprising that it only has 7k views. You've a ton of work into this.
    Honestly, Sunny is a character that I relate to a lot, not that I've been through stuff even half as messed up as he has, but I feel really identified with his defense mechanisms. How he puts himself in this imaginary ideal world where everything stops if he (well, not he actually but Omori) doesn't feel right. Even though some sections become a bit tedious, I really like the feeling of looming darkness that hides behind every "nice" dream before you enter blackspace.
    I would've liked it more if the corruption of headspace was something more than a bunch of monsters on certain locations in the hikkikomori route. But I still loved every single second of both routes of this game.

    Hey, I want to say I really appreciated the fact that you valued my time when making this. You made a video that was over 2h in length but you didn't waste, like some other creators, time just retelling bit by bit what happens in Headspace or even Faraway, and you skipped small/inconsequential story beats that didn't need to be mentioned- and then on top of that I really respect the fact that you actually critiqued and interpreted things. Thank you for that and I wish more creators made videos like you did here.

    This was a rollercoaster to watch, and first off: Yes, you did manage to capture more than a smidge of the emotion OMORI made me feel. This was brilliant. Secondly, your criticisms are valid. However, my cripplingly sentimental self objects to all of them as they say something is wrong with my baby (I wonder why I love OMORI so much, surely it's not my crippling sentimentality combined with seeing so much of myself in the story). That is completely the rose tinted glasses talking, so for anyone else, what you said was flawed is true.

    I'm glad someone was even halfway able to put into words how much I want to gush over the Omori fight at the end. By definition it is a final boss, but calling it that feels like a disservice to the brilliant way it culminates Sunny struggling to finally overcome his demons.
    What starts are a valiant final showdown to put an end to everything is slowly realised by the player to even after all this progress made by Sunny, to be gruelling and impossible. You want so badly to win and for Sunny to finally be at peace but no matter how many times you strike him down, Omori will not succumb, the trait of Omori that once aided you in your adventures through headspace now preventing you from moving on. The guilt and pain that Omori represents was given too much power and now, even using everything you have, Sunny can't overcome it.
    The intensely emotional violin that plays perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the fight, it's both encouraging like the music itself is spurring Sunny on, as well as sounding haunting like there's little hope, both at the same time. The fact that it's a violin, Sunny's instrument that caused all the torment is so thematically fitting. Mari pushed him too hard to the point where practicing physically hurt Sunny, leading to him destroying the violin and causing all the torment over the past four years. The violin is both reminiscent of Mari, the voice always guiding and supporting him, his friends who gifted it to Sunny and mean the world to him, as well as the physical and immense mental pain that playing and then destroying the instrument caused.
    Each line uttered by Omori, Sunny's darkest thoughts that have plagued him for years, is an emotional hammer blow. Of course they're largely irrational and self-hateful, but that's what immense guilt does to someone. In my opinion the hardest hitting ones were the sequence of "Mari loved you and you killed her" through to "You loved her and you killed her" because they're all objectively true statements that anyone in Sunny's situation would be haunted by every day. Accident or not, you destroyed everything surrounding Mari and left scars on your friends that will never fade. The battle shows us the thoughts that Sunny is bombarded with every waking hour, and add to not only a very emotionally intense fight, but flesh out more of how his day to day life is affected, as if the terrifying hallucinations and such weren't bad enough.
    I really like this game. Like many I have some issues with it that for me personally stop me from ranking it among my favourites of all time, but the Omori fight is absolutely perfect and is such a beautifully strong climax to cap off a brilliantly told story.

    I think the reason why headspace seems to be without plot is because it gives into the idea that headspace feels more fake and flat after experiencing the real world. Which the idea of being stuck in headspace four years (or even more) in a loop sound more horrific.

    • @Engel_Regime
      @Engel_Regime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand the argument that headspace is meant to be this magical fantasy that helps Sunny escape from reality. Those sections of the game fulfill that purpose wonderfully. However, I have to ask, is it enjoyable for the player? I found that while the latter headspace sections are not poorly written, they really drag. I wanted to discover the underlying secrets of the game, and the lack of any new clues from day two only heightened this. It would be a different story if headspace linked back to some of the developments in the real world or if Sunny's real world experiences altered headspace, but they don't. At least not in a significant way.

    • @phantoms_eye
      @phantoms_eye 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Engel_Regime Ya honestly it would be a lot better if the influence of the real world leaked into headspace to give both playthroughs (real world playthrough and the hikikomori route) a bigger difference. However it is slightly unfair in my opinion given that the a big choice of the game is to choose which world feels more real to the player. Though it's true the headspace seems to be a drag when not interested in it and probably should have left a lot of things (mostly puzzles or pathways) cut off as extra but unnecessary. It's my view though and I totally get yours. I'm just sharing my views and thanks for sharing your views as well. Playing this game has actually left a impact on me no game has before. The story, is simply put, one of the greatest stories I have ever played in the past decade and has many powerful messages that can only be expressed through the interactive nature of video games. Engel said in the black space section that sunny hates basil. I don't think sunny hates basil per se, but rather the trauma basil represents, having played a role in Mari's death. Basil represents sunny not being able to make peace with his actions, while doubling as the reason sunny can't be honest about Mari's death, and that is what Sunny resents.

    Because we read many texts in the lost library that he hated doing things that require too much effort. That's probably more out of his lack of confidence. It would make sense of him to snap out on mari. It's usually the most passive people who lash out a little too far.
    On top of that, younger siblings who are super close to their elder ones struggle with autonomy a lot, since their messes are taken care of usually.

    Honestly i kinda like the references to sunny's toys and books because i find it really funny and logical, lets remember that sunny is a kid and kids fantasize about everything they see in their daily life, and that everyones dreams are inspired by real life memories, so it makes sense that his dreams are just child like real concepts. I mean the food piramid book being literaly an egypt map made of food with piramids and all, its hilarious. I feels it just a little fact to remind us that after all, sunny its just a kid
