      Yeah the opinions on it will always be all over the place since so many people got it for 1$ via gamepass. By that standard it's more than worth it and extremely great content for your money. That and it is a decent immitation of something we've all been missing.

    I feel like a major failure when it comes to story is how the board is just so bland of an antagonistic force. they're so incompetent that siding with never seems worth it and since the entire game is shoving in your face how shitty the capitalism is that it just seems out of place to ever go against the direction the story starts you off as. imagine playing fallout NV but the legion doesn't seem threatening at all and you are only ever encouraged to help the NCR.
    No Mr. House, no wild card. there just aren't any stakes and honestly I just think that the overall tone is just way too overly silly and comedy focused that there is no real reason to care about what happens since the story is more about obsidian going on and on about how capitalism sucks rather then having an interesting and engaging story

    • @Engel_Regime
      @Engel_Regime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I basically agree with everything you're saying here. The message of the game is clearly big money corporations are bad for society as a whole. There's very little reason to actually choose to side with the board. Phineas is clearly the good guy and the board is evil. The tone of the game isn't something I go over, but I think you hit the nail on its head. The game is desperately trying to be funny and witty. It does achieve this, but at the cost of the board being portrayed as incompetent fools. Thanks for the comment. I enjoyed reading it.

      I always thought Obsidian had this problem at least going back to New Vegas. They did well with giving you middle options but the NCR vs Legion never felt like much of a choice as it should have. In an apocalyptic scenario, strong central leadership is a benefit, but they made the Legion so blandly evil by having them crucify and enslave people. And the counter was that the NCR was incompetent.... yeah but are they enslaving people? There was clearly a good and a bad choice instead of two shades of gray like people have previously claimed a long time ago.
      I wasn't expecting any morally gray choices here either, and I was proven right. Obsidian makes decent games, but the mods are what make them great RPGs.

    • @LOL60345
      @LOL60345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alexs1640 id disagree, at least i got the impression that the ncr DEFINETLY enslaves people, through land ownership, and their ever present demands for protection money (aka ""taxes""). their society is also failing already, being utterly corrupted, and will most likely collapse sooner or later. also dont forget about their conscription, they send thousands of settlers kids to die in far away lands to protect the governments interests.

    • @alexs1640
      @alexs1640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@LOL60345 sure, and that's representative of extreme capitalism. But which would you rather be enslaved to, wages where you earn just enough to pay for the taxes to keep your land but are stuck working just to survive or literal slavery where you earn nothing and have no freedom and can be killed for little or no reason? The Legion also force people to join them, so it feels like the same issue, so I'm not sure there's even a case for either side on this one. Only point to give the Legion is that they deal with bandits pretty well so their territory is safer. But that still doesn't absolve them of slavery and crucifixion.
      Those are two things that are some of the worst thing you can do to a person. An overstretched NCR that can't police its own territory so it falls to incompetence isn't the equal of actual slavery and torture.

    • @shadowmaydawn
      @shadowmaydawn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexs1640 What also adds to this is that you have far more interaction with the NCR than the Legion and the characters in the NCR are more relatable and sympathetic while the legion's NPCs are either single-mindedly zealous or cartoonishly evil or both.
      "An overstretched NCR that can't police its own territory so it falls to incompetence isn't the equal of actual slavery and torture."
      And in your conversation with Legate at the final battle, your character can persuade them to give up the fight by reasoning with them that if they succeed in conquering all the west then they will inherit the same problem of maintaining control over the region.

    That was my exact opinion as well - it's aesthetics without any filler to sustain them - the writing isn't good enough to sustain its narrative choices & design, the world design is nonsensical and Fallout lite without exploring WHY things look the way they do, and it keeps beating you over the head with CORPORATIONS BAD but doesn't present a corporaton dystopia that would actually make you ponder its message. Comedic corporate incompetence =/= make the point that corporations bad bc some of the things are so idiotic as to be immersion breaking. I'm so mad it had SO MUCH potential but they stuck to shallow waters to get that sweet sweet Fallout money instead of doing something unique and deep.

      Outer Worlds is a very safe game. The setting is strong but ultimately hollow because there's nothing really there to accompany it. There is no history or any form of world-building. Instead, this is replaced mostly by humor that at times is reminiscent of New Vegas. There definitely are times where the game is funny, but as you stated, often it makes the antagonists of the plot look like buffoons or discredits every faction the game creates. This is a bit of a problem for obvious reasons. The integrity of many of the more malicious factions is thrown out the window to provide a cheap laugh more often than not. This isn't believable yet alone realistic because people do not become super-rich or influential through luck alone. It requires ruthlessness and intelligence in order to amass extreme amounts of wealth and maintain it. I don't think anyone would argue the board isn't ruthless, however, whether they are intelligent is a whole other issue. Ultimately, this helped create a game that road the hype of being made by some of the original Fallout developers and being produced by Obsidian. However, it never came close to meeting those expectations and ended up being a pretty hollow product. Honestly, it does frighten me a little on how well the game was received. Makes you wonder just how susceptible we are to brands and nostalgia. Thank you for the comment!

    I tried doing a genocide run of the game once upon a time, but I stopped because I was tired of not being able to kill quest-related NPCs that were locked behind doors that couldn’t be opened without a quest item... and they ARE NOT loot-able off the original quest-giver’s corpse as the game doesn’t spawn the item in their inventory until the quest is accepted.
    So I currently have a save file where a genocidal baseball bat-wielding clown is forever staring down a woman sitting in a containment cell behind indestructible glass, an unresponsive intercom, and a locked door that I can neither hack, lockpick, blow up, nor beat down.
    Fuck this shit.

    My general thoughts exactly. Good potential and usually funny, decent characters, and quite pretty (I don't much like the cartoonish aesthetic personally but that doesn't mean it wasn't pretty) but mediocre combat and... ngl a story beat out by FO4. Like at least the Institute has some things going for it???
    The combat is very easily broken. I've heard tell of people getting up to 3,000+ dmg with a plasma rifle and I myself got roughly 2,000 with a Dead Eye. Crunchy.
    I think also our cinnamon roll Parvati is a favourite partially because Aces don't see much representation, and that is what she be. She's likeable and ace in a way that's understandable to everyone. Connected to this, I really remember the dialogue options that allowed you to say that your character was ace too, aro even. That's not something I've ever seen in a game really - or not one on this scale anyway.
    The Outer Worlds is not a bad game. It's just not a memorable one :(
    Sadly I think the hype from NV got to it. One could even say that the game was rigged from the start.

    The first 10 hours I spent playing this game were amazing. I thought it was gonna be my new binge game. I cleared *everything* in Edgewater, spent lots of time tinkering and modifying my weapons and armor, and was getting invested in Max's storyline. I was so expectant of the game to keep delivering those moments of wonder. And then it just...stopped. The characters I met meant less to me, their personality and goals were so shallow and surface level. There was no new weapons, armor, or mods I was getting. No new ammo or guns. Just more of the same. I kept expecting the game to expand into this web of different factions and groups vying for control while the board attempted to keep everything the same. But it just kept letting me down. I learned the extensiveness of the "Board" was confined to one chick who you have 3 convos with. The choices I made during missions didn't matter and had no consequences. Everything just starts to feel so hollow. And then, a whopping 8 quests into the main story, and the game is OVER. After eight fucking quests. This game was a monumental letdown. The Shallow Worlds, indeed.

    Obsidian desperately needs to learn 2 things about choice:
    1. Meaningful choice is about testing beliefs, not just expressing existing beliefs over and over again. The game itself needs to prompt you to think, otherwise it's no better than a blank sheet of paper and a pen.
    2. Character expression needs to reflected in the player experience. Too many RPGs just have menu options to instantly achieve your goal and avoid token combat and "roleplaying" is just choosing which subset of these are available. This fails on every level: it's not interesting to play, it doesn't add replayability, it makes not playing the game a reward, and it utterly fails to deliver the experience of being that type of character. The fact that it says "Science" instead of "Persuade" or "Engineering" means nothing: they're all just "smarty person words to instantly get what I want".

    I'll update when you get to gameplay, but I feel like the writing really shouldn't go unnoticed. I enjoyed flirting with Gladys everytime we spoke to try and get deals. Sanjar genuinely made me laugh and I actually made sure Monarch was better off when I finished because I cared enough to cover my bases there and searched every nook and cranny to minimize bloodshed. And I wish Martin had a real storyline. There's a dialog option that appear when you leave and comeback where your character literally is like "hey Martin, what's up with you?" Not the exact wording but it not only is a nice change in dialog in general with NPCs but it's also an exceptional example of Obsidian being able to add dialog choices that define your character's personality. Again there's more examples of that with Sanjar who also goes through character development and rifts with your character depending on what you say. Again this game isn't AMAZING but I person enjoyed it. I call it an amazing blueprint because there's is so much good material, the game kinda opens itself up to a sequel being made but it strikes me as a oner. So hopefully they can take what worked here and refine it for the next release.

      So on gameplay I pretty much agree. Skipping my essay length of digression I saw what they tried to do with companions boosting your stats, I think it should have essentially been easier eggs. Like I agree it's weird Felix boosts your persuasion but when you take his personality into account it makes more sense. He's an extremely likeable guy who doesn't try to start shit. He's the kind of person you see shooting the shit with a drink and game or he can have albeit surface level, but serious discussions. So back to my example using Felix, on the Grounbreaker if you fail the speech check to get the crew to let you in AND surrender he comes in with the back up and gets them to let you in at least.

    Very well put together video man. I do agree with some of your points like companions character vs there gameplay. But I personally love The Outer Worlds for actually doing what not many story driven RPG's do in actually creating a world with lots of potential beyond just giving a Codex.
    I mean yes the game is not a massive accomplishment like New Vegas, but it has created a foundation to have a game set in a world to be so, and that is what makes many people praise it. It might not be the big critique of all things bad about corporations like expected, but it's got a foundation to eventually be and as for a first installment it very much is a fun experience on its own.
    At the end of the day, Obsidian has worked hard to finally break out and if Outer Worlds was their ticket to the big time like now, then I can't help but feel that the game has done more good than bad.

    I remember how this game was endlessly hyped up before it's release. After it officially went public, however, there was...
    ...
    ...practically nothing, outside of some people simping for it it out of spite. After exploring the Outer Worlds myself, I could see why; the story's aesop (while timely) felt much too forced, the exploration wasn't rewarding, the equipment and inventory were uninspired, and (my biggest issue/complaint) the barebones combat left me mentally starved (Honestly, I feel like I could write an entire paragraph or two on it.) There were some flashes of inspiration, but they just weren't worth dwelling on since they were drowned out by a sea of minimal effort.
    In short, Obsidian Entertainment's "The Outer Worlds" was *_boring,_* and it's no anagnorisis that the reason it sold so well was it's timing.

    To be fair, 70 years is a long-ass time for a society. Case in point, communism behind the Iron Curtain. It was an absolutely broken system that completely strayed from its ideological roots and became a dictatorship with varying levels of personal freedom depending on the states, yet it only took about thirty or so years after the USSR occupied half of Europe for everyone to just quietly accept that this is how things were. 70 years is more than double of that, so I don't see the issue with the game's society simply accepting being stomped by the corporate boot as an essential part of life.

    • @Engel_Regime
      @Engel_Regime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right. I look back on the video and regret saying the 70 years line because it simply isn't true. I still think my overall point still stands, though. I don't have an issue with the population becoming slaves of the board. The problem is the game has no world-building that describes how this came to be. Phineas' entire plan relies on people not being brainwashed by the board initially. There isn't anything in the game that showcases how this was achieved. There's very little history about the colony in general, which creates a world that lacks depth. Open world games rely heavily on their worlds lore to create a place that feels natural and real. With this solid foundation, a narrative for what the player will be facing can be created along with side quests, factions, and various other narrative tools. Outer Worlds does this somewhat, but it never dives deep enough. Leading to a shallow, and in my opinion, mediocre game.

    Agreed with you on this critique. Criminally overrated game with poor overall gameplay - repetitive enemies, mediocre combat, not enough diversity in the maps, ridiculously easy even on the hard difficulty (not the 'Supernova' which looked like a damn chore) and the absolute garbage loot.
    Feels like it got the praise it did because it was designed/scripted by females for female gamers and has LGBTQ+ narratives. Damn near all the protagonist/good characters you interact with are female too. I've nothing against this but if it was designed as a niche game it should've been called out as such and not made to come across as a solid 9/10 or 10/10 experience as the journalists (hacks) made it to be. Look past all this and it's a mediocre, 5/10 or 6/10 game (if you're generous).
    Just glad I didn't pay full price for this crap game. I played it on the PS4 and after the first story driven trophy it looked like players just lost interest in the game as it went from 74% to 15% for the second trophy. So interest was lost pretty quickly too. I kept at it and finished the game but it kept getting even more lacklustre towards the end. Because my character was a 'jack of all trades' as you pointed out, I ended up with high dialogue and ended up bypassing the 'boss fight' at the end too. Grrrr. No intention to go back as the game has ZERO replay-ability in my honest opinion.

    Wonderful video. It's gratifying to see that there are people still willing to criticize Obsidian, especially with all the butt-kissing they get from Bethesda haters. Bethesda deserves some good criticism in the wake of Fallout 76, but Outer Worlds isn't even up to the quality of Fallout 3, let alone New Vegas, the game it's supposed to be a spiritual successor to. Chris Avellone leaving Obsidian really did screw them hard. New Vegas was mature enough that they would show you both a corporate state and a dictatorship as viable alternatives to a western-style democracy. The Outer Worlds seems to just peddle the narrative of "corporations bad!" without actually portraying corporations as clever enough to be bad guys.
    I mean, if we look at Mass Effect 1 and 2, two games that were made in the past generation, they portrayed corporate dystopia a lot better. Yes, corporations can be bad, but these games let you navigate the corporate world and work within it to achieve your goals on different planets.
    On the world of Feros, for instance, you encounter a colony set up by a corporation named ExoGeni, they're under attack by a bunch of space robots known as the Geth. But you find out later on that the company willingly allowed a 50,000-year-old parasitic life form to control the colonists so they can study it, and once the colony re-establishes contact with the corporation, ExoGeni wants to purge the place to remove all witnesses. You can gun down the local corporate representative to show that such behavior won't be tolerated, or you can talk them down and say that sparing and curing the colonists would be better since it would let them pose as saviors; they survived a Geth attack on a frontier world, and the corporate rep realizes that no one has ever gone broke playing the "champion of humanity" card, and they work with you to help the colonists in return for using them as propaganda.
    On the ice world of Noveria, you have corporations setting up private labs so they can do icky experiments without governments noticing, and the local corporate administrator of Port Hanshan is using his position to control corporate security and ransack his corporate rival's office. The administrator is keeping you from going to the labs and confronting one of the prime suspects you're going after in your investigation as a government agent. But, you can work around that; you can rat out a local smuggler to the administrator, and he lets you go to the labs and even pays you. Or, you can obtain evidence of his wrongdoing and give it to either his rival or to a corporate policewoman, both of whom will give you a pass to go to the labs. The administrator's rival uses the evidence to blackmail him, and the policewoman will use it to arrest him. You can then go to the labs, and you discover that your rival is using one of his front corporations to revive a dead race of space bugs so they can use them as shock troopers. You put a stop to that and deal with the suspect you've been going after. When the media later questions you on why you shut down those labs, you can explain that you did it to save yourself, your crew, and the good people of Noveria, which nets you some positive points and makes you look good to the press.
    In Mass Effect 2, you get to the world of Illium, a world of fancy cities and a legal structure where everything from dangerous drugs and slavery are legal. You run into a gang of thugs who made deals with shifty merchants to sell dangerous drugs, and you work with the local police to run them both in. You do run into a paranoid corporate nut whose reaction to an assassin sneaking into her building amongst the workers is to have her mercenaries gun down the workers, and you have to kill her. You run into an old friend who's now working as a shady information broker, you run across people betting stocks and making money out of other people failing, you see cases of corporate sabotage, you see bands of corporate mercenaries who kill so long as they're paid. Illium is so filled with corporate hijinks that the greeter who meets you when you land advises you to not sign anything without reading the fine print.
    You even run across a slave broker and her slave; your first instinct is to threaten the slave broker to free her slave, but you then find out that the slave sold herself into slavery because she tried to play the stocks and it blew up on her face. The slave broker is trying to find a job for her slave so she can work off her debt and buy back her freedom, and they're eyeing a local AI corporation for work. The corporate rep doesn't want to hire a slave because it makes her company look bad, but you can convince her or threaten her to get her to hire the slave, so the slave can work off her debt and be free. Then there's a racist corpo rep who uses her contracts to run experiments on the people of Feros, but you can find out that the reason why she does this and why she hates other races is because her spouse and her daughters were killed by alien robots; you can get her to stand down by reminding her that her loved ones loved working with aliens, and that they wouldn't want to see her acting like this.
    In the Outer Worlds, they beat you to death with the message of corporations being bad, but the corporations aren't the smart kind of evil, they're the stupid kind of evil. The kind of evil where they can't even figure out proper farming methods or that eating nothing but Saltuna is bad for your health. Meanwhile, the corporations in Mass Effect carry out icky experiments that can revive a dead race, they study life forms that are thousands of years old, and they carry out purges and re-introduced slavery into the galactic market. But they aren't just brainlessly evil; their form of corporate slavery has people selling themselves into slavery to get rid of their debts, and you can deal with the corporate structure in ways that don't just involve bludgeoning through with a shotgun.
    Not to mention the fact that the corporations in Mass Effect actually tidy up their place of work; aside from Feros, which was a warzone, both Noveria and Illium look tidy. Port Hanshan in Noveria is as pristine and clean as places can go, and Illium is like Coruscant, but prettier, down to the point where even the back-alleys look clean. Byzantium in the Outer Worlds, by contrast, is only nice on the outside, but filthy inside, and you begin to wonder how these idiots can even run a city, let alone a star system.
    Basically, the corporations in Mass Effect are a more realistic picture of corporate dystopia; they're corrupt, but they're clever, and they tidy themselves up so that they look presentable to the public. The corporations in the Outer Worlds are filthy, incompetent, and it doesn't make sense that they're in charge considering that not only do they abuse their workers, but they sell cheap weapons to the public. How they can oppress the working public despite having cheap guns readily available to them is beyond me; the last thing you want to do to a populace that you exploit for corporate slave labor is give them lots of guns. Your corporate empire would get overthrown in an afternoon.
    Looking over all this, it's hard for me to take Obsidian's Outer Worlds seriously. It's a corporate dystopia written by edgy teenagers, not someone who's actually been through a corporate hell where they were trapped by rules and regulations. The fact that people think this game is a Fallout-killer is beyond me; people's standards must've gone down significantly over the last decade.

    One perfect example for my problem with the game (it's writing!) is in the NoClip documentary about writing the characters - th-cam.com/video/n31HEWJIzRQ/w-d-xo.html (at 11:11) where the author talks about changing a character because the initial version was too creepy for the metoo era. I almost screamed at my screen at that point, "NO! I want you to give me something to ponder, something to think about, tell me something about the metoo era pleeeeease!!", but instead they chose to make a game that falls totally flat because nobody gets hurt, nobody has any edges, evil is comically evil and so on. What a missed opportunity, and what a waste from a studio that, in the past, knew writing difficult stories so well and could've done so much more with difficult topics. This is in no way meant to be "SJWs ruined my game!", quite the opposite because I'd have no problem with the game being much more political. But apparently they did the opposite and chose self-censorship because difficult topics shouldn't be talked about at all, someone could get upset. :(

    Any game with sneaking and attacking that doesn't have dedicated sneak kills is garbage. A child could kill mike tyson if they get stabbed by surprise in the neck but you just do a normal swing?

    Obsidian: capitalism sucks; now pay full "triple a" price for our half baked game.

    Very interesting video.
    I was really excited about the game prior to release and it probably ended to be my biggest video-game disappointment ever.
    I lost interest so quickly I never finished the game. I liked edgewater but past that part of the game I was just bored. The combat doesn't work and the story isn't particularly interesting.
    The universe and some characters are great and I hope they reuse the setting but it looks like a typical case of a game being ruined by changing over and over what the game should be and releasing the game in the end because they ran out of money.
    The fact that the very first companion and the very first are of the game are the most fleshed out things of the game is not random.

    Man I hate the look of this game. I think I’ve realized that’s what keeps me from trying to play this.

    You don't believe that corpos took over everything without resistance? Who is your Senator or Congressman? Did you have to look up either? You also asked how rights were taken without issue. Patriot Act. Answers that. This game maybe lacking, though it is pretty realistic to me...

      Yeah... Maybe? But we actually SEE this deterioration taking place over the course of our lives; as where the Outer Worlds universe has about 20 hours of gameplay to make us believe that a farcicle, incompetent corporation pulled this over on the population. Understanding how something happens and it being believably pulled off in a narrative are completely different.

      @@brett66 Two month late response. The patriot act was 2 months before vote. It isn't "lives," It was discussed for 30 days before it happened, publicity. 20 hours of gameplay? We don't get 2 hours before this game breaks itself. Also just look at Wal-Mart. Also I wouldn't reply to such late post.
