I’m having this exact problem on a 2001 Indian Scout. Will try fiddling with the accelerator pump screw. Thank you!

Did all the carburetor tuning and adjusting while the engine was running and these were my best results after trying different combinations!........ Final adjustments: 2-3/4 turns works great on my S&S super E carb for my Accelerator Pump, gives it a crisp response on the throttle, with 1-7/8 turn on my Air/Fuel mixture (you might want to go richer depending on the altitude), and 2 turns on my idle screw (I personally like my bike to idle at about 750-800 RPM for good oil pressure I don't dare lower my idle very low! the engine might sound Cool (lopy cam) but not good for Oil pressure on the engine). So all three screws were turned upward from the close position. (close position: Counterclockwise) Happy Trails 👍........PS As far as your butterfly not closing all the way you have to much Carbon build up on the back side of the butterfly and Venturi area of the carburetor. It could also be your accelerator rod that has to be cleaned up as well. Like the text below stated 1000 grit sand paper should clean it up fairly well. S&S best Carburetors ever bar none!! BTW I run a Shovelhead

I just rebuilt mine this weekend, check the rubber diaphram in the pump itself, the spring could also be lazy. Don't drop the ball bearing of the little spring inside!

Words of WISDOM! LOL "Oooops, looks like I'm hits the parts store for a rebuild kit (you will never find the ball bearing or spring once it launches)!"

I had a problem like this. my throttle cables were too tight and misadjusted. after I "fixed" it my bike ran smoother at low rpms. idk why but I love it. lol

Yes the pump is connected to the butterfly and yes you are adjusting the acc pump with that screw which in turn adjusts the butterfly. The throttle plate must be open slightly for it to idle properly. The butterfly has to let some air in for it to idle proper. IF you manually close it with your finger it will not Idle and die. Why are you making adjustments on an engine that is not runnin and properly warmed up?You need to first adj the idle speed then the main jet mixture then the accelerator pump all this is to be done in sequence and when it is running.

This is the answer right here. I just rebuilt a super g which the only difference is throat size, and during the process of getting settings to stock they explain why it's like this.

Though I'm sure the issue is long resolved, when you have problems make a telephone call to S&S. (Their email contact person was useless when I tried recently.) They are very helpful.

The only part you need is a can of carb/brake clean and a scotch pad and cpl 10mm wrenches and a flat head and red lock tight for the 2 butterfly screws. Wrk on these weekly. Nvr thought this would be a miss from ppl as all the mechanics of operation are right there in your face.

How was it running before U started to adjust the accelerator pump ? Put it back to the way it was , make adjustments while running . The plate shouldn't close all the way . Did U adjust the throttle cable to ?

Kind of black in the venturi looking yet . Some cleaner might let the butterfly close better . You probably rubbed the carbon off the walls pushing the valve in . S&S videos say to go 2 turns out from bottom on the pump setting as a starting point . Have the same issue .

Rebuild kit for your carb is less than $80 from S&S. Disassemble, soak in Berryman's, clean all components and reassemble carb. Takes about an hour and you are good to go.

I did this soaked everything for 3 days except gaskets and O ringside. Got the $100 rebuild kit and I can't get the accelerator pump to squit.

Nearly 15,000 views and no answers.
    I'm bummed too.
Working on my 73 Ironhead with Shorty Super E now. Bogs and seems to starve for fuel when hitting higher revs/speed.
Gonna try a high flow petcock.
btw II... My squirts of gas looked kind of lame. Small stream but aiming hard right. Not down straight towards intake. My first HD btw3.

The butterfly could and may not be centered in the Bore of the carburetor loosen those two screws on the butterfly let it center and the boar then re-tighten them they’re very very tight but you have to do that to center it in the bore

did you ever find out what was causing the issue? mine is doing the same thing.

  • @dannytheplumber7394
    @dannytheplumber7394 7 ปีที่แล้ว

something to do with the assembly of the return spring and washer and outer lock nut all together there on the shaft that holds the throttle plate. if you had it apart, perhaps you didn't put it together again properly

Interesting. mine was puddling fuel at idle in the throttle hole. I'll have to try this.

The accelerator pump screw has nothing to do with that butterfly your idle screw does

Hello are you serious guy. Your carb is disgusting dirty. Tear the butterfly and shaft out and clean them. Duh. Your throttle return spring can’t handle the return because it’s filthy. When the accelerator screw is all the way in you now have two return springs closing the butterfly not just one. Tear carb apart and clean it. Will be good as good. Maybe above your ability tho as them spring are kindda tough to get back in place. So atleast take close up vid an pics before you take it apart.
