I forget how smart MatPat truly is. And he's so engaging with all the information he shares too. I would love to attend a class he teachers. I think it would sound so fun haha
Some of the biggest TH-camrs are also the smartest. Markiplier was going into bioengineering, Mark Roberg worked for NASA, Mattpatt studied neuroscience, etc. There's genetesists, marketing geniuses, doctors, lawyers. It's endless, and awesome.
I absolutely love that Anthony set aside a whole section for Mat to talk about his wife, Steph deserves all the love. Us classic GTLive watchers been knew, but the WORLD needs to know!
Yes!!! Steph getting long overdue recognition. She is a role model for me. Please please please please interview her. She has so much knowledge and creativity.
wow. wtf. I had no idea how much respect was to be had for Matthew. I had thought a lot of his success was due to luck, whether with finding the right things to analyse, or people stumbling across him online- now, I realise that with a personality, dedication and intellect like his, it almost doesn't matter how much lady luck favoured him. He feels like such an impressive force of nature here, that his success seems almost inevitable.
It's funny you say that because all that theory stuff actually runs in his family where I think he said his father was also a theorists this was mentioned in a podcast between Markiplier and matpat where a lot more info is showed
Well said! That's part of why I think his wife Steph is so important to work out. They're like a consultant team who've helped out plenty of TH-camrs directly. In a lot of ways I think this move to sell will help free some time for them to continue learning and exploring ways to help TH-cam as a platform grow and be a great space for all creators
I feel with platforms like TH-cam, luck will always have to be in the equation to a degree. That being said, I'm confident there aren't many people that could accomplish what Matt has with any amount of luck. Even though I've fallen off his content the last few years, I always have massive respect for his work.
MatPat is such a good partner to Steph. You can tell he genuinely loves and cares about her. I could tell he was getting emotional when discussing the hurt he feels when Steph doesn't get the attention she deserves
I love the attention for Steph, I remember when GTLive first started and Steph got to be so front and center and I fell in love with her personality, she’s so great thoughtful and caring, with out taking into account all of her incredible skill set.
Same! Even though she isn’t on GTLive anymore, it’s nice seeing her appear in some food theory episodes every now and then!(I honestly didn’t expect me to enjoy food theory so much haha)
I miss her during gtlive. Matt and Steph just work so well together in terms of humor and how they play games. But I understand that she has other things taking up her time.
You can tell how much MatPat loves and cares for Stephanie by the way he talks about her, he truly has so much respect and admiration for her and everything she has done, and you can tell he has always supported her and wanted her to be successful. Makes me respect him even more
@@DeathIsDestinyAh Austin. His videos were really fun but unfortunately or fortunately for you is that he’s no longer there due to personal life problems
i seriously love hearing matpat talk analytics, he’s so knowledgeable and i’ve always thought it was amazing that he acted as a consultant for so many other creators while creating for his own channels.
That part about no one caring about the presentations and then disregarding the main points he got across, that was painful. Every organization ever...
Having two of the biggest goats bond and get along was so incredibly wholesome to watch. So many super helpful insight and tips were also brought up in this video! Thank you Anthony!! 🙏
I think Matthew and Stephanie might be the only creators that could announce selling the company without me immediately thinking "Oh, this will ruin the channel and its just a matter of time until its all gone.". I know they have more knowledge about the business part of youtube than anyone else and I actually trust their decisions. It was just "OK. Im ready for this to be the example of how it can be done successfully.". Still a tiny flutter in my stomach, but I choose to go with my instinct and knowledge. Its gonna be fine.
For real, I’m depending on them so much. If anyone on TH-cam was qualified enough to make this decision well it’s gonna be game theorists. Makes everyone a bit nervous but this I’m really trying to trust some of the smartest people on the internet
This is nostalgic as hell. Anthony's days in Smosh was an era of TH-cam that will forever be ingrained in my memory. Even though I miss the "good ol days" I'm happy to see how well he is doing right now.
The amount of times as a woman becoming a physician I have been in a group of men and that same situation happened to me where a man says my ideas louder and they are acutally heard has been too many to count. I continuously have to prove myself by being asertive and repeating myself before my ideas are considered as equal to my male colleagues. I feel for Steph so much I am so glad she is getting more credit.
I am the only female in my job, so I completely understand. The people I've worked with for years listen to me, but every time we get a new guy, I have to work harder than everyone else to prove that I deserve the job and know what I'm doing, where everyone else, even the other new guys, are assumed to know more than me. I am so tired.
Exactly. People always discount the wage gap by saying ‘women choose to work lower-paying jobs’ but so often that’s because the more specialized fields are extremely sexist.
@@aarishowton8037 Lol yep. I actually would love to go into programming if I could do college over but nah, would rather not subject myself to that. I also highly question why some of the most emotionally-taxing jobs are super low paid.
It’s amazing to see MatPat be so loose and free without a script. And his body language shows how relaxed and comfortable he is, not just when it comes to talking about being a youtuber but also just in general. He sold his channel and he’s set. He doesn’t have to deal with the struggles of poverty anymore. Good for you, MatPat. ❤
It’s kind of hard to believe how far matpat has come. I was seven when I started watching him and now I’m an adult moving into an apartment next month. It’s just crazy to think about.
@A B LOL sorry if my comment seemed dumb, I just see alot of comments 😅 of people saying they watched the channel X amount of years but the math don't add up. Just appreciating the math works.
I feel like the Theorists channels are some of the only channels that you'll never really age out of. You can be just as interested in them when you're eighteen as you were when you were eight
@@drewpeacock9087 I mean they’re made with a younger audience in mind but it isn’t like dumbed down or anything. It’s like movies or shows that can be enjoyed by both kids an adults.
It’s really crazy how someone like MatPat; excellent grades, intelligence, valedictorian would be treated like that when he was looking for a job. Really knows that everyone regardless of their talent is treated like garbage. It also makes sense why he felt he had to put on a persona because none of what he had done before had been good enough for anyone, when it was them not being good enough for him.
Let's all take time to appreciate Matpat still wearing bracelet his son made for him. It just so sweet. I think is same one Olly came in mid video (GT LIVE) and brought him lil gift.

[belly laughing] and [guffaw] when they could've just said laughing but they specified. idk man I just think that the people doing the captions don't get enough recognition and as someone who almost always uses subtitles i really appreciate it
Yesss!!!! People who do captions fully help me so so so much. I’m hard of hearing in one ear and also have ADHD to point I need captions to focus. People who do their captions seriously or who have fun with their captions make my days. Same with people who do trigger or content warnings. It’s the small things in life
@@sugarkats21 Which are Sadly Too Rare on Not just TH-cam, but most Platforms Nowadays. It’s Come to the Point where Accessible, Actually Comprehensible Captions like these are Less the Standard and More the Outlier for Content in General. Anthony has come a long way building his new brand and channel outside of Smosh, so watching him talk about the company so candidly feels really nostalgic. It would be cool one day to see Anthony spend the day with Ian, and they can reflect on how much they’ve both grown since early smosh days.
This was one of the best episodes. It was all so natural and nice. And man, he's so smart. And hearing him talk about how he had to literally force people to pay attention to someone else other than himself just warms my heart. And saddens me in equal measure. Thank you, both, for existing. It's been a horrible day, but this video made it 100 times better.
Everything Matt said about Stephanie not being taken seriously makes me so sad. She's one of the best parts of the channels, in all the ways we've seen her and I'm sure countless ways we haven't. I've watched much less GTLive since Steph "left" the channel, and I secretly keep hoping there will be more Kindergarten sequels just so they have an excuse to bring her back on camera. Steph deserves all the love, respect, and support in the world ❤
I’m calling it now. Matpat is going to pull the rug on everyone and make the next channel Stat Theory: An education channel that goes in depth on the lore of all the academics. From the hidden meaning behind the digits of Pi, to the history of the square Edit: Well looks like it was Style Theory, was fun guessing with you guys
Sports theory, maybe? He even mentioned sports guys being geeks too in this interview. I think science theory and stat theory would be higher on the list of possibilities. Having watched him over a huge portion of his career, knowing what he went to school for and his interests shown through his current channels. Then again sports fans are a possibly untapped audience. While I'm not saying sports fans don't have any overlap with his game, film, and food channel I think it'll just sweep those folks to add to the pile.
I think they've already hinted that it'll be Fitness Theory, or something of the sort. I remember him and Stephanie talking about this around when Food Theory started. They said they had considered Music Theory but there were too many copyright concerns with TH-cam.
It honestly broke my heart to hear that Steph was so overlooked at that party. It’s the reality for women but I’m so glad that Mat recognizes that and is disgusted at it. It’s so wonderful that he is so supportive and loving to his wife.
@gamingpotato I do understand what you mean but it’s also a thing that general women have to live with; their husbands getting the attention/respect whilst they don’t. You do have a point but there is a gender thing also there.
@gamingpotato ofc a guy is gonna say this….I don’t usually comment but let me just share. I’m a woman and this is the reality for us. You will never understand because you are a man. So please don’t invalidate what we women have to go through. Popularity is another thing and does exists as u said, but why feel the need to bring up your “credible observations” as a man???? You aren’t living as a women in this society. So be kind to those near you and be understanding. Especially if you are looking for a future mate. Put yourself in our shoes for a second. And second imagine not listening to someone because of their gender… it’s bold of you to assume they know less really. This just makes you more close minded. These are bad stereotypes :/
it's crazy how you can just tell Matpat is so fluent and aware of all the ins and outs of how youtube as a platform works, it really shows his proficency and skill in understanding it all
matt is so wholesome, he truly has so much care and passion for an industry that doesn't share even a %1 of that passion. hearing him break down the eras, talk about stephanie, talk about his past history (with acting and analytics), along with his struggle to get a job aside from his intelligence. he's a treasure and i'm glad he's survived in this space
Love how Anthony doesn’t just interview, it’s not just one sided, he actually has a conversation with the people he interviews and it’s so fun to watch!!!!
The more I watch MatPat, the more I see that he's amazing in interviews and streams. He can perfectly flow from topic to topic while still making complete sense lol.
MatPat is absolutely adorable, he's so nerdy and cool and knowledgeable. Both Steph and Mat work so well together I'm so happy for them! Wishing to see what's in the store for the Theory channels
I agree entirely! They're so cute and I love seeing them both in videos together! It's wholesome and refreshing in this chaotic world that feels full of meanness so often. I'm so excited for the new channel! Also: Memento Mori!! 🖤🤍
Okay but that 30+ minutes was way too short! I wanted it to last at least another 30mins! It was so interesting, we can always count on Mat for great interesting insight in the TH-cam world! What a great conversation we were lucky to have access to!
It's interesting how many of the original top youtube creators felt like they had to maintain a persona. It's really great to see them be themselves and grow into the confidence that they are enough without a persona.
Definitely. I think it was definitely exemplified by the Vine boom where, like them or not, you had a bunch of creators who came in because they had token personalities. I'm not saying their fans loved them for those archetypal or 'token' personalities, but they were able to capture an increasing audience because their 'thing' could be summed up in a few words, or in a 6-second video every week. The original TH-camrs didn't think they could compete because Viners had to inherently play around a much lower attention-span (and therefore quicker but more 'juicy' content) and a much more mobile-oriented environment, where one's 'relevance' and ability to stay on the platform with a consistent amount of clicks would've had a much shorter lifespan than a typical TH-camr. I'm not saying that's bad, what I'm saying is that - there would've been an advantage to doing that - that the original TH-camrs wouldn't have had from the get go. So, one of the things they could do to inhibit a quick shift into this totally different paradigm just to compete with the Viners was to use a single persona that they could bend and shape at will just to succeed. They could no longer just make a video they wanted to make on a saturday evening, telling their viewers about how their day went - they had to be a personality because a bunch of these creators from other platforms were coming in, already born with archetypal and bombastic personalities. A lot of these Viners had already streamlined what would come to be a much more clickable format, and the only way for the original TH-camrs to compete was to ditch the flexibility of old laid-back TH-cam, and to adopt the streamlining and content optimization that would have already been subconsciously well understood by the Viners - with the biggest part being that you now also had to completely optimize your persona as well just to stay relevant. But now that a lot of these people are well established and have gone years making a relatively stable living: they're no longer worried about making too many compromises just to stay 'relevant'. Sure, you still have to do a load of work to 'stay', but you no longer need to do much to keep up. There is no longer enough change happening on YT that warrants the entire present creatorbase to suddenly do an annual shift in what they want to do just to continue getting views, and thus easing your viewerbase to a much more genuine 'persona' is finally completely doable.
Hearing about people ignoring steph’s ideas just to compliment matt for the exact same thing is heartbreaking. Steph is amazing and I always think of her when I think of the channel. She deserves so much love and appreciation and whoever pulled that sh*t needs to get their head outta their a** because she deserves all the credit for that idea.
I do think that Ian needs to be brought on here at some point. For the nostalgia, but also to hear more of the bts Smosh stuff and terrible experiences.
She really made GT Live. The Emily is Away series was one of the greatest things on the channel because of her. She also made the GT Live RPG streams, the Stanley Parable stuff, her Nugget voice was obviously iconic, she's the centre of the whole Theorist network
Honestly everytime I hear Matpat say "in hopes to find another job" just melts my heart because that's what i heard my dad say when i was growing up. So much respect 🙏
I interned for Mat and theorist, and I can’t say enough wonderful things about him and the team. What an amazing person, boss, and collaborator that really allowed for creating such a memorable and formative environment. All the love theorist, I miss you guys and truly can’t say enough great things. ❤❤❤
This guy is one of my favourite TH-camrs cause he fundamentally understands what he's doing and believes in what he's doing. Also works damn hard to do what he does! Great work MatPat!
he said in one of his film theories that it's poor people fault for being poor, and they are the cause for the tirane of the world. Tbh he is a Hardcore Republican, also he doesn't like trans people
MattPat and Steph are just so intelligent. It's clear in more than just their videos but hearing the behind the scenes, makes complete sense how they've had so much longevity.
Been watching MatPat since sometime in 2014-2015, and it's been amazing to see how much he's grown and improved as a creator and how much he's been able to expand Team Theorists - truly a huge inspiration to millions of people, and the face of some of the best channels on TH-cam for years passed and years to come! :D
I’m glad you two has this conversation I feel people often forget how genuinely insightful Matthew is, choosing to focus on the cringe or quality of his theories. Theories are for fun and to get people thinking about topics and unique and different ways. And I’m glad we were able to hear about Stephanie, as a long time theorist since the early GTLive especially and before, Stephanie was and still is a massive inspiration for me as a woman earning a post graduate degree in STEM and knowing that through all these changes and eras of TH-cam that Matthew and Stephanie have remained a team it really means a lot.

Some of the biggest TH-camrs are also the smartest. Markiplier was going into bioengineering, Mark Roberg worked for NASA, Mattpatt studied neuroscience, etc. There's genetesists, marketing geniuses, doctors, lawyers. It's endless, and awesome.

@@williamvanniekerk5608 Sure.
@@starshiny3399 Plot twist: that was the question
@@thebestpilot7 What a twist, it's been 7 days, that must've been it.
wow.
In a lot of ways I think this move to sell will help free some time for them to continue learning and exploring ways to help TH-cam as a platform grow and be a great space for all creators
this is why I love Anthony's interviews, it allows me to enjoy a creator even more, or start to emphatize with them, like in the case of amouranth
I feel with platforms like TH-cam, luck will always have to be in the equation to a degree. That being said, I'm confident there aren't many people that could accomplish what Matt has with any amount of luck. Even though I've fallen off his content the last few years, I always have massive respect for his work.
Yeah a lot of his haters don't understand

And she also does the best nugget voice
I miss her during gtlive. Matt and Steph just work so well together in terms of humor and how they play games. But I understand that she has other things taking up her time.
You can tell how much MatPat loves and cares for Stephanie by the way he talks about her, he truly has so much respect and admiration for her and everything she has done, and you can tell he has always supported her and wanted her to be successful. Makes me respect him even more

MatPats face at 29:46 is one of confusion, shock, and happiness all in the span of a couple seconds
Underrated comment but no replies?
Lemme fix that!
It's my belief that matpat sits at home with 5 different youtube videos playing at any given moment at 2x speed just to constantly be in the know.
He does say he watches most videos at 2x speed now, especially after Ollie was born
this didn't feel like an interview anymore but more like two friends catching up which made this video feel much more organic
30:52 Matpat may have hinted he was thinking of Retirement a year before he annouced it right here
This is nostalgic as hell. Anthony's days in Smosh was an era of TH-cam that will forever be ingrained in my memory. Even though I miss the "good ol days" I'm happy to see how well he is doing right now.
I've ALWAYS appreciated how MatPat always treated his viewers like we were a part of the channel, and not an afterthought

I’m calling it now. Matpat is going to pull the rug on everyone and make the next channel Stat Theory: An education channel that goes in depth on the lore of all the academics. From the hidden meaning behind the digits of Pi, to the history of the square
Edit: Well looks like it was Style Theory, was fun guessing with you guys
I would honestly really love that. It would work well as kind of a casual crash course
I like Science Theory:) lots of stats in science, and a lottttt of science theory’s😂😅
Science Theory, Sports Theory, Sound Theory, Space Theory... Can't come up with anymore
@gamingpotato2480dude why are you going around writing essays on every comment about the very blatant misogyny they discussed?? it's just sad

Anthony being surprised Mat watches his channel is so wholesome to me 😂

I’m glad you two has this conversation I feel people often forget how genuinely insightful Matthew is, choosing to focus on the cringe or quality of his theories. Theories are for fun and to get people thinking about topics and unique and different ways. And I’m glad we were able to hear about Stephanie, as a long time theorist since the early GTLive especially and before, Stephanie was and still is a massive inspiration for me as a woman earning a post graduate degree in STEM and knowing that through all these changes and eras of TH-cam that Matthew and Stephanie have remained a team it really means a lot.
