Manila's MOST SURPRISING CITY? MALABON Food And Heritage, Best In The Philippines

  • IS THIS MANILA'S MOST SURPRISING CITY? I thought it was. I didn't expect that the City of Malabon, on the northern boundary of Metro Manila, would pack so much food, heritage and culture into less than 16 square kilometres!
We started by eating at Aristocrat Restaurant, actually in the City of Manila - because it exuded the same vibe, history up to the present. Then a quick trip to the Dolomite Beach and into Malabon.
The City of Malabon is very low-lying and suffers from flooding, but 380,000 people live here amongst heritage homes (it was an old Spanish settlement, formed in 1614!) and in the new housing, some of which is the result of infilling fishponds that used to dot the landscape.
The food culture here is one of the best - I spent some time with the heirs to Dolor's Original Kakanin, a symbol of Malabon. It was really a delicious dessert. Then I found a little bit of space in my stomach for some Malabon Pancit, bangus stuffed with bangus, and various other culinary delights!
Then I spilt tea on myself. Very Daot!
    ORIGINAL DOLOR'S KAKANIN: originaldolors...

This is the hometown of my wife. I got introduced TO Malabon back in 2001. It was a culture shock. You'd know you're in Malabon when you start smelling the stench in the air. Flooding occurs even when there's no rain and the streets packed with people....and, oh....small roads. One thing they're not lacking of is great food. The best Crispy Pata (Jamico's), best pancit Malabon (Nanay's), of course kakanins and rellenong bangus at Dolor's, best sisig and equally great pancit Malabon in Milflores, great burger joints, best Halo Halo at Taste of Heaven and best place to buy Tinapang bangus. Malabon has much improved now. The stench is gone and the floods are very much controlled now. It can be a heritage town only if the politicians there strive for it.

Hi KD you are a really good historical presenter. You could keep expanding on this and it becomes your USP as a Vlogger. A lot of Vloggers contents are travels, holidays, house buildings or how they met their husbands etc. It is good know the history of places that have never been featured by other Vloggers. The real Philippines so to speak. As a Filipina living abroad for more than 40 yrs, it is interesting to know more about my mother country. Your Vlogs just keep getting better. Thank you for visiting my dad's hometown. Malabon is really an old place with hundreds of years of history. Unfortunately, the Malabon today is no longer the Malabon of old. Because of the flooding that has occurred since the Dagat-dagatan area was reclaimed by Imelda Marcos which lead to the natural waterways being blocked, many of the original people of Malabon have left and relocated in other parts of Metro Manila. All my relatives have left the place many years ago, and almost all of the people we know have also left. Many of the people you met when you went to Malabon are not really from Malabon but are migrants from other places who came and settled in the city to work in the factories or the shipyard.
During my dad's youth, in the 1960s, they enjoyed a Malabon that was not congested, no flooding, lots of affluent families living in nice houses, lots of clean rivers where kids can swim, plentiful seafood and food was very cheap. It was a beautiful place.

The Aristcrat Restaurant brought back so many happy memories with my Philippine family. Philippines really is home for many churches and most of them are beautiful. “Are you vlogging?” and the typical answer - “Yeahhh!” with a big smile from local people. 😊

I miss Malabon and all the authentic food it offers...not to mention are the tapang kabayo(horse tapa), oysters, Pichi-pichi(cassava cake with cheese or grated coconut toppings) and a lot more..Back in its glorious days, the best ternos(native Filipino gowns and barong tagalogs are made there by famous tailors and couturiers. Malabon still has the best tailors and gown/ dressmakers/designers and they are considered the best. Try to get a gown designed by Agrin Mendoza and also a suit or barong done by the very famous husband of Agrin, Rudy Mendoza. They have made countless dresses for the rich and famous of Malabon politicians and even extending to the nearby cities and even ordered by people who have been living in other countries. I have great memories of this great town. You brought me back those memories Kumander Daot. Send my best regards to Kulas and the gang and to your lovely wife. See I watch your daotness as well as that of Kulas..oh and Mama Rose too. More power to you and your vlogs. Finally, I had the chance to comment because you featured Malabon and oh, Aristocrat too!! Malabon is known for its fishponds, since you have one, might be a good idea to consult with them how to run one.
As for the houses, there are some beautiful ones there. Unfortunately most of their first floors have been swallowed up by the elevation of the streets, saw an article once that showed these old houses and they were Grand!
