- This is spiral that places the front and back fold colors at 180-degrees to each other. I probably shouldn't have added the black liquid dye soak. I think there will be a "Round 2" for this design.

Soda ash you can buy in store I think it's by arm and hammer. It's also made is you bake baking soda in the oven never tried it. One is a bicarbonate and the other is a carbonate.

I think it looks cool man. Neat effect. That's one thing I have noticed in the few weeks I have been tie dying. I am really hard on myself when it comes to certain shirts. I fucked up the fold or the colors didn't come out how I like, whatever it is. No one else sees it though and end up really liking a piece I'm bummed on.
The pieces I consider to be "fails" sell faster than the designs I actually like...

yeah I wasn't expecting the dark green mucky color either. I think it's the dye powder. Stick with dharma. I've had issues with most other dye company's stuff. Dharma seems pretty good with being consistent.

I really like this shirt. The colors came out awesome. The opposing colors on each side created custom colors that are hard to duplicate. To me, this looks very earthy and great for the late summer and fall. I made one but it is sitting overnight with the rinse tomorrow. Hope it comes out like this!

For me, this is beautiful as it is. But you are right: results are sometimes unexpected (I like that about tie dye)
I love the colors as they are, but would like to see a shirt where the black turned out like you wanted.
It looks pretty awesome...maybe using the color dyes first and using just black on the flip side would of shown the black with the rainbow that " pops" out....i wonder if doing a reverse tie dye could get the same effect ?!
I was really surprised that you put the Blue on the opposite side of the Orange , that makes brown. And red and green make a gray. I would have chosen different colors for the other side. Colors that don't make brown. I believe THAT is where your brown came from. My favorite brown is made with purple and orange. Blue and orange make a brown also. Ya gotta know the color wheel. But I LOVE the shirt!!
Most gorgeous spiral and colors I ever seen, interested how the black bath didn't flood all colors. Did you ever repeat experiment without black bath?
so im wondering if the reason you got so much brown is because you had red on the back side of the green. it's probably the only thing i'd try differently, aside from also going with the better black dye. shirt turned out great and i like your dye to water to guar gum ratio. i never thought to use guar gum (still learning). i will be giving dharma reactive dye a try forrrr surrrrrre. very vibrant
If u were looking for black spirals what I do is usually put colors on one side and then apply black on the whole back of the shirt.

This was supposed to be a bit different. I had a series of (4) shirts that all had poor saturation with the black. that were all done within a few days of each other. They were all the silver tag G200 shirts; so, I don't know if it was the shirts, the dye, I mis-measured (multiple times) or what. But, it hasn't happened since that batch of shirts.
Clearly that’s what he was trying to do, it’s just that different black dye behaved weirdly.
So...some questions if you're willing.
- You said the shirt didn't come out as expected and that you usually use the Better Black. Do you have a video that shows this process using better black? Does that mute the colors too? Because I REALLY want to achieve this result! I love the muted tones of this shirt!
- Did you add guar gum thickener to the black as well?
I think it turned out great! It’s unique, like a snowflake, no two tie dyes are ever the same. I enjoy watching your experiments. Why thicken the dye this time? Is it because you did the 180 flip and did not want the colors to bleed too much?
Yes, I thicken the dye when I don't want the dye to bleed beyond where it's placed.
I know you seem disappointed but personally I really like it a lot the turquoise really pops great job!

Where do you get the rack that you set the shirt on?
I have a collection of old towels that I put my shirts on when I apply dye. a lot of moisture wicks out in the process. If the shirt is saturated it may limit the uptake of the black? I'd like to see the result you were aiming for. Thanks bro!
It hadn't occurred before and then this shirt and another I did the same weekend had the same issues with the black being very subdued.
I recorded this video back in May and I'm pretty sure it was due to the shirts since it hasn't occurred since and there and thousands of complaints on many groups about the silver tag Gildan's having odd issues - such as not taking dye evenly, being cut askew, poor stitching, etc.
I like how the muted tones make the bright ones pop. But I get what you’re saying.

@@CasualCollisions the gilden shirts we bought recent one or two, the colors were bright but then went dull fast and they are pilling so everything looks so muted . The shirts you made look great.

Hi beautiful shirt. What is the purpose of guarm gum? And do you have a video on it?
The guar gum is used to thicken the dye to prevent it from spreading beyond where it's placed.
I don't have a video on it since it's pretty simple. Add about 1/4 tsp of guar gum to 16oz of water. Mix very well and wait 10-15 minutes. Check the consistency and add guar gum or water to adjust to the consistency you need. After it's right, add the dye.
Even because of the black bonding.
I messed up not pre soaking my shirt and the dye doesn't cover the shirt
I've not seen anyone use Guar Gum for thickening dye before - how does it compare to using alginate? I may try it 🙂.

Mostly Gildan, with a few exceptions. I use JiffyShirts.com for almost all my blanks.

No, the black is not thickened.
can you please do a comparison of 100% cotton vs. polycotton shirts?
Possibly... From my experience, a 90% cotton shirt loses about half of the color saturation compared to a 100% cotton shirt. So, everything comes out with a pastel/faded look.

You flipped your colors, and put colors opposite on the color wheel, on top of each other. That makes brown because opposite colors cancel each other out.
How long does the dharma colors last once their mixed, without soda ash.
It would vary by the component dye colors and the temperature. Generally, you should use them within a week; but, if you keep them refrigerated, they're viable for over a month.
However, it shouldn't be an issue since you only need to mix what you plan to use.
The dye powder is viable much longer as long as it's kept dry. I still use powder that's over 5 years old without any issues.

Procion Fiber Reactive dyes don't fade. Well... they do; but, they fade due to the fibers of the fabric physically wearing not due to the dyes being removed during wash cycles. My son has several shirts that he's worn and washed weekly for at least 4 years that show only mild changes in color over that time due to the physical abrasion of the fabric of being washed hundreds of times.
After i dye my shirts, towels, rugs etc etc...i soak them in white distilled vinegar before final rinse...also when i wash my tie dyes, i use cold water, gentle cycle, i use woolite, and you can add vinegar and/ or salt to detergent or purchase soap that has vinegar / or color boosters already mixed in it...i dry them on a low tumble, i have tie dye shirts that are over 5 yrs old, and they look like i just dyed them ( little fading will happen tho)...also if u reverse tie dye ( bleach) make sure you soak it in water and PEROXIDE before you final rinse n wash....the peroxide balances out the PH from the bleach and it wont leave little holes or tears in your material from the bleach...good luck
