  • Building an outside pen for our meat rabbits continues. We are creating a colony style living space for our meat rabbits, so that they can live together and co-raise their kits. Rabbits are social animals and prefer to live together. We are encouraging their natural behaviors by building a pen that allows them the opportunity to act more inline with their instincts.

    For a number of years I had a friend 4 months older than I and, on the other side of New Years. 4 months out of the year he was an "old man" and the rest of the year he was "appropriately aged". - Happy Birthday.

      That's so funny. It sounds like something my sister would say. Technically we are born in the same year. I'm just at the beginning in January, but for a little bit of time we are the same age. When that happens, I'm no longer old. 😂

    That rabbit colony is looking good. I am over twice as old as you so your not to old. I enjoyed watching the video, thanks for sharing. by the way that is how I did my chicken tractor chicken wire inside and 2 by 4 welded wire on the outside. I also put 2 by 4 wire on bottom of chicken tractor so they could eat grass and bugs but keep racoons out.

      I'm so glad the rabbit colony is almost done!
      Next we have to build our chicken tractors because our chickens will be here in a few weeks!

    First of all… Let me say, happy birthday you dirty digging woman… Lol… And congratulations on your new nephew he’s beautiful! I’m also Happy to see you using both sides of your body while you’re shoveling most people don’t and that’s why they come up with back injuries way to go!💜🌻💜

      Thank you!
      Yeah I tried to remind myself that every time I needed a breather, I also needed to stretch and switch sides. It helped! My back wasn't sore at all.

    May your wire last a long, long, long time. In this area, 6 sided predator protection is needed depending upon which groups of predators take up residence or, are just passing through. So many prop up a couple of pallets against each other withiut securing them then wonder why thier chickens dissappear or just plain, get ravaged. - I commend you for all of the extra work yoire putting into your rabbit pen.

    Do you see the mattock your husband is using? My advice it to learn how to use it; the heavier the better. Yes, it is "suppose to be" used by swinging it from above one shoulder into the ground then lifting over the opposite shoulder for the next swing. But if you can get it waist high, cup the handle from underneath one hand over the other, spread your legs, and drop the pointed end of the mattock while keeping the handle cupped - you can loosen and break up the dirt before shoveling it. Also, use that point to hook under those roots then reef back on the handle (not too hard). You can use it this way to work around and pry rocks out of the dirt too.

      Thank you for explaining. I'm sure I will have many digging opportunities in my future. I will give your advice a try next time.

    I'm planning a rabbit colony. When it comes to deciding what to use for preventing digouts, how long do you think the buried chicken wire will last? And have you come across concerns since the build? It looks great! Thanks!

    • @LivingtheHightLife
      @LivingtheHightLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will take at least a few years for the chicken wire to break down, but by that point we are hoping to have rabbits thriving in the colony life and not attempting to dig out. We did go back and do a few more updates with adding in bucket burrows and a rain water catchment system. Other than that, I wish we had added more rafters for storing tree hay for winter use.

    Won't chicken wire rot fast in the ground? That is lots work to put such a cheap product in the ground isn't it? I would expect you want minium 16 gage.

      Absolutely! It's 2x3 welded wire on the outside and chicken wire on the inside. This is the welded wire we used.

    How much would 5 or ten acres be with 3 bedroom two bathroom house in south carolina sorry for bothering you

    • @LivingtheHightLife
      @LivingtheHightLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure. Housing in south Carolina is very location specific. Most of south Carolina is still undeveloped so the areas that are built on are more expensive. We chose raw land because it was a much cheaper option
