    I'm gardening, chickening, and rabbiting. More now than ever, I like knowing what is in my food.
    The same applies to the birds and mammals under my care.
    I found it interesting that you mentioned drying comfrey and borage for off-season feeding options. I have a garden patch of mineral mining plants for compost improvements ... Crazy how everything is tied together somewhere in nature's cycle.

    We don't particularly care about so-called "unhealthy" foods for The Growouts. They're only around 12-16 weeks and won't suffer life-long issues due to nutritional deficiences, and GI tract issues are waaaaay overstated in this community. Most won't suffer any issues at all. We freely feed roots that folks say are "bad". Sweet Potato, Sunchoke, and Mangel Beet make up about 1/2 of our last cycle of the year's daily food. They're all coming out of the Garden in Oct Harvest here and the last Growouts are weaned and grown Oct, Nov, Dec.
    Root Crops make fine Freezer Meat.

    • @LivingtheHightLife
      @LivingtheHightLife  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I somewhat disagree with that, but I'm glad your method has worked for you.
      The root of the root crop is what's bad for rabbits. I go into details on other videos and in my books on the subject, but it all has to do with their digestive system and how it functions.
      Sweet potato greens and sun choke greens are wonderful for rabbits. Beet greens are also great for them in a varied diet so that they don't don't develop oxalic toxicity.

    • @almostoily7541
      @almostoily7541 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, when I was on Facebook, I saw a comment where a guy did an experiment and his rabbits grew out on just sweet potato vines.
      I'd think the meat produced probably wasn't as nutrient dense as a varied diet but it's good to know in a survival situation that can be done.
      Look at what crap humans eat and survive with. Growouts are literally meant for the table, not to live.

  • @terryhenderson424

    About those tomatoes - They say you cannot companion plant onions, garlic, amd chives with tomatoes. It turns out that the reason is that the tomato may and can pick up an onion (garlic) flavor not that they inhibit each other's growth. Just like companion planting chives with roses, you can companion plant chives with tomatoes. The feeder roots of a chive in an established chive patch can go 6"-12" which is shorter than most of the rest of the onion family and are less likely to "flavor" your tomatoes. If left to flower, chives can bring in additional pollinators while acting a bit like a green mulch.

    • @LivingtheHightLife
      @LivingtheHightLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Yes, dehydrating would be a good way to dry them, but we can't run a dehydrator with our solar system. I usually put the item in my oven with the oven light on and run a fan pointed at it. The light and fan combine to act as a dehydrator. You could also have it up if you have a low humidity area with air movement.

    We have of lots of volunteer fennel and Swiss chard. Are there any negatives to feeding these? As far as borage goes, our rabbits don't like to eat it fresh because of the prickles--same with zucchini leaves. Am I correct in assuming the prickles aren't a problem when those leaves are dried? Is it a problem to feed leaves that have powdery mildew on them?
    Thanks for your video--it is extremely helpful as we move away from pelleted feed for our Californian meat rabbits. We're in Ventura CA.

    • @LivingtheHightLife
      @LivingtheHightLife  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fennel and Swiss Chard are safe.
      The prickles are rabbit safe. Ours even eat prickly BlackBerry bushes without issues.
      But if you feed them young the prickles are much less stiff.
      Powdery mildew is not an issue when feeding the plants

      Mint will dry up a rabbit's milk supply. It will in all mammals, including humans.
      It's great if you're weaning a litter of rabbits or if you have lost a litter and need to dry up the doe.
      But if you want her to continue lactating, don't feed it in the week of pregnancy or while nursing.

We are already getting it for our goats, rabbits don't eat that much more. The only things we really purchase are black oil sunflower seeds (because I can't grow enough for year round use), rolled oats, and Alfalfa (but alfalfa is only during the winter.)
