Maybe they could alternate Plus and Mini years. So the lineup stays compact each year, but consumers still have the choice of buying last years model if they value form factor more than 1 year of new features

I think the Mini form factor could be the iPhone SE of the future. That would also finally get them to move on from the iPhone 6-8 design language. Don't get me wrong, I love that design and the Home Button, but at one point, we should really move on from that screen and camera module.

taking nicer pictures was a huge deal for me and is the reason i went for my pro, I was dealing with lack of screen real estate, coming from my iPhone 6, so I went with the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
About a year into using this phone I find that I don't much care for the bigger screen anymore (I have purchased an iPad Air in the meantime, which solves my screen real estate issue).
I don't have trouble with using a bigger phone like this, because I've gotten used to and developed techniques for "stretching" to the top without actually stretching my hand, and still maintaining grip. However, I totally agree with it being cumbersome in pockets.
I don't regret going for a Pro model, because I do actually use the camera a ton, and I am very happy with the quality of the pictures I'm taking on my phone (it's much easier than carrying around my dslr everywhere).
Overall, I would consider going to an iPhone mini, as a smaller screen might keep me from spending entire days watching TH-cam videos on my phone, but I would definitely miss the cameras.

The best large phone I owned was the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra because although it was big, it was also narrow so quite easy to hold and use one handed and the software made it easy to use without having to reach. I thought I'd like the larger display on the XS Max - the largest phone Apple made up until that point. After years of using it, I found I, increasingly, hated its large form factor. But phones are expensive now so an upgrade wasn't really intriguing until this year, when I got a 14 Pro. I'd argue that, without a case, it's about the perfect size, but with one, it's ever-so-slightly too big. And I've got a kid, so it's gotta have a case. I'm happy with my purchase, even if the 13 was, arguably, pretty similar - I've got a year's worth of advances and newer components that will easily last me until the 17 or 18, instead of a battery that's been sitting on a shelf for a year.

So I completely 100% agree with the smaller screen. My 13 mini was my favorite phone. The size is perfect for my pocket and it did everything that I wanted it to do with the exception of one thing.
The phone company considered me a “power user“ and what they meant by that is I had to charge my mini twice a day because the battery was not large enough for me to do the every day tasks that I need to do. My phone has apps on it that I use for my job and those apps run GPS which drains the battery significantly. Due to the small form factor of the phone and the even smaller battery, I had to trade in my 13 mini to get a 14 and I went for the pro max phone. I'm with Jonathan on this one. I went from a 2020 SE (which was small and rounded and great) to a regular 13 (which is slightly too big and angular) and I definitely use my phone less just because it doesn't comfortably fit in as many convenient pockets (especially problematic in jackets), and it just feels like more of a hassle to get out for a minute or two to check social. I would love a phone in the SE's rounded chassis with no home button, less of a bezel and upgraded tech.

This is my favorite video I’ve come across!
I switched from an S20 to the 13 mini earlier this year.
The regular models are too wide and bulky for my liking, even though my Samsung phone was a 6.1
Cons- not too much variety in phone cases
Pros- small, easy to fit in pockets, not heavy
My mom switched to iPhone this year too- she prefers bigger phones so yes, she got the 14 plus.

I used the 12 mini the last two years but recently got a great deal for a normal 13 and switched. Im not a heavy phone user, so in that aspect, the mini was perfect. When I wanted to use it e.g. while traveling, it felt too small to enjoy using it. I really wished they had something between the mini and the normal sized ones. 5,7-8 inches would be the sweet spot for me.

Though the camera bump is getting out of hand, the slightly smaller form factor of the 14 Pro over the Max variant makes it so much easier to use one handed. 13 mini user as a temporary replacement for my damaged 13, which was my first iphone from being an android user since early 2010. My 13 has returned from repair and I'm now torn between sticking with the mini or going back to the 13.
I'd initially picked the 13 rather than a larger model as it was relatively compact. But, size, weight, grip and all that good stuff is so much better on the mini, especially pocketability. That capability is identical makes it even harder to choose the 13.
I had no interest in the 14 anyway, but was a little disappointed to see the smaller model go. I am surprised that the 14 max is less popular as I could see the size trend increasing, but thought the pricing structure weird as the pro seemed better value.
I do hope that the mini returns in future cycles and with the same aplomb the 13 mini had over the 12 mini (eg significant upgrades in all areas but particularly where it had been weaker eg battery life). I suspect that another small factor phone in a consistent line-up without being dropped after a single refinement cycle would hold more weight with consumers and gain greater traction over time.

Personally I always thought the 5S was the sweet spot screen vs phone size. I’ve stuck ruthlessly to the standard sizes and ‘pro’ models (I use the cameras a heap) throughout several upgrades until recently upgrading to a 14 Pro Max a few weeks ago, basically just to ‘try’. Took maybe 3 days to adjust, and doing fancy things like video and photo editing is much nicer with a slightly bigger screen. The only real bummer is that pockets on backpacks etc that fit standard sized phones comfortably are now uncomfortably tight with the Max.

Upgraded from the Xr to 13 mini
The Xr was annoyingly cumbersome to use, but I lived with it because it wasn’t unbearable. Switching to the mini, I’ve been overjoyed with how much easier it is to physically interact with, but I still have moments that I need to use my other hand to reach a back button. Throughout iOS, this is pretty much solved by swiping from the left side of the screen, but not all apps support that.
Personally, I find iPhone 5S to be the perfect size and design. The size is downright perfect, and the squared edges make the device very easy to grip.
I’d love to see an iPhone with the exact form factor of the 5, but with the edge-to-edge screen and all the other features of modern iPhones, barring the camera. I can easily live with a simple camera. The one thing making that impossible is MagSafe. Apple’s MagSafe accessories are sized to fit the mini models perfectly, and I don’t think that it would even fit in a smaller casing without needing to redesign MagSafe altogether. So no MagSafe for iPhone Nano.
As someone who loves MagSafe, this would be quite a big sacrifice to make. I would absolutely spring for a Nano model, but I fear that I’ll greatly regret losing MagSafe capabilities.
Long story short, I hope that Apple continues the Mini lineup in some form, whether that be replacing the Plus models, or taking the mantle of the SE.
The Mini is as close to perfect as it gets, with the only feature I want added being USB-C.
