- Ranking Every Pal in Palworld based on how much of A ripoff they are.
Palworld was released by pocket pair inc. to an overwhelmingly positive reception in January of 2024, however what is a supposed to be a simple open world survival game parody of Pokemon. However the Pal World quickly became involved in controversy as people began to accuse PocketPair of plagiarizing Pokemon. With some going to far as to even claim that they had stolen assets and models from Game freak and the pokemon company.
Today I will be looking at every individual Pal and Pal world, seeing how they compare to pokemon and seeing if there's any truth behind the accusations of model theft and plagiarism.

I think Fuack is a typo joke. Like how people type "fuck" but get "duck" its "Fuack" instead of "Quack"
It's based on the word thwack because it shoots off at high speeds and often hits things.
Exactly that!
Fuack is thwack with Th-fronting. It's a common manner of speech in certain dialects. It's why you hear Michael Caine say things like "Firty Fousand dollars"
And yes, there are Asian dialects with this quirk
it's like "duck you"
Honestly I was just thinking pkmn logic myself, since water type and a duck it’s name could be a mixture of the words foam and quack.

I mean, the only penguin pokemon i can think of are the Piplup line, Eiscue (much closer to the irl inspiration), and Delibird- Eiscue I could argue, but it's not close enough due to it's signature Ice-head gimmick.

Now that i think of it, Meowth and Mau are 2 distinct ideas. Meowth is based on japanese Maneki neko, while Mau is meant to be a sort of "Egyptian cat"

To me it just seems all these people are forcing comparisons between pokemon and pals, 99.9% of them look nothing alike, bro saw a tail that resembles evee and said "yeah its just eevee". Most of the "potential lawsuit" pals have almost nothing to do with the pokemon they're compared to. An example is at the timestamp 14:00 , I can see the fin, but how does that prove anything? the results are not even remotely close to the actual final product, so why bother?
I actually really like the design of Pyrin as, from what I can tell, is based on 2 things:
1. The mythological beast Kirin. Its commonly depicted in East Asian culture and has a resemblance towards deer/horses. I would assume this is the "-in" in Pyrin.
2. Lu Bu/Red Hare. Pyrin's two long strands on the head seem to be an homage to the Chinese warrior Lu Bu from the Warring Kingdoms era, as he is commonly depicted with those same feathers/hairs protruding from his helmet. His iconic mount was a horse named Red Hare. Even Pyrin's paldeck entry lists the reference.
Yeah none of them look anything like Pokemon and Nintendo and Co would lose any lawsuit here. Pokemon is dead and Scarlet and Violet is roasting its mutilated corpse. There is absolutely nothing in here that would make me think they were directly assets stolen from Pokemon all the people mad at palworld are probably jelly nostolgia blind people who won't grow up and mine in from Pokemon and are in there mid 30s or early 40s. Even my kids weren't really into Pokemon games as the toxic fanbase is.
Excuse me? Penking? King deedeedee? No one else sees the resemblance between him, and that Kirby villian?
What resemblance lol, both of them are kings and both are penguins? Other than that, they physically look different

The goodra you put in OC looks like it has bayleefs face
Can you do the same kind of video, but with Pokemon and Dragon Quest?
They don't really look similar to be completely honest. The design inspirations are clearly similar but the actual art style is way different. It's sort of opposite from Palworld, who uses different design inspirations for the most part (ignoring Anubis and a few others) but uses a very similar art style as Pokemon and straight up just copies little bits and bobs from different mons, like Azurrobe and Primarina.
That Celeray and Mantine comparison is not really fair. They're literally both just Manta's. Those are what manta rays look like. They aren't exactly ripping anything off.
yeah, Ive been saying, any pal that is just - an already existing animal, that just so happens to also have a Pokemon designed in similair way is not really a ripoff, albeit lazy from both pokemon and palworlds side
Also mau its not even based on same thing japanese lucky cat and egyptian cat arent same
also flying manta ray are a fairly common fantasy trope in general.
Agreed, the best way to look at it os how many ways there are to color and theme pals.
Making a sea dragon blue is an obvious choice.
Some of the electric ones are also too high. Showing electricity as a flash is obvious, a flash is yellow, and warning signs usually are black and yellow.
On the other hand i would have put way more from the original idea tier to the inspired by tier. Because many don't pass the above test.

Something to remember that pokemon only holds copyright on the exact designs of their pokemon
So they could just take a pokemon, put a single new spot on its body, and it would be legally okay?
@jonathangoodwin5609 no but they could say take a pikachu and idk stretch its neck out and mildly change its skin
@@jonathangoodwin5609 Copyright law or trademark, depending on which Pikachu for instance lies under, is all about specificity. Copyright isn't meant to protect just ideas or broad design ideas. No one can own a yellow cartoon mouse in anime style with lightening powers, but exactly how Pikachu looks and the name, that is protected.
If Pikachu is trademarked, then it needs to be distinct enough to not have someone assume that if it's on a product, that it's official merch. Much like how putting mouse ears to hint at being Disney official would be a big problem. Trademark is harder line than copyright and also doesn't expire and get turned over to the public overtime.
To put it another way, anyone can design and sell a cellphone. The exact way the phone is made however is unique to the company who sells it, such as design, name etc. All phones look pretty similar, because they are all smart phones. Making cartoon anime style monsters based off of animals or mixes of them can't be protected. It's too broad.
They definitively own their 3D meshes, buddy. Why are people trying to play it off as a design issue when it's obvious the problem here is they've ripped off the Pokémon 3D models to make their own ?
No one is saying Game Freak owns the idea of a leaf monkey, Pokémon has several aside from Pansage and the "monkey = jungle = leaf" is a common association. And considering there are 1000 Pokémon, any design inspired by a real world animal will look similar to a Pokémon at some point, just like the Simpsons has so many episodes it's literally impossible to find a concept that hasn't been already explored by them.
The problem is that you can literally point out which parts of Dinossum were taken from which Pokémon 3D model just by a glance. We're not into getting inspiration there, or common associations, we enter assets stealing territory.
And it's obvious they didn't make them from scratch when the 3D models quality in the game is so inconsistent. Sure weird how their 3D modelists can replicate the Pokémon style perfectly on their own, but their humans look straight out of Fortnite. Definitively doesn't scream shovelware.
@ellebora8536 I think the pokemon company and pocket pair ink know the copyright laws of Japan, the nation they are in far better than you. If there was a problem do you really think considering everything the pokemon company has made claims against, they would have done so the pocket pair?
Quivern defiently gave me reshiram influence. Frostallion and it's counter part has some glastrier and spectrier influenece. The silvally one also had arceus golden arch thing on its back just colored black, the cinnamon moth has some mothim influence, alpaca has pink virizon legs lol, green chipmunk has parichrisu vibes but wouldnt hold that against palword, gorirat gave me gorillaboom vibes, bushi has some mawile looks to it, cat witch has mismagius looks to it, paldadis and its counter part remind me of ceruledge and escavalier, surfent gave me quilava vibes, faleris has some corviknight influence to me. Reptyro has a terrakion look to it. Just some things things I thought I'd point out that this video missed to me. Forgive any errors on the palworld names I was just guessing how theyre spelled as I was going.
With the sheer amount of Pokémon that exist it would be interesting to see a challenge where artists try to design their own creatures and then see how many of them look like a ripoff of a Pokémon.
I think there are many "challenges" similar to that, where TH-camrs based around Pokémon invite other people (who don't know much about Pokémon) and show them either a real Pokémon or a Fan Made one and they have to guess if it's a real Pokémon or not.
Exactly what i was thinking. If you use a „similar“ artstyle for your creatures it will be inevitable to have some looking similar to the 1025 Pokémon there are. Though a few really looked TOO similar
i thought the same. Especially if you put on the elemental theme in addition. With over 1000 Pokémon and a similar art style its bound to have some overlaps. Some are really too similar, but I don‘t agree fully with the tier list in that regard. Some are imo just common associations. like the grinning cat face. the yellow eyes are also similar from the pokemon to the grinning cat in the disney alice in wonderland movie and using triangles for teeth… well that‘s not uncommon as well.
btw: i never played palworld only pokemon up until sword/shield. but lost interest in the games even before that generation.

I think the biggest issue is that there are so many pokemon that you can probably look at a lot of modern designs and go, "Yeah it looks like they took combined pokemons A and B and came up with this".
You would still usually end up with compartiments that have slight differences, tho. There are so many body parts on these pals which have the exact same form like these of pokémon called out that it seems very unlikely that this is just a coincidence.
The amount of pokémon connections that are glaringly obvious and completely missed is paining me 😭😭😭

Pokemon didn't plagiarize because it changed the design elements and style themselves, that is the way the pen meets the paper. The inspirations are practically the same, especially Dragon Quest, but there it literally falls right into "transformative" content. Palworld on the other hand used different inspirations, but the style is incredibly similar and individual elements like Azzurobe's hair just being Primarina's hair shows a different type of laziness that borders more on plagiarism. That being said, I don't think there's much ground for a lawsuit, as they still drew the things themselves, though it shows an insane lack of creativity, especially when paired with the lazy designs like Chikipi.
I will point out that most of the birds have a similar model and identical movement to either Corviknight or Yveltal

Cool video! I think Palworld will be legally safe and considered a parody. Just by giving it a different name and changing one single aspect about the design of a character makes it legally distinct OC based on a Pokemon. But it was cool seeing someone actually lay out the comparisons!

Honestly, a lot of pals even in the middle tiers just kinda look like.. Two pokemon blended together.
Even a fair amount in the original tiers are like that
They take the color palette from one pokemon and the body from two pokemon
A lot of this is more blatant than the AI ripoffs people are rightfully upset about but a lot of people seem to be ok with this one because it's people doing it and they enjoy the game. Looks like a bit of a double standard.
@Dragowolf_Rising I think its more of for people like me we are tired of game freak being lazy with pokemon. Like s and v were ok but so buggy and the remakes of gen 4 were awful. Galar was mid. Legends was fun tho but they didn't continue it. So if it takes palworld to kick game freak back into gear I'm all for it.
It doesn’t help that they tried hard to keep the Pokémon art style only for the creatures so even ones that would be perfectly fine otherwise, just look like fan Pokémon or Pokémon fusions.
a ton of Pokémon were based on Yōkai (Japanese demon folklore) and are thus free to copy in concept as long as their appearance is different enough.
OnADock: Plague doctor bird is unique.
Me, who's played doodle world past von sweetsville: Are you sure about that?
Honestly, I don't think Nintendo is gonna file a lawsuit. If they were, then they would've already done it by now.
Hm... I feel many of these choices were made on the fly and he stuck to them. A lot feel like they're not in the right tier to me.
Agreed, some of these were quite a reach to even compare. Like the 2 squids don't look alike. It's just two cute lil guys. Or even Grintale. It's GrinTALE. This was literally based off the the Cheshire Cat, with the color, the eyes, and the smile. To say they took that from pokemon is ridiculous, if anything pokemon took it from wonderland lol.
There's sooooo many pals that were taken from mythology too, the names and characteristics describe that. yet he's here still trying to compare it and put it into sus tiers.
I think there's a lot of confusion from people who don't really know the true origins of a lot of designs and ideas they're crying about and claim it's a pokemon ripoff, when pokemon themselves also ripped it off from something else half the time XD
Don't get me wrong, there ARE some very clear ones that looks super inspired and "copied" from pokemon, but really a lot of these on the list were a bit of a reach.
Absolutely. I felt like I was going insane watching this.
One minute he notices visual motifs and the next he passes them off as generic. Then at 14:00 odd he puts the purple lizard in the suspicious category because it reminds him of the 'inner city' vibes of two pokemon that aren't reptiles. Man's free associating.
The guy is forgetting that animal+element will make a similar design.
Like grass+ monkey= grass monkey.
Then make your own tier list. Problem solved.
@@princewhiff Dude I thought the exact same thing when he got to that purple lizard. You can't put it in the sus tier when they just share a "vibe". They look nothing alike, not the same species or anything. How do you plagiarize a vibe?
Don't get me wrong theres a lot of pals/pokemon that DO share a LOT of similarities. And I do agree with a fair amount of these. But lots of these are just reach, grasping at straws that aren't even there.
Like Pyrin is Rapidash? Why? Cause they're both fire horses?
Pyrin is literally a Kirin(qilin for chinese) from Japanese mythology which is known as a dragon/unicorn/deer hybrid thing that's covered in flames. Plus the name I mean c'mon, Pyr (fire), Pyrin, Kirin. Like you can't get much closer. And if you look up a Kirin it's almost exact. This is 1000% a copy of mythology, not a rapidash lol.
So unless pokemon owns rights to asian mythologies, they're also ripping it off with their rapidash.
Oh and that candy one too, like what? Wooliepop is a cotton candy dog. Alcreamie is not a dog... and it's whipped cream. You can't compare these two lol.
Also, if you're going to say that Ribunny is Sylveon because of the ribbons regardless of their species, then using this videos logic I would argue that Lifmunk is basically Leafeon regardless of species.
I agree that it's frustrating to see him notice certain similarities then like completely ignore others, or try to claim/create others that just aren't there.
Also I've learned that you apparently can't have any cute fox looking thing without claiming it to be eevee lol.
The super fluffy Eevee is basically what a Normal Type Eeveelusion should look like.

Dude, the tier list based off only on Pokémon and directly from their designs plagiarism just made me mad, when is more than obvious that they frankthefuckenstein monster ripped from a shit ton of things LOL
A lot of comments about the many ripoffs missed so I won't harp on it, but I want to clear up the AI claims. They're not saying that this company used chatgpt or any newfangled AI tech. Pal designs look like they may have used a 3d modelling tool with some kind of genetic algorithm to make many many combinations of shapes from existing pokemon models. The tool would take two pokemon models and return (one or more) hybrid(s), maybe with a random colour change, pattern, but mostly taking distinct sections from the two models. It would save that as a new pal and then combine it with another pokemon or pal recursively. They'd make thousands of these and then humans would parse those thousands down into usable pals (since most wouldn't look like cohesive plausible characters) and then probably make touch ups to the models while deciding on the new lore / dex info. The evidence for that wouldn't be in simple bleh designs like you mentioned, it would be in finding shapes that look very very unnecessarily similar to existing pokemon parts. Most of those shapes would be brushed up by humans if too similar but some would sneak through (not exactly the same because the algorithm combining the two pokemon would be slightly altering the polygons in order to fit different segments of different pokemon together). That may be why you caught things like Primarina hair and Giratina face. Many Pals also use Charizard's body, Zarude's body, Zoroark's body, head pieces from Zacian/Zamazenta and Absol. The two centaurs killed me because you mentioned the Giratina face but not the entire faces, heads and upper bodies from Ceruledge/Armarouge on the Pal centaurs.
"And if we're gonna start calling having a circle for a body plagiarism...I am in *trouble* " Oh my god I I laughed HARD.

The cow is not lawsuit tier
Truthfully. Lots of the pals feel familiar, yet are not. Also unless it is added. The pals do not evolve at least not yet... and unknown if this will be added or not. That said... I will say that there are a lot of pals that are familiar, Yet are removed from the pokemon franchise enough that Game freak/nintendo can't hit them for it. At least not easily.
Also lots of the ones saying that some mon are the same or same enough nintendo could sue happen to be salty game devs that are parts of failing game corporations. though Not all of them are. Some could be nintendo pokemon stands.
@@mightypancake2211
There's an "evolution" mechanic in Palworld, but it doesn't change how the pal looks. It just increases their stats/skills by condensing a bunch of other pals of the same type.
And honestly, putting the cow in "lawsuit tier?" Nobody owns the copyright for "cow". That one was ridiculous.
I think the cow one was a joke
@@wumpusrat Calling what is effectively a gacha star rank system "evolution" is really stretching it dude. "Oh, your 0 star Cattiva can become a 1 star Cattiva if you get 4 more cattiva and sacrifice them to rank it up. Now you gotta get 16 for a 2 star. Now you gotta get 32 for a 3 star! 64 cattiva for a 4 star!"
That's not evolution, that's a gacha game's attempt to make pulling dupes worthwhile, but placed into a game that doesn't use predatory marketing to try to get you to spend wild amounts of money to get max characters.
The cow was very clearly a joke.
Most things you considered original, seemed quite familiar to me. Since Pokemon is the most widely known monster catching franchise it's easy to just assess rip-offs from there. But aside from Pokemon, Loomian Legacy being the most likely one in the list, I've seen many rip-offs in your original tier.
Wait, I just realise something if Pokémon was going to do like bass building game or something like that don’t really know. Get people to think that they are copying PaLWOLD
The silliest part of all this is that many of the "too close for comfort" designs could've been further differentiated by just not copying the color scheme on top of similar design elements/inspiration.
A lot of these are also more of a reskinned different pokemon using animations. Like the calamari isnt a squid pokemon clone but a drifloon clone
legit a good handful of these would be original enough if they just changed the color schemes, i think they designed it like that with purpose to farm the inevitable controversy the same way andy and leyley put in incest so the outrage would spread the word
too close for comfort still isn’t “the same” so they really had no obligation to change anything further
The question is, why did the devs not bother doing just that? The AI theory seems more convincing to me after watching this. It's like they trained ai by inserting all the official pokemon designs. Easy for the artists to pick the best mashups it then created, and use them as "inspiration".
To be fair this isn't a fully released game ... So if Nintendo came and called it copywrite material all they would have to do is make those changes to be more distinct
Y’know I just realized that the argument is slightly harder to prove if they gave them more dynamic poses and a more distinct shader.
Slightly more details on the fur

I agree with the majority of these tier rankings, but honestly, I feel like there ought to be a split for a tier of "you can't copyright something so generic". And also, a small category of "Wait no, this is a digimon instead." Doing detailed analysis of each pal like this individually makes me realize how many subconscious color schemes I've absorbed over the years and small design elements.
I had the exact same thoughts of "too generic to be copyrightable" and "digimon class". I'd have also liked a category for "actually good designs", there are like 5 of those that would be nice to highlight as something positive.

Think of it this way: Pokemon's a game with that, 1000+ Pokemon at this point? If you make a game similar to it in genre, some Pals are *bound* to look similar to them, just because it's a sheer numbers game
Turns out when Pokemon are closely based on real animals , other monsters in other games look similar
☝🏽☝🏽☝🏽
They're based on real animals but completely separated by the features of how cartoonish they look, the art style as well, this is like saying nothing can plagiarized cuz everything is based on something
@TearsOfThem you can't coin an art style though, plagerism is defined as the genuine theft or copying of a preexisting work.
Don't get me wrong, I grew up on pokemon and started playing palworld with my husband with the mindset that the monsters in pals where just rips of pocket monsters. I do often find myself being able to ramble about how some pals look like fusions of 2-3 mons.
But the more I see them the more I just think majority are inspired not directly ripped.
If an art style could be copy righted, all of anime would be in deep trouble.
Some pokemon yes but there are so many pokemon that aren't closely based on animals and are just fantasy creatures. You can't defend the models where the colors are the same and the models are very similar. It's not easy to copy a standing owl furry archer with autumn colors. Even with pokemon that are similar to animals it's still gonna be difficult to get as close as they do with their designs.
Nah, I've seen other Pokémon inspired games before, and none of them have designs this bland and similar to Pokémon.
I'm sad that you're saying that Rayhound is suspicious when it's literally just a pun on a grayhound as an electric dog
