    Love all the comments and support! Thank you so much. To those concerned I am going to change my video style and format, I want to reassure you that I am not. This was just one of those days. Four cars to do and not enough time to film them all like I would like and a shop that needs an answer, that's all it was. There will be more like this at times. The choice was either not film it at all or do one like this. I just figured you guys would like a little of something rather than nothing. Make sense? Thanks again everyone. I hear you loud and clear! I will keep teaching!!

      ScannerDanner love that you are able to call a fault on your knowledge of what should be, can you link to or advise on a good database of known good or factory specs or is what you know purely based on experience?

    Your teaching style is outstanding already, there is no reason to change it. The way you digress to discussion of alternative approaches is brilliant, teaching to a much bigger audience than those with the specific set of tools that only a pro would have. Watching how you formulate a list of likely diagnoses while you are working is really helpful, especially during the initial test drive and exam.

    Several things influence fuel pressure while the engine is running such as the fuel pressure regulator setting, ambient temperature, coolant temperature, percentage of throttle opening, altitude above sea level, overall engine condition and engine load. All of which have a direct affect on fuel injector pulse width, which directly affects fuel pressure. Due to these variables, GM does not publish any “engine running” fuel pressure specifications for this system. Fuel pressure and leakdown must be tested with the engine off. Fuel pressure: Key ON, engine OFF, (fuel pump will run for ~2 seconds and shut off). Fuel pressure must be checked when the pump is running: Pressure must be 60 psi to 66 psi. It must remain above 55 psi for at least 10 minutes after the pump shuts off.

    I had experienced this "weak" pump with my former ford f150 and my wife's toyota 4runner. Both pumps worked, hummed and all. Fuel pressure was up, but weak. People around me argued that if it's spraying fuel out of the port, then it's not the pump. Both cases, I replaced the fuel pumps and the issues were fixed. I argued that it can spray and still be weak. They said no lol. I'm a DIY type of mechanic. My ford had the exact same symptom with pushing the throttle down. Awesome video.

  • @jmwxj

    I know this is an older video but it's the gift that keeps on giving and I thank you for it!
    My mother in law's 97 S10, 4.3 had the exact same symptoms at your truck in the video. I was sure it needed a fuel pump and was dreading having to do it. Anyway, after watching your video I went out and checked the fuel pressure and amazingly it jumped right up to 61-62 psi when the throttle was blipped even with the backfiring and falling on its face. Hmm, fuel pump was okay.. The thing that saved me was what you said about the MAF sensor. I was clueless. There were no codes for it and i had no idea what the symptoms of a bad MAF were but I unplugged it and amazingly it ran perfect, Problem identified and a hell of a lot easier than a fuel pump would have been. So thankful I came across your video!

      @@ScannerDanner Well, I ordered a new one as soon as you taught me how to troubleshoot it, which I'm okay with. I'm just so happy not to have to change a fuel pump (although that's probably going to come up soon too).

  • @saltcar

    I had the exactly the same symptoms running that you show. My fuel pressure was 60-65 and it didn't vary a bit so I assumed the pump was ok. After much thought, I realized these injection systems are also sensitive to FLOW. Good flow is needed to crack the poppets at each cylinder so I thought maybe the filter was restricting it. Turns out it was. New filter, same pressure reading, runs like a champ!
    You'd think a flow problem would have shown up in the pressure gauge when you opened the throttle, but it didn't. I can't say these injection systems are bad, because I have 225,000 miles on mine, but turns out they are more sensitive to BOTH pressure and flow than port injected designs.

    This is a good lesson in how quickly you can diagnose a system. You knew very quickly that it was probably a fuel delivery problem, eliminated the MAF Sensor and checked the pressures. DONE.... Needs a pump! Then went a bit further to confirm the bad pump. Case in point, a quick Current Check of the pump at the relay told you that Power & Ground at the pump were good, THEN you expanded on it and even did an RPM check that would fit with a slow turning pump having a volume problem. You also explained that pressure OK on deadhead check, but of course Supply Volume is NOT a factor when no fuel is being consumed. You cant always take this approach, but when you can, it will build confidence on the part of those that can follow it easily, BUT ALSO, explain the methods & rational to those that are learning..... and we are ALL learning. BRAVO!

      ScannerDanner yeah I did. One Saturday afternoon on Facebook?. I really studied hard at school. 80,000 pounds in New England you gotta have good Brakes. I follow you on Facebook.
      I discovered your videos trying to figure out my 44 code on my 1995 Chevrolet LT-1 vin code “P” “Coprice” that sits far too much. I just found his one too in my quest to get my car registered again. Though the tests have gotten much better still not passing. Still can’t get my “Coprice” through emissions. 🙄. Driving me crazy.
      I told the young tech that does the test about you, I’m not sure if he’s taken my suggestion. I sent him this link to the garage he works at thinking it might tweet his curiosity if he knew you can figure out the fuel pump rpm with waveform on a scope. That BLEW ME AWAY. And yes. We followed the math. Your a great example for the kids in far more than fixing cars. Follow your bliss and you’ll never work a day in your life. Eh? God bless you.

    I like your watching 02 sensors at wide open throttle. Cant be a regulator because the rpm goes higher. I like your rpm testing. Plugged fuel filter but if your system needs a filter that bad and you change its already heated the pump so bad that the pump usually dies out not long after the damage caused from a bad filter. I have found a lot of people over-complicate diagnosis of faults from not having a good base understanding of what vehicle systems should do in given conditions, experience and a good deductive understanding is key to finding problems.

In the summer when the outdoor temp. exceeds 85 F and my engine temp. reaches 205 F to 212 F when I feed gas it hesitates and stalls but starts right up with no problem starting. It will run as long as I don't try to accelerate. Please HELP. Thank you .....Joe

      nabeelr vacuum at closed throttle regulates fuel pressure to a lower pressure, more fuel is returned to tank. As the manifold vacuum is decreased with throttle valve opening, fuel pressure is increased.

    • @MrSamadolfo
      @MrSamadolfo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      🤓 Makes Sense, Vacuum Fuel Pressure Regulator has an air hose just like the Vacuum Advance on a Distributor has an air hose, when u step on the gas pedal you create a vacuum leak, a drop in vacuum changes the fuel pressure going to the injectors, I imagine you want more fuel pressure if you step on the gas bliiiiiiiiiiiiii 🚤😍🚩

    • @2secondslater
      @2secondslater 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrSammy vacuum is greatest at closed throttle, when you open the throttle vacuum is reduced, wide open throttle is atmospheric pressure. The fuel pressure regulator decreases fuel pressure at high manifold vacuum and increases it as manifold vacuum is decreased.

    • @MrSamadolfo
      @MrSamadolfo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake Elliott 🙂 sounds good, except for the atmospheric part, I think u always have to have at least a little bit of vacuum even at WOT, unless its Super Charged yay! bliiiiiiiii 🚤😍🚩

    Very informative! I have a 2003 s10 that I have been getting p0300 code and have been chasing ignition porblems. Everything in the Ignition system is new and all AC Delco. After looking a LTFT, they increase during Acceleration leading me towards MAF or Fuel Pressure. The MAF according to my Scanner is good. Clened it and still no change! Noticed fuel pressure was static 58psi and running 49-50 psi. Changed fuel filter and made a slight pressure increase and p0300 stopped for two days. Noticed pressure dropped back to where it was, so I changed the pump and still the pressure was the same and I hate being a parts changer. I believe this truck has the same pump pressure and from what I found is static should be 60-66. I did amp test and it was 7.92 almost 8.00 amps. Next I did a Voltage drop test and found that the positive side had a .9 volt drop. I am waiting on my Manual to come in, had to order one because none of my part stores carry it. I want to verify pressure. My next thing is to trace the wire from the fuse block back to the pump to find my Voltage Drop. Great Video! Shows me I'm on the right path.

    This is the first video ive found on youtube that makes me want to go to patreon and sponsor... for just this information alone. Ive been chasing the same, if not very similar, problem on my 99 burban for years... Ive had a feeling its been supply issues all along, however after 2 pumps, many filters and a pressure regulator, the problem persists.... BUT ONLY WHEN COLD.... when warm the hesitation lessens significantly, IF and WHEN i can get it to start. Ive been wanting to get the type 2 scanner to read all the GM sensors to zero it better but its hard to justify the cost for the few GM vehicles i run. Now i can pursue the problem with a gauge and a bit more knowledge that i may be dropping the tank again. THANK YOU.

      @@ScannerDanner thank you danner. I picked up a gauge today at hf and gave it a checkin... key on, 60psi, start truck and runs down to 52 or so. Holds at 52 under throttle, engine turned off, back to 60....im thinking my pump is running ok, so back to the intermittent, warm hard starts.. Ive read "somewhere" the resistance in the engine temp sensor runs back to the pcm to trim fuel, leading me to believe there may be a resistance problem in that sensor, hence the hard starts when warm. Thats my first guess, so ill ohm it out at the temp specs tomorrow. Next guess would be making sure pump has the recommended supply of voltage at all times, and ground... however thats not going to have much to do with the temp of engine during the hard starts. Thanks for the help, im going to get to the bottom of this problem someday! Next steps i guess, Im going to look into making darn sure that pump is working as it should, how the fuel pressure regulator can or will affect gauge readings, and learn how that temp sensor affects the pcm. Again, much appreciated!

I ran it thru torque scanner and found b2s2 to have flatline low voltage, exhqust leak.... so i rebuilt the exhaust system. Im hoping the hard start after warm condition was just the fuel trim leaving the engine flooded, compensating for the extra air downstream. Time will tell, ill drive it this week, note the starting, ltft and stft.

    Hey, i know this is a long one but I have a Nissan Sylphy 2006, and it does have a problem with power. First off, i do experience a delayed driving force when i step on the gas especially when the engine is hot and not in motion. This happens more so when a high torque is needed for the vehicle to move either foward or backwards. For instance when i come to a complete stop and i have to go over a bump or ramp of some sort, stepping on the gas wont make it go over immediately as i will have to deeply accelerate for a few seconds..say 7 sec..for it to even start moving. Its movement will be extremely slow until it gains momentum and after which everything works as its supposed to. Whilst all these happens, the rev conter on the dash stays stationery and does not act as though there’s no acceleration at all up until the vehicle moves. My Mech had to change the throttle sensor, had its transmission control unit replaced and also checked the exhaust system for any leakages but no show. I have constantly stayed dirty on it, moving shop to shop but it seems to prove a headache for everybody. Any help/suggestions will be highly appreciated.

    Paul
    Love your videos. Also a paid subscribers on your ScannerDanner channel. After watching this video, I can't believe that 52 psi fuel pressure is not enough to run vehicle at high rpms. The specs. calls out to be between 55 and 65 psi. I agree with you that I didn't like the scope reading on the fuel pump and that the pump was running at only 3000 rpm. Fuel pump need pressure and VOLUME. Most of your videos don't show volume tests performed to condemn the pump. In this case, since the fuel pressure was 52 psi, maybe that should have been done.
    If the fuel pressure was only 30 to 40 psi during idle, I would understand that the fuel pump was starting to fail. But at 52 psi, even when you put your foot all the way down to the floor, the pressure did not go below 50 psi. Since you didn't show an after shot after replacing the fuel pump, I'm a little concern about a defective pump. I do believe that the pump was defective based on the low rpm but if I didn't have a scope, I wouldn't have condemn the fuel pump on pressure alone.
    My only concern is that this system is that sensitive? It hard to believe that.
    Keep coming with the videos. Thank

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is that sensitive and it is a very unique system that used mechanical poppet nozzles that will not even open below 50 psi. Hope that helps, great question!

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have some lectures on this system in my fuel system chapters 13, 14, 15 and 16. Since you are a premium subscriber, be sure to check them out okay?

    • @zolinhpkins1896
      @zolinhpkins1896 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely right about the poppet valve type system. They make an upgraded system that eliminates the poppet valves, and if it had this system, it probably would have still run fine, although the fuel trims would have been high. And the pump probably would have still failed completely eventually.
