Yahtzee, Yahtzee, Yahtzee. Don't you know that skirts play an IMPORTANT, INTRICATE ROLE TO THE PLOT in these games? The shorter it is, the better the game will be.
They mistook the developers name for the game's English equivalent name back in the day even though Zero was the equivalent right in the title. The games real title is 零~Zero, 零 (Rei) which means Zero/Nothing but is a homophone for Ghost/Spirit. Either someone assumed the character meant "Project" or they weren't really trying at their job.
+ShadowWolfRising Anyone else notice that Yahtzee didn't realise that (for once), the title wasn't changed for the US release? I know it's not exactly commonplace now, but it used to be the done thing for US releases of Japanese games so I can see where his confusion lies, especially when you take into account that EU releases generally kept the original title but changed it here for no reason other than it had the word 'fatal' in it (scary word after all.)
+Mrdarkcookie95 I'm confused then too. the name of the games in the US is Fatal Frame, changed from the Zero/Project Zero title used in Japan and Europe. so...how are we confused?
Whoops, seems I misread the information :P I probably should have doubled checked before posting...ah well, bit late for that now. in my defense though, the Wiki pages for the series don't exactly have the best wording... Once again, honest mistake...honest :P
+MarketableProfit Probably the most original comment I've seen the past five years. Have a happy new year. I don't say that sarcastically or lightly either.
My biggest issue with this game was that, while beautiful to look at, it was like watching a movie where the whole cast was comprised of supermodels with no acting experience. They couldn't emote for shit! That's what really took me out of the immersion. If the 'scared' young woman couldn't look Scared, then why should I be scared?
I just realized the original title of this series, Project Zero, does in fact make sense, but only if you speak Japanese. This is because one of the syllables for ghost (yurei) in Japanese is "rei" which is their word for zero. Fatal Frame is certainly a nice rename for western audiences, and I approve of localization teams taking the effort to adapt something in a new way which simply wouldn't translate otherwise.
I've only tried the demo, with my best friend, and we had a rather fun encounter though. Got to some sort of shrine with tons of dolls on the outside, and I told my friend "wouldn't it be funny if I brought up the camera, and a ghost was standing right in front of us?" to which she just chuckled and said "suuure, as if they'd pull that on us" she then checked her phone and scratched her eye or something, and I brought up the camera and a fucking ghost lunged at us and I screamed at the top of my lungs and she started spazzing out because of my screaming. all in all, we ended up quitting the demo at that point, because we thought we had achieved the biggest scare in the game and saw no further reason to play more of it.
I know Undertale is great but now I can't seem to get the thought of "filling with determination" being a sexual innuendo of "getting an erection". This is why we keep references to games they are actually in.
+silverstarinthesky The unfortunate irony being that the comments section on the host site Escapist IMMEDIATELY got slammed by some douchenozzles doing exactly that, shortly followed by a bunch of other people getting itno arguments with them. Fortunately that got drowned out over time, but youtube comments section is actually still the LESS septic one.
+silverstarinthesky It might be because it's incredibly difficult to tell when he's serious, or because the escapist's audience is used to feminist commentary with Jim Sterling or Moviebob
+TheAlmightyOctopus er... This vid came out* last week on the escapist online magazine, they come out there one week, and here the following week *edit cause I forgot it :v
I for one am a fervent supporter of Japanese schoolgirls wearing ultra thin cotton shirts and cockteasing miniskirts. God forbid the day comes when it isn't the mandatory uniform in Japan. All would be lost.
Just a note that the Escapist holds all Yahtzee's videos for a week before releasing them on youtube. So in the world of a week ago, it is indeed almost Christmas.
As someone who imported the 4th game that is japanese exclusive, my sentiments are that Maiden of Black Water is a sloppy downstep in every aspect, except for the atmosphere, the atmosphere in these games never fail me.
I just got done watching every episode of Zero Punctuation ever, just did some math and found out that's over 17 hours of video. [Achievement Unlocked: Nothing Better To DO] . Just wanted to say thank you for all the great content. Also, XCOM 2 is scheduled to release in Febuary, hope you've seen the recent videos for it because it looks fuckin sick bro.
I am under the impression that Nintendo, and especially NoA, REALLY hates this game series. Between refusing to release Mask of the Lunar Eclipse outside of Japan (though rumors are circulating Europe will be getting a limited release soon), not releasing Deep Crimson Butterfly in North America, and making this game digital download only to all who didn't buy the European exclusive special edition, makes it seem as if they don't give two shits about the series nor its fans. Yeah, you can use the excuse that the games never did sell that well, but that is no reason to alienate people who do enjoy it and kick them while they are down.
Alright guys! This is the last vid to cash in your Top and Bottom 5 predictions! Top 5 of 2015 Bloodbourne Until Dawn Splatoon The Witcher III Just Cause 3 Bottom 5 of 2015 Alone In The Dark: Illumination Godzilla The Order: 1886 Call of Duty: Black Ops III Hatred
he isn't gonna put BLOPS3 in the bottom, it wasn't bad enough or offensive enough to put in the buttom 5. It's just average/mediocre. Nit sure what he would put as the last one though. made an effort to forget every game that was terrible this year. Like I forgot The Order came out this year lol
2:40 "Fatal Frame Pirates of Dark Water, Oh who remembers that?! " I do Yhatz ^_^ not sure why more people dont talk about it since it was essentially not-anime Pirates of the Caribbean spending a surprising lot of money for the infamously tight fisted Hanna-Barbera and had better then average writing for a cartoon made in the early 90's
I remember Pirates of Black Water. Was a good show to fill the time slot - which had nothing else interesting in the least. For some reason, my pet iguana loved watching it. Thanks for making me feel old Yahtzee :p
in japanese the "zero" is written as 零 (read as "rei" means zero) which is a homophone to "霊” (which means ghost/ spirit etc) so the japanese name was a pun
I actually liked the game pad controls and felt they helped with immersion... of course I played it in a dark room, which helps me stay in the game world, but it's a horror game, you're meant to turn the lights off, even Silent Hill 2 only manages mild discomfort with the lights on... The one problem I had with that though is the stick doesn't turn with the gamepad so when I turn the gamepad to get more things in shot and then try and step backwards I end up going at some diagonal or sidle left or right and suddenly my immersion is broken; had that been fixed I would have been really down with the gamepad controls... Sadly, practically every other complaint you have is valid. If this gameplay (with sorted out directional controls) was in Fatal Frame IV it would've been an amazing game (god the Wii controls sucked), but as is it's structurally the worst Fatal Frame (well, apart from Spirit Camera the Cursed Memoir, but that is an AR game...) held up by a control scheme that manages through one simple oversight to ruin all the theoretical greatness it could bring... I mean I think they could take this and make a great sequel, but this is the weakest of the series for sure...
+SheezyBites And it'll probably be the last. Nintendo seems to dislike the series and seeing all the negative complaints about it will just confirm their views on it to prevent any more from releasing. If nobody liked it, why make more?
+MoonlitLycan Where do you get Nintendo not liking it from? They seem fairly supportive of it with Miyamoto appearing at the reveal event and all... They may be less supportive for being too niche, but since KT will probably want to make another I don't see why they'd kill it...
SheezyBites Most articles i have read on this game have stated Nintendo, or at the very least NoA, isn't a very big fan of this series, which was one of the reasons why they made the game digital download only (since they felt a physical copy wouldn't sell well enough to make a profit). They've also shown to not really care about the games/fans when Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was kept only in Japan (though rumors have stated Europe might be seeing that game for a limited time sale sometime in near future) and Deep Crimson Butterfly was released everywhere BUT North America. So maybe I should rephrase and say it is merely Nintendo of America that dislikes the game series while NoE and NoJ are more or less indifferent to it.
+MoonlitLycan Ah, that sounds more like it, NoA are really detached from reality. Lunar Eclipse though would be a nice surprise for us Europeans, the controls suck and it was buggy, but the environment and structure was the best in the series imo (though 2s story keeps it higher in my estimation).
***** I didn't say the controls were buggy, the game itself was buggy and the controls weren't very good (maybe sucked is too harsh, but I certainly didn't like them).
If you're wondering why there's no update this week, it's because Yahtzee didn't upload any new update last week, but he did this week! Lookie at what he did: puu.sh/mm56J/c1ea162e36.jpg Seriously, hurry to the Escapist's website and watch it!
To be fair, Japanese women and girls really do wear very little clothing. Even in the dead of winter in 6" of snow, they will wear miniskirts that barely cover their ass; they simply glue socks to their legs in a pathetic attempt to maintain some sense of warmth. I regularly saw women in skits getting so cold that their legs were literally turning blue but they would done the same miniskirt the next day.
It is a pity how Fatal Frame has degraded. What happened to FF2 where they actually characterize the relationship between the twins constantly giver her back to you then taking her away so that you had constant agency to find her. Then after all of this emotion building they make you choose, your sister or you release hell upon Earth... Ya suck on that Life is Stange fans who thought that your game was original and had a riveting ending, they were ripping off a PS2 game
To answer your final question... Yes. lol Man, the one thing I can always appreciate about this guy is that he rags on things media outlets are too afraid to rag on. cuz da popularz.
Does anyone actually know what happened to the escapist channel, there used to be tones of things on here and now there's just Yahtzee (which is far from a bad thing) but I mean Jim managed to get his own Channel using patron I don't see why Yahtzee couldn't do the same thing.
+Ted Mitchell No idea. Maybe he's still stuck in contract, maybe it's a good enough deal for him that he doesn't want to leave. Either way I'm glad this channel is only Yahtzee, he's was the only thing on the site worth watching anyway after Jim left. I mean every once in awhile they have some random girl doing some live stream on here, but that's easily dismissed from my subscription feed.
+mjc0961 Yeah tbh though, a lot of the women they had on the escapist channel just kinda made me cringe. They were just try hards. It felt like they prioritised pretty women over women who actually know anything about games (and we do exist). If they maybe just sacrificed the idea of having to have a gorgeous woman talking about the games (which let's face it, wasn't helping get views ANYWAY) and got a chick who actually knew something about video games, I might have been more interested.
+Ted Mitchell I'm pretty sure Yahtzee's already said before he's just going to stick with Escapist. And I know what you mean, recently it's basically been an endless streak of Zero Punctuation and Judging by the Cover vids.
Reading all the reviews especially Jim Sterling's. And even played the demo and I am having mix feeling the whole game. I think this might me a shame for this game, since i am fan of this series ( favorite one is FF: crimson butterfly) Oh well. The good thing Xenoblade Chronicles X made up for (Fatal Frame): Maiden of Black Water.
+Felipe M. yeah if i remember the US only got a digital release >3< I think i heard about the storage space taking up alot but it is one of those games I might get or not.
+Felipe M. The £60 special edition or digital download with device based account put me off this one also. WiiU games are expensive enough that I refuse to own anything but the disc versions I was only mildly interested in this one and TBH the price and limited availability put me off.
It doesn't make it not worth playing, it's just a bit sad that a writer can't think of a way to make a character appealing beyond stapling on a big bouncing pair of tits and barely covering them. It's lazy. You can make something sexy without being lazy, but nobody cares enough to try.
+14Schofield For real. If you ready TH-cam comments for seemingly any game involving female characters, you'd swear that feminists are everywhere trying to shut down any game with tits in them. It's fucking embarrassing - these GamerGate assholes have become more whiny than the people they claim to be against.
I feel like the ending screen should wait 2 to 3 seconds to allow us to enjoy the end joke more. I know Yahtzee 's older stuff did this and I quite enjoyed it. Naturally this is my own subjective opinion, but I wonder if any one else feels the same way about the ending screen.
"One or more schoolgirls with skirts so short you can practically see their labial folds poking out the bottom like the questing feelers of a tunneling spider." Well, I see Yahtzee's still not gay.
Yahtzee, Yahtzee, Yahtzee. Don't you know that skirts play an IMPORTANT, INTRICATE ROLE TO THE PLOT in these games? The shorter it is, the better the game will be.
+Sulthan14 Wasn't the one in three wearing pants?
+UsonoHoushi I meant Japanese horror games in general.
Sulthan14 Resident Evil...? Silent Hill...?
+UsonoHoushi *sigh* I'll just delete this comment later..
+UsonoHoushi She also takes a shower in that game. Yup
They mistook the developers name for the game's English equivalent name back in the day even though Zero was the equivalent right in the title.
The games real title is 零~Zero, 零 (Rei) which means Zero/Nothing but is a homophone for Ghost/Spirit. Either someone assumed the character meant "Project" or they weren't really trying at their job.
translations, project zero is the direct translation but fatal frame is the title that got the meaning down
"Fatal" "Frame"
I never bothered to care about the title of this game. But damn, its so simple.
+Derikimi simple, catchy, relevant.
Credit where credit is due, it's a good name for the series.

If the 'scared' young woman couldn't look Scared, then why should I be scared?
The thing that broke my immersion, was the FPS controls. Halfway through, I was actively searching for ghosts like Doomguy, ready to F their Sht up!
Put the subtitles on and have it in Japanese
"I was wondering why the female ghosts were rocking more cleavage than the san Andreas fault"
probably one of the best lines ive heard from Yahtzee
"No, please don't flick with your towels, tee hee." Always gets me.
Zero also means ghost in Japanese. So Project Zero equals Project Ghost. Though I do prefer Fatal Frame.
+Michael Duarte “GameBoy99YT” Call of Duty Zero confirmed

all in all, we ended up quitting the demo at that point, because we thought we had achieved the biggest scare in the game and saw no further reason to play more of it.
Pirates of dark water was one of the best cartoons ever.
Shame it ended on a cliffhanger...
Knowing that Yahtzee will one day review *HuniePop*
it fills me with determination!
Same
No. Get your determination out of here.
I know Undertale is great but now I can't seem to get the thought of "filling with determination" being a sexual innuendo of "getting an erection". This is why we keep references to games they are actually in.
+Branton G his determination would bring him back
+Damon Finn undertale is wonderful, I will concede the point on huniepop.
The Pirates of Dark Water reference made my week. Thank you, Yahtzee.
I've noticed that Yahtzee is the only TH-camr who can point out something sexist in a video game without a lot of people getting very pissed off.

Their skirts are short because the camera is actually kept in the labial folds...

Holy shit my nostalgia revved up, I remember Pirates of Dark Water
Now that I've started playing the game I can say that it really is nice to play on a swivel chair. I can spin around if I need to.
Pirates of Dark Water...Extreme Ghostbusters's cousin down from the shore
I remember pirates of dark water.....good times
I scrolled down to say The Pirates of Dark Water was rad as fuck.

Yahtzee absolutely doesn't need The Escapist, but they need him. He's by far the most popular part.
+LittleBigEnNer *cough cough* only good part
I remember "Pirates of Dark Water." I remember the art style being really cool.
this isn't undertale
Patrick Gillard I'll check it out, thanks
+Patrick Gillard woo yahtzee likes undertale!!
+Patrick Gillard * www.escapistmagazine.com/ , your link leads to something weird.

+a hobo Good game, destroyed be a community worse then Dota and Lol put together in the same room that is the size of a closet.
Drunken self reflection is the scariest thing of all time. Great review, saved me some money and time.
I look forward to the best and worst of the year sir
I died when I heard "I fucking counted!"
+MegAnimefreakx3
Did Jim get past the first level this time?
+Felipe M. yeah if i remember the US only got a digital release >3< I think i heard about the storage space taking up alot but it is one of those games I might get or not.
+Wreck-It Rolfe i don't remember ( at least top off my head) since it been two months since I last read his review :/
+Felipe M. The £60 special edition or digital download with device based account put me off this one also. WiiU games are expensive enough that I refuse to own anything but the disc versions I was only mildly interested in this one and TBH the price and limited availability put me off.
+MegAnimefreakx3 i bought the limited edition with no regrets
I was expecting a nod to Pirates of Dark Water.
You did not disappoint, Yahtzee.
Oh japanese, you ALWAYS have to put some sexual theme in your games do you? Ex: Metal Gear Phantom Pain's character, Quiet
You have a problem with that?
Dylan Mitchell not a problem, but it irks me a bit
It doesn't make it not worth playing, it's just a bit sad that a writer can't think of a way to make a character appealing beyond stapling on a big bouncing pair of tits and barely covering them. It's lazy. You can make something sexy without being lazy, but nobody cares enough to try.
will there be a episode today on the zp website?
i can smell the radical feminists
+Derik Really? All I see are MRA fuckboys complaining about the last few comments.
+14Schofield For real. If you ready TH-cam comments for seemingly any game involving female characters, you'd swear that feminists are everywhere trying to shut down any game with tits in them. It's fucking embarrassing - these GamerGate assholes have become more whiny than the people they claim to be against.
MekanikKommandoh88 I could not agree more. :\
+Derik Where?
ARandomGuy everywere
So Luigi's Manson but with a girl instead of Luigi and a camera instead of a vacuum.
I am the one person who appreciated that Pirates of Dark Water joke. Thank you for that incredibly specific appeal to my interests.
I like how you hold the controller backwards
"we're not in a haunted forest, we're in our flat..." I died
Puts Yahtzee on 2x speed, sounds like he had about a gallon of coffee.
Glorious!
Could you imagine
(girl) sees ghost yelling at wall
(Ghost) "come on talk"
(Girl) "whelp I'm insane bye"
4:37 is the funniest moments on zero punctuation in 2015
I feel like the ending screen should wait 2 to 3 seconds to allow us to enjoy the end joke more. I know Yahtzee 's older stuff did this and I quite enjoyed it.
Naturally this is my own subjective opinion, but I wonder if any one else feels the same way about the ending screen.
"almost christmas"
maybe in your backwards upside down continent
Or that was the case two weeks ago during the production.
+eli alhussaini That was the case when it was on the Escapist you baka!
"Its almost Christmas!"

I loved pirates of dark water as a kid. Wonder if I can find it anywhere and see what it's like as an adult.
what am i watching and where can i find more
"One or more schoolgirls with skirts so short you can practically see their labial folds poking out the bottom like the questing feelers of a tunneling spider."
Well, I see Yahtzee's still not gay.
I REMEMBER IT YAHTZEE!!
Pirates of the Dark Water was the shit back in the day.
I think that image of the block of flats is the one I used to live in
Pirates of dark water! Where there's a subquest to complete the hero's sword.
Loved Pirates of Darkwater. Rin is the man!
Pirates of Dark Water reference made my day
"rocking more cleavage than the San Andreas fault"
this line fucking killed me lmao
Almost christmas he says....
It was two weeks ago during the making of the video.
Yeah! Almost Christmas 2016! Who's excited guys?! Oh... Just me then...
