John is one of the best interviews, he is generous with his time and so forthcoming with information and details. Like sitting down with an extremely gifted and talented buddy who enjoys being with you as much as you enjoy his company. Great interview!
yeah but to me these interviews are always a little bit... i'm not gonna say boring but just standard you know, they don't really talk about something that makes petrucci, or whatever the subject, personality stand out, for the lack of a better word; for example i would like he talked about gym, maybe about family, even music both as a wider concept, like facing some critics, history of music, and so on, and as his music, like delve into some of his songs, or for example i'd have question about his idea of guitar sound; last but not least a bit about internet culture, there are many guitar channels that you can quote and take inspiration from, or another question i'd like to ask: how are the previous album selling, stuff like that; in the end just make it more interesting, after having seen many personalities do this (but mainly craig ferguson) i bet this could be much more entertaining
@@luvincste Petrucci's answered most of these questions you mentioned so many times in other interviews, maybe this guy just wanted to ask his own questions
@@karlkanner3467 are there interviews where jp talks about how much rice he eats? (who goes to the gym knows), does he clean the toilet at home? does he like growl or clean singing? what's the 3rd section of happy song about? what's the last book he read? and so on... i've not seen that many of his interviews, i'll admit, still it's really rare to find one where they talk of not musical topics; "ask his own questions" and what where those? how much time did it take to make the album... touring... songwriting... everyone could have asked those questions, again they're pretty much standard
@@luvincste i was answering a specific person, the guy above me who i replied to, almost everything that guy asked about in his comment has been answered by petrucci in other interviews. i'd suggest you try google. it's your friend.
John Petrucci has a way to lift peoples spirits and make em smile its always so admirable. Hes truly as wholesome as he is skilled. ;o;

@Gray Matter Collider I have heard him discussing multiple times how he goes back and re-learns some tracks for live...My question is different though.
I think his sweep picking has improved a lot the last say 8 years or so
I can't remember who said this but it went something along the lines of...
Person 1: You are 80 years old, why do you continue to practice the guitar for so many hours a day?
Person 2: I'm starting to see some improvement.
Excellent interview. I highly suggest people check out the bass interview with Tony Levin on this channel as well. What strikes me so much is not so much that these guys are amazing musicians (oh, we know), but just how damn nice they are. Guitarists and bassists will certainly be inspired in their musical pursuits by them, but I just feel inspired to be a better, nicer person listening to them. Musical phenoms; wholesome af. Love it.
That ambient part in Rhapsody in Blue is one of my favorite parts, i was curious to know how they would recreate it. Kinda “sad” to know it’s taken from the live recording. The bright side is we’re sure it’s not messed up!
Great gathering of musicians. Happy to see them playing with Mike again. Met Jordan one time. Such a nice guy. Absolute monster of a player. Mind blowing watching him play while standing right next to him.
My buddy worked for Jordan for years. He really is an awesome human being.
Hopefully, LTE can get together and do some live-recorded video jams of the new album when it drops. That'd be cool, if touring is not a probability.
I like the 427BJP pick, it's a keeper that could only benefit from the addition of some "max-grip" grip. I still remember buying my 1st Jazz III from Bogner sound & music, 20 years ago... That music store, closed, but I still have those picks - red and black Jazz IIIs. Always got some kind of Jazz III in my pocket, right now, I've got a max-grip, a KH sig, a peavey teardrop shape, a white Tortex. I like to use a variety of plectrums, as well as my fingers, so that I don't get "stuck" using 1 over another.

When is the album out? On Spotify there are only a couple of singles from the album.
I know it’s a cliche, but… Holy crap, how are there 5 ppl who’d downvote this?!? (I, for the record, enjoyed it. Even more, it should be noted, than this channel’s interview with my hero Tony Levin.)
And BTH the Trinity pick is the best Jazz 3 pick ever created....I tried it after 15 years in Jazz 3 1.14mm and never looked back again....The only pick that allows go back to your other picks as well with no issues of readjusting yourself....
I hope they apply the mix/miking of MP’s kit on MM’s kit for the new DT album, since MP’s kit is in the DT studio. MP’s sound in the studio is just amazing. I hope they can apply that to MM’s kit. That would be awesome! Just wishful thinking.
Even if MM played that same kit as it is set up it wouldn’t sound the same, let alone when the kit is switched! We have to just accept it, or, as i did, stop listening to (newer) DT.

Oooh yeahhhhhhhhhea. I remember sneaking into my university’s theater with a buddy who played piano and we’d rock out Rhapsody in Blue it was so fun. Till security would hear us and chase us out. You ever try running flat out carrying a squire strat and a gorilla amp?

20 years ago, I traded a set of K2 aggressive inline skates for a small Gorilla amp. My 1st amp. flash forward some years and my friends mom sold it for heroin money... stayed the night and in the morning I took my strat and new 2x12 amp home (only 3 blocks) and when I went back to get the other guitar and gorilla amp, they were gone. Never saw them again, never seen another left handed Westbury Custom in 15 years. My friend was unaware of what his mom did, so I didn't blame him.

It's a real shame Portnoy left DT, because their music is not the same anymore. But at least we have these special moments when the guys get back together and deliver just another great piece of art. With the bonus of not having Labrie in!
Dream Theaters music is pretty much the same. The drums may be a bit different and the vibe they've been putting out is a bit more airy and uplifting than their previous stuff. I thought it wouldn't be the same neither when Portnoy left, but after listening to albums like A Dramatic Turn of Events and The Self Titled Album, DT haven't missed a step in the slightest. The only thing I've noticed is that the dark moody heaviness isn't there as much. That was a Portnoy thing, because he was always partial to the heavier stuff. Also, one of my favorite songs ever written by DT, Illumination Theory, was written with Mangini on drums.

Living in. The studio for a year and LTE3 is still. Bigger let down than. Transatlantic. Let’s not even talk about distance over time. This next album better be good otherwise I’m done with dream theater. I didn’t think one album (DOT) could spoil my entire love for one band. The album is SOOO bad it’s obvious it was made and produced to please the fans who didn’t enjoy The Astonishing. What a load of garbage. Never have one band taken such a drop in standards.
