- I have gone through so many casting tutorials after watching so many people still struggle with the cast. There has to be another approach. could this be it. I hope it helps.
I've been fly fishing for 12 years. This video has opened my eyes and brought home to me the benefit of the WF lines. Thank you, thank you for this video and advice. You have truly given me the way forward for my fishing.

This is crazy. Talking about lines. During the later part of this fishing week my Match Catch Avid started to play up. Casting has become very difficult. It seems to be as if the outer coating has become worn, and more abrasive. Making casting very difficult. I cleaned this line before going. Not sure if its muck. But will find out tomorrow, as we are not to long back. But what I think I will be doing is ordering my self a Barrio. I think the Barrio could be well suited to the fast action rods for a few reasons. But most of all. The line has a bit of stretch. This will enable me to go down on tippet size, as the stretch acts as a buffer. Great meeting you Phillip . Take care mate. Shaun.

At this moment in time both Wessex Water reservoir’s are closed, they closed the season early due to the water levels. That’s Hawkridge and Clatworthy.
Wimbleball trout lake is so low on water that they have stopped all bank fishing due to safety measures, so you can only fish from a boat.
If I was you, I would be inclined to leave a visit this way until the water levels improve, if you are looking to fish these waters.
But we have exe valley trout lakes that are still operating, as far as I know, so is bulldog trout fishery in Barnstable. I haven’t fished exe valley for a few years now, and I haven’t fished bulldog trout fishery at all, so will have to give it a go next season. Hope this helps Shaun.

I am trying to find areas of fly fishing that every body seems to leave out. At times I can see how important these small things can be. Such as a better understanding of a line. All casting videos show casting. But the line you have is important and the rod. So I am hoping people look at there line and understand what they have. It is useful to know when best to shoot that line. It could be 20' or 40'. Thanks for the comment DAB. And I am glad that this video has some use. Take care mate. Shaun.
Hi Shaun, the double haul is mostly thought of as a ‘distance technique’, however, it works by directly increasing line speed which is advantageous to distance, but is also useful for distributing your input into the cast, which will reduce overall fatigue and give you more control. Regarding the line, the goal is to move the head as straight as possible towards and away from the target, which means keeping the head at the top of the loop during rod counterflex (if it’s a WF). To do this, we need to include some overhang (running line). To find the sweet spot, locate the end of the head, measure your haul length and add 3’ onto this, maybe 2’ extra to dial in your release timing. That’s how much you need out the tip and the line will fly. Hope that helps 🙂
Really well put and spot on. However maybe a bit to much for a lot of people out there. I would love to see them improve the basic cast. And for a lot of viewers are of the maturer side of life. I did try to explain and give idea as to how to work out the haul length. Its great to hear from you and your massive experience of distance casting. Thanks so much. Really finding all your videos super helpful Shaun, none so more than this one. In my teens I fished on my local reservoir, progressed to an ok..ish level of casting with very cheap lines, rods, etc. It was all I could afford on my part time jobs wages. I tried heavier weight forwards and even a cheap shooting head at one point. It all helped, but then stopped fishing. We’ve already chatted on here about my return 30 years later. My first outing was last Sunday at Ynys y fro using a cheap setup I’d bought from Garry Evans the week before. Took myself to a corner of lake away from other anglers and tried casting again after 3 decades away! It was very frustrating! Tried different leader and tippet lengths, switched from floater to slow intermediate (translucent Airflo - not sure if I like the translucent tbh?), got in tangles etc, had a few tantrums, then calmed down. Then started remembering what I’d learned from your videos about water columns, leader lengths etc etc, then bang! 15 mins later, I landed two rainbows landed with 5 mins of each other! 3.4lbs & 2.1lbs. It was back! That feeling! The take, the play, the landing! Why had I left it that long?!! All this week I’m desperate to get back out there! But not with dark evenings! Anyway, like I say your videos are the most helpful I’ve come across on TH-cam! No promotions, no images of brands, etc etc unlike so many others! I’m going to watch this video another couple of times, as it highlights no matter how good or expensive your tackle is, if it’s not setup correctly, balanced, etc you’re on a hiding to nothing! @@shaunfishes101 oh, I’ll always have plenty of questions to ask! Doh! Lol. So, I’m starting to build up tackle and accessories again and I’ve reached the stage of clothing, luggage etc. Main priority is to be minimalist as possible and travel lightly! I see so many anglers laden down with gear - looks tiring and ridiculous to me? Years ago I had a traditional vest and bag, and carried the landing net separately…oh course that’s all since gone. I’m at a crossroads which way to go now? Basically I trying to decide to get a fly vest and perhaps just a small
hiking rucksack to throw some snacks, bits and bobs into? Or just get an over the shoulder bag (Snowbee, Wychwood or similar) or try out an over the shoulder sling bag which seem popular these days?
I’ll only carry a few fly boxes, some tippet, priest, forceps, silicone and mud basically, oh and a spare fly line. I’ll need someway of attaching zingers with snips etc on. How do you hang your net over your back? Do those Airflo puffa jackets and rain coats you wear have D rings on them to attach net lanyards? Thanks John. Understanding the lines is a key factor. We have had so many people on the water with us that are using the wrong lines for them. It surprises me for all the casting videos out there they all tend to forget about the line, which is important to understand in casting. I think most people understand rod position during the cast. Hell we have been told about it since fly fishing started. But if people get this I am sure they will enjoy the casting as much as we do. And most of all, it will become effortless. “Too many people are struggling” i think is the first time i hear anyone saying about fly fishing… apart from me. A big like for that!!! I say this because no matter what people say, this is pobably the hardest type of fishing invented by man (i’ve been fly fishing for 4 years now but still struggling with casting against wind with a floating line)
A lot of people do struggle with casting Catalin. The thing is they will not mention that they need help, as they are all so good at casting. 4 years is still very new in fly fishing terms, and casting into the wind requires spot on timing. One thing that will help. Like watching the waves coming in on the beach, there are breaks. The wind is the same. This is when we make our cast. When you are able to get the cast in with two false casts. The rods we use for the windy days are the fast action rods. You can generate the speed in the line so much faster. Keeping the rod at a slightly lower angle does help, as there is less wind as we get nearer the ground. But most of all its the timing, getting the rod to load really well. Honestly David far to many people are pushing the rod to hard. The lines are set up to reduce the amount of back cast. Let the rod do the work. This means slowing up a little and keep it smooth. For most they will get to the point of shooting the line. At this point they suddenly increase the speed. This is no good. Keep the movement consistent. Mess about with different speeds. Every rod and line requires a different speed. But by messing around trying things you will soon get to feel the difference. Yes you are so right about being on the rivers. There is nothing like it. @@shaunfishes101 yeah I'm fishing a silstar carbodynamic 9' # 6-7 with clear intermediate fly lines and I caught a little baby Brooke trout about the size of my finger its colours was beautiful

@@shaunfishes101 yeah I know it's a bit of a big rod and reel for the river it's all I have work's its okay for now the trees are nicely decorated with flies from getting stuck in them and the river is about 11 miles long but it has a few nice big deep wide holes with big fish can't wait for the weather to get better so i can get back out and i know your always getting asked but is there any rod and reel you could recommend i could use for river fishing i would be grateful for any help
@@eyeintheskiesdavid9277 Not as easy as you may think to recommend a rod. I would always try one out before purchase. I can certainly help with what action of rod. Being you are on a smaller river and plenty of cover. I would go with a medium fast action 5# or6#. Don't be confused by getting a fast medium. The difference here is that the fast medium is over the mid point. You will know this as either medium or the word fast will be mentioned first. So fast medium is a bit faster. Medium fast is a bit slower. When it comes to lines I would definitely be on a double taper to match rod. Reels I would always look for machined, not cast. And so long as it has a decent drag, as you could end up with a decent fish on the end. Disc drag is very reliable. Oh the line is a floating line. As you are working the rivers I would suggest getting a few tapered braid leaders. The main ones being Intermediate and slow sink. I use Snowbee. They are loop to loop. So you can switch very quickly on the river bank. Intermediate for most of the river. And slow sink when you get to those deeper pools. As you are newish to this. Not sure if you understand presentation on the river. If water flow is slow you can present your cast more across. As the drag on your line will not be so great. When the flow speeds up you need to present the cast more down stream. As soon as this cast is made always make the first mend. This is done by using the tip of your rod to flick a small amount of the line slightly up and towards the opposite bank. I often mend the line on the still waters to help get some depth when the wind is dragging my line to quickly. I really hope this helps. But there's a lot of self satisfaction when learning. You are right mate, I rarely double haul. The further you cast the harder I is to set the hook, and the more false casts, the more chances to eff it up!
I was going to mention a big cast does not always catch fish. You will spook more fish within casting distance by casting over these fish. 90% of fish caught are within 70'. Yes, that extra amount of line out means harder to get a good hook. Might be up your way this winter some time. Had our first Autumn trip today. Tricky fishing. Will let you know. Take care mate. By far one of the most helpful casting improvement videos on TH-cam, thank you! People have always told me I make too many back casts but when asked why, they could never explain better than saying “it’s wrong”. Today I just so happened to notice I was shooting better distance with 2-3 back casts than more and you’ve just helped me to understand why! A most sincere thanks to you.
Thank you so much. As I have said in the video that there was something missing in most tutorials. Having watched loads myself to correct this. Honestly most were much the same. Constantly going on about the action of the rod and arm, but forgetting one main element. The line. Once understanding the line set up, which each one can be different. Enables us to know when to shoot a line. I love casting as much as fishing. I will spend hours perfecting all casting styles. Well not quite all. Don't do much spey as I am no longer doing rivers. But the most useful casts are your forward cast, back cast and steeple cast. I am so pleased to hear of your improvement. Keep it going, improve and master the cast. Good video mate 👍. Think I am one of those fishing that back cast too much but its hard to stop. You are right too much choice and it's confusing to start with. Back out again today thrashing around 😖 😆. Hooked two, landed one, missed another…striked too quickly👀. So, watched this again tonight as my casting isn’t to the level I’m wanting. Yep, I’m impatient and always wanna run before I can walk! Notice other guys appear to have loads of line in air before shooting, typically after 2-3 forward and back casts? Yet I seem to be taking 4-6 to get any sort of had acceptable distance? Have 38’ head with 9’6” rod so in theory shouldn’t be trying to have more than about 4 rod lengths in air before shooting? Finding it frustrating maté particularly so as I’m a perfectionist 🙄😂
The amount of false casts can vary for every body. As you become more experienced you will require less false casts. Like you may not be generating the same line speed as I do, and more line going out between false casts. It is more important to get as close to the sweet spot for shooting. And as you know every lines sweet spot is different. But I love your eagerness. What might help is to watch Hywel Morgan Fly casting tutorial. He might do your head in a bit. But he knows his stuff. After all he is World Champion Caster. He is another one of the welsh boys. And fishes Garnffrwd, one of our local waters. Actually most of us fish there. Such as Rhys from Rhys Fishes, Gareth Wilson ( UK Fly Fisher) and many others. Any way check it out. And catch up soon. Shaun.

What is he doing that would result in a torn rotator cuff please. Having suffered with shoulder pain I am keen to avoid further injury to it now it has improved via physio and hydrolisation. Thanks in advance.

I was taught to cast by a lovely old gentleman in his 80's.
Whilst not insisting on the old adage of "Imagine you have a Bible tucked under your arm- and you wouldn't want to drop THAT!", he did say "I see a lot of people casting and they're flailing their arms around furiously. I'm always minded to go up to them and say "If it's vigorous excercise you seek, a gymnasium might be more appropriate"."
Gymnasium. Love it. Will have to remember this one when I am out next. There is a few of the boys that are like this on the water. I have mentioned to them. But they don't want to know. These are the same boys you see on there face book saying such things as, the best casting rod, obviously there rod. And how to cast. But they do bring a smile to my face. @@shaunfishes101 I use the 40 + floating, it has a terrible memory but I can cover most of the ponds with it ,it is a wee bit annoying trying to stop it coiling on the shooting head ,any advice cheers .your videos are great for beginners like me
@@JonFisher-ql6xe I did have a Wolf tt line that a memory problem. I boxed it back up. ten months later decided to try something. Put it on a different reel which was bigger, only by about 10mm. Could not believe it. As good as they say it should be. Not saying this will fix yours. I personally will not fish with a line that has memory. Actually I would if I was pulling lures all the time. But fishing the small stuff, No chance. I would rather cast a bit shorter distance. Presentation is more important to me than distance. What rod are you fishing.
@@shaunfishes101 hello n happy New year ,it's airflo 40 + floating line on a airflo delta xp .the reel was part of the greys starter kit kast 9,7 ,8 wieght. It won't fish straight untill the last 13 ft
I having a lot of elbow pain.
Casting flies for pike i started out with a Guideline #9 sink 3 airflow.. A couple of months further i was casting an Orvis Clear water #10 paired with 40 plus sniper fast intermediate.
After a couple of months im sensing a lot of pain while casting in my right elbow.
Then i bought a TFO #8 . ( all the rods are 9ft) was much more enjoyable and less pain..
Im just in my first year of Flyfishing.. but is a lighter rod a way to have less pain or im i doing something wrong?
Casting 20 meters is not a problem.. but very exhausting.
This is all heavy stuff Jason. I think for most of us would get some sort of reaction casting this heavy set up. Another thing to consider, is that you are new to fly casting. You will be working muscles you may never have used in the same way before. There is a lot of line weight out side the rod, which in turn puts a lot of strain on the forearm. If any other rods are to be purchased, Start looking at 6#. You will find this will make a massive difference. Lines will also be important. Shooting heads also create a lot of line weight out side the rod. If you are targeting mainly pike. I will ask Justin as he has done a lot of pike on the fly. We will try to find you a set up that could help. A 6# rod has no problem in dealing with pike. But the flies could be a different matter. We will get back to you. Shaun.
Spoke with Justin. 6# rod no problem. Preferably a faster action. WF line 10' tippet and 6'' wire and up to a 6'' lure. What to look for in a line. Short front tapper. This will present large patterns with ease. Shorter belly, this means you can load rod quickly and make the cast. Less line in the air during back casts. Means less strain on the arm. Hope this helps. Any thing your not sure about just ask. Shaun.

You're right.. my arm elbow and wrist are not used to the movement..and on top of that.. my technique needs a lot more attention.
I'm fishing from the boat on large bodies of water .. and not always but sometimes i get to meet some very big pike 'meter+' ..again.. most days they are a lot smaller
But is a #6 Weight capable enough for the big ones?
My streamers are 15 cm sometimes 18.. not too thick so they are quickly at depth.
I will check out the lighter rod and line setup.
The shooting heads cast with little effort but are heavy.

Hi Shaun was it yourself I saw who hangs lines up in big loops of coat hanger over winter keep the memory out them.
Hi William it could well be. Any line that I may not use for a longer period I will hang. The bigger the loop the better. So long as the point of hanging is not sharp, like keep the diameter as wide as possible. The spools the line comes on is OK. I did show this on the Barrio line video ages ago.
Oh forgot to mention, if a line has very bad memory, this is not a cure. It can help. Its more to prevent memory.
@@shaunfishes101 There the Airflo superflo Shaun I have the 6ft and 12ft fast tips. There good not much memory. Cold weather doesn't help them. A try find the wan on the Barrio lines you done.
@@shaunfishes101not memory related but a useful tip if your fly line is twisted and liable to tangle between reel and first eye. An old guy told me years ago to grass my line. This involves stripping all your fly line and some of the backing outside of the rod tip or just off the reel if it is off the rod then walk for say 100 yards through grass dragging the line behind you. It works a treat and takes all the twists out.
@@davidbenjamin5356 Actually I should cover this one, as so many people fish the bung. Yes you are spot on with this. Line twist is more common than ever. Its the drag coming through the water and air with anything that is not so stream lined. Some say it can be the cast, or even with certain lines. But as you say its a simple fix. And funny enough I had to do this myself only last week. I will have to mention this sometime on a video. To you and me this is simple. If you hear a rod whistling - the energy of both, the rod and the angler, was wasted.
It is very rare not to hear a rod cutting through the air during a cast. For years I used to wonder why my rod never made this noise when every body I watched or fished with did. It was only when I had a stand alone camera set back that I could hear it. This same noise rarely comes through on the gopro. One way that the noise may be reduced is with a short soft cast. I have checked several professional casting videos. It is still there. So I am not totally convinced by what you claim. Sorry. Shaun.

Ye, its like the Pembrokeshire Triangle. Roz who owns the water, lives across the field. There the wind is never as bad. We get used to it, and the fish love it.
