basically recreated the song by ear, from scratch, using a SM64 soundfont i found somewhere. then just rearranged the chords & melody to flip it from major to minor, which you can start doing by changing chords to the parallel minor equivalent - e.g. a I chord (C major) becomes a i (C minor), a vi chord (A minor) becomes a bVI (Ab major) while also rearranging the melody as you go to play nicely with the new chords. (these are not the chords in this track; just giving an example) this is generally only the first step as if you just do this directly, and don't take any creative liberties, it'll probably sounds pretty bad in a lot of spots lol, so you need to kind of treat it as an original composition while using this approach as a framework
@@fatherp Did you begin your journey into composing music starting out by playing by ear? I have played music for several years, and I play by ear mostly. I really love how you just openly shared your thinking process like that. @@StillBillyD92 yeah mostly by ear! I took guitar lessons for about a year, which was a very helpful foundation, but it didn’t cover theory, notation, or anything like that. just how to play guitar. then the rest was self taught and picking things up by ear. I did take a couple of harmony courses in college which was helpful, but mostly in understanding how to label stuff and articulate musical concepts. I do think learning some proper music theory is extremely helpful, but understand that it’s not attractive to everyone. and yeah im always happy to share my process etc with folks who ask! sometimes if people ask for full chord breakdowns etc I won’t be able to, since its a lot of work and I often don’t remember exactly how I wrote something. but it’s never because im trying to hide my “secrets” or anything lol
another way to easily do it is by grabbing the midi, throwing it on finale notepad, and change the key and just individually put in the instruments if it doesnt do it automatically

yea for real, the liberty taken here to reinterpret, compared to most minor key edits just doing simple 1-for-1 noteswaps, is sick as hell

Instead of sad, it sounds like a 70s-80s jazz-styled villain song
Wow I just commented this same thing, then scrolled down and you beat me to it.
This sounds like the theme of a group of Bob Omb gangsters in a Paper Mario game.
