- I'm quite late again, but it's better than not uploading at all. The slides in SM64 took some time to deconstruct and reconstruct.

this has made me realise the slight delay some instruments have, like they're imperfectly in time with the rhythm and that makes Slider sound so much more organic and lively, as if it were being played by actual people rather than midi soundfonts. it's neat
It's a smart way to take advantage of what limits that were there. I also find it very smart as well.
It's likely it WAS played by hand with a midi board

I love the fact that the whistle is vaguely detuned. It really gives this song the psychedelic panic present in the actual game for this section

I just recently got into these types of videos and have been loving getting to hear many beloved songs unfold and come back together at the end being able to hear every instrument. Its like reliving hearing the songs for the first time but in a new light.
That's how I first felt when I discovered Oscilloscopes. It felt like I was stepping into a whole new line of genre of videos.

i love seeing videos like this because it makes me appreciate just how tight the composition was in SM64. given the limitations of the time, everything still sounds really nice on its own, but still meshes beautifully into the final song. you can recognize every individual element on its own as slider, but you still don't really GET slider until they all come together, which is incredible to me
Couldn't agree more on that statement. Nintendo was the one to not dissappoint, espically when it came to their music.
The satisfaction of playing through the song on your head during bits without the main melody and getting the timing exactly right

I was giving this song an actual good isolated listen with headphones for the first time, when I suddenly noticed there was a sick ass piano undertone on the offbeats at 5:03 that I had never heard before. It became my new favorite instrument in the song to kinda latch my brain onto while listening, and I came to this video in hopes to hear it isolated. This is everything I dreamed of and more. Thank you!!!

You know, I got a tin whistle and thought this song would be fun to cover-though I doubted I could find the backing track without any whistling. There's some assembly required, but I guess this works out!

Channel 5's solo is mind nourishment. I love how every instrument overlaps and how that solo brings the song to a full circle. Sublime, subtle; yet extremely fun and playful.

I have every part memorized on their own because a while back I remade this song with noteblocks in Minecraft (not very well because the timing was off lol) so it's very interesting finally hearing it separately and not me just doing all the work in my brain lol. This is super cool! I always try to whistle along to the song but the last part it’s a little to high for my register. Like others have said, the jazzy piano is super nice and I wish it was easier to hear in the full song.
Yeah, everytime I try to whistle to the high part, I drop down an octave so I don't get light headed. The piano really should've been a bit louder. I honestly didn't know that it had piano originally until I played the game again and heard it.

Very good job, but it's missing a channel, the piano notes were supposed to have higher pitched ones in the stops, and those happen in a separate channel
I love Channel 4 (I don't know what instrument it is) in this music. This is why I prefer the In-Game version over the OST Version.
Did you enhanced the sound in anyways? Because I swear that piano is beraly hearable in the original one. This is pretty cool

Thanks! I use a soundfont that uses the game’s instruments, and I rip the sequences from the game using N64 Midi Tool. Though I heard VGMTrans could work.

I have been corrupting mario 64 enough to have made this myself and know it still really awesome, im also right now doing what i call “instruments swap” where i don’t fuck the music, just get the instrumental set changed randomly on all songs

it's probably a synthetic whistle. due to the N64 using midi files, a note can be stretched very long, so unless they looped the sample of (whoever) whistling at a specific section, it's more likely they just went with a synthetic whistle sound.

@@chrisdbest1516 I mean, all of these instruments are probably recordings from a keyboard with samples (Yamaha, Roland, etc), played with midi. An oscilloscope isn't an audio chip or anything, it's just a way of visualizing the sound.
