Thanks very much for your inspiration Daniel. Having followed you for some time I plucked up the courage to put your advice to use and reset one of my front lawns. Ten tonnes of topsoil later and an underestimated amount of work later I now have a beautiful rye grass lawn. I used Barenbrug extreme which I bought from your site. The seedlings were up in 14 days and took the fleece off. I mowed every day and I am chuffed. Not bad given the conditions we face way up north in Orkney. Enjoy your break Dan ThanQ

Only got into lawncare since I started watching your videos about 8mths ago, as I was so impressed with the lawns you do, I decided it is time to get my own lawns looking beautiful. I have been working on my back lawn all day today, and certainly feeling the aches and pains now. I have a manual cheap push along scarifier on wheels, that I push and pull using the long handle, hard work, would be so much easier with a petrol or electric one, but funny thing you mentioning yarrow, I found out today my back lawn is covered with it, it really is invasive, some of the roots are so deep, and then the rhizones spread right across my lawn. Started digging some of the deep roots up in places from the yarrow, but found some go down as deep as about 8". I plan on reseeding my back and front lawns, but worried now that when I do, this yarrow is going to come back, as there is no way I can get every root up. I sprayed the whole lawn with strong glyphosate concentrate also about a month ago (360g/l), it made the leaves of the yarrow go a little paler, but has done nothing to the deep roots. I honestly think this yarrow in lawns is a nightmare, my own fault for neglect over the years of just mowing it, and not acting back then to try and control it, and stop it spreading, so I would advise anyone that gets yarrow in their lawns, act quickly to get rid of it, if you dont, it will spread like crazy and be a nightmare to then try and dig up due to the length and depth of the roots😥

@@brub5174 yeah most are 76g/l, but for really tough weeds, products like Gallup etc do a 360g/l glyphosate, turns out it does not barely touch yarrow, a killer containing 2.4-D is needed for yarrow.

Hi Murfy, if you’re going to edge your lawn with bricks or slabs etc, then measure the distance from the edge of your mower cutting blade (if it’s rotary mower turn the blade so its tip is nearest the edge of the mower) to the outside edge of your mower wheels. That measurement is the minimum gap width you’ll need. You could of course add an extra inch to your measurements if you wish.

In response to your reply I certainly did not mean to offend you in the slightest. In 1988 I suffered a severe beating where both offenders were arrested for attempted murder. I thought I had put this all behind me until recently when I had what I would call a minor nervous breakdown which sadly led to other things. I was recently diagnosed with Complex PTSD as a result of the assault and this includes all manner of issues one of them being severe depression and in my case very poor memory retention. I love gardening and especially the care of lawns which you would not think if you looked at mine. It cheers me up and helps me relax, so when I get a reply like that you can imagine how much it sets me back. I have watched all your videos from start to finish and loved them all up till now, yours being my favourite channel. So again apologies for upsetting you and i will never bother you again.

You have to hand it to this chap. He is meticilous in his approach & carrying out of his duties. He is the only one worth watching tbh. Just about all the others are copying each other & ending up with bare patches in newly seeded lawns. Burying the seed in compost is the main reason for it, but, what do they know.
Just some compost, fertilizer then seed. Do not cover the seed with compost & rake in. Grass seed needs light to germinate properly. How do i know?. I have created & tended so many, many lawns over the years.

    • @williamdavies3295

Grass seeds aren't strong enough to punch through much soil. They’re meant to be placed on top of loose, prepared soil. Germination can quickly suffer from too much soil on top of them. Don't worry about the birds eating some of it, they won't eat enough to make a difference. Grass grows just fine in the wild where no one is burying it or protecting it from birds.
It's OK to use a seeding mulch to help hold moisture if you want to. That doesn’t count as burying the seed. Seeding mulch is usually made of paper pulp, coco fiber or peat moss
I wondered how long it would take for dan to start getting arrogant. There is room enough for different views relating to lawn care. For decades the seed producers have advocated not burying the grass seed. They ought to know their own product. Having done it for 20 yuurs or whatever counts for nothing. I have never grown seed in the dark, what for.

Why when you plant a sunflower you get a dibber create a hole and put the seed in the hole abs cover it with compost?????? See why i think your talking crap, some of the seed will grow if you just put it down on top but results are far better if you cover . This discussion is closed!
