- In todays video we push the boundaries and push back against the almost 97% of people who think it is too late in the year to be doing over seeding and top dressing and prove you all wrong. Almost ten years ago to the day I originally seeded this lawn from scratch and 3 months later it was fantastic, so I believe on this job we will have enough time to make it come good. September is a great time to seed as we have a lot of moisture around and the soil temperatures are at their most ambient. Join me over the coming months as we try to achieve the goal I have set myself to get this lawn looking great for Christmas. Also in todays video we start a new segment which is a weed identification chapter.

Big thanks Dan. Your lawn wisdom shines through! Am sat looking out the window at the 500m2 lawn that I care for as a live in gardener. It is looking fab and is now my gardening calling card to impress my bosses and is buying me much goodwill. 2022 it got hammered by drought and my total lack of lawn skills. After obsessive watching of your videos I learnt the 'Way of the Lawn'. I reseeded the worst of it on 26th October 2022 and by 9th Nov the new seed was growing well. Living in deepest arid Suffolk I'm trying to make the most of the autumn damp. Am planning a scarify, reseed and topdress in a couple of weeks time. May the force be with me!

great video, i had a really bad case of leatherjackets in my lawn, 10 by 4 meters was destroyed.
2 weeks ago they starting coming out of the cocoon at night so i had my revenge, neighbours thought i was going mad running around with a flyswatter and a flashlight.
Try covering the lawn overnight with a black tarpaulin. When you lift it in the morning, they should all be on the surface, ready for you to deal with.
Overseeded mine last week, though now you tell me not to if you have mature trees over it - oops.
I have a 40 foot high Sycamore on one side and a similar sized Lime tree on the other, both overgrown thanks to my neighbours who own them.
I seem to have far more worm activity since I applied lots of ' product' over the year, though my lawn has never looked better.
I was really enjoying the video up until the point where you mentioned football.
Newcastle's biggest win since 1999 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 8.0.
Though Bolton beat us 13.0 in an 1890 cup match.
I prefer an overseed reno in Sept...apart from the excess of leaves. Then hit the ground running in spring

@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert something else you might like to know is that Great Plantain has medicinal properties, specifically, antihistamine, antifungal, antioxidant, analgesic effects and also a mild antibiotic. It is effective against stings and better than Dock. If people are taking Warfarin blood thinners, then they need to be careful as Great Plantain has a lot of vitamin k in the leaf and can affect those on this drug. Not a weed really. More of a natural medicine cabinet. 😃

Just my point, If you are eating a mars bar or drinking a coke you are pretty much eating sugar but they've disguised it. Would you prefer to eat 8 teaspoons of sugar or a mars.Look at the power sugar companies have. The US annexed Hawaii all because of sugar. Watched your videos for a couple of seasons now and have a much better lawn because of them which is great thank you. I remember on one of your videos maybe last year you mentioned not to use a compost this late in the year because the temperatures are not up and the compost doesn’t break down as well. You were using jacks magic still at the time. I haven’t top dressed with compost this late in the season for that reason. With this No 4 being a finer compost is it less likely to need to worry about it not breaking down. Gonna be interesting to see how it goes and maybe I’ll give compost this late a try next year.
No its still got the weight behind it when wet and its the bacteria not being as active breaking it down i think is the reason as well that the grass doesn’t break through also
I done a full renovation on the lawn yesterday scalped, scarified, seeded and top dressed, just need Mother Nature to help with the watering and hopefully the temps stay in the high teens
Perfect temps similar to early may at the moment with far more moisture

Hi Dan, another great video. I really like your philosophy. Use your hands to work, no pre seed fertilizer when overseeding, regular scarifying etc. Many YT tell you something different, using so many machines for thousands of Euros each. Nice to watch but away from a regular lawn lovers life 😊 As always this Lawn will come back for sure.
At this point: what happened to the Circle Job. Haven't seen that for such a long time.
Dog wee’d all over it so we said lets leave it for this year, looks ok now as it died earlier in august so , its recovered well but will be digging it up next year as the weed grasses have taken over because of the dog wee
This lawn was always my favourite (perhaps as it had those superb quad stripes). Good to see it back in the video list again . Any chance of a peek at the triangular bit you also did at the top of the garden (the bit that's probably owned by the council)

Another top video. You seem to always use the 40l bags of field compost number 4, would you consider using the Jumbo Bags that are available as there seems to be a large cost saving if you did??
Nar as dont really wanna be going on the lawn with a wheel barrow at this time of year plus if you have left overs how do you transport it to next job?

My question is regarding which type of seed to use. My kids love playing football, so which would be best to use for hard wearing and looking as decent as it can, please?

Thanks for the video Dan. I am in Canada and following your tips as close as I can with the products we have here. Thanks for all those! I did scarifying, verticutting and aeration before laying a mix of sand and compost and then seeds (Barenbroug RPR). I added right after humic acid and a wetting agent. Three days I added a starter fertilizer. Watching you video made me think I should've waited more. I added it because even the existing grass was a bit beaten. Thoughts?
Well its too late now you cant unfeed the lawn so just see how you get on

Wait a minute, so i can actually spread the compost like that? 😮 i alwas thought to sprinkle the conpost over the seeds and leave ot be because the seeds would move around. I will try this technique!

That's a shame, last time you showed that lawn it looked fantastic. It takes a Pro with knowledge and a lot of work to get it in top shape. Home owners think it's easy, but it's far from it.

Hi Dan. Loving your videos and learning new things on every one. Scarified and over-seeded a lawn 2 weeks ago. It’s come up a treat. Ordered some autumn feed to apply in a week or two but I’ve received one with calcium & magnesium. Will this affect new and existing grass as we’re in a limestone area and not sure it’s necessary? Also what’s the background music in your vids?
Cant comment on other feeds as sell my own but can tell you the background music is blue mountains by gabriel witcher

Put some weedkiller and dans winter magic on and its ok, no moss so deffo did a great job last year
I'm trying to work out how many bags of Field Compost no 4 to buy, but can't find the approximate square foot per 40L bag. Any ideas? EDIT - 1 Bag = 9-10 sqm (I re-watched the video and paid full attention this time! :D )
P.S. Love the videos - and I was considering over seeding this Autumn but you have a very valid point about overhanging trees! So I'm going to wait until March now
If lawn scalped then yes 9-10 but on this bag it was about 6 due to the length of the grass
My lawn has lots of brown patches due to our dogs urinating on the lawn. What can I do to get rid of the patches and also develop a lawn that will cope better with the dogs urine?
Take them out for a walk instead of letting them on the lawn because you cant be bothered, if your letting the dogs wee on the lawn then you in all honesty dont care about it so why should i?
Genuinely surprised and shocked by your negative and somewhat judgemental reply! You don't know me or my circumstances, yet happy to judge me. If I didn't care about my lawn why on earth would I (clearly) waste my time watching your video or posting a question!!! For your information, my dogs get a minimum of two long walks a day, a mixture of local trails and beaches near my home. My garden isn't some "Show garden" it's a working family garden, to be enjoyed by myself, partner, our children, grandchildren, friends, our dogs, friends dogs, neighbourhood cats and fox, hedgehogs, birds etc. There are no "Keep off the grass" or "No ball games" signs in my garden! I had hoped for some sensible practical advice that would help me maintain at the very least a nice garden and fairly green (natural) lawn, but I was sadly mistaken. Hi dan i had last week cut dethatche with an electric rake.. then spiked with a 9-5-10 feed i think.. and some galectic of yours on. Should i of overseeded looks like i need to repeat the process only overseed also? Just nit sure should i let the fert etc kick in for now? New to all this but im trying 😂
If you had a full lawn then no need to over seed, this needed it as was threadbare

I have recently overseeded but i was on a quandry regarding preseed fertilizer. I needed to apply autumn fertilizer on the existing lawn. The preseed is much lower in nitrogen but higher in root boosting nutrients. Therefore I did use preseed which at least was something to feed the existing grass whilst being a boost to the developing seeds.
Is this a reasonable argument for using it?
Not for me as it still 6% nitrogen same as autumn punch and ive had good growth on steves job when i did the video 2 weeks ago

I have two weeks ago at the problem places (little light) again reseeded with dressing. But again nothing seems to develop. I had aerified and worked in with sand. 2 times daily is watered. The spots look wet ...
On a tip then also fertilized with starter fertilizer over it. This has hardly developed in these places, in denser in the sun very very well.
Do you have any tips or this year fingers away?
Used extra also shade lawn.

After raking up everything post scarification do you blow off the lawn the rest of grass/soil that rake couldn't pick up?
I did do the leaves on this but i did a great job of raking it up
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert OK thanks. Some of my customers never ever looked after grass when I scarify, it comes out with a lot of soil, dead grass and debris all together. It's really heavy in the end.
Hi Daniel, so my bluebird machine with the delta blades does the same thing your machine does in this video. Once I do that can I go straight to seeding and then add some earth or peat moss ?

When spreading the topdressing, are you not ever worried about moving the seed? I always tend to move to the seed around & expose it when raking the top dressing

Hi Dan I had to put weed and feed on my lawn 2 weeks ago would it be too late to overseed in 2 weeks time?
Umpires call mate I’m not saying either way, the later you start the less temps your gunna get if you used a feed and weed then they take 3 months to exit so new seed may perish
I still have a few bags of the original Jacks Magic, is it ok without upsetting people to use it ?, I also purchased some 70/30 sand/soil to fill in some uneven areas, should I hold off until next summer or if a dry few days come along lay a thin layer down ? Autumn Punch ? many questions as usual 😀
Use whatever you want, prob hold off on the sand unless grounds very dry, autumn punch always out next week
Just moved into new house that had dogs. Is lawn repairable with lots of wee patches or new turf do you think
Depends how bad and how long the grass is, the crown is determined by how long it gets so if its like a foot long you will have a big crown meaning it will always be massive and will be clumpy in the areas
You mentioned an area that was wet and not so great drainage round the corner, did you avoid that withe the scarifier/seed/compost for fear of making a mushy mess? I'm begging to think the soil bed I used was too sandy and lacking in organics and under this rain we've had is consistently soft bordering on slurry when drenched, will compost make that better or worse?

Wont impact the germination really but will affect the growth of the grass, if its really shady wait till spring

When will you feed and give it first cut at this time of year, in terms of days after seeding ?. I seeded 8 days ago and then used grace stellar sow pro and galactic yesterday, a very high rotary mow, was that too soon ?. What do I do about crane flys laying eggs now ?😂🎉🎉🎉

Small question, I hope you don’t mind. I over-seeded my rear lawn as it was looking sparse and bare in some areas as I’d killed off some rogue farm field grass. I did this on the 17th without realising the huge stormy week we would have, so it pooled quite a lot in areas as it drains slowly. My lawn is relatively flat too, so I don’t think the seed has washed away, I can’t actually see any of the seeds now, I think they have soaked under the soil. Anyway, if the seed hasn’t washed away, is there a chance that it has rotted and will not grow? I do not see any growth yet, so I’m tempted to chuck some more seed down before it’s too late!!
