Started playing 2 months ago. Looked at several “starter sets” online and in person. Ended up buying a used set of Strata’s and was pretty happy with the set as a whole. Definitely a good enough set to learn the fundamentals of the game before I move up to a new set.
My dad is a great golfer. You could give him the most ancient beat up thrift store clubs, and he could beat most people at a round. If you are just learning, spend the money on lessons, ranges, and rounds at a quiet course, not clubs. This guy gives great advice.
Anything that gets people out there enjoying the game is good in my book. You can always upgrade later once you get more experience or try out a friend's driver that gives you better distance, or you find a deal on someone selling used clubs because they got a new set. Enjoying the game doesn't have to cost a small fortune especially when you are just starting out.
When you can buy a whole set for the cost of one “good” driver. Yes, it’s absolutely worth it. Most people just need something that they can go out and have fun with. Very few people need tour level power, speed, and accuracy. If you can get a low handicap with a cheap set, you’re also a better golfer than somebody who achieves the same thing with an expensive set.
The Callaway Strata Ultimate set at $599 is a fantastic value. 11 clubs, 4 covers and a bag. And I can even get a purple set for my wife, because you know color comes before anything else.
Bought a set of +1 Tour Edge Bazooka 370's for around $530. At 6'4, getting +1 clubs after breaking my back on standards 20 years ago made a world of difference.
Finally! Thankyoufor your video! Looked at many many videos finally got answers! I'm 60 beginner female, thank you sooooo much for all this information, fantastic 👍
As a beginner myself, I have to say that buying a cheap macgregor set was one of the best decisions I took. Sure I won´t use them forever, but they are the perfect tools for learning the game and slowly replacing them as you improve.
the cheapest starter set i found was 249 bucks i know thats cheap in the golfing world but thats a chunk out of a guys pay day , but until you get better or you play till your convinced that golf just isnt my game, that way you keep your sanity
@@jamesm.3967 no im ok i play 3 days a week, i was talking about how you hear they want more people playing the game , and im all for people learning and playing, but for some people its hard to get started with the cost of a set of good clubs ,

I used to play golf in high school. Havent played since. Went to the drivijg range with my buddies last week and made me fall back in love with the game. So i bought a box set and a used but taken care of Cobra FlyX driver. All cheap but i love the feel of them.
Great video. I started with the strata and have been slowly upgrading. But not even a year into owning the set I broke the 3 wood and banged up the driver. I’d be really upset if I had spent $3k on a set and did that and probably would of quit. Also I find that one brand doesn’t always suit my liking. So I mix and match what I like.
Thank you so much for your video. I was so confused and stressed out to look for starter set. I did research and read Strata is one of the best starter set. So, I bought a complete set! It makes sense not spending tons of money for a fancy expensive golf clubs while I am learning to play! Thank you again for your video!
When you’re a beginner, you could go one of three ways: your new hobby could fizzle out, you might be an occasional player and you might be a fanatic. In the small chance you become a fanatic, you can always upgrade.
This is the advice I give myself anytime I start a new hobby. Buy cheap or used. Can’t count how much money I wasted in my younger years buying the most expensive equipment, only to use it for 2 weeks and never touch it again.
I like the idea that STIX and Robin golf have. Half a set with head covers and bag and putter. And they are a set you can grow with. These are also the clubs you mostly use any way. I have a full set I play at home and a travel half set from Robin Golf. I actually okay better with my half set simply because it’s the clubs I almost always use. The half set is driver, 3wood, hybrid, 5,7,9,pe, Sw putter with leather head covers and bag.
I just watched a video of a pro shooting -1 (for 9 holes) with a $95 set of clubs (new set, not used). That pretty much tells you all you need to know.
Absolutely agree with the final points here, I bought a relatively cheap set, Macgregor DCT 2000, starting off your going to top balls and even hit the ground before the ball! I broke my 3 wood this way. Definitely worth using a cheaper or starter set when learning the game, the clubs work and when you mess up and damage one its not a big of a deal, downside is replacing that one club, usually I buy a branded one.
My starter set was a Arnold Palmer set. I miss those clubs because the face of the irons felt like the size of a hand compared to my new set. So much more forgiving!!!!
Finally!! I've been asking these questions (what actually makes these clubs different, given the price - especially the irons) for a few months, and this is best answer I've seen. Thank you. What a clear description. Now, I don't want to put you in an awkward position, but I've heard some club makers (Maltby, Gigagolf) indicate that their stuff is as good as the OEMs, but since they don't charge for advertising or sponsorship, they can offer an iron set for around $150. Reading about the Maltby clubs, it looks like they put a lot of technology into it (silicon cushion, multiple pieces, variable face technology, perimeter weighting, etc.). Do you think someone like Maltby can produce a set of clubs for $150 that approaches the quality of an $800 set?
I have bought numerous component heads over the years and some are definitely better than others. The Maltby heads I have bought have been of a quality comparable to the OEMs. I think it's fair to say that they run a couple cycles behind the OEMs as far as the latest tech but the worthwhile technology seems to make it into their heads within a year or so. I have some of the forged heads (more classic design and tech) and they are beautiful. I think if you are okay not having Callaway, Taylormade, etc stamped on your clubs, you can be just as happy with the Maltby stuff. And it's all a la carte so you can pick whatever shaft and grip you want to build and not pay extra up charges.
@@EFGMC thanks. BTW, I got the Strata 12 piece set 2 years ago for $159!! They have been wonderful, but as I improve, it’s time to upgrade the irons. Got used eBay driver (Razr Fit), 3w (TM Aeroburner), and 3/5 hybrids (TM Rescue) for really cheap. But those clubs are definitely better than the Stratas, so I assume newer irons will perform better. Great channel.
Great video, the same can be said for many things we buy. You can’t get the best of everything. As long as they are solid clubs, which I think most are, go for it. The Lamborghini example is perfect. A $3,000 set would be wasted on me.
Wife and I each got a starter set from our local shop; Tour Edge's. Mine are a little nicer (Bazookas) and had one more hybrid (4). We were out the door each with a complete set of clubs and a glove for $1150 including tax. After doing a lot of Craigslist shopping, I was not going to drive around the entire Puget sound sourcing over-priced, outdated used clubs. So far I am very happy with them, but in a few years once we've progressed, maybe we'll look at some Ping's:)

Picked some cheap balls and tees, but pretty much live off the balls I find looking for mine because see above. Is a good time, fun, and not that expensive. Still looking for a 1 iron though…used to hit my grandfather’s a mile where I wanted. Actual drivers, still cannot correct the distance…
My 1st set of clubs was made up of 3 different branded wedges, a set of ram irons, a 5 wood, 3 wood, and a 7 hybrid. I had to go buy a putter and I played without a driver for a year.

I just started golfing about 2 months ago. Bought a used mixed set for $35, I found a set of basically new strata clubs, pw-driver, including 3 hybrids, but missing the putter and bag for $75. Would it be an upgrade to the early 90s mixed set I currently have?
Agree with everything said. Exception might be someone who has an extremely aggressive club head speed. Example a college level baseball player transitioning into golf. Have you installed extension on a box set?
Can only think of 1 time I extended and installed larger grips on a box set. There are also some box sets that offer a longer plus length sets that I have stumbled across.
I bought my first set of clubs from a yard sell for $10.00. The set I have now costs around $500, which is about as high as I will go. I only play for fun and exercise with a few friends. We don't even keep score.
Really enjoyed your video my friend. Spot on. I started playing when I was 8, and have been out for about the last 10 years now. I'm turning 29 and just getting back into it, and I had a tough time making a decision on which clubs to buy over the weekend. Dick's had a Cobra set for 899, and I almost bought them but it didn't make sense. I decided on the Strata 16 piece tour set for 539 online. There are a few different Strata sets, the tour are the best. I've been looking for a solid review on them and haven't been able to find one. It would be really cool if you could do a review on the tour set. It really seems like a great deal for the money. Awesome video!
I have an inherited set of late 1970’s Ben Hogan Director irons. I’m now getting back into golf in my mid 50’s. Shot 55 for 9 holes the other day. Am I going to benefit from the new tech of a new set of starter clubs, or are these old clubs (which might be higher quality) a better bet for me?
The shorter irons probably won't be much different. The longer clubs will be harder to hit because they are heavier, and don't offer any help getting the ball up in the air. Might want to just pick up a couple hybrids or utility irons to cover the longer distances and start out with the Hogan's until your swing gets grooved.
That is a very good idea. After coming back to golf I got a Starta 12 piece set. Added a 50°, 56°, 4 iron. Replaced the 5 hybrid with a 5iron. After 1 yr I am beginning to reach the limits of my wedges and irons. Replacing them later this year. Driver and 3 wood still strong. Those will stay till they break.
i just started to learn how to swing yesterday from the driving range. the next day i bought a club from the thrift store. do you recommend the thrift store for the beginners?, also what kind of club should i get if im just going to the driving range, and do you thik i should get a set or just a one or two club if im just going to the range?. sorry for many qustions im just really intrested and i wanna get in to playing golf :).
If you're only hitting on the range then 1 or 2 clubs to get started should be fine. Once you get into it a little more, you can look at a starter set of some kind.
I have a set of clubs that I bought 35+ years ago and haven't played in over 25 years, I was recently invited out to play with a vendor and soon found out how out of date and miss sized my clubs are for me. I'm having troubles finding a starter set, first I'm left handed so not a lot of options, second I'm 6'4" and most sets seem a bit short. What do you recommend as a club length? and would it be wise to get a starter set and have them sized for me? Appreciate your input.. David
I just got my wife a strata set. If she hates it or only wants to use them 2 times a year, no problem. If she gets obsessed with it and is out there 3 times a week, fantastic! when she grows out of these we’ll put a real set together for her
I'm fairly novice to the game but was bestowed a set of 8-year old high-end irons (Titleist AP2 714) from my brother. The clubs have stiff shafts and custom lie. Can I learn on these or would it be a mistake to try? I'm thinking forgiving clubs might be better. Thanks!
Assuming the length is okay and they aren't too heavy, you should be good to learn on them. You can easily check the lie angles yourself to see if they are close. th-cam.com/video/BeAIN--vz68/w-d-xo.html
Bottom line question is whether these PLAY significantly different than, say, a $1,000 set? Nothing said here suggested that how they play is any different - just finish, some features, and maybe longevity. Is this correct?
My take is that it depends on what is your limiting factor. If you are a beginner, and your limiting factor is poor technique, then getting an expensive set of irons won't do you much. If you are already an intermediate player, and your limiting factor are the clubs (weight distribution, forgiveness, distance etc.), then perhaps its time to move on from these clubs.
For context, started learning with the Strata set. It's been 1.5 years, and my technique has gotten a lot better (even though not quite consistent), and thinking of upgrading soon. They served me really really well, and I still love the feel of them. (Except the driver and hybrid, those are horrible)
My clubs are 25 years old and were fairly cheap when I got them. I assume new irons would be more forgiving and provide better performance overall? Would you say I would get more distance with new clubs and if so about how much? I was thinking about an upgrade to Callaway Mavriks or the Sim2s.
I would guess that you should see a noticeable difference with clubs that old. Between stronger lofts, hotter faces, and lighter shafts, you should see a pretty good jump in distance once you get used to them. Either of those listed are great clubs.
Regarding Golf Works...do you still recommend getting the clubs you suggested for a starter set? Any updates? Thanks! Great video for me, at 64, getting back into the game after 30 years.
Yes, I think for the price, those Golfworks component heads are really great, especially the irons and wedges which look as good as most of the high end OEM stuff.
@@EFGMC Thank you for your quick reply. I just ordered (before I read this...lol). With a Maxfli Sunday stand bag, Accusite ASP2 putter and shipping...$605! 👍👍👍

Everything went to the max size around 2006 though some had already gotten there. I have a new video on beginner club options coming out later today. Look out for it.
I have a question about the intermediate box sets, your Tour Edge HL4, Cobra F-Max, and RBZ Superlites? Are they any good? The HL4 I know retails for $799.99 and you receive 12 clubs the cobra and RBZ I think you may get either 12 or 13.
I have not tried them all but I think they all just have better finishes with a little more tech included in them. I think they would be a good option for anyone looking for a simple setup that should last as long as you want to keep them.
@@shanejones8884 Probably. Have not tried them but they seem to make clubs with similar materials and basic tech as the big brands but aren't paying tour pros, Golf Digest, TV ads etc.
Question is most the $300 sets all have bad reviews for cracked clubs broken driver shafts, people too rough or bad quality? I hear $800-1000 sets are better
@@RodeoJoe1981 Yes quality isn't probably as good as more expensive clubs. Question is would these same golfers see similar results with more expensive sets. Figure bad golfers are going to put more stress and strain on the clubs thereby increasing the chance of damage. This is why I think these sets are good for beginners b/c they can beat them up as they learn and not ruin a more expensive club instead.
I take my friends unwanted clubs and find old clubs at second hand stores. Until I can really play constantly, I am going to wait on buying high costing clubs.
I have an 18* King Cobra 5 wood from the early 2000's and its my go to club! Smaller head with rails on it so it's easy to hit off the fairway and great in the rough, pretty much versatile anywhere, and no adjustment needed so it's good from the get-go. It hits the ball straight with the perfect amount of loft for distance, and is reliable for solid hits everytime, unlike the occasional bad hit with my newer Cobra 3 wood. Maybe it doesn't carry as far as some newer 5 woods, but its accurate, and I'll take accuracy over a few extra yards anyday. So I disagree with the common myth that you need new clubs every 5 to 6 years, as long as it's in decent condition and the grooves aren't worn out, it's still just as playable.
That is probably fair with most of these sets. The carbon fiber shafts will be of low quality, and there won't be much tech if any in the heads. That being said, for a beginner who is likely to beat those clubs up pretty good as they learn, it's probably what they need. They would be the first thing to upgrade though as someone improves.
What makes no sense is the cost of blades. Except for the grooves, the technology, lofts, lies and one piece construction haven't changed in 70 years, yet are often the most expensive club in any given line up.
Sorry if I accidentally said that in the video. You are correct. Callaway owns the Strata name after they bought Top Flite years back. Sold Top Flite, but kept Strata name.
Callaway did own Top Flite. They sold it to Dicks Sporting Goods about 5 to 8 years ago. Callaway did however keep the Strata brand, which is what they use for their starter sets.

I bought my first set of clubs from a yard sell for $10.00. The set I have now costs around $500, which is about as high as I will go. I only play for fun and exercise with a few friends. We don't even keep score.
I play 1 or 2 rounds of golf a year. I bought a box set from Dick's and love it.
Which one is better.. Strata or a Wilson starter set?
Very honest and helpful. Makes lots of sense. Thank you.
Appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
I love my Infinity set. I only play 2, 3 times a year
Really enjoyed your video my friend.
Thanks. I haven't seen the Strata Tour in person, but people who have bought the regular Strata sets seem to really like them overall.
I wore out a set of stratas. They were ok, but not great.
Even basic modern clubs are significantly better than 1970’s technology.
I’m a get a starter set and as I dive in replace as I go
That is a very good idea.
David
Some starter sets offer a long version though might be hard to find LH. Probably would be more comfortable with 1 inch over.
I just got my wife a strata set. If she hates it or only wants to use them 2 times a year, no problem. If she gets obsessed with it and is out there 3 times a week, fantastic! when she grows out of these we’ll put a real set together for her
Perfect!

Bottom line question is whether these PLAY significantly different than, say, a $1,000 set? Nothing said here suggested that how they play is any different - just finish, some features, and maybe longevity. Is this correct?
Cheaper materials may feel different but will definitely wear out faster than higher end ones.
Does the 5 Hybrid replace the 3,4, and 5 irons? I bought the Top Flight XL Set.
That's the idea
I just purchased my first starter set.
Hi, can someone help me decide between taylormade aeroburner set and Callaway Warbird set
This is a 3 minute vid that took 18 mins….@11:30. Yes is the answer.
Totally agree. Working on getting videos tightened up.
I’d rather listen to a detailed opinion then a quick answer anyway
What about a beginners left handed set? I don't want to break the bank so I will not mind non-adjustable how much will I pay?
You can find many of the starter sets in both RH and LH, given you might have to teach a little more for them.
I’m 6’2” and am worried I’ll build bad habits if I’m playing with a set too small. Is this something I should be concerned about?
It would make sense for you to go get a basic fitting to figure out not only the length but also the grip size and go from there.
What do you think about the Callaway XR complete set
Have not tried them but most sets will be similar just different set makeups.
Just getting back into real golf. Strata or Top Flight XL?
I would look at the 2 sets and see which has a better configuration for you. Some sets have more hybrids or different makeups.
FYI - Golf Works emailed me to call them on my order. Some shafts and all grips are on backorder causing order to be fulfilled early next year.
@@studiodemichel This is unfortunately the case across the industry. Just read Taylormade pushing back orders from Aug until 2022. Shafts and grips are tough to come by right now.
Is there a real difference between the women sets and men sets? Or do we just adjust the shaft to the length?
Length, weight in some cases, set make up can be different, and driver loft is usually higher with the women's sets.
Great Advise, Keep it up, looking forward to many more of your videos.
Thanks for the support!
Awesome video. This video is all I needed to see! I’m getting a beginner set!
Thanks for watching. Glad it helped you make up your mind.
Nice video ..what do i do then .i am a beginner so what do you recommend.i dont want to get laugh at either i can afford uo to 500.can you help me ?
Might want to watch this video also as I cover exactly a $500 budget and give one more option that I am a big fan of.

🙏🏽 Thank you! Grateful
Great vid! Played many years ago & wanna get back into it. I used to use a John Daly Killer Whale driver & loved it (at 265cc or something). When did drivers become 460cc? That sounds like the size of a watermelon!
Everything went to the max size around 2006 though some had already gotten there. I have a new video on beginner club options coming out later today. Look out for it.
Thanks for sharing 😊
4:45 finally makes a point.
Great Video..Thanks!
So you’d include your Robin’s and Stix in with the intermediate in your opinion?
Callaway to embarrassed to put their name on box clubs etc ?
I take my friends unwanted clubs and find old clubs at second hand stores. Until I can really play constantly, I am going to wait on buying high costing clubs.
I like that idea. Not to mention there are plenty of great performing old clubs to be found.
@@kevinvassago I think any club you have a lot of confidence in, stays in the bag!
I agree with you 💯
So should I buy a beginner set or a average used set?
Here is the follow up video that might help.
th-cam.com/video/g1bVTC8IK_U/w-d-xo.html
excellent video
For me buy use golf culb get good golf clubs 150 and up to 200
There is no better starter set than a hockey stick and a putter.
Tappa tappa tappa
From what I've seen/heard irons will be passable, but the woods/top end of the bag will be meh.
Isn’t Strata owned by Callaway?
Yes
I started playing golf with a golden bear box set with stiff graphite shafts bought online. Half the shafts broke in 2 years. They are trash.
Doesn't sound good. Can't say I ever saw these clubs. I would stick to clubs why have the backing of a big company.
I believe Strata is made by Callaway.
Correct, think I misspoke in the video at some point.
I learned to drive in a Murcielago
It's not the arrow, it's the archer .
Always true. Golf is 85% player, and 15% equipment. Or close to it!
What makes no sense is the cost of blades. Except for the grooves, the technology, lofts, lies and one piece construction haven't changed in 70 years, yet are often the most expensive club in any given line up.
They figure better golfers will pay more for equipment is my best guess.
Strata is callaway good sir! Titleist makes no such garbage!
Sorry if I accidentally said that in the video. You are correct. Callaway owns the Strata name after they bought Top Flite years back. Sold Top Flite, but kept Strata name.
I almost bought that one. Shoot.
👍👍👍👍👍
Callaway owns top flite
Callaway did own Top Flite. They sold it to Dicks Sporting Goods about 5 to 8 years ago. Callaway did however keep the Strata brand, which is what they use for their starter sets.
