You are the most honest pro on TH-cam by a million miles, im a 1 year old golfer but good on ebay.I have wheeled and dealed my way to having a very forgiving setup , g400max d7 irons cbx wedges 1 and 2, m4 hybrid,odyssey putter, went from over 100 to just under 90 a round.
A opne year that can type as well as play golf ! When I was a kid my father cut my shafts down for me so the clubs fitted, but how short must your shafts be at that age ?!?
Such a great vid, mate. Having “all the gear and no idea” holds true way too often in this sport, esp for hackers. Guilty myself tbh.
A bigger problem in golf is “reverse snobbery”... if people want to spend their hard earned money on their hobby that is their own business. It doesn’t matter their skill level
Great video. Playing the exact irons at the moment. I bought them as a stop gap but I really like them! Your advice holds true for most beginners, BUY PING! great forgiving and hold their value!

I bought that exact set of irons for my build. Golfed frequently when i was 14-17, now i'm back at it at 34 and these irons kick ass.
Such good advice, not just for beginners. I am a mid-handicapper returning to the game after a break, tried lots of clubs from golfbidder and ebay, sold them on again. Settled on Ping i15 irons, Ping Tour W wedges, Taylormade M2 hybrids & woods. I did spend big on a new Odyssey Stroke Lab putter though, which is working well for me.
This video was so helpful for me as I'm starting out. Probably stopped some costly mistakes. Ended up with Taylormade R15 Driver (£72), Cobra F7 4 Wood (£75), Ping G25 3 Hybrid (£40), Ping G10 Irons (£145), Ping 52/56/60 Gorge Wedges (£95), and Odyssey 2 ball putter (£60) - delighted!

Off 5 but still got odd wedges all based on distance, amazed when see others having to think about what their 100 yrd club is!
How old and worn are too old for wedges? Titleist and some other TH-cam’s claim you lose consistency with wedges after 120 rounds. What do you think?
Depends really, that rule doesn't hold the some for vokeys, and especially somethin like a cobra trusty rusty, my dad's got a couple trusty rustys, n he gets the ball spinning like mad and he's played easily 500 rounds with them lol had them at least 7-8 years, couple rounds a week... Still great
I love these videos. They give alot of good advice unlike some other channels pushing the expensive new irons on you.

Last week bought a secondhand spider tour,
The only new club I bought was a 60* ben sayers lob wedge for £25.
After playing a year I finally put 3 cards in last week and got a handicap of 10.2.
You do not need to spend thousands to improve or enjoy golf.
I’m looking at buying those irons from 2nd hand swing. Is that a good website.
Watching this has assured me of my own budget bag, I had a similar philosophy having just started last year that the more important thing was the practice and that getting an expensive new set would only lead me to frustration of falsely feeling like they were supposed to do the work for me.
My bag is built for $500 canadian (about 300 GBP) and in similar fashion the main money went into the irons.

The Cobra Baffler DWS is the best hybrid I've ever used. Like them so much I acquired all six clubs using 3 in the bag.

Here's my 515£ bag, put together during spring 2020:
Driver, Cobra F8, used 70£
5-wood, Cobra F8, used 60£
Hybrid, Titleist 818 H1, used 65£
J4-PW, Maruman Conductor Power Forged, used 130£
3x Vokey SM7, new (on sale) 150£
Putter, Ping Scottsdale, used 40£
Where d’you get the 3 x new vokeys sm7 for £150? I got mine for £240 new but I thought I got them on a bargain back in November
SixL Does Stuff Sorry, got it wrong. They were actually demo clubs from the shop at my GC and not brand new. But they looked brand new, not a scratch.
torlil ah ok. There were some demo SM6’s in my local pro shop a few years ago, £50 a club (they still retailed at £119 back then in the wrapping) and not a single dint on any of them. Guess your situation was similar then...
What's put me off getting Ping second hand is the wide range of colours and lies. Would you go to a pro to get fitted for them then just try to find a set that matches on the second hand market?

Good stuff Simon. Love the tip about proportional cost aligning to proportional usage.
E.g. you will use your irons on pretty much every single hole, so about half or more of all shots is an iron. So half the budget on irons, etc.
Putter is tricky, though. Say you are shooting beginner numbers (95-110), you'll be three-putting a lot, but you'll also be scrambling a lot, because you'll miss greens. Say average 36-45 puts, which is around a third of your shots, but that shouldn't mean a third of your budget...

Cobra AirX package set is very nice. I only got the orange of the Cobra AirX and I sure do love them I wish they had the money to buy the whole set
58 degree wedge for a beginner ? A 56 wedge is far easier to hit. Also a 50 or 52 wedge instead of a 46. Would suggest a 913 driver over that Benross
This information is gold thank you, ah this is so helpful because yes I am a beginner and I am still learning to stand and how to cut is straight, I see zero point to spent 3k on a bag, because if I can't hit it straight, I am wasting money, learn to golf and then spend the money, and everyone that does 'what's in the bag' videos are pros that have been golfing since they were kids. I am 39 and I just picked up a club.

Great video! I have the same Ping G irons and love them. Forgiving, very easy to hit, great balance and they look excellent. Absolutely no shame in using a hybrid on a tight par 4.
How much did Ping pay you for that perfect set up in the bag , everyone knows that’s how your bag looks when you approach on the first par 5 ?
Good set of clubs, but just the irons alone are above my budget which is why I left golf and haven’t returned. It’s no longer affordable at all
I had built a very similar bag a few years back, basically all Ping. But, for some reason, picked up the $500 Costco Edge set and haven't even opened it yet. You are so right on the short clubs and the putter- most of the game is played there. The funny thing is- there are few sets of wedges out there. Nobody seems to review them or mention them when fauning over the lastest clubs.
Ping G series Irons are awesome, I have them in my bag, I also used to have that Benross driver

I have a similar set G series SFT Driver, 3 Wood, G10 Hybrid because I can’t replace it after owning it for almost 10 years, G irons 5-9, PW and Ping 52° & 56° Rustique Wedes plus and Odyssey Stroke Lab #7.

Maybe a suggestion shy away from the SFT clubs? Try Normal ping drivers as they will help show the flaws in your swing and help you stop right shots (guessing from the draw-bias driver)? :)
Forgot to mention - got all of this plus a floor model ping Hoofer bag for $550 US.

3 different holes don’t make on in 2
So I basically stole clubs,... No hear me out lol so firstly I got a 46 degree and 54 degree vokey wedge, and a ping pal putter for a tenner for all 3 in a charity shop, then I got a 2007 big bertha 454 looks almost new, off gumtree for 55 pound, Taylor made RBZ woods 3&5 off fb marketplace 100(needed re gripped, but i had a couple spare golf pride grips and my mate put them on for me) them both together, and cobra ssi irons 4-9 for 150 off gumtree so total comes to 315.... So yeah like I said, I stole golf clubs
From gumtree I got a set of mizuno Mx-900 irons 3-PW 2 wedges mizuno mpt series 53 and 58 wedges and a ping g10 3wood for £60

If you spend 30 min on ebay a day for a few weeks you can find some nice used deals. Picked up golf last year, heres the bag.

Best advice I got:
You're a beginner. You're gonna spend more time in the rough and trees than you'd like. Buy yourself a rescue club. 2 hybrid, 3 hybrid, whatever. Doesn't really matter if it's 17° or 23° but get one.
I just started golf in December andbought the cobra airx set and bought a used taylormade stealth plus for $250.
Love this video. I followed your advice. DRIVER Nike Sq Square (45 Euros) 3 wood RBZ new (90 Euros) M2 Hybrid (100 Euros) Ping i200 irons 300 Euros, two Cleveland black wedges 100 Euros, old MACGREGOR V FOIL PUTTER 25 Euros... Total 660 Euros and some of it was new.

Question: When is it time to upgrade from that $500 beginner bag to whatever comes next? I've been playing 2014 Adams Tech V4 Hybrid irons for 2 years, finally breaking 90 this month, & joined a club. When should I upgrade my irons? I can't afford brand new irons yet, but I could maybe upgrade to something new-er, or I could save up for another 10-12 months and buy new irons next year. (I've replaced my putter, lob wedge, and 5 wood already)
I'd recommend Callaway XRs or XR OS/16
£200-250 for the irons, the woods and hybrids are super easy to come by, maximum £70 for woods (get a 5 wood or a 7 Wood) and hybrids, the driver is about 80-100
Putter get an odyssey white hot or a two ball
Wedges, there are plenty of wedge sets available, pick up and old set and just get them regripped.
It's a pity it's so hard for left handed people with the selection, and the price. LH stuff is premium. I know you have built a bag but the variety is so much less.
Instead I just by cheap clubs like slazenger until I am ready to be fit, which I have been fit for irons and now a putter. 😊 Also bought a brand new TM z spin 52 wedge for 45 euros. Best club in the bag at the moment. Next I will be fit for a driver. Then a hybrid. In the next 9 months when I save up.
I’ve came out $70 up from buying and selling clubs. This is what I have in my bag currently after 3 months.
Driver: Cobra F9. (New)
3 Wood: Callaway Epic Flash Sub-Zero. (New)
Driving Iron: Srixon ZU85.
Irons: Mizuno JPX 900 Combo Set 4-Pw. (4-5 Hot Metal)(6-Pw Forged).
Wedges: Taylormade Hi Toe. (52,56,60).
Putter: Taylormade White Smoke.

I’ve got the 919 tour irons was wondering how the lofts would be for you at the top end do you notice a difference in distance ?
Stewart H my lofts are stronger by about 2-3 degrees, so they go further.

Great video, I just bought used Cobra Forged Tec irons for only $250 already with Recoil ES780....and I love this immediately. Sold my Honmas and have extras to play for golf.....
Good show , Adams golf clubs would good , had them in the bag for a few years, disappointed they bump plus still using my YES putter ( bump as well ) if Nike cannot get a toe in the market who can ??

I have a video recommendation/request. I am currently using a 20 or so years old big Bertha driver from my brother. Looking to get a new driver (It's dented up a bit on top and stuff) but it's hard to find more modern drivers that have a smaller head. (Beside the mini drivers but all the big ones they are still easily 150-300). Could give some recommendations on smaller head drivers that hold up to modern day clubs that are under 100 or even 50. Thanks in advance!!!
Great video, I just bought a new set to get back into the game (Played as a junior 15 yrs ago). Bought a 6-P Iron set for $219aud and a Driver, 5W, Chipper, Sand Wedge and putter at the second hand store 50m down the road for $10 each. I feel I've got a hole in the bag between the 5 wood(20 deg) and the 6i(27 deg) that I should fill with...something, No clue what, Though. Is it as simple as face degrees to fill it or am I making it too simple?
Got fitted 1.5 months ago went callaway rouge driver , seriously cheap now 220 quid with my club discount in my pro shop , was over double that when came out , being fitted sat for irons ( 10 ish handicap) got a grand max but going with whatever works my old yonex 20 years old had from new want something that is going to last a very long time

Love this video, similar to how I set up my current bag, but I'd like to upgrade to fitted driver and maybe irons, got fitted but they could only offer me £400-450 drivers, if I want Longer shafts in my irons or shorter shafts in my driver then how can I get them without spending a fortune? Is it possible to get a fitted driver and irons on a budget of under £500? I see you recommend Benross but that means American golf and they don't have the best reputation when it comes to fitting?

I don’t think it’s bad to focus on driver in your budget. Everyone I know with high handicap struggles the most with driver. Nothing’s worse than ruining a hole on the first shot.
Had a benross driver and hybrid in the bag. Unfortunately benross driver shaft snapped but the hybrid is my favourite club. Any suggestions for upgrading my driver? Been playing about a year and a half and currently having lessons
I still use a Benross VeloCT 5 wood, and a mix of DWS and TWS Baffler hybrids 3,4 and 5! I love them and am reluctant to change. (And I’m a Cat 1 hcp 😁)
I always hear how easy Pings are to hit. I used to Wilson X31s and now have Callaway XR irons and the difference is huge. How would you compare Ping Gs and similar to XR? I’ld love to hear about how irons from different brands compare (when they are aimed at the same target market).
I would disagree on the putter, get one as cheap as possible, and use that saved money elsewhere in the set, I can't see what you would gain with a more expensive putter, but a bit more money on the driver or irons, could help with getting better forgiveness or distance
Had a old package set for years. Just got ping G400 4-sw second hand in great condition for £400. Did I over pay?? Left handed

A bit late to the party but been watching this over and over to try and get myself set up with my first bag. I've managed to get some cheap ping irons. An alright driver. I got the odyssey 2 ball putter. But what should I be looking at for wedges? Finding it hard to get the exact ones mentioned so can anyone else recommend something going at decent prices right now? :)

Great video! I am an average golfer and I am playing a lot more lately, what do you think of my bag, what do you think I should improve? PS: I lack consistency with the woods and wedges: Driver- Nike SQ 460 / Woods - TaylorMade V Steel (3-5) / Irons - Titleist T300 / Wedges- Professional Open series 690 (56/60) / Putter- Odyssey White Ice.

I like the idea of considering when buying I do use my driver a ton on the range mostly for fun but this makes tons of sense for a beginner
I'm really new to golf, only have a couple rounds under my belt, but I personally love hitting Irons and was considering buying some as my first true set of clubs. I'm glad to see that my inclination wasn't an awful idea lol.

Hi Si, great content. Can I ask for your opinion, I have a set of ping g410.4 hybrid which I hit 180y ish (carry). I hit both 5 and 6 iron roughly 165y carry. All reg shafts. My swing speed is approx 75mph (relatively slow). I am looking at ping g400 crossover #5 to replace the 5 iron to get a better gapping. To help with launch should I think of soft regular shaft.
