I e had a persistent black screen right after boot into 11. Have to open task manager then cancel it to get my screen back up. Guessing it's some sort of software thing with 11 considering that's when it started but who knows

  • @finger00

The only black screen issues I've encountered were from display port sometimes not waking on boot.
Selecting video output /CSM set to "Legacy Only" in the BIOS usually fixes the issue.

This video is very helpful and informative. Unfortunately, I had recently installed the RTX 4080 and started experiencing crashes and black screens. It turned out to be a display driver issue so nVidia suggested I run their cleanup tool and now all I get is a black screen upon bootup. I can’t even see anything when connecting to the onboard GPU. I hope I can resolve this as I can’t even use my computer anymore. 😢

Also Britec, a lot of bios manufacturers also set by default that the system will use onboard graphics, but then switch to any video card that is plugged in. I've had a couple where they plugged into the onboard video and nothing. Moved the cable to the video card and automagically it starts working.

I assumed that this video would address the black screen issue when Windows is installing updates in the background on boot up. I've seen that happen on a number of otherwise healthy Windows 10 machines. This video addresses things that are very unlikely, especially on existing systems.

Beforehand, thank you so much for tour video!.
Now, i came here to say, before trying any of these methods here, when i was disconecting everything (mouse, keyboard and other stuff) to move my computer I realizad I had a Capturer card (the ones used to stream videogames on consoles). When I disconnect it i tried to connect the pc and orn it on again and i could finally pass the black screen after a lot of failed attemps I had before disconnecting it.
Do you guys think, that in my case, the capture card was the reason why? And if it is, what would be the reason? J didn't built this PC, a friend did it for my birthday a year ago and I'm looking forward to learn more about all of this so I can take care of it.

I had a similar problem on my wife's PC everything was running fine except, no display. Forced a restart and the display started working. There had been a recent feature update and I found "Fast Startup" had been re-enabled (I always have that permanently disabled myself). Problem solved, Fast Startup, being a form of hibernation, doesn't always initialise the graphics card properly, whereas, restart does. Do not use Fast Startup like other methods of hibernation it can cause many problems.

I had this problem after a Windows update. My TV would show "No Signal" if there were none, but it was getting a signal, just no video. After unsuccessfully trying a few things, I did a system restore and got my video back. The next day I tried the update again with the same results and had to do the system restore again. This time I used my HP Support Assistant to check Windows and it found a problem with Windows Update and was able to fix it until a couple of updates later when the problem came back. This time System Restore didn't fix it, so I restored from a six month old image backup by forcing the computer off every time Windows tried to start. Doing this two or three times gets you the repair options screen without having to boot from a flash drive or booting into safe mode. Then I manually restored back up files and updated the computer and I've not had the problem again. That was about four months ago.

Hello Britec, thank you for the troubleshooting video.
I managed to resolve the issue by taking out and putting back in the CMOS battery (without replacing new one) and also reputting in the RAMs. However, after some time of usage it happened again and I had to repeat the same steps.
Do you know what is the cause of this issue and what should I do to rectify the issue at it's root? I have tried replacing a new CMOS battery too, but the problem re-occurs after some time.
    Many thanks!

Same here. I did the steps and something worked but then it's happening again
Update: my graphics card works, ny power supply works too, it might be a motherboard issue. I also noticed that when it goes from a hard shut down state it will give me this infinite black screen, but when I hit the reset button on my tower while it is on this state (or if I reset in general) then it boots directly to windows

Perfectly working pc... Used msconfig to boot into safe mode, as I have done many many times.
Was going to DDU the gpu driver and try using nvcleanstall. Nvcleanstall has all the bloat Nvidia adds removed. There are like 14 processes Nvidia run when you install their driver.
Hit restart into safe mode and now all I get is a black screen. Moved the GPU to the second PCI-e slot and still black screen. Yanked out the gpu and plugged into the motherboard iGpu and still have a black screen.
I suspect its Windows doing what trash windows always does. It pushes updates out and breaks many things. I am going to try the Cmos clear and see what that does.

I can't get into anything when I start my pc. Its just straight back screen now.
The issue started about a year ago. At first, I would watch something like Hulu or Tubi, and it would go black screen and I had to shut if off and turn pc back on. Then it would only properly boot up maybe half the time. Other half, just turn on and stay at black screen. So I had to keep my pc in sleep mode. It always turns back on proper from sleep mode.
But over this last year, if power goes out, that means I'd have to sit there and turn my pc on and off for like 30 to 60 mins til it properly turned on. It's so annoying.
TH-cam never turned into black screen of death. Just actual movie sites. Tubi, Hulu, Apple, Vudu. But now, my pc will not turn on from black screen. I've turned on off like 50 times over a few hrs.

I have a strange issue with my pc.
Most of the times when i start it up the lights on my keyboard flicker on and off but i get no display. it usually takes a few attempts to finally get Windows to load. but there is never a boot screen of any kind. also most of the times my keyboard does not work, i will have to unplug it several times to make it work.
Does anybody have an idea of where to look?

I had a black screen few minutes after a fresh windows install, as a result of windows automatically trying to install gpu drivers. The safe mode trick gave me the ability to install the proper drivers, after which I could use windows normally. Thank you so much!!!

Black screens are so rare that they almost never occur. The most common cause for black screen would be a dead backlight to a screen.

i had a similar issue when i built my sons pc, worked for a week the just didnt boot, everything was powered on, but no booting, traced it back (by removing all the components) to the power supply, once i put in a new one all was ok, to find out if it is your power supply without buying one, just pop into a pc shop and ask them if they have a test bed, and to plug one of their power supplies into it.

For me it was that I had my TV used as an additional monitor out of my 2 I already hadm both monitors were black and TV was off. So naturally all I saw was two black screens. Once I got to the step of taking corns out I saw the HDMI still hooked to the TV and sure enough that was it lol

Brian. You have just talked about a black screen at boot problem that I have been having for 6 months now. The only caveat is I do have a visible mouse pointer that I can move around but that's it. I have e triple boot system XP, Win7 & Win 10. The black screen problem is on Win7 Ultimate x64. The other two OS's work just fine. Giving you few clues, is there a possible solution for my black screen of death problem at boot?

That's a different black screen of death, I had gotten it and had to say goodbye to my laptop. you will have to take to to be repaired or just replace it.
