It isn't even just GW, it's just as much the author in question. They haven't even figured out that energy weapons shouldn't have recoil.
+@@60sSam+ Depends on the energy weapon i suppose; some people have theorized that a laser weapon might have recoil because of the atmosphere directly in front of the Laser emitter ionizing the atmosphere, causing it to expand and push back. Though that would be a very strange recoil impulse compared to normal guns.
Plasma does have mass so those weapons would also have some kind of recoil but how much I don't know. Particle Beam weapons that spit out their sub-atomic particles fast enough might have murderous recoil because if you rather enough of them together and accelerate them away at high enough velocity then Force = Mass x Acceleration is gonna have something to say; especially if you're holding onto said weapon...
Strap in gang.. Vervunhive was one HELL of a story arc for GG and the Sabbat Worlds crusade. Drama, betrayal, explosions, incompetent IG officers, tatoo'ed under hivers and a reminder even in M41 always wear 'protection'... 🤣
So many interesting notes in this book about what fighting in a city that size would be like. I especially liked the sections about the people trapped outside the hive who became ragtag resistance militias who were half deaf from the constant shelling.
To be fair to the Guard's counter thrust plan proposed by Nash, Gaunt and Gizmund, it wasn't terrible, just based on bad intelligence and faulty assumption. At the time, they believed the Ferrozoican forces hadn't penetrated the Hive Hab zones and would be attacking them in an armoured thrust across the plains favouring the skilled Nemerian armour who could fire on the move, something most of the lesser tank patterns used by PDF and Archenemy in sector couldnt.
That was incorrect. The chance of pulling them up and stopping the enemy reaching the walls was already past and they've of been engaged in urban areas taking huge casulties almost as soon as they kicked off.
The Guard commanders also assumed the Vernrun Primary reports coming in from the initial armour clash were over blown and heavily exadurated as honestly the numbers quoted were way to high for any conventional force the enemy Hive could seemingly raise tainted or otherwise and honestly, the reports were from PDF and a Commissar who was transferred there on punishment detail (no Commissar ends up overseeing PDF unless they've screwed up) so would be looking to possibly increase his own glory and get off Verghast making him equally unreliable, if not more so. The Guard tends to assume they any report from a PDF is exaduarted if not outright fiction until proven otherwise.
The thrust would of been a disaster, but you can see how they reached the conclusion it would work, the logic of trying to kill the enemy momentum and at least gain some ground even if only on a limited front wasn't awful based on what they knew, the problem was everything they knew was wrong it's only after the first storming the sheer scale of the enemy became clear to the Guard and the folly of their intial plan would of been.
That's fair.
They could have at least tried to hamper the enemies siege setup and gain intelligence, but it wouldn't have been a siege ending move
Well having at least some of the Armored and Mechanized units roaming outside of the walls could have been used to harass siege preparations, be long range spotters for the wall guns, prevent or at least stall the later encircling of the northern Hive front and maybe even keep pockets around certain areas of the walls from being directly threatened. Because there was a LOT of traffic jams trying to move that armor around within the city for quite some time during the Wall Storms when they were needed.
@@cnlbenmc Theres certianly an argument for it, but with the EM interferance from the bombardment interfearing with vox once outside the wall it probably wouldn't of worked and with the Zocains having teams in the city the meachnised units would of been easy pickings for HK teams in the urban enviroment, even forward spotters could cause immense damage by calling in arty on the units and without comms to report in or call for help they'd of probably just ended up getting picked off peicemeal

I really wish gw would learn what unit sizes actually are. They say millions give unit sizes in the low thousands. Drives me nuts
I don't mind the varying sizing too much, it's just part of the Guard, but GW really need to put a cap on the upper size limit and introduce the idea that planets found multiple regiments at a time, I mean the Grundite 50th was 500,000 men plus armour and artillery (where as it should have been at least 50 regiments being founded). It also needs to flesh out the gaps in organisation as there isnt anything between company and regiment and no real rank structure exists between Colonel and General, how multi-regiment groups are organised and command selected, it's all sort of hand waved. Poor Sandy Mitchell as usual is they only one whose ever given any thought to how any of this would work and he's efforts were hampered by his fellow writers at Black Libary having zero clue about anything and writing whatever seems edgiest at the time.
@maddlarkin At least in the American military, Colonel is the highest ranking officer below the General Officer ranks (of which there are 4: Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General).
@@maddlarkin IIRC the Death Korps regiments are usually 10,000 to 100,000. Given the size of 40K conflicts, and that a regiment seems to be the smallest unit size commanded by offworld commanders, 100k seems fairly reasonable, if even small. You'd want regiments big enough that you don't need to find and order 700 separate independent regiments to head to a large front, and small enough that having 1-3 is a sensible scale for small conflicts.
Ah the part that gives my possibly all time favourite 40k quote:

Perfectly summarises what an Imperial Commisar should be.
The Dark Mechanicum truly is one of the most underappreciated parts of 40K. Them and the Q'Orl Swarm

This became a long nightmarish siege of Troy and Gondor but with the big spider mech from the Wild Wild West movie.
The problems of the Vervun Primary might have been only touched upon here..........but, that will only be one of many issues that would plague the Imperial Command almost to the point of winning the war for Chaos.

22:30 I am a tad bit surprised that Vervunhive didn't feature Aircraft. Heritor Asphodel undoubtedly had the expertise to make some. The Imperials otherwise could have made great use of them destroying the siege guns/ engines.
It's been a while since I have read the book, but I don't think the book ever established just how far the shield over the city came down. There are scenes where the wall guns and AA are described as firing out at targets at long range towards the beginning, but I don't remember if those shots were through the shield or not. So if the shield came low enough it may have made aircraft useless.
The book does describe the incoming artillery barage being so thick it was splashing like rain on the shield so it may not have been safe for aircraft to even fly near there.
There also sections when they discover Asphodel is in charge where I believe they mention those type of siege machines are a favorite/specialty of his so he may just default to those first instead of flyers because he simply likes them and enjoys making them more.

Assuming a Regiment is a Regiment, and using today's Earth Regiments as a standard measure you should probably drop a zero from your numbers as a start. A Regiment is anywhere from 1500-3000 men depending on specialty. A tank Regiment, based on a US Army WW2 Armored Regiment would consist of approximately 171 tanks.
I've always been happy to accept a regiment being upto a million men in 40k

if i remember the last time i looked the tanith first and only on the fan wiki correctly they have a size of rangeing from 1500 to 4000 men in the books.

As a former student, and now a history teacher, when I discovered "Necropolis" and the battle of Vervunhive, I always thought Abnett took inspiration from Stalingrad. Yet, the more I learn and teach about WW2, the more I think about Warsaw. Any idea or opinion, people ?...

Divisions as part of regiment isn't unheard of. British army, for example, during 18th century would often deploy their troops in such manner. It was ad-hoc unit on level between company and section I believe.

As long as we're talking about numbers, these are not hives. "Vervunhive" has a pop of 40 milllion. That's a city. 4 BILLION is a hive.
3:14 I realize that was just an asset used by the artist, but I could 100% see a world terraformed during the Dark Age of Technology or Great Crusade to have nearly identical geography to Holy Terra as it originally was.

I love these lore videos far more than I enjoyed reading the actual Gaunts Ghosts novels. Well done sir, very well done.
And listening to this one and your story on vraks I’ve come to one in inevitable conclusion, while the space Marines seem to get all of the glory and all of the accolades it is the men and women of the imperial guard do most of the work so the poster boys can look good . If I was running the things marines space marine chapters every time there’s a campaign would have to dedicate at least one or two divisions, or whatever they could afford to lose, give them over to imperial army comand and they would do at least 2 to 3 tours in every campaign

A rare day where Gaunt’s thwarted plans were actually the wrong call. Probably unintentional by Abnett, but it’s the sort of error worth turning into a moment of self-reflection for Gaunt in a future work.
Imagine having a regiment or three of Kriegs guardsmen. They would have 💯 behind the rolling spearhead plan.
The IG v the Ferrizoikenns is the sort of the force disparity where even an Astartes chapter or three say " Nah. Thanks for asking. Where is the nearest Tyrannid splinter?"
The names of places and people in this series are absolutely dreadful. Even by 40K standards.

So a regiment is actually a division and a division is a company?
And a section is more like a platoon
It’s all relative when you think of the actual scale of 40k it would be more likely that a regiment is closer to a reinforced division so roughly 35 to 45 thousand men and a reinforced regiment more like the 50 to 65 thousands as you have to remember those numbers include all of the support and logistics troops as well so likely the total military strength is in the 100s thousands for the defenders in terms of guardsmen, but they are facing millions of fanatics with equal if not greater equipment…

The United States Army and Marine Corps use different military organizations. The Army uses brigades. While the Marines use Regiments. There's some armies that have multiple regiments forming brigades. But, the two formations are placed between battalions and divisions. In terms of size.
