"For Asians" is nonsense, the original Demon's Souls flopped in Japan. Sony refused to publish it in the West, Atlas & Namco picked it up and it was a huge success. We (western gamers) literally "chose" this genre because it matched the sensibilities of a decent portion of our gamers. Elden Ring has 1 million(ish) sales in japan, the rest of that 13 million+ in sales is everywhere else. This style of game is very much for us, even if that wasn't the original intention.

It's funny knowing that Western gamers essentially created the most influential game since Doom simply by enjoying a game that it's intended audience didn't. Something about Souls-Likes connects with Western gamers in a special way. Look at all the indie souls-likes, essentially all of them are made by Western developers out of appreciation for a game style perfected by (the first half of) Dark Souls.

    • @jhm3346
      @jhm3346 2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

Gotta be slightly fair there, the 1 million sales of a niche type game that requires a beefy system to play well (or a console that is also hard to get) in Japan is probably good. Thats almost 1% of their entire population buying a single video game. Keeping in mind that their 125m population is around 1:60 of the population of the world so if the rest of the world only bought 13 million copies compared to their 1 million they have far outdone most places.

I don't agree with the post of that dev at all, BUT this video incorrectly interprets what that dev was saying. Mental models are things developers build in order to try and create UI that accommodates the user base that will be using the product. Saying that Japanese developers might be using different mental models than western developers is not the equivalent to saying "oriental people have limited mental abilities". Its simply saying that Japanese devs might using different mental models to western devs (which is probably true). I still disagree with their point about the UI being bad, ER UI is great. However, this video does a disservice by not properly understanding the terminology that developers use and making it sound like the dev was saying Japanese people are dumb or something.

As a westerner trying to be gamedev/artist, I need to express something...
In the last few months I've seen these discussions about western professionals criticizing Elden Ring's UI for being "bad", when in fact it's just clean (it gives you the information you need to play and react fast and simple, and you get rewarded for playing - unlike Assassins Creed, where icons mark the distance between you and objectives, has quest lists that accumulate in a hell of 'same things' ; in games like FS games, BOTW, some Capcom you are rewarded for exploring or just playing, and is fun).
And it's all this Western Criticism is for a very simple reason (apart from envy): we have a weird "there's only one way to do something right" way of thinking. And the most bizarre thing is when you realize it's just illogical! I see a lot in the community here (artist, gamedev and schools) talking about "if you're going to make art, don't overdesign the character/object; keep it simple because 'less is more'" and often it just results in more of the same (a knight / green goblin / scifi soldier / the cartoon furry; all with a style emulating Blizzard art... in this you have a hypocritical artist from Bioware criticizing Tree Sentinel's design for it being golden and being an enemy because is a basic rule that "gold is good"). At the same time, when they talk about UI in game dev schools, it's like "read the line that says not to pollute the interface... now throw that away, let's overdesign it and put a lot of information that gives the player a illusion that he is progressing and he has a LOT to do (even if they are the same type of missions)!"
There are fundamentals, but they don't stop you from distorting them or doing something "creative", as long as it's to give a better user experience and with purpose (which here between us, seems to be rare in large western industries lately..." Did you know that Disney is going to make a live action movie out of yet another animation?"). In the end, if you make a dirty interface in a game that is sometimes forgettable and you are complaining that another game is dominating the audience by doing something different... it just shows that you are not creative (and you if your awnser is being racist/xenophobic, it just shows that you have a rotten brain)!

They want to throw all the information at the pilot, just like a real pilot in a plane. That is why they put "gauges" all over the screen. Where ER took an open world approach where you are not a pilot but an adventurer. Their main purpose was to make you "feel" your way through a game, like a person riding a pedal bike.

I feel like AAA western devs straight up don't know how to convey information. I'm a writer, and one of the first things you learn is to trust your readers to understand what you are conveying. This applies to essentially every medium of information.
Your players aren't braindead morons who need a pacifier shoved in their mouths at all times, we don't need to be handholded to such a degree that we can't see what's going on behind all the different popups. If your UI is noticed by players, you have failed in your job. Throwing 50 Skinner boxes on the screen is not the way to engage players. If the method of conveying information is noticed before the actual information, you have a serious problem.

For Western developers, gamers are housewives and men over 50 who believe that games for morons can be played once. It is because of them that the industry began to change in 2008.
Take indie games or where there is no gaming industry, they rely on the fact that the player, if he does not understand, will go to the forum and find what he needs (after all, it's his fault that he did not guess). I remember how in games there was a label where to go and then a car race to it. And the developers have not been able to answer and what washed away the game then? If your game design forces you to come up with such fixes.

Regardless of what obstacle they put in your way they know so long as you can see that tower somewhere in the horizon, you will make it there. Meanwhile those western devs would likely put not only a giant neon crazy taxi arrow on the top of the screen, but also a glowy trail pointing you towards the easiest path which won't let you even see there was a giant canyon you can't cross normally, and big letters on the left or right of the screen saying "go to the tower" while your character says "I should hurry and make my way to that tower" while also muttering about every little thing you pass and having a big camera zoom like a cutscene as you approach the 1 Bridge in the area that will let you cross that canyon.

Eh... I can understand different design paradigms being rooted in culture. The existence of JRPGs as a subgenre of RPGs originating in Japan demonstrates this. While many Western RPGs embraced the idea of making one's own character unique, with a degree of player-driven choices in dialogue and personality, JRPGs focused on tightly defined protagonists and linear character development paths (though at times with choice in advancement paths). Even with a strong overlap in markets, the distinction between these two paradigms remains and one cannot ignore their cultural-geographical origins. For that reason, I wouldn't say that the claim that From's UI design may be rooted in Japanese culture (specifically, game design culture) is necessarily bigoted. The problem is more that these Western devs are so wedded to the paradigms that they've been taught that they cannot stand anything from outside the box they've place themselves within. It's certainly narrowminded, but not necessarily racist.

Yep, came here to say this. The concrete example he gave is that you can't equip from the inventory screen, which is true and would have been nice. Another example is that the button to open the map is not the same as the one to close it. Is it a big deal, no, but it would be a quality of life improvement. Everyone just assumed that he meant that everything about the UI is bad, when he never said or alluded to that.
Further, the mental model that he was talking about has a specific meaning in UI/UX, which is the way people process data in their heads and the interface may have been developed with that in mind. For example, reading left to right vs reading right to left, or top to bottom. That's just one example of how different cultures may process info differently and therefore the thought process is different. It does not mean he was somehow being racist or ridiculing Japanese devs for creating UI that makes sense to them but not westerners, and I'd argue not even necessarily narrowminded (depending on what exact issues he's talking about of course) since to me this feels like a post having a whinge rather than a serious critique of the game.
I agree though that some of these devs may have overestimated the importance of UI in the overall experience or thought that people could not adapt to a different mental model, and therefore it must be bad.

As a fresh web dev i find this take funny since i was taugh that the best way for UX(at least for web design) is the simplified one where each functions is made clear and grouped by uses then sepreated by whitespace which ER's UI is. And as someone who enjoy games for the longest time a lot of game now a day seem like that they will hold your hand until you reached either mid game or end game and treat user like a child which a lot of time pissed the user off.

2:20 The supposed "UI Problem" can easily be explained by the game being developed from the ground up as a console game. It seems they wanted a CRPG style inventory screen, where the UI is an overlay and the items and equipment slots are on the same page. This is doable only because of the mouse, which lets you drag and drop items as you want. Furthermore, with the mouse you can float over an item and the item description appears. Obviously, this is difficult with a controller.
4:00 If that is even remotely true, then Diablo and MMORPGs should never be popular in Asia. Ergo, wrong. Korea alone probably developed half of all MMORPGs of the 2000s and 2010s.

Woah dude, no. I love your videos, but no. You have absolutely twisted those words to push a narrative. There is a TON of evidence that people in different countries see things differently. This is well known by designers. To generalize - Asian countries tend to have a more 'wholistic' way of breaking down information while western countries are more 'compartmentalized.' For example: If you look at the From Software level up screen, it presents a very large amount of information at once from resistances to health to damage per attack to scaling, etc.; now, look at the average western 'skill tree' where each little box presents its one thing it does when selected but otherwise there is no info on screen. I don't want to get into why this happens, because that's an essay, but it's very much a cultural thing.
Now, the dev's comment of suffering to equip is ridiculous, but to say the different cultures have different approaches to UI is 100% true and is backed by science and basic observation. However, you have thoroughly stuffed words into his mouth about 'Asians being lesser.' He's effectively saying that he struggles with the UI because it's different than what he is used to. Also, the tweet was specifically talking about inventory management and you've gone on to compare it to the HUD and how western game HUDs are busy. Bo is basically arguing that the FromSoftware UI for inventory management is TOO COMPLEX and the argument you're making in this video boils down to "Bo is racist because he thinks Japanese people need a simpler HUD because they're stupid." It's both backward and off base. The mental gymnastics here are nutso.
He also didn't 'dismiss Elden Ring because it was made by Asian people,' he literally just complained about a single UI feature. It's not racist to dislike a specific style of UI. Am I racist because I don't like minimaps? Which country invented minimaps? Apparently, I hate those people.
TLDR: The mental gymnastics you performed to twist this guy's words into something racist are honestly really awful. It makes me feel like you're arguing in bad faith and, overall, it's a bad take. You are doing the exact type of thing you claim to hate - pure hypocrisy. You've lost a sub.

Was watching and waiting for the racism. All I saw in the end was an overreaction.
Mental Model is a UI/UX term that demonstrates how a certain type of person might react differently from someone else. Like the mental model of UK drivers is to drive on the left while the mental model of americans is to drive on the right. Making an American drive on the left will shock that mental model and may result in the product forcing this behaviour to fail. Nothing about what the guy said was remotely racist. It was a genuine question. Go play some Asian MMOs and you'll find in many of them, equipping gear can be as complicated as it is troublesome. Is that a mental model thing? That's what the dev was asking.
Personally, I find the equipping of gear to be cumbersome in Elden Ring. There are other games that do it better. And Elden Ring also does some things better than others. Is it a big deal? No. Does it shake my mental model? Absolutely. Why? Because I'm not a mono-gamer. I don't just play the one game and have that be my entire construct of what games are.
Just wanted to end off with, when you see racism everywhere, you're going to use it as a crutch to enforce your own opinion. Trust me, I know. I'm asian, living in Asia and not the right kind of asian. I know racism better than I know my own hand.
And I know my hand a lot ;)

There's nothing wrong with political/philosophical messages in a game IMO. Most kinds of games are forced to display political views of some sort, people just complain when said views aren't main-stream enough. For example, very few people complain about CoD for overtly supporting U.S. imperialism yet people complain that killing Nazis is glorified in a series like Wolfenstein. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree.

@@VastChoirs I just believe it’s near impossible to make an a-political game. Just like every other form of media, it’s impossible to remove bias. It’s just that some forms of bias are more accepted than others. A better comparison would be between a cod: modern warfare game in which you kill (usually arabic) ‘terrorists’ en mass is seen as fine whereas a game like Fursan al-aqsa which has you kill idf soldiers sparked quite a bit of outrage despite its very small presence. I think political messaging is only problematic when it messes with other aspects of the game. For example. Cod: vanguard has the team names as “friendly team” and “enemy team” as they don’t want people to play as the nazis and that’s outright stupid. Mainstream ‘wokeness’ is problematic because it never pushes for real change. It’s a pathetic attempt to make it look like they are trying to appease social progressives while staying well in the field of commercial acceptability. As I’ve already established that all types of media are subject to bias, I’ll use the counter-example of the show squid games, which is overtly anti-capitalist with how it displays the dystopian situation the characters face. While it succeeded, most other similarly political works have not, and that is why we ended up with the ‘wokeness’ that everyone seems to hate.

@@VastChoirs I haven’t played any fromsoft games other than elden ring, but as far as elden ring goes I’d agree. Due to the game’s setting it would be pretty difficult and obnoxious to put political messages in the game, apart from the obvious allegory of caelid clearly being inspired by Ohio and Brazil. Jokes aside, while I completely agree as far as elden ring being a-political, I think it mostly has to do with the games scale. Elden ring operates on the scale of your actions affecting all living things. Each of the endings influences the fate of all life in the lands between, not just one nationality, sex, race, or class etc. Therefor, it deals with issues more perceived as philosophical rather than political. To be clear, I don’t disagree with you about from’s games. I just think that most settings will force games to deal with at least some amount of political argument and to reject all of said arguments would be futile.

Its how I read it but the Dev has obviously been locked in a cupboard too long and doesn't understand how to construct a decent sentence. I could he wrong and there was malice behind it but I don't know.
In regards to the commentary in this vid, I love you man but you have filled in a lot of gaps with assumptions and used a lot on inflammatory language, because like you say you support the Asian style of games and have come out in defence rather than looking at it in a balanced and objectified view.
And it is a little blind to say that there aren't any differences in cultures and beliefs. There are huge differences and rather trying to get anyone thinking and acting the same we should embrace those differences. So if the Asian want (I'm not a market expert on gaming but I do work for a big car manufacturer and know what we have to develop and sell in the Asian markets in much different way to Europe and America) to have simplified UI, so what, just because it might be a culture thing that less is more, doesn't insinuate your are dumb.
