I agree with her! 35 years before I knew about Langer’s work, I told myself that having children would not make me fat (I ended up weighing 20 pounds less after having kids). I told myself that menopause would be no big deal (it wasn’t) and wouldn’t lead to a fat belly and I wouldn’t need hormone replacement (I didn’t). Although I’m a focus group of one, I think positive thoughts have really made a difference in my life!!
@nikkireed9504 I love that " I'm a focused group of one" I'm a late bloomer in all this work woo stuff, but recent events have shown me that I might be using whatever power I'm not aware of against me. Two months ago an old held by Scotch tape truck, decided to use my brand new car as I stop sign and totalled it, with me in it, while I was fully stopped ....for years I had the casual intrusive thought of " let go of worrying about accidents, the explosion would let you know" I used to say that to calm my stupid energy wasting anxiety ....but the improbable way, this accident occurred, where, what time it was, and what witnesses told me and the police has me almost convinced that I played a woo woo part in this thing, cause literally I had no way to see where he was coming from, and the air bag " explosion" is what let me know that I was part of an accident. And I get to walk away from this thing with a small scratch from the air bag, which since has disappeared, the scratch and the airbag too....but maybe I do have some woo woo influence....Holly shit! I better start intentionally stopping this monkey mind from being the master. Thank you for letting me ramble.
Ellen Langer snapped me out of trance with her story about her house burning down, and how calm she was talki ng with the insurance rep after. He said something like "Are you OK? You've lost everything and you're the calmest customer I've ever had. Most people are out of their minds with grief and loss after a fire of this magnitude." And Langer replies "I've already lost everything. I'm not going to keep reliving it." Great example of how to snap out of trance and learn to train yourself to direct thoughts. And as a feminist I love the fact that Langer was out beating the drum for mindfulness long before all the Power of Now and Wisdom 2.0 men came along to save us.
I’m shocked at how little this “expert” understands how meditation and mindfulness actually work.😮 But the premise of her research is absolutely valid…and absolutely in the point of Buddhism and Taoism. Science as always waaaay behind the curve. Dan was very tactful as always!
this comment is a perfect example of what she talked about in that we think our way of seeing truth is TRUTH from all perceptions...ha ha you are funny.
This chick is so badass! If you listen closely for it, she drops serious wisdom in this. Stay immersed in the moment, and always know that knowledge is provisional, and that all things come and go. Whala! Peace and love y’all
It's about time you interviewed Great Aunt Boobala! 😂 Wow. Too much to say about this guest here, so I'll make a Dan comment: to me, this interview showcased your grace and sense of humor, as well as the growing peace and wisdom that abides between your ego and the universe. 🕊
Her point of view that becoming mindful and more aware more often of the impermanence of everything, is something we can just "get" , seems hopelessly naive for most of us (she herself seems to be an exception). Perhaps others can simply become more mindful by telling themselves one liners like "everything changes". But, for the rest of us, we default to saying "no" when life changes in ways we don't want it to (aging is an example). The challenge for me is not knowing better (about life's ever changing nature) but doing better, moment to moment. Her dismissal of meditation and its effects on being non judgemental , "i don't buy it" she says, is a misunderstanding. I am not non-judgemental from meditation. Rather , i now find it harder to stick with and continue to believe in the judgemental thoughts that still arise. I see my ongoing judgemental thoughts for what they are, and in that awareness their power fades. She has lots of good ideas for sure and is clearly very intelligent (and aging well!). If only being mindful was simply a matter of "getting it". For me , i need a n ongoing practice to remind me, over and over again, that things change , and it is my resistance that causes me to suffer more than i have to (second arrow).
I agree with her that it is actually very easy. However, I had to read a lot, every book she has ever written in fact in order to realise how easy it is.
What a wonderful interview! I’ve read some of Ellen Langer’s work and am excited to read her new book. I’m so glad you had her on. (Though I have to admit to feeling slightly uncomfortable with what seemed like her dismissal of the benefits of meditation. Perhaps she’s not familiar with *your* books?) Regardless, I love your show, I read your first book when it came out. For me, it was another validation for practicing meditation. Thank you.
I love your show Dan, but I couldn’t get through this episode. You have the patience of a saint. Her open hostility towards meditation - even going so far as calling this ancient modality “woo woo” - was stunningly disrespectful. Her disdain for mindfulness meditation, even though her field of work includes mindfulness, creates a massive blind spot in her understanding & interpretation of her own research. Send Dr. Langer back over to Huberman so she can rub elbows with other members of the Ivy League Aristocracy.
Her message is convincing and appealing. Yet, it is not a discovery, nor an exclusivity, the interconnexion between mind and body has been known for at least 2.600 years ago, exposed by Buddha Sakyamuni and others. Further, dispising meditation undermines her credibility. There is an increasing number of scientific evidences on the constructive impact of meditation, not to mention thousands of personal experiences. Even the “woowoo” meditation will bring some benefit to the person. Beside the fact that there are various types of meditation, the technic of mindfulness in daily life will definitly be inhanced by meditation on mindfulness. Anyway, thank you Dan for this interview.
Very interesting woman but she is so closed minded in a way. Joseph Goldstein specifically recommends curiosity towards everything. He also specifies constant change is happening . He also teaches noticing pain and following what happens when you give it attention. I’m starting to get a little irritated with her dismissal of anyone else’s words. That being said I think what she talks about her work is important and valuable.
It looks she doesn't know anything about mindfulness in the Buddhist context but she is not aware of that. The contents she was bringing about "her mindfulness" were perfectly consistent with Buddhist mindfulness. Also, I felt a bit annoyed by her seeming very much arrogant. But thanks to meditation, I try non to attach to my judgment and leave her the benefit of the doubt. Lastly, what she said about terminal patients with cancer potentially spontaneously recovering is quite dangerous.
Buddhist perception is not the only one there is......once again, someone has decided they know the TRUTH......of course she is quite familiar with other perceptions!
@andreatamborrino1213 Thank God you're a non judgemental meditation practitioner. And thank God, you are not rigid, and know ultimate Truths. This guy made a mistake, he should've interviewed you! You know what's really going on.
Okay I have to make another comment. She really does think she’s the smartest in the room and Dan is an idiot. Arrogance which she probably thinks is well earned. At the end of the interview she does bring forth some valuable and insightful ideas.
I think people forget shes explaing from a scientific provable aspect, not spiritual. Her experience is science and scientific proof. Its about recognizing this has a massice scientific connection that can be proved. She is very careful to not present herself as a spiritual guru, but that doesnt mean she doesnt know or understtand..its important to realize the scientific connection gives a greater level of proof that the mindfulness works. She is from as time when it was considered quackery, and one of they way it was delt with was to present practicle metjods. Stress management used to be studied using deep breathing, progressive relaxtation, and imagery...that was used for years...gues what that is??? Mindful relaxation...she is quite knowledgeable and if you read any of her books, know she understands the spiriutal, but does not present that as her wheelhouse...it isnt..science is her knowledge base. But its same, regardless of language. She is brillient and has helped legitimizing mindfulness in science. She not a spiritual guru, shes a scientist, explaing the work of mindfulness and healing.
For a person who prides herself on understanding probability, she appears oblivious to it in practice. She speaks as if she knows what she admits no one can know (e.g., meditation does not make you less judgmental.) A curious practice.
Seeing this from the perspective of my lived experience in chronic illness. It sounds like she is saying that anyone who is sick is at fault for their own thinking? Just don't be stressed? really?
Oh dear, she really needs to come up with different stories. I watched 10 interviews with her and each one she’s told the pancreas story the horse the chambermaids I love her, but she needs new material or to omit it. Her story and ideas can still be shared without the repetitive content.
Not sure how much stock I can put in people who continue referring to themselves in the 3rd person. I find this lady abrasively obnoxious and still using her silly pancreous story, pass
I like and respect her but she does not actually explain the difference between snake oil and belief which if they produce a result seem essentially the same

I love that " I'm a focused group of one"

Lot of hate in the comments from so called non judgemental people. I appreciate your help Ellen.

I love what this woman has to say. ❤️❤️❤️
Don't they have seminars where people ask questions at Harvard? Dan was being extra polite with his questions but she seemed to take offense

I’m loving Dan’s facial expressions 😂
Lol I was noticing those too.

here for the comments! fascinating stuff…but trying to figure out the discomfort, disconcerting aspect. Glad I wasn’t the only one picking up on it.

This is wonderfull !!!
I feel a lot of people didn't get her. She's a strong woman speaking her mind. It made me like Dan's show even more.
Her message is convincing and appealing. You are making judgments against her which are a tad unfair. Please read her book becoming an artist, the whole book is about open mindedness.
She seems to be a person that would benefit greatly by a meditation practice.
Why's that
It looks she doesn't know anything about mindfulness in the Buddhist context but she is not aware of that. The contents she was bringing about "her mindfulness" were perfectly consistent with Buddhist mindfulness. Also, I felt a bit annoyed by her seeming very much arrogant. You know what's really going on.
Why does her research on mindfulness have to fit in with a Buddhism, she isn't a monk.
hmm, I'm not 10% happier watching this... live aloha
Okay I have to make another comment. She really does think she’s the smartest in the room and Dan is an idiot. Arrogance which she probably thinks is well earned. At the end of the interview she does bring forth some valuable and insightful ideas.
no, you do not see at least from my perception
I think people forget shes explaing from a scientific provable aspect, not spiritual. Her experience is science and scientific proof. poor Dan looks like he is being told off! I understand what she is saying but a bit lecturing for me.
Oh dear, she really needs to come up with different stories. I watched 10 interviews with her and each one she’s told the pancreas story the horse the chambermaids I love her, but she needs new material or to omit it. Her story and ideas can still be shared without the repetitive content.
interesting and irritating all at the same time.
Not sure how much stock I can put in people who continue referring to themselves in the 3rd person. I find this lady abrasively obnoxious and still using her silly pancreous story, pass
I couldnt follow in some parts
I like and respect her but she does not actually explain the difference between snake oil and belief which if they produce a result seem essentially the same
Both people are talking the same....just different language....
Umm, ye 🤔🫣🙄
Your wife is dehydrated. She needs water and salt and her headaches will heal.
Heavy breathing
This lady has bad karma.
