SF4 was one of my first ever fighting games that wasn't in the Tekken series. I rented it from a video game rental store a couple years after it came out, and I remember looking at the cast and thinking there were so many cool and interesting characters, but who did I choose? The prisoner that could throw rocks and yell Bingo! Ya, I mained Cody back in the day and I sucked so bad at it. Good times.

My first impression with SF4 (and the whole series) was actually really bad.
We played Tekken and MK a lot before and were used to being able to just mostly mash buttons to do cool stuff, but in SF4 we were just whiffing normals all the time, couldn't do even simple combos and couldn't even figure out how to do most specials, let alone supers, even when we saw the required inputs in the command list we still couldn't usually get the timing right.
We've lost interest in the game and I only returned several years later when I bumped into a great tutorial on youtube that explained how combos, specials, supers or focus attack worked. Since then I've became a huge fan of traditional 2D fighters. Really shows how important good tutorials are in fighting games, and how the lack of them can alienate newcomers. The sad thing is that even nearly 15 years later the big fighting games hardly include any tutorials.

@@TehUnHolySkittles929 I never mentioned nostalgia, nor did Max. I'm talking about hype, the term he chose for the title. I don't think hype and nostalgia are interchangeable terms. You can be nostalgic for many, many things without taking something to a high level of fandom. When something rare really gets you hype, and there are also tournaments where other players that are hype about it gather in your area, you generally go if you can. Hype is more than basic nostalgia. And I agree that you can be nostalgic for a game without going to tournaments, but are you truly HYPE if the tournament came to town multiple times and you always choose to do something else instead?

Has any pro athlete been able to avoid public competition at high levels for most of their career? I'll go with streamer then. He's chosen streaming over tournament play many times. And that's perfectly fine! But are you really hype for the game, or the viewer count?? It seems then that he is nostalgic for the game, and more hype for the viewer count.

I always find it interesting that the SFIV team at Capcom originally weren't sure if they were able to handle adapting the franchise into "3D" themselves for so long, only for them to then see Arc System Works' Battle Fantasia, which then gave them the confidence that they could actually do it if they followed ArcSys' lead, in terms of visual style. In essence, Arc System Works is the reason why Street Fighter was able to be revived, in general.

The most important fighting game of all time is Street Fighter 2.
The SECOND most important fighting game of all time is Street Fighter 4.
Except for a few franchises still barely hanging on like Tekken and KOF, fighring games pretty much DIED in rhe aughts as a genre. Street Fighter 4 revived the fighting game scene with a vengeance and was the first game od the modern fighting game tournament scene. EVO would not be the big deal it is now without SF4.
I remember I was in basic training for the US Army back in 2007, and part of basic training is, obviously, that you don't have access to social media or electronic devices during the 9 weeks of it. The only real access to any outside news is either if your drill sergeants told you any (fat chance) or if your family and friends tell you any through letters from home. Well, I received a letter from my brother, and he obviously got me up to speed on gaming news. I started to read the letter, and suddenly I shout at the top of my lungs:
"CAPCOM IS MAKING STREET FIGHTER 4!!!"
My entire bay of basic training mates erupted in cheers and applause. The drill sergeant on duty walked in angry at the sudden outburst, and smoked us, and he asked me what the fuck that was about. When I told him that Street Fighter 4 was coming out, he immediately ran into his office, and 5 minutes later, he let us watch the teaser on the computer. It was one of my favorite memories of my Army career.
Street Fighter 4 has a special place in my heart. It still is, IMHO, the best Street Fighter game after all its iterations, and my favorite fighting game ever, even dethroning Capcom Vs. SNK 2 in that regard.

I remember crying my eyes out cuz I couldn’t do specials (I was 12 at the time I used to main akuma, ryu, gouken) although i mashed and mashed it grew to combos and then long ones the amount of insanity I had to deal with in training mode trying to copy combos and also trying to be creative is insane I will always love street fighter 4

This also came out at the time when Capcom was starting to take PC ports more seriously and it was a big deal for me, because it was an ACTUAL quality port and I LOOOVED the heck out of this game and I have plenty of memories of playing this specific version with my cousin and my nephew. Granted, it was a Games For Windows Live release, so it was not perfect. I remember dreading having to fight against AI Zangief more than Seth himself, those grabs were DEVASTATING in this game. Maybe it's time to reinstall Ultra, just for nostalgia sake.

Damn that Cammy match really did bring up some nightmarish memories. SF4 was the first FG for me and i played it with classmates but couldn't play online, so playing against AI was the only way to actually learn something. Cammy, Gief and Hakan were the bane of my existence as a noob Juri player. I should still have in an old HDD the recording of when i finally managed to win against a max difficulty AI Zangief in vs mode, after hours and hours of trying non-stop. I remember showing it proudly to one of my classmates that played Gief and was the only one with prior FGs experience (albeit in Tekken) and the one who was always on top of our little tournaments.

Street Fighter IV holds a special place in my heart. Not only did it bring me out of semi-retirement when it comes to video games but it outright saved the fighting game genre. After this we got that boom period of Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat (2011), Street Fighter III Third Strike Online, King of Fighter XIII, Injustice, Street Fighter X Tekken (super underrated), Persona 4 Arena, Tekken Tag 2, Skullgirls, Dead or Alive 5 and Blazblue Calamity Trigger. It was a glorious time.

man I remember the hype for this game like it was yesterday I was totally like those dudes in the car screaming street fighter 4 with my friends at the top of our lungs if you weren't around it is hard to explain basically in the 90's I could get anybody to play street fighter 2 with me but street fighter 3 practically no one not even in arcades but street fighter 4? everybody played that game with me I had no trouble finding opponents whether it was online or irl that is how well known this game was and why max said it brought street fighter back from the dead because it basically did for better or worse

I definitely took Street Fighter IV for granted for many years.
Not only was it a great game, it was the revival of the 2D Fighter that was sorely needed. In the 2000s most if not all fighting games were 3D. You had Tekken, you had Soul Calibur(which was Tekken with swords), Dead or Alive(which was Tekken but horny) and the Mortal Kombat 3D era games (which were trying to be Tekken with swords but gory) you had maybe 1 or 2 2D fighters creep up here and there, but they weren't big titles.
And then Street Fighter IV released and changed everything. Because of SFIVs success a new era of fighting games boomed. Without SFIV we wouldn't have the new era of Mortal Kombat games(which are amazing), the smorgasbord of 2D anime fighters like Blazblue and Guilty Gear and of course the revival of franchises like Killer Instinct and King of Fighters.
Street Fighter may not be my favorite fighting game series out there, but there's no denying the impact that Street Fighter IV had in the genre.
It's a shame the same guy that revived Street Fighter also crapped the bed with SFxTekken and Street Fighter V. And still no Darkstalkers IV either. *sigh*

The first fighting game I really tried to learn. Before I had played a bunch of Tekken but only as a normal casual but one day in 2010 I cam across a video of SF4 and it was Ryu vs Ken and it looked so cool and technical and I immediately wanted to play it and so I did and here I am 12 years later still playing fighting games, at an intermediate level at best but still improving. Also funny fact about that video I saw, at the time it looked super high level and fast and hype but I found it again 10 years later and it was hilariously low level, even more hilariously one of the players was Poongko, the Poongko, crazy ass Seth player Poongko. How things have changed.
