For anyone curious, this is a real SNES running KI but the audio was modified to be HQ versions of the songs. These are known as MSU-1 mods, allowing certain carts able to run much higher quality music/audio and other cool stuff. Check out more MSU1 stuff here www.vgmoz.com/msu-1-enhanced-games-roundup-cd-audio/

I've pre-ordered KOF15 and paid it all off.

this game was my first introduction to fighting games and it absolutely mesmerized me. the soundtrack, the announcer, the visuals, the cast, everything was just amazing. playing against my brothers, who were godlike, as a wee lad were some of my favorite memories and made me want to graduate from just mashing buttons so i could do the sick shit they were doing. this game to this today is still my favorite fighting game and one of my favorite games of all time

Not gonna lie, I got slapped with huge wave of nostalgia. I remember my older sister owning this when I was 5 years old.
This and Street Fighter II Turbo were not only my introduction to fighting games, but video games as a whole.
Seeing you react to the return of KI back in 2013 made me so happy because not many people I knew played this game growing up. It was one of the main reasons why I subbed to you back then, and I'm glad to see you since.

This game holds one of the biggest spots in my heart. It was quite literally the first game i ever played. I played it with my older brother almost every day.
Fun story, (I'm 24 now) when I was in high school i was part of a gaming club and our teacher who ran the club brought in his SNES with KI. I hadn't touched the game in over a decade by this point. I started playing with one of my friends and my hands quite literally started moving in ways I didn't know they could for this game and i performed Cinder's Ultra Combo. Truly a special game lol

This was my first competitive, learn everything, know all the characters fighting game, too. No strategy guide, no internet, just figuring out what chains to what, until you get it.
Per generation, it was this, MK3. Then SFA3 and SSB. Oh, those were the days.
Shared consoles, figuring out whose bringing the cart, disc and console, all chip in for pizza, and after school clubs.
    The original FGC.

I find it hilarious that Max was basically the villain in a kids movie back in 1995-6. Think about it, this one kid who comes in a mops the floor with everyone, that everyone would cheer the defeat of? That's the bad guy in those stock films that amount to Karate Kid knock-offs.

  • @KingMalaxis
    @KingMalaxis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I can relate to Max a lot here. I remember playing Killer Instinct for the first time back when I was still in kindergarten and my uncle and a friend of my mom introduced me to it. I still remember the late Saturday nights playing it in my pajamas, trying to learn the Ultras and “fatalities”. I wasn’t exactly the best at it, but it’s absolutely one of the games that not only kindled my interest in fighting games, it also constantly brings me the nostalgia of my early youth of how so incredibly fun video games were.

  • @TheRogueWolf
    @TheRogueWolf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Great memories of playing this at the mall arcade, often against the teenage girl they employed to make change when the change machines weren't working (she always picked Sabrewulf). I loved this game as much for its crazy CGi characters as for the wild-yet-structured combo system, and I always hoped that one day we'd see games that could give us characters like that rendered in real-time. And what do you know- we did!

  • @MattSipka

My uncle got a snes and had street fighter 2, mortal kombat 3 and a black KI cartridge. I can’t remember when Max said it but he mentioned in terms of the character roster, he felt like KI did what MK wanted to, but better.

    “Max approved dope ass game”
    YES, YES IT IS MAXIMILIAN.
I remember one time that, in the Hobby Shop that I used to go to play YuGiOh and such, one person brought their SNES to the shop with KI.
Understand, this was almost 20 years after the SNES era! Seeing a working SNES was rare! So all on the shop started playing!
I WIPED THE FLOOR ON EVERYONE!!!! I was a monster with Fulgore!! I still remembered how to play the character, even after all these years!!
I finished the final fight I played with a FATALITY!! The shop exploded with HYPE!!!
    It’s something I’ll never forget…..

I love the Killer Instinct games, with KI 2013 being my favorite. I'm terrible at doing flashy combos like every one else, but that never stopped me from playing the game. One if my fondest memories was playing at my friend's house while we're all trying to figure out how to do Ultra Combooooos!! For me, it was listening to that awesome soundtrack!

Not sure if you'll see this. But believe it or not, the first "fighting game" that made me into the FGC junky I am now is because of Melee. Back when I was 9, kids at the Boys and Girls club all played it on the GameCube, but there were 4 kids around my age who were friends and would keep ganging up on anyone who tried to play. So it made me determined to keep playing and beat them whenever I had the chance in line lol. I got good, REALLY good for a kid my age to the point that they would Target me only whenever it was my turn haha. Just a bit of story myself so you're not alone when it came to mopping the arcade floors lol

Still to this day KI is my favorite game of all time. I have my mom to thank for introducing it to me all those years ago as a little kid. I always enjoyed playing the snes and n64 over my ps2 at the time. Like I spent plus hours playing KI and KI2 trying to learn everything from linkers to shadow moves. I was cinder main in KI and Jago main in KI2 although it never stopped me from learning the other characters lol. I wish I could’ve played fulgore like a lot better than what I remember back then because he was such a bad ass. I still own my systems and play them every chance I get. But Im thankful you keep KI alive max. I’ve been a faithful subscriber since 2017 and I’ll continue to be for the years to come. SHINE ON!!!

The SNES version was the one that I got good at. I started with the arcade, but once this came home plus the combination of Xband online play really learned a lot. I learned overhead combo starters and jump kick in combo starters on this version. All the special starters and linkers I already had from the arcade. I started maining Jago, because you can start a combo by just hitting middle punch, middle punch then go into a linker or ender. No other characters have openers as fast or safe as that. It’s unfair. Without that his wind kick or sword swing openers are way too slow and punishable.

Way back when, I entered the Blockbuster Video Game championship. At the time, they had 2 age groups for 2 different games. For the Sega, they had a Primal Rage Tournament and for the SNES, they had the Donkey Kong Country Tournament Edition from Nintendo. I was either 9 or 10 at the time, and I entered the SNES youth bracket.
Now, the DKC tournament edition cart was created by Nintendo for the tournament, and was different than a regular version. First of all, it had a built in timer that stopped the game once the time was reached, and 2nd was that it lacked any overworld and just went from one randomized level to another. There was no order, so you had the know the game quite well.
The rules were simple, you had 2, 5 minute runs to complete as many stages as possible. After I registered for the tournament, I borrowed a copy of DKC from a friend and basically taught myself to speedrun it. I learned where every bonus game barrel was, how quickly I could fail the game and where in a level it would put me. I spend a good month learning everything I could about it.
I came first in the store, for both my age bracket and the adult bracket. As a prize, I got a framed certificate saying I won (I tossed it when we moved) and a gold Blockbuster card that gave me 2 free game rentals a month for a year. It's the only tournament I've entered.

When I play Fulgore, I like to spam eye laser. It catches jumpers and counters lots of other moves. It also is a combo starter as well. Then I mix it up with charging heavy into uppercut. Makes my fulgore super agile on the screen.

I was around 4 years old the first time I beat Eyedol with Cinder, and here I am now at 30 beating Eyedol with every character on the arcade version released on Xbox One. The arcade version looks and feels pretty sweet, but the original SNES copy I've owned for 26 years is still my preferred version. Damn time flies by.

the good ol' days of the 90s... pizza restaurants and their arcades, and gazillions of quarters... laughs....
(and also video game rentals too), either you rushed home from school to go to a pizza restaurant to play the arcades or to a rental store to get the game you want before others
(as a young teen, I always played orchid doing her "flash-tality", but only when no adults/parents was around at the pizza restaurants, laughs, surprised they had KI with this as a finisher in it at pizza restaurants, but probably the parents didn't know of it, we kids/teens weren't stupid, knew not to do it in front of them, lol)
(and loved the arcade victory "bouncing" and "bottom bopping with her tantas/weapons" pose/screen of orchid, laughs)
(same with dark stalkers, always played morrigan for same "reasons"... though loved raptor a lot too, really a cool character)
MK was no big deal... americans don't care about violence at all... just no "naughty stuff"... sighs... at least back in the day... it was like this... meh
    ---------
SF2 (I was so excited, buying this for fkn $60 for the SNES when it came out, it was such a big deal at the time, as a fighting game, lol, and this isn't the later 'turbo' edition either, the original SF2, lol, I was really stupid, lol)
    KoF
    Samurai Shodown (SS)
    MK
    KI
    virtua fighter
    tekken
primal rage (PR) (this was such a good fighting game, probably my most favorite of all)
    darkstalkers (DS)
weapon lord (SNES, very obscure, but it was funny as you could infinitely juggle someone in the corner by simply hitting them in the air, as a teen it was funny to see like a 1,000 combo display, lol, how long could you go before muscle fatigue set in, lol)
    soul caliber (SC)
    marvel vs capcom
    marvel vs snk (maybe)
    marvel super heroes (I think)
VS (yes, 'VS' is the game's name, lol, PS1 game, extremely obscure, my sister got some games from company she worked for or helped, and gave them to me, it's actually quite a good game, tekken style combat play)
SF3: 3rd Strike (loved watching pro matches, really loved the combos and strat, though wished it had more diverse characters, as it has too many similar combat-style characters)
    clay fighter (CF)
and probably a lot more that I'm missing... meh....

I didn't play fighting games properly until the PS1. Before that KI was literally the only fighting game I liked. My friends and I learned everything in the game except for Ultimates which I didn't know existed until I accidentally did one something like 15 years later lol

Still amazing how good max is at KI. As a casual player myself I can only dream of being this good.

Remember that black SNES cartridge. Got my butt whooped by my big brother but got better by it. Going to friends houses and whooping their butts made me feel better then they learned from me and eventually got some competition. Good times with this fighting game.

My first ever fighting game was KI on the game boy color, played Glacious because of his puddle teleport and it was so cool seeing that when I was 5-7. Might just have to give KI on Xbox a go and look for a game color and the KI for it.

When you body kids in a Toys R' US with controls that were not set properly when this came out - on monitors we broke our necks to look up at, you aren't old school enough.

oh yeah I fondly remember picking up KI on SNES, to our surprised we found the 'killer cuts' disc tucked away inside! its in storage somewhere but yeah that one definitely got a ton of playtime, especially 'the instinct' I mean the game starts up and you hear THAT and it just starts building to something fucking amazing?! yeah that whole soundtrack though! I used to be half decent with b. orchid but that was a million years ago so I've definitely gotten rusty. might need to replace my copy at some point soon, for sure!

Ah yes, I got the Ki SNES bundle (first game I played on the console) sadly the cd got stolen but I still have the Black Cartridge. This game took away my wrists (I played a lot in house and in some local "tournaments" but wouldn't change one bit about that, one of the classic SNES games of all time
