16:48 I never understood the notion of SF3 being “full of freaks”. Oro’s design looks not much different than Dhalsim, and is Necro any more inhuman and monstrous than Blanka? Every other character featured on screen fits in a fighting game (ninja, boxer, wrestler, Kung-Fu fighter, and three shotos…typical Street Fighter roster). Gill’s look is solely meant to show off how CPS-3 could handle an asymmetrical design, unlike Sagat and Vega in SF2 (but pay no attention to Oro’s tied arm switching sides).

The problem is the fans are afraid of new. Thats why we get less & less new fighters. I like that 4 brought back the additional 4 new characters like SSF2. No matter how much you hate SF5, you cant deny s2 DLC was a great role out for the new characters. Though most werent necesarily "new" they did open the door for growth. & aside from necalli, all new characters made an impact game & story wise.

I would say that Garou mark of wolves was an exception for some reason as most of the character were well liked such as Rock, Tizoc, Hotaru, Gato and B.Jenet. unlike in SF3 that they character only were well loved due to EVO and mostly as fighters than characters.

Both Capcom and the SF community's biggest fear is change. For the community, it's fear of another massive failure, one that could cause one of their biggest franchises to go dark. For Capcom, it's wanting to recapture that magic and success of SF2. A lot of people are split on this: a lot of people want the series to move on. "We want more new characters, we want a game set after SFIII, etc etc". The rest want more of the same: "we want to stay where we are, we want to see old faces again, etc etc."
I totally understand the scenario, and everyone has a point. But look at just SFV: look at all the brand new characters (Rashid, Falke, Menat, etc-especially Luke, the next Alex). They're all cool, even the less popular ones like Abigail or Ed. Alongside them we have our old favorites: not just the big 3 (Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li) but also Alex, Balrog, Ibuki, Juri, etc. It's possible to have both new and old, and make everyone happy. It's difficult, but possible.

    • @lukejones7164

@@nebiyuesayas5600 All Fighting Game communities and companies are afraid of change. For example, KoF 15 has only 2 new characters in its base roster of 39.
To have the right balance, SF6 should have a base roster of 30 characters: 23 veterans and 7 newcomers, and 11 out of the 23 veterans should be ones that didn't make to SF5, like Makoto, Fei Long, etc.
Also, the story of SF6 should take place at least 2 years after 3rd Strike with a brand new main antagonist that has nothing to do with Shadowloo, S.I.N., the Illuminati nor the Evil Hadou (G would make a great main villain).

Another game content producer, Top Hat Gaming Man, was roasted by viewers for saying similar of the game’s financial problems and negative fan reactions, requiring him to produce another video to essentially prove his findings correct. The FGC scene, while providing the game a well-deserved second chance at popularity, sometimes has rose-colored glasses of a game’s true history and reception.

Street Fighter 3 has to have had the worst arcade cabinet ever. I still remember seeing Street Fighter 3 for the first time, didn’t know it had come out, was at an airport with my parents waiting on some people, and from far away I see this cabinet that doesn’t say Street Fighter, and isn’t showing any previous Street Fighter characters. I’m looking at this thing, walking through the airport, and I’m like: Is that a new Street Fighter? But it took a while to tell it was a new Street Fighter became someone got the bright idea to just put 3 on the cabinet...it was in the SF2 font, but then anyone can use that font too.
Also, like no place I went to normally had a Street Fighter 3 cabinet. I think the only two place I ever saw it (when it was new) was that airport (and I didn’t get to play it) and the Casa Bonita we almost never went to.

I was never in Brooklyn...but I’ve got to imagine everywhere in America had a good sized arcade scene. Arcade cabinets in general were totally ubiquitous. There were arcades everywhere. Malls usually had at least one arcade. But you also could go to the movies and the theatre would have a little arcade, and then just in the halls of the bigger ones there’d be different arcade cabinets. Pizza places usually had a few machines set up. The first time I ever saw War Gods was some little gas station. I got into KoF because that was one of the machines they had at the college my mom worked at. I lived in a pretty small town, but during middle school and some of high school we had a little arcade in the break area.

I didn't bother with any of the new characters; stuck with Ryu and Ken. The "Shin Shoryuken" Super Art absolutely captured my imagination. I just loved everything about it. They originally weren't going to put Ken and Ryu in Three. I remember that because it was also in an interview about the game in EGM (I think). It's one of the reasons why Alex is positioned as the main character for the Three saga, and not the Shoto duo.

I know we say that Third Strike has had a renaissance, and I don't disagree that that happened. But, I wonder... even now, what are the sales like compared to other entries in the SF series? I'd argue that Third Strike EVEN NOW has an appeal to the competitive online community, but lacks appeal to casuals, and therefore probably has an order of magnitude less sales, even with the bump from its refurbished image. I think that refurbished image took place in a little bit of an echo chamber.

The American arcade dying by 1997 has to be that Capcom guy misremembering things and getting dates confused, because arcades were still all over the place in '97. I think every Pizza Hut you could go into still had a arcade section in '97. I know movie theatres were still loaded with arcade games (I remember playing SpikeOut in my mall’s little movie theatre around when Phantom Menace was coming out) in like 2000 and 2001. It wasn’t until like 2003 or 2004 that arcades started dying; they went fast once it started, but that was also half a decade after the first Street Fighter 3. Hell, you could still find normal gas stations with arcade games in '97.
