  • Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is a serious mental health condition that can include symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and additional symptoms. CPTSD can be caused by long-term or recurring traumatic events, such as childhood abuse or neglect.
    Symptoms of CPTSD include:
    * Emotional difficulties: Difficulty controlling emotions, intense emotions, inappropriate emotions, and trouble feeling happy
    * Behavioral difficulties: Impulsivity, aggressiveness, self-destructive behavior, and sleep problems
    * Cognitive difficulties: Dissociation, impaired memory, and pathological changes in personal identity
    * Interpersonal difficulties: Relationship problems, trouble keeping friends and partners, and difficulty trusting others
    * Somatization: Increased medical problems or many visits to medical practitioners
    Other symptoms include:
    * Flashbacks
    * Avoidance and detachment from people, events, and environmental triggers of the trauma
    * Hypervigilance
    * Frequent negative thoughts and emotions
    * Affective dysregulation
    * Negative sense of self
    * Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt, and failure
    * Feeling as if you are permanently damaged or worthless
    * Feeling as if you are completely different to other people
    * Feeling like nobody can understand what happened to you
    CPTSD can be treated with psychotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, or medication. For many people, CPTSD is a lifelong condition that can take some time to treat.
