      @superbura9 superbura9 Hello again, mutual respect for history, culture and traditions is what matters here. Forging historical facts does not.

    • @awkwardowl8835
      @awkwardowl8835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Josip Croatia could have done what Slovenia did, without lives being sacrificed. The problem is that Croatia is much more ethnically diverse than Slovenia and much less tolerant to that fact. It preferred to forge history and cultural heritage (like our common language) in order to establish an independent country - which wasn't necessary and it led to the civil war. During that war Croatia has expelled at least 250 000 Serbs from Krajina only (historical Military Frontier of the Habsburg Monarchy where they have lived for 400 years), which than found refuge in Serbia, that didn't have any infrastructure to support them. Croatia was supporting invasive Bulgaro-Turkish IMRO in today's North Macedonia territory during the Kingdom of Yugoslavia as it does today and it supports Albanian separatists in Kosovo, too. It denies existence and cultural continuity of any other nation in Dalmatia and Istria, in spite of clear historical facts. The list goes on... what was that about reparation? Aren't you overpaid already for ruining Serbia?

    • @awkwardowl8835
      @awkwardowl8835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @superbura9 superbura9 Sure - we benefited greatly from Croatian Tito, butting into Serbian Royal Court or Croatian Stipe Suvar's school reform in 1980, that introduced Marxism as obligatory subject in all schools of EX- Yu. As in you didn't need for example Economics to run a private architectural office, but - according to Mr. Suvar - Marxism! Genius. It isn't surprising that Croatians strongly oppose any mention of historical facts or continuity because they don't have much to be proud of in this light. By the way, Turkey (which funded IMRO and its program of "unifying" Balkan currently ruling in North Macedonia) has just occupied Famagusta, Cyprus. Today. Cheers to EU.

    • @awkwardowl8835
      @awkwardowl8835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Josip Since when is comrade : )) Cosic the Father of Serbian nation? He was just an unfortunate writer and definitely not among the best. I wouldn't rely on political nor ethical competence of a mediocre but ambitious communist writer, aspiring to be a President. But it's the crowd that chooses - that's democracy : ( Do you consider Tito the Father of Croatian nation? (This is in your favor - albeit a communist, he was a way better politician, navigated between the opposed blocks, dissed USSR , ceased animosities between our nations for a while and definitely working in Croatian favor by helping to ethnically "clean" Lika from Serbs.) I bet not. Equally, I'm Serbian but that maniac is definitely not my "father". The man was delusional - in 2011. he tripped that he won the Nobel Prize for literature : ))) after proving his political brilliance.

    • @awkwardowl8835
      @awkwardowl8835 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or Ante Kovacic with "In the Registrar's Office" ? ("U Registraturi". Also in your favor, because Kovacic was a great writer, albeit not speaking in favor of Croatian conformist servile mentality).

    • @ronik24
      @ronik24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, Serbia is current on the travel warning list of several states.
      That is not "criticism" and no "shaming". It is a warning from any travel into that country with legal consequences in case something should happen. For example, your employer can lawfully fire you if you have any troubles getting back to work after travelling to such an area.
      This is not a joke, it can ruin your life. So, apart from being in solidarity and protecting other people as much as possible, this is a severe matter.

But Zemun was not built by Austro-Hungarians. Zemun was built by Old Slavs long before AH empire at XII century and there was found remnants of material culture from period between 3500-4000 B.C. As beautiful as Novi Sad really is, it is just as any other central European little town....if you see one you have seen them all basically. Belgrade on the other hand is quite unique in its mixture of cultures. It is literally a gateway between east and west and it shows. As robust, crude and sometimes even ugly, it has that little something i am afraid Novi Sad lacks to make it exciting. At least to me. :)

    I understand totally after reading the comments why you turned them off! Every other reply is about B&B which I know your were aware off...
    Some countries depend on tourism and there will be no tourist infrastructure left if we all wait another year or whenever people decide it’s ok... if the governments are asking tourists to come then that’s the only advice you need right now. You are def better off where you are than in the USA... your being responsible so I don’t know what people expect, that we all live in a box for the next couple of years.. people arguing with each other would drive me nuts also, and you have the decency to actually read and reply to people’s comments a lot , I’ve noticed that , and it’s hard to constantly get bashed when your not doing anything wrong , no more than a local would be doing where you are... good luck to you

There is big wine festival at the end of the summer there. Subotica is beautiful city on the north, near Hungarian border. Such a lovely video, Gabriel :) I was born and raised in the very center of the city, Kalemegdan was literally my playground, so wherever you passed on your walk is meaningful and dear to me. Even the new Belgrade and Zemun parts, my parents got married in Jugoslavija hotel - it used to be very famous and posh - and my grandmother lived very near Danube quay of Zemun. So much more to see even in the center of the city, let alone further afield and in Serbia in general. Great idea to rent a car and go around it, it's so much diversity - from northernmost parts that feel like Hungary and Austria still, to southern that have much more of the oriental feel, due to history of course. And many more fortresses, mountains and ancient sites in between. But I think you'd enjoy mountains perhaps the most. That being said, I'm glad you flew out just in time not to get caught up in either corona or protests. Looking forward to you coming back in future. Enjoy Croatia! And stay safe.

    Oh, the wonderful memories of my visit to Belgrade last year this superb video brings back. I too visited the fortress and stood where you were talking to that guy looking at the views of the Sava and Danube rivers. By the way, if you look carefully about one second after you started filming out of the bus window, you will see a small building flash by on the bridge- this is a lift that goes down to the path besides the Sava and it is where I commenced a walk along the rivers. Having read your pinned comment, I think you made the right move in leaving Belgrade which is a bit of a shame. As you're in Croatia, try and get to its capital, Zagreb- I also had a great time there last year! By the way, large demonstrations are common in Belgrade, apoarently there were weekly demonstrations against the President occurring when I visited in the spring if 2019, although I didn't see any.

    The man around 19:00 states that in before WW2 (Actually WW1) Zemun was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire whereas the central area of Belgrade was part of Serbia. In fact, from where you are standing at this point, you are close to the site of the first battle of WW1:
    On 28 July 1914, the same day that Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Austro-Hungarian naval ships shelled the Kalemegdan fortress from the Danube River. This took place one month after the Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, and weeks before the more well-known fighting on the Western Front began.
    Zemun, being a former part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically the Hungarian portion, is architecturally similar to the cities of Vojvodina in Northern Serbia such as Novi Sad and Subotica, or other cities in Central and Eastern Europe that were once part of Hungary. The tower that you visit around 38:00 is known as the "Millennium Tower" and was built in 1896 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Hungarian settlement within the Pannonian Basin region.

Despite the fact I've traveled a lot and been to the Balkans before, I knew nothing about Belgrade and what there was to see there. Fortunately I learned a bit about its importance and some of the significant history of the city and of Serbia during my week in the city.
