  • I visited Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, and met up with some friends. We visited an Island in the Danube, explored the Serbian nightlife, and I even bought a deck of 'Most Wanted Cards'.
    There are great people all over the world and I hope these videos of the Balkans make a few people come here and experience these beautiful countries!

    The only genocide in Bosnia was against Serbs. Three times in one century. Everything else is crocodile tears.

    Geographically very slightly off-piste but relevant - I spent a few days in Sarajevo in 2023 and found it one of the most intriguing places I've been to yet. Did all the usual 'touristy' things including Mostar bridge, Kravica waterfall, Počitelj etc and met some pretty wonderful people. You learn a lot from a tour guide on an 8 hour minibus journey especially when you mention Tito in a passing comment without truly understanding how he fits into the story in this part of the world. Always been intrigued by this part of the world but it was completely by chance that I recently met my girlfriend who happens to be a Bosnian Serb now living in Norfolk. She was in Sarajevo during the war and worked as a translator for the British Army and I when I listen to her experiences from that time it takes me back to that minibus tour but with a newfound appreciation of what it must be like to live through conflict and chaos. Great videos BL, keep it up.

    Actually, the Kalemegdan fortress or fortress is an extremely old place, entire underground cities are located in the tunnels under the fortress, which means that many civilizations built there. I live not far from Belgrade and this place always haunts my mind. A very interesting rabbit hole.

    Btw Mihailo Obrenovic the guy on the horse in the middle of the town, didn't just build stuff around he was also a Prince of Serbia at the time. Prince Mihailo's greatest achievement was achieving a complete withdrawal of Turkish troops from Serbia in 1862.

    The Second World War had more heinous crimes than the 1990s because the Independent Satellite State of Croatia got rid of 1/3 of Croatian Serbs, converted the other one-third to Uniates (like the Roman Catholics did in Western Ukraine) and sent one-third to Jasenovac camps for Serbs (where 700,000 perished, conservative figure), Jews (28,000 victims, conservative figure) and Roma (80,000 victims, conservative figure). After the war, Tito (being a Croat and Slovene) did not prosecute seriously the Croatian and Slovene crimes. The Serbs who fought on the side of the Old Order
    (God, Country and King) had to flee to the West.

    Russians in Serbia do not have the right to feel other than being at home. Among my first memories, when I was a kid watching partisan movie, I didn`t understand what they were saying, and mom explained to me that there are people like us, who are called Russians, and that we, Serbs, exist thanx to them. My grand-grandpa, who fought WWI, later told me why Russian Tsar is Serbian saint. There are only two types of Serbs those who believe Serbs and Russian are brothers, and those who believe that Serbs and Russians are one and the same. Other types are not considered Serbs by these two types of genuine Serbs.

    The meaning of the banner is about WW1 (56% of Serbian men died in a war), WW2 (ustashe genocide) and Balkan wars (almost all Serbs cleansed from Croatia and Muslim-Croat part of Bosnia). Compare 16% of Muslims in Serbian part and 4% of Serbs in Muslim-Croat part). For every Serb, at least those employing their brain, Srebrenica war crime is a politicised and overblown event misused for political objectives of Western Powers/NATO (a side in a conflict). That's the context of the banner, and all truthful. Of course, an Englishman didn't hear any of it, he heard only the NATO interventional version of events.

    West Balkan (and Balkan in general) is very complicated place - politically and historically. It is continuing to be complicated politically , because elites (trough media) constantly reheating old griefs , hate and other negative things , which has sole purpose to keep them in power (while masses antagonize each other - division is a beautiful thing , when you are a ruler). Of course , major "powers" in Europe (+ USA) benefit from those tensions. Governments in Balkan are ALL on a globalist (WEF) band wagon , no matter what they are talking publicly . Some people fall for the narrative , others do not. The truth is - we are , mostly , south Slavs and (except Slovenians and Macedonians) we speak the same language (different dialects). There are minorities (I mean non Slavic) .
    Princ Michael (knez Mihajlo Obrenović) , the man on the horse (monument) in front of national museum and across the street from national theater , was ruler of Serbia in two occasions . He built these institutions (before mentioned) and he took over the Belgrade from the Ottomans after some incident (after which the Ottomans bombed the city from the fortress). There is a Wikipedia page about him.
    Girl in the video tried to explain some things about the Nemanjić dynasty (Rastko Nemanjić - St. Sava) , but the facts were wrong (I believe that she mixed up things). He lived in 12th and 13th century and he was a prince , but he chose to engage in diplomacy and church. He was first Serbian Archbishop , and he gained independence for , what is now known as Serbian Orthodox Church and king's crown for his brother Stefan (from Roman Pope) - by which he made Serbia a kingdom and mostly independent (still under the Byzantine influence). He died in Hilandar (where he and his father built some monasteries) and the temple of St. Sava was built in a place , where Ottomans burned his remains , after Serbian rebellion in 17th century (there were a lot of rebellions here). The temple is built to look like St Sofia in Istanbul and it is one of the largest orthodox churches in the world (largest by volume) and it is not a monastery. You should visit it next time you come back (and you can record video in there). If you visit it - don't miss the crypt (stairs are near the entrance).
    External display of weapons in the fortress is a part of military museum permanent exhibition and the missiles exhibited are the same ones that shot down the F 117 B "nighthawk" - stealth bomber (invisible) , in NATO aggression of 1999. The only one that was shot down in the world , ever , and our anti air forces made excuses after that - they weren't aware that it was invisible... 😁
    The conclusion of the video can be applied to this whole region - Balkan is the black hole for talent , creativity and ideas . For the most part , talented people from these parts are recognized only after they leave and make it somewhere else , like Tesla , Pupin , Milanković (or the athletes - both lists are veeery long) ... I believe , that there is a historic reason for that kind of mentality (constant wars and struggles) , but that is for debate...
    I like your videos , because of "open" approach to places and people. Of course , you are young , but it is commendable that you didn't just gave in to western media propaganda and decided to check things out for yourself. Don't pay too much attention to hateful comments and keep up the good work.

    • @BritishLandeur
      @BritishLandeur  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The best comment I have ever received! You should be a tour guide!
      Politicians these days seem to be determined to create divides and stir up anger to keep themselves in a position of power. Very dangerous behaviour, you are right. Far better to try to seek peaceful resolutions and focus on improving the lives of your citizens.
      I bought the book that she was talking about, but I have not had time to read it yet. I hope to learn a lot more about the history of Serbia so that when I come back I will be more educated.
      I should have explored more of Serbia, but I really struggled with the heat. Some days it was almost 40 degrees centigrade - in the UK we consider 30 degrees extreme heat. This made it kind of difficult to be motivated to go and see more, but I did spend just under four weeks in Serbia just speaking to Serbs and enjoying this beautiful country.

    • @pedjamilosavljevic6235
      @pedjamilosavljevic6235 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BritishLandeur You aren't the first one who suggested to me to become a tour guide , or a history teacher 😃 But , I'm over 50 and I hate to walk in the heat ... Seriously , things I know about history and general culture are consequence of my early education in Yugoslavia - education system and great teachers (though , I'm trained in machine science , being maker most of my life) . From that time and considering the turmoils that we went trough - I've kept inquisitive and analytical mind and , in general , most of us (relatively educated , middle aged people , from around these lands) can "smell" BS propaganda from far away. Though , there is a lot of tribalism too .
      Best time of year to visit these parts is end of April and trough May (hopefully , the weather should be as it used to be - sunny and not too hot). If I may - I suggest to dedicate more time in order to see more stuff and meet more people and to find a "base" from where you can go places. If you find sponsors for your videos - it'll be easily financially viable .
      I wish you happy and safe travels.

      It's true, I don't know the full and very complex history of the Balkans, so I don't make my own comments or express my own opinions, only talk about what some graffiti means.

      Don't worry, I have met enough Serbs now to know that Serbian people are proud but kind and welcoming to visitors. I am just genuinely curious how I seem to annoy everyone in these videos, haha!
