    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shaunontheinternet1452 Steel will never, never rust if it is never exposed to water or oxygen. Body filler compound and primer paints do not create a sufficient barrier against moisture or oxygen. Too many people finish the repair to the primer level and fail to apply paint (colour coat) and clear coat on the same day. Seal it and it will not rust until the barrier is once again breached.

    Yeah I bet those repairs lasted. Rust converter is snake oil.

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rust converter is an excellent product but must be used properly. The first step is to grind, sand our cut out every spec of rust that is visible to the naked eye. Apply the first coat of rust converter and within 15 minutes to an hour the iron oxide (rust) particles that remain behind will turn black (to ferric phosphate) and appear visible. Now re-sand the surface of the panel, leaving behind the specs of black converted rust, that are now visible. Next, use a Dremel tool with a precision grinding bit and go after all of the remaining specs of black, just as a dentist removes your tiny cavities. When satisfied, apply a second coat of rust inhibitor and allow it to dry and convert for an hour. Then apply the third coat of rust inhibitor and allow it to fully dry, convert and cure for 24 hours. Now you can proceed with 2 coats of primer, the colour coat and the clear coat ON THE SAME DAY. Ferric phosphate (the converted rust) will never re-rust....it's chemically impossible. The only thing that can rust is the virgin metal under your repair and only if water moisture and oxygen can reach the metal. If the repair does not last at least 10 years, either all the rust was not removed or converted, or (common problem) the rear side of the panel was not treated equally, or the paint and clear coat barrier has been breached.

    • @Imp5011
      @Imp5011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisgraham2904 So if you comprehensively remove all the rust by grinding and sanding then the rust converter works okay? Well it would if you've already removed the rust by another method. But thanks for repeating what sounds like the marketing blurb off the back of the box.

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Imp5011 LOL I don't work for, or hold stock in rust converter. I've had great success with the product. My 1999 GMC Safari van developed rust in 6 spots (the same spots that every van of that model rusts). I did the body work in 2009 and those spots have never re-rusted. Rust is automotive cancer and the only way to cure it is to surgically remove it. Rust converter is like the chemotherapy or radiation treatment after cancer surgery, just in case there are stray cancer cells lingering behind. As noted, many people don't use the rust converter properly and they fail to provide the appropriate barrier that prevents future rusting from happening.
