1700miles in a tiny speedboat - Part1

  • After months of restoring the old rigid inflatable speedboat we are attempting to go all the way around the UK. Circumnavigation is 1700 miles, which is a long way in a boat that's only 4m long.
We start in London and head along the River thames before heading South East and down towards Margate, Ramsgate and on to Dover and Eastbourne.
We stop to look at the wreckage of the SS Richard Montgomery, a sunken world war 2 ammunition ship. More on that here:
    en.wikipedia.o...
    More coming in part 2.

Not sure whether you left on the 2nd part already, but I advice to haul it out and check the bottom aswell. It WILL have sustained damage from beaching on a rocky beach. In general beaching is a very last resort, and even on a sandy beach you want to avoid it at all cost.
The problem with waves smashing over the side you will have with even no wind. there will always be waves near the coast, and you where lucky it was only this much.
You may think this went as bad as it could go, but get this from an experienced sailor, you where extremely lucky.
Tip for next time, do not trust the anchor. No matter how big or small the boat, none of us do trust it, no matter how small or big, all other boats have someone awake in shifts watching whether the boat moves.

I found out the hard way and the expensive way, going out on the ocean is a steep learning curve ,but it gets in your blood it hooked me 28 years ago ,when everything is going well it's just the best

    • @AlohaMilton
      @AlohaMilton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

yeah, have woken up to a dragging anchor and had to reset it in the middle of the night in strong offshore winds. Leaving the boat anchored, expecting the ocean to play nice with it while your gone, no knowledge of the local conditions and coastal currents. If they persist they are going to see a hell of a lot worse as they get out of the protected short fetch areas to exposed coastlines. I really do hope they dont die, from my experience working commercial sea urchin boats, around 28 foot and with internal foam flotation and fiberglass hulls specificly for working near shore waters safely, it is a very likely outcome that they feel 'safe' in sight of land, and die floating in water with waves all around them unable to even see which way land is. It happens, all the time, they have no idea what they are into here. I had a guy with 30 years experience teach me to pilot a small craft in rough weather, swam varsity and went to league championships, have rescued several people from drowning while surfing and just being 'that guy that is always at the beach or harbor' and nearby when those unfamiliar with the ocean were in trouble. I would not try this trip in that boat, if I had to I would expect it to take months for clear weather for sections, or accept I was risking my life in a boat and ocean not designed for each other where the boat simply may be overwhelmed by conditions that can arise in a minute or two. it really is just a horrible idea, that so many encourage it with no personal experience is just more signs that humanity is done, is rediculous, bent on its own destruction through showing off and talking sh!t without any real life experience or courage to actually accept what we dont know.

I am very sorry to have say this, but this guy here is so absolutely clueless about boating at all 😱
Kudos for the balls to try this adventure in the first place! But with this kind of seamanship, you can be happy if you (and your crew) survive it at all.
Speaking of beaching: not only that this really is a terrible idea in the first place - you also throttled forward until the motor hit the ground 😱
In 9.9 out of 10 cases, this will wreck an Propeller immediately!

Hey there.... Well, I am glad it all went relatively well, since you broke your toe and not your neck. Just a friendly advice here, from a fellow small-boater: When you approach a beach and you have long or high waves, you will never ever get to keep yourself dry if you approach it with your bow. Whatever you do, and I really mean WHATEVER you do, the next wave will hit your stern/side and it will flood it, then it gets really heavy and you know the rest. Try approaching by throwing the anchor for stability, then backing up as much as you can, then lifting the motor and finally letting the waves move your boat for the rest of the distance, while slowly letting some rope and thus controlling your speed, until you reach the point where your hull doesn't hit the sea bed. By doing this, your bow always faces the weather and it cuts through the waves, instead of letting them hit a perpendicular surface. Then you're on foot. You unload the boat, making it lighter, then you decide to bring it back deeper or finding a better approach to pull it into the beach while not having to worry about expensive equipment. If you want, I can draw it for you and send you the sketch. I know that this route is longer, but it is the safest. Believe me.

Installing a new prop takes about 2 minutes. Do yourself a favour and don't drive around with a broken prop - if you hit smth, trim the engine up ASAP as you might have damaged the axle as well. If you drive around with a bend axle - boom, your gearbox is wrecked. I've worked on boats a lot and these problems were very common but also very avoidable.
Anyways, have a nice trip mate 😀 cheers

Brilliant. I have a 6m speedboat that, about 10 years ago, I had a plan to sail, as a summer project, from the Thames to Greece via the Canal Du Midi. My wife dissuaded me for a raft of sensible reasons. Part of me regrets not doing it but, having been out in deep, rough waters with it quite a bit, most of me is very glad I didn't. Rough, noisy, sometimes terrifying, expensive, often deeply uncomfortable, wet and tiring. Hats off to you for giving it a go!

Oh my God! It excites me even more, seeing this video, thinking of the trip around Europe (around 7000 n.m.) that I intend to do next summer starting from Piraeus (in Greece) on board a 6 m, r.i.b.
Great job guys! Your r.i.b. is nothing less than an Avon I think. Maybe one of the best (if not the best) r.i.b. in the world, considering its size of course.

    • @JosephPapado

@@harrydwyer From any marina of the west coast of Attica. Maybe Anavyssos.
The boat is rather "big" for such a trip, I agree. I wanted to do it on a 4,99 m, rib but the manufacturer failed to supply me the rib in question. Therefore I did not have another choice. I have made long trips on board inflatable boats in the past, such as Piraeus- Inverness - Piraeus (1991) in order to participate in the Round of Scotland Rib Race, Piraeus - Gibraltar - Piraeus on board a 5,6 m. rib in 1986, the Round of the Azores on board a 5 m. Bombard rib in 1996 etc.

Hi Harry, was chatting to Rosie in Ecuador and she pointed me to this video. All I can say is wow! It’s wonderfully entertaining and I was totally hooked! Great to see Sam not overworking for a change! We have met before at Rosie’s Mum’s at Xmas (I’m Tom’s best mate Gaz). I’ve just started creating some content on TH-cam myself, can’t match your subs, amazing! 😂 Keep up the fantastic work, really looking forward to the rest of the trip! ☺️😘

A madcap adventure and one that is really nicely edited together with some smashing footage. Hope that we’re going to see the whole saga unfold to the same visual/storytelling quality as Part 1. A wee bit nostalgic for me, as our first boat was a 4m Sea Rider, almost identical to yours, but would never have dared to embark on this journey.. please keep them coming.

You could get a bunjie anchor system. Basically the anchor is on a long bunjie cord. After you've beached and unloaded the boat, you leave a long stern line attached to shore and motor out to your anchor point. Then you set anchor, and either your buddy or you pull yourself back in to shore to get off, the bunjied anchor will then pull the boat back out. This way you don't have to swim and you have a safety line attached to shore.
I think you're fine with beaching the boat, just pick Sandy shores, but always pull the motor up before you make landfall. Depending on how long you ran your motor on the damaged prop, you might have drive line issues, double check it before you go out. Also get a spare prop when you replace the broken one, always a good idea to have one onboard in case of situations like you just had.
Finally please consider wearing survival suits while youre in the skiff, especially in semi rough seas, hypothermia kills fast at your latitude, even faster the farther north you go, a survival suit will at least keep you alive till someone finds you. Plus they should be equipped with epirbs in case of emergency.
I think what you're doing is awesome but please take your safety more seriously, I want to see more videos from you

So... Day three, and you're close to DIW (Dead In the Water).
Inauspicious start! We can hope you planned your finances for such calamities as this-- shit happens on boats-- especially when you beach to camp rather than making for a civilized mooring. That seal may have been trying to tell you something!
LOL... Anyway, I think this is a fascinating endeavor, and I hope you press on and make the whole tour. And, hopefully, you won't beach the boat on a rocky shore again!
Best of luck! I WILL be following this!
