In a dramatic 12th round Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) took over the lead from Magnus Carlsen (Norway) at the FIDE World Chess Candidates' Tournament in London. The former World Champion beat Levon Aronian (Armenia) while Carlsen suffered his first loss against Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine). The other two games, between Boris Gelfand (Israel) and Peter Svidler (Russia) and Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan) and Alexander Grischuk (Russia), were drawn.

@@FBI-sq9ub Psychology is part of the game. The threatening style of Ivanchuk is a plus for him, but his own inability to perform under pressure is a minus, and overall, he's just worse. The result is the sole measure, no matter how 'genius' or entertaining his games might be. The same holds for any sport or more importantly, wars. You can do flashy and scary stuff all you want and maybe win a few battles, but you'd just loose overall. If you work in investment you'd know better. Ivanchuk is a high-risk high-reward player, but overall fails to outperform those who are more balanced. That's a matter of statistics and utility theory. That's chess. It's like a military battle. Strategies include managing your mental state. One who manages his mental state well would also not play in a high-risk fashion because it's just on average irrational. So it's kind of just how it is.

Ivanchuk had always been leading from the start of this game, kind of threw a bit in the middle, but still manageable, and played brilliantly towards the end...

One detail about the final position I think you might have included was what to do if Re1+. In that case the pawn is too far away for the king alone to escort it to the end because the rook can either keep giving check or attacking the pawn until the king hides behind it, so it can't be pushed. The solution after Re1+ is Kf2, which actually wins the rook, because if the rook moves you have mate in one. No time for pawn grabbing.
I notice many of Ivanchuck's surprise moves are pushing a pawn forward at an unexpected moment.
The way Chucky won, he dragged the champion up and down the mountain , tortured him and let him die with just a pawn up in the end.
Is that guy checking out someone's position, or just staring into empty space? It's Ivanchuk, therefore impossible to tell. agadmator is too funny!

there is a bit more to the analysis at the end if you are interested...@14:17 ... if Carlsen plays Re1 check, then Kf2, and after the rook moves away or captures with Rxe5...its Rh8 checkmate, as the king is guarding the g file escape squares...basically his rook is forced to stay on the f file to prevent Kf2...if the rook did not have this overhead task...then it would have been a much tougher task to convert (not impossible), but Carlsen would have certainly played on ...because upon Re1 the king would have had to retreat to defend the pawn

You should mention in the video the last move, I didn't see it all, where if you do RE1+, the king comes to f2 and threatens mate with Rh8, forcing the king to move and giving black the tempo he needs to play e4 and bring the pawn home.

In the final position, is it really Kd2 that is the idea? Because then the pawn is hanging after white played Re1+ first. I though the idea is Re1+ Kf2 and now if white takes the pawn, Rh8 is mate. What is the other plan behind Kd2 that I am missing?

You forgot to mention how pissed off Magnus Carlsen was after the game, accusing Ivanchuk of losing on time in most of his games and bringing his best when faced him. Magnus inability to lose gracefully and sense of entitlement was overblown. Smart but arrogant.
To be fair to Magnus. It's what's happened. But it's invanchuck nature. He's autistic, not slightly.
It's hard for him to afford full concentration and emotion management for all of a tournament.
His genius brain engine can beat one ou two World Champions in a row but doesn't have the stamina for a full set. So he concentrated for the most importants ones

Tbh, I expect most GMs would play like Ivanchuk... His playstyle is like a second nature to me, I could predict his intentions... This is my first time seeing him play and the only one that I enjoyed so far (TH-cam somehow recommended chess to me, so I started watching from like 4 days ago... I enjoy the game very much, but haven't played for a long time)... On the other hand, I've watched several current GMs playing each others, and I have to say, they don't play as I expect them to play 😂 not saying it's bad, but it'd say more loose moves here and there without a solid mega plan, if you know what I mean 🤧 then again I'm a nobody in chess, right 🙈😆... Maybe I'm also the autistic one like Ivanchuk 😐 lol

A better explanation in the end, magnus resigned in last position because if white plays Re1+ to stop black king from advancing since the white rook is x-raying the black pawn, black replies Kf2! threatning mate and threatning the rook!. ALways cool to explore all tactics in positions :D

Analysed the game with SF13 and NNUE on Lichess.
It says C6 indeed is a -0.3, basically a draw

A point of interest, and clarification, regarding Ivanchuk's comment, saying that Carlsen should have pushed his Pawn c5-c6, instead of moving Rook b6-h6:
When Stockfish 11 evaluates this position beyond depth 56, it says Black's best response to the Pawn Push would be valued at +2.76. On the other hand, it values Ivanchuk's in-game response to the Rook move with King f5-e4 at over +9.30.
So while pushing the pawn may not have been enough to equalize the position, Stockfish agrees with Ivanchuk that Pushing the Pawn in this case would have been a much stronger move for Carlsen than what he played over the board.
In any event, Stockfish finds other moves for White's Rook that are valued better than the Pawn Push. But not by much. At depth 57, Stockfish suggests Carlsen's best option would be Rook b6-b5, and values Ivanchuk's best option for response at only +1.75.
I love Chuky. I believe he play games as interesting as Nez did.

If white had gone Re2, would the position be saved? If black goes Rg8, then Rg2, blocking the straight so that the white king could pass through. If black trades, white can catch up to the king pawn endgame which results to a draw. If not, then idk

Sir. I had been constantly watching your channel. Nice analysis. But today observed subtitles of English for English commentary. It may be useful before analysing the game I think but not after start of game because it obstruct 2 row of square ie 16 out of 64 which makes tuff to follow the game . If possible can be avoided.

3:50 -- Here Ivanchuk played 18..a5 the pivotal moment in the game. Here Carlsen thought this was weakening the queenside a bit too much (an evaluation that the engines apparently agree with), and decided to play for a win. _How_ does one see this?? That's definitely beyond my chess understanding.

This is refreshing! I see my play is similar to Chucky’s I do these weird moves that throw off my opponent. Even the engines don’t see it. This guy gave all the grandmasters problems. 👍 Need to study this guys strategies more, but really it’s instinct. Some play like Kasparov, others play like Fischer, different minds
When everything as planbed, Ivanchuk hardly to win this game. But once everything become unpredicted, he would push and force his opponent to fall into his traps. Beautiful.

Ivanchuk's playstyle is just beautiful... It's the style that I expect most GMs would be... But I only see it in him, from this single game, despite watching countless GMs encounters...

When I analyzed the position shown at 11:57 with SF9, it shows that if white pushes c6 (as Ivanchuk guessed) white can force a draw.
why at 3:08 did black not capture the knight on b3. It seems like magnus has to capture with the c pawn, not only creating a doubled pawn but also weakening the king's position.

He did not capture on b3 at 3:08 because white can respond with a3 instead of recapturing. This creates a double attack on the knight and bishop (which is optimally placed). Regardless, either tactic would still result in doubled-pawns. With all the same, it is better to add pressure to the pin on the queen, forcing her to move. After which, you can still create the aforementioned doubled-pawns.

It's white's move and after a check king to e2 would be a blunder if I am not missing anything.
The real threat is that f2 after check because white cannot capture the pawn since in this case he is getting checkmated.

After White plays Re1+, Kd4 to protect the pawn. Then Rd1+, Ke4, Re1+, Kd5, Rd1+, Ke6, Re1, Black can play Rg5, then Kh3, Kf5, Rf1+, Ke4, Re1+, Kf3, Rf1+, Ke2. Now Kh4 results in Rg8 and Black can push the pawn.
After Kf3 the black king will attack the white rook which results in complications.
I think after White plays Re1+, Kd4 is not a good answer.
Good point. In that case, the line after Ke6, Re1 would be Rg4, Kh3, Kf5, Rf1+, Rf4, Re1, e4. Then, put the rook on f8, bring the king back around, and you'll be close enough to guard the 1st rank.
EDIT: Kd4, Rd1+, Ke3, Re1+, Kd3, Rd1+, Ke2 gets to the 2nd rank. Promoting the pawn will force an exchange with the rook, and K+R can checkmate.
Actually the final position would be drawn if it was a normal position, because white has a defence of frontal attack of the king and a pawn, checking the king from the 1st rank. It would work if we removed the position for 1 file to the left. But exactly in this position this defence doesn't work because of the mate threat with Kf2!

edit: i think i saw why: if queen captures, dark bishop to f4, forcing the queen to either f5 or h5. Then push the pawn to g4, queen has to retreat to g6, then light bishop to d3, forcing Ivanchuk to sacrifice his knight by blocking the bishop in order to save the queen.
