Just went here too, before an event at Dodger Stadium. The sandwich was FANTASTIC, but unfortunately they are also very small especially if eating it by itself.
I first went to Phillipe's in the fifties with my dad who was a policeman on the LAPD. It was much smaller then and didn't have the extra dining area. I still drop in for a "wet" beef sandwich when I'm in LA. Such wonderful memories of my dad.
It's been about five years since I visited LA and went to Philippe's. I noticed in the video they now have new updated registers. It used to be cash only.
Eating a Phillipe's beef single dip with hot mustard, mac salad and extra dill pickles as I watch this. Takeout only nowadays due to the holiday C19 spike in LA/CA. Other LA epic sandwiches are Langer's Deli's Pastrami #19 and Giamela's Italian Beef Pepper Steak. 3:00 Phillipe's survived the 1918 Spanish Flu and will survive the 2020 C-19 pandemic. Vive le French Dip!
Went on your recommendation. It was sub par. Very friendly but the product did not live up to the hype. Nice to say “we went” but will not be going back. Had the pork, the lamb, the beef. Sides, beer. Nostalgic but that’s about it outside of really friendly.
I knew about how the sandwich was created, but not from WHERE. Never imagined it would be from an LA restaurant! I am determined to visit and try it out from the birth place!
if you ever in LA stop by everyone comes everyone is happy to be in the place if you think LA is hard everyone is so happy in this place i love it been going since i was a kid
They are so good. Most restaurants can do a good version of it. I've never had the original but a run of the mill French Dip at a local institution is almost always good.
@@mastod0n1 Ate at Philippe’s a couple of years ago and had it dipped. Not above and beyond a good one from another place. What set it apart for me was the spicy mustard.
@@latinolawdog5067 What counts besides arithmetic is the fact that French families at a particular point in US food history developed these recipes; and they took off as icons that are still enjoyed to this day. I will leave it at that.
Actually, the story of the sandwiches inception are that an LAPD officer named French ordered a roast beef sandwich from Cole's Sandwiches on 6th and Broadway, and the bread was dropped in the beef juices but the officer being in a hurry requested to take the sandwich as is, them returned the next day to order the same. The truth may never be known
There was another contender in Long Beach I grew up with. French Dip is still my favorite sandwich, but I don't think the original was from LA. It was from LB.
This place is very delicious I really also love the vintage ambiance with the wooden stools and booths, the sawdust floors, the old phone booths, and the candy counter
I heard that there once was an old man that didn’t have any teeth and requested that the bread be dipped so it can be soft enough for him. Hence the sandwich
Had I gone to France after learning about this sandwich but before learning its true origins, it would have been one of the things I would have ordered. An authentic French Dip with a proper order of French Fries. Just ignore me...I'm an American. ;)
I think the story about the cop’s bread being dropped in the broth by accident is a fictional account contrived as publicity stunt. The creator was well aware of similar broth soaked bread sandwiches sold in Europe and other parts of the country.

All this time I thought we're supposed to dip it like nuggets, not dip the whole bread.
There is no wrong way to eat a french dip
I like to dip mine as I go so my hands don't get all messy.
Omg idky this made me laugh
If it's dipped it's dipped
If you dip it sideways, it becomes an Asian Dip.
@2:50 could have been the whole video. Literally.
I’ve been to LA a few times for work. The only thing I miss is that damn sandwich.
0:22 I thought he hit the other car and had to edit it out 😂
Jackson Walter most definitely did💀
I thought the same thing.
The host and his friend have that natural-funny sense. I like it
I honestly love this place, go every couple of weeks and practically order everything too lol
I am full and this still looks good!

Phillipe's incredible mustard is to die for. ❤ Add too much to a sandwich and you just might . . . 🤣🤣🤣

Very conveniently located just a block or two from Union Station. I used to take the Metro-Link in from the suburbs just to eat here.

No, a vegan's worst nightmare is to be part of animal cruelty.
Interesting. I had no idea that the so-called "French Dip" sandwich is an American invention, let alone a West-Coast one!
If it came from an immigrant French family let it be Phellipe‘s or Boudin‘s in San Francisco, then it counts as French influenced in the US.

Here in the Northwest the sandwich comes dry with a cup of au jus on the side for you to dip as you eat it. I never heard of the bun being pre-dipped.
