Always felt this album was Marrs crowning glory, The production, melody's and musicality is really off the chain. Always tell everyone ignore Morrissey on this album as he is seriously just dialling it in and listen to how amazing the music is. Feels like the vocal lines and lyrics are disjointed next to the music and story goes that Morrissey had already spiritually if not yet physically left and it shows all through the album. Still my favourite Smiths album sorely because of the music.
A nice analysis, but I'd like to add that Morrissey's disheartened and separated tone throughout Strangeways somehow leant a slightly more morose and melancholy feel that for me somehow fully made the album beautiful and great. I'm not sure the album could've been any stronger and if his vocals were any stronger, I'm not sure it would've been the cherished final Smiths record it became.
@@jasonegeland1446 I agree the tension between the two made the album a lot better, but I consider it the result of Marr having to do everything to the level of a near breakdown.
@@agghjjhgdhvfgjngggh2381 There's certainly some merit to that, I agree. Marr is an absolute wizard with his Fender Strat (to this day) and coupled with Morrissey's foreboding lyrics (with a small hint of hopefulness), it would've turned out unique regardless. The Smiths were the perfect band at the perfect time, at least for their true fans.
Yeah, sometimes you just have to let the lyrics go with some songs and just enjoy the show. Morrisey is a genius. His solo music goes deeper into his talent. One of a kind artist.
From what I gather, it seems he supposedly lies to a female about something consequential; and as a result some dudes beat the piss out of him. Embittered, he goes to a pub and get's sloshed lol. A cheery tale, as apropos from Morrissey! This one's not as much about the lyrics for me, though there is some clever phrasing. Instrumentation and vocals on point ✌
I dont think u will like Morrisseys voice and lyrics. Johnny marrs riffs are brilliant. one the best guitar players ever imo. But The Smith's have nice enjoyable melodies and songs. The ironic part is the happy feeling of the music for the most part but the dire and sullen lyrics and vocal of Morrissey. They indeed have some great songs. And for a 7 year run they were one of 1980s most original band and their impact is still not fully felt. They inspired so many. Morrisseys voice somehow fits brilliant for the music
Good one, but I'm not falling for this one :)... you know the original is the best and are just trying to get a reaction. Perfection is perfection, with Morrissey on vocals and Marr on strings... it just doesn't get any better.
@@kJ922-h3j - My apologies. I mistook your statement for being facetious. I've never heard the cover (I think), but will take a listen with an open mind. Best day to you.
"And the pain was enough to make a shy bald Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder" incase you didn't catch it all.
This song, lyrically and musically, is a masterpiece! Johnny Marr on the strings and Morrissey's vocals are incredible.
This is melodically beautiful and inventive.

I love all Smiths songs, NO MATTER WHAT. Choice reaction right here 💯💯💯💯
Great band and Morrissey has some Awesome Vocal skills Tre 👍
I totally agree. I have never paid too much attention to the lyrics, but just love the music and vocals.

Having the lyrics on hand would make you appreciate the songs more.
Nice pick for a reaction. "Like" earned.

Johnny Marr could really put a pop song together. Morrissey is the wild card with his lyrics.

Perhaps blasphemy to the Smiths fans but the Mark Ronson & Daniel Merriweather cover of this is better
da heck, blasphemy indeed
I don't think I will be able to recover after reading this....

@@zziicckk01 I would maybe retract my statement these days….but it’s still a VERY good cover if you haven’t heard it
