I am so grateful for Mathew Perry. In my opinion his comparison between a person having one drink and "feeling a little wonky" and how for him that one drink would reset his world to normalcy is the best description I've heard about alcohol use disorder. I am 14 months sober and honestly, the best addiction medicine is hearing a person who struggled similarly to me share their story. I struggled for 30 years with drinking and/or smoking MJ and inside of it there is so much shame and regret over not being able to stop even knowing that you are hurting yourself and people you love and whom love you....and there is so much judgement pointed towards those of us with genetic markers of addiction, PTSD, mental health differences, and folks suffering from racism and social injustices. I plan on reading and putting Mathew Perry's book and this interview in my sobriety tool kit.
congrats. but you made one large error. equating pot to drinking. thats apples to oranges. alcoholism and opiate addiction are the worse two addictions, period, with a strong argument that alcohol is much worse. You cant reason with a drunk and if reason is not in the room, well, nothing else is. But pot, jesus, you could smoke an ounce a day with little to no effect on your life except if you choose to use it an an excuse. You really should be careful about leading the unknowing on to dangers in life, pot aint one of them. This is coming from someone who has been addicted to everything at some point in life, EXCEPT alcohol, thank god. And alcohol is legal, imagine that.
Clearly you have no understanding of addiction. Any drug from weed to heroin is dangerous for an addict. One is too many a thousand is never enough. Once you start the cycle again some people never get the chance to be clean again after picking up again.
@@MrAlistairrobertson Actually, clearly you do not. Quit reading from books written by people that havent been addicts or addicts of only one thing. I have been an addict to EVERYTHING, except alcohol, and a differnt points in my life. I could write a book on thew differences of each addiction and how they are ENTIRELY different from each other. I have been addicted to things like marijuana (which was not a real addiction) to IV drug use of everything, literally. They are anything but the same and the addiction qualities and actions so much different from each other. Quit talking about something you clearly have no clue about except through "reading". And someone that has only been addicted to one thing in their life has no idea either and no right to speak or equate them all the same. All the BS know it alls through no experience of their own are what make addictions so clearly misunderstood.
Thank you for proving my point. Maybe you should go and try and understand what addiction is rather than sounding so Ill informed. The thing that qualifies me is I am an addict been an addict for the entirety of my life. It doesn’t matter the drug you are addicted to it all leads to the same point
@@MrAlistairrobertson all i have to say is hahahahahahahah! you have NO clue!!! I work with addicts everyday and they ALL agree!! but go ahead with your outdated self, to each their own😂😂😂 Im quite sure you also think addiction cant be cured either and is a lifelong "problem" and 12 steps is the only way. You may not live long enough to see that change in the mainstream, but it will! Keep white knuckling it and teaching others its the only way lol. Myself and others will sit back with popcorn and watch you all live the true definition of insanity by relying on such programs to make it thru life. Cognitive behavioral therapy will change the world when people stop pushing such BS, setting people up for a lifetime of pain! I cant speak for alcoholics (the weakest willed of all addictions) but I can for all others!
Just finished the book and although I’m lucky enough not to suffer with addiction I can see that book is going to help people with it. It’s honest and graphic and everyone should read it
Really beautiful. I’m so happy for him that he’s letting this all out and being received so well. Addiction is a disease and this helps people suffering and those who love people who are suffering.
It’s sad to watch this a year later knowing he’s dead. His death bugged me. 54 is young. When my stepdad died too. RIP Matthew Perry. U will be missed.
That line finally helped me make sense of a loved ones struggles. I always wondered why the beautiful life they have isn't enough, but I see it now. It's that reality doesn't feel the same to them.
I just have SUCH LOVE AND APPRECIATION for this man, for the laughs and tears and times that he's given to me, just by playing Chanandler Bong. 😭 Thank you, Mattie!
He’s so right about what drinking does to the addict/alcoholic. It does turn on you after a while. It’s all fun and games at first, until it begins to dismantle your life piece by piece and the last thing it takes away is you. “Man takes a drink, the drink takes a drink, and then the drink takes the man.” Been Sober 2 years & 11 months. Glad to know Matthew is doing well.
He literally makes me happy every day - I love Chandler on Friends, he is my favorite character and it hurts so much that he’s led a completely different reality during his time filming friends and afterwards. I really do wish him the best and hope he lives a great life today and every day. As he has made so many people happy and laugh
A wonderful guy, he made millions of us laugh and love him and helped many with addiction and was a dear friend to the lucky. Thanks for always giving us your best. Love you man. Rest In Peace. We're keeping your wonderful spirit here, with us.
I am newly into sobriety, but I get inspired by people who didn't give up and made it through. I love Mathew Perry and I'm glad he is still with us, his words really help my confidence I can do it too.
Having observed the ruthlessness of Hollywood and everything attached to that, I realize even more how incredibly strong Matthew Perry is, by sharing his story to the world. I know he is helping people by telling about both the highs and the lows, about the joy but most certainly the pain. I might be a hopeless dreamer, but I consider this all worthwhile if even just ONE person finds the strength to take on his or her addiction because of Perry’s experiences!!
❤ I always admire it when people in the public eye talk openly about their addiction battle. I’m an alcoholic who has been sober for 16months 🎊 🎉. Hearing him talk about it helps me remember I’m not alone. It also feels good to be able to admit my own battle so that I might help another to not feel alone. I’m thrilled to have my life back; it’s not been easy, but it’s so much easier than my life as an active drunk. My one wish, like most, is that I got help sooner…so if you think you might have a problem, (or if you know that you do), then please reach out to a rehab and/or a 12 step group. Stick with it, because the program works if you work it. I hope everyone who reads this has an exceptionally blessed day! Remember you are loved, and you are worthy❤❤❤
It is so hard for some of us to truly understand addiction and how anyone could do anything to death. I do not really understand it but I know it is true. I feel very fortunate that as I hit my teens no one or nothing has ever been the boss of my life.
When his death was announced, but had just started listening to his book, which he also narrated. Hearing his struggles, in his words and his voice was heartbreaking. Then seeing finally get to a place in his life where he found some of the happy that he was missing was hopeful. Chandler was my favorite character on friends but he was also helping people battle through the same struggles he did. He knew what it took to beat it and was ready to help others in the same situation. I miss him, but I hope he found the peace that he looked for his whole life.
Matthew, if there's any way you see this, you're a hero to me. I have a loved one who has struggled so so many years and still does. The suffering is so huge. I read an article about you years ago before another relapse and thought of contacting you for help. Very glad you are doing better, took so much courage. You're helping countless people. Praying for you now.
He sounds really good here. I've seen interviews of him before that made me worry for him, but his voice, his mannerisms, his confidence all here sounds like he's in a much better place
He said in another interview that when he was doing the friends reunion he had just had some kind of dental emergency surgery and his mouth was burning when he was talking, but he might’ve sounded like that in other interviews as well I’m not 100% sure.
I've been binging Friends and as much as I love the show, it hurts to watch him struggle. You can see it in his eyes, body, and speech. I'm glad he's doing something with this, and I hope it helps others.
I love that he realized that we all have “contracts” in this life and they’re all about service to other human beings and that he’s telling his story to help others, bravo.
Seeing things like this are really powerful and I'm really happy more and more folks are comfortable and trusting enough to share this deeply personal information with us. It's about damn time we stop criminalizing people for just wanting to feel good and it's time we start realizing this is our one life and it should be lived feeling great and being close to the people we care about as much as we can.
Addiction isn't a personality flaw. It's not something that "bad" people deal with. Addiction stems from feelings of loneliness, and emptiness, and of being unloved and unlovable. Yes, addictions can bring out the worst in people, make them do terrible things, but in general they aren't bad people at all. They're just hurting and they need help.
And as someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety my whole life, I know the strength it takes to get help. It takes a hell of a strong person to battle those kinds of inner demons and come out breathing on the other side.
@@tracydutton7577 What a naive thing to say. If that were true, the rates of death in us with mental illness whether it is addiction or other wouldnt be so high.

Life is & will forever remain what it is. Rest easy sir.
Just finished the book and although I’m lucky enough not to suffer with addiction I can see that book is going to help people with it. It’s honest and graphic and everyone should read it
I am reading it now, I had no idea how much he was hurting.
Really beautiful. I’m so happy for him that he’s letting this all out and being received so well. Addiction is a disease and this helps people suffering and those who love people who are suffering.
Just seeing him walk out brought tears to my eyes 😢, so happy for him. 😊😊😊
Love his realism and forward attitude. The path of recovery from addiction is really hard and can take a whole life. Thanks for this testimony.
It’s sad to watch this a year later knowing he’s dead. His death bugged me. 54 is young. When my stepdad died too. RIP Matthew Perry. U will be missed.
I'm so sorry your stepdad passed so young. Hope you're OK x
My dad passed away at 54 too…😢
Matthew said it perfectly
“Reality moved to where it should be “ that was also my experience with past addiction
That was very well put. An apt description of burying oneself in one's addiction.
fucking scary, that line brought me to tears
I'm glad your well 🙂❤
That line finally helped me make sense of a loved ones struggles. I always wondered why the beautiful life they have isn't enough, but I see it now. It's that reality doesn't feel the same to them.
** Wear not where - and yes it matters 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I could honestly listen to Matthew Perry and Stephen talk for hours upon hours and I would be in heaven 😍 what a class man Matthew is!!
This so surreal. RIP Matthew 😢
Very well worded questions, with respect and consideration. Stephen is such a great interviewer.
I just have SUCH LOVE AND APPRECIATION for this man, for the laughs and tears and times that he's given to me, just by playing Chanandler Bong. 😭 Thank you, Mattie!
Tremendously powerful, arresting, honest words that not enough people get to hear or take to heart. Big ups to him for this.
You mean "BING ups to him!" Haha jk idk why I did that
Colbert does a great job with his questions. RIP Matthew
this video is eerie now that his is finally at peace. God bless Matthew Perry.
Glad you’ve being doing well mate. Thanks for sharing. All the best.
I love how vulnerable this bloke is. God bless him
He literally makes me happy every day - I love Chandler on Friends, he is my favorite character and it hurts so much that he’s led a completely different reality during his time filming friends and afterwards. I really do wish him the best and hope he lives a great life today and every day. As he has made so many people happy and laugh
Coming back to this, now that he's gone, hits different 😢
Sharing addiction stories is a very very real way to help people and save lives! Thanks Matthew Perry !!!
A wonderful guy, he made millions of us laugh and love him and helped many with addiction and was a dear friend to the lucky. Thanks for always giving us your best. Love you man.
Rest In Peace.
We're keeping your wonderful spirit here, with us.
Awesome questions and wording, excellent. Matty is everything. I love him and wish him the best. He deserves happiness ❤
Best host ever
I am newly into sobriety, but I get inspired by people who didn't give up and made it through. I love Mathew Perry and I'm glad he is still with us, his words really help my confidence I can do it too.
You can do it. Just keep talking to others in your same boat. 👍🏻
One day at a time and remember it only takes 10 seconds of not reverting but you need to fight that ten second battle repeatedly every day.
There’s a 12 step group for any problem you may have. Find support (if you haven’t already).
Rooting for you. ❤
The Holy Spirit can help you
Having observed the ruthlessness of Hollywood and everything attached to that, I realize even more how incredibly strong Matthew Perry is, by sharing his story to the world.
I just wanted to congratulate you on being sober for 16 months and I wish you all the best for the future.
Congratulations ❤❤ Please go ahead and be healthier and happier.
Congrats! Unfortunately, rehab, the cult that is AA and therapy doesn’t work for everyone.
Congratulations!! ❤ Good job!!🙌🏻🎉💪🏻⚡💖
Good job!
Simply heartbreaking that almost one year later (after this interview) - Matthew Perry is gone!
R.I.P. 🙏 🕊️ ❤️🩹
I've always wanted good things for Matthew Perry. I'm glad to hear he's doing well after this long fight.
We effin love you Matthew!! So happy to see you well and healthy. God bless you sweet man🥰💯💥
Love Matthew Perry. He kept us laughing through life's hard times.God Bless him.
he looks and sounds so much better than during the reunion.. wish he had been at this level when they had that moment together
He just had dental surgery at that reunion
He was together for that. It was his stupid teeth. I wish people would stop getting fake teeth. Looks like snow in the mouth.
It is so hard for some of us to truly understand addiction and how anyone could do anything to death. I do not really understand it but I know it is true. I feel very fortunate that as I hit my teens no one or nothing has ever been the boss of my life.
His candor is so endearing. I’m so glad he’s better now.
I really admire this period of his life, like him sharing his experiences and promoting his book that can potentially help millions
Literally so young yet his body and demeanor moved like an elder. Addiction is a powerful and horrible thing. Rip
I am so sorry that Matthew was hurting in life, I hope that he as at peace now ❤️
It breaks my heart to look back and know how much he questioned his place in the world. 💔
Yes, it seems that he gave Colbert his best self. He's probably still struggling but the effort was appreciable
Has his speech been affected permanently?
In his most recent interviews he seems to be talking a lot better I think he just needed a few weeks to get back to normal
That’s amazing about the contract etc and he helped and will continue helping others through his book. What a wonderful beautiful soul!
Combert really managed that interview pretty well. Congrats. Good questions. Goos tones. No judgment. Good pase. No over drama or too much comedy.
You did it Matty...complete. God takes to good ones. Rest in peace, FRIEND.
@@unseeliesidhegoddess it's the struggle that makes 1 stronger
@@tracydutton7577 What a naive thing to say. If that were true, the rates of death in us with mental illness whether it is addiction or other wouldnt be so high.
@@SerCalliope in my personal experience.
♥️
Thank you so much Mathew for your honesty and your trust to be so open. The illness of addiction of any type is hell as many of us know all too well. It's the horrible feeling of being normal ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP Matthew Perry, You are always in our hearts
Sending a lot of love to Matthew. 🙏💗🥰 So thankful that he can move on from addiction one day at a time. He is a great actor. His tone of voice and faces, timing and charisma are everything. Can't wait to read the book and to see him more often.
It really is so nice to see him back and appreciate his honesty. 👍
Awe I grew up watching Matthew Perry and not only as a fan and someone from Canada … I am continually happy for him and am so sad for the loss his family and loved ones are experiencing RIP
Absolutely love this guy. So proud of you Matthew! ❤️
R.I.P. This was terrible news to wake up to this morning.
Being an addiction researcher, I feel every word he says. Not everyone is wired similarly in their brains and we don't know if the need for taking drugs and the reinforcement of it comes from chemical imbalance or genetics or environmental conditions. He did great for himself and others. Rest in peace, my dearest Chandler. Thank you for all the laughs. My heart breaks.
Keep it up Mathew! We are cheering for you. You are our friend forever.
Prayers for strength to keeping doing the good he's doing. And for us all.
huge *respect* and so much LOVE to you Matthew - thank you for courage, your strength - *thank you* ❤
I think it’s important for these kind of conversations and information, for people struggling with addictions to acknowledge their problems and to know that they are not alone, and also for their friends and families to understand the “reality” of people with addictions are experiencing. Glad he’s doing well.
Oh boy I miss him so much he always put a smile onmy Face when I was down. What a tragedy that he is gone. He had avery very good sense of humour he was a natural. Loved Matthew Perry for that. MAY he Rest IN External peace. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL!!!!😢😢😢😢😢😢
I read the book. If by any chance Matthew Perry sees this, please get an ADHD assesment. I read the book and found soo many likenesses with you. I never had the drugs but a lot of different ways. The anxiety, depression and so on. Everything is spot on. Please, please go check that out.
😢
Miss you so much Matty, God bless you, rest in peace ❤️🙏🏻❤️
So sad that a year from that taping Matthew would pass away. He will be truly missed
So important that he speaks out and testifies to destigmatize addiction and help others seek help. Bravo! And onward and upward one day at a time ❤️🙏
His remark about the 4th wall absolutely brilliant, in all its layers. He was a brilliant, intelligent, hilarious human being. He is, and will be, so missed.
I just wanna hug him. Honestly, this man was suffering so badly while making me laugh through Friends, now I just wanna hug him and help him make him feel as good as he has made me feel as Chandler Bing.
