  • Made yesterday after an influx of messages regarding this single issue, I show you how many areas a MK1 can leak from at the rear on the hatchback models and how to reduce it!

    I've been doing that thing with the absorbant cloths for years. I gave up trying to sort it. I still live in hope! Brilliant video and I think I'll have to give it another shot👍

    You would have hoped that they would have fixed this problem when they made the mk 2 Focus. I have had to do this very same thing with our mark 2 Focus. I have managed to fix it completely. I had to put seam sealer all around the panel joins. It doesn't look pretty but it's done the job.

    The rear window leak could be caused by the plastic trim triangle. There’s 2 hole behind the triangle. One is a fir tree clip and the other is a locating post hole both of which are sealed using a foam grommet. I fixed mine with black RTV to seal old clips. It’s unlikely to remove these unless paint work is required. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

      That is a good shout and again another area they can get in, I can confirm mine doesn't leak from there but if there's a hole - there's an entry!

    Another idea how check leaks without looking weird in car in rain is if you have garden with water and ask somebody spray, and you look inside where it is leaking from

    For the water on the front floors, the fix is easy. Take a metal coat hanger and make it straight. Now, notice on the edge of your bonnet hinges, there are two main gutters that can get stuck with leaves and pine needles, obstructing the wipers cowls, hence causing water to overflow into the carpets. Just take your new rod and gently push it in until you see it coming down from under car. Problem fixed. Check these every year. That’s how I fixed mine. Easy. A mechanic showed me the trick long ago.

      This is a good tip generic to a lot of cars but Mk1s can leak at the front while no blockage is happening in the scuttle area! Maybe that's another topic I should go over.

      @@usuallyfixingtinkering The front of my MK1 is very similar than yours. One issue how these rubber cowls. They’re drying and disintegrate and are nearly impossible to remove anymore without breaking them (mainly the pins), not taking into account that you must remove to wipers arms to take both sides out and when you remove them, you would see lot of stuff there, mostly leaves and pine needles, enough to block the water to drain on each side. As for the filter, I am able to remove it without removing the cowl (not sure where yours is, mine is in the opposite side of the driver. A few years ago, I ordered two new ones on eBay and replaced them. I am pretty sure that you could just lift them a little from the engine bay side and insert a very flat vacuum hose (those garden vacuums). If you go gently, you shouldn’t break any pins. I think that in a few years from now, all these parts will have disappeared from the market and these cars will belong in a museum!

    Mine was the rear washer pipe came loose ,it was running inside the rubber cover.

    i just replaced my Oem throttle position sensor today, and my god the car runs very smooth now!
    Als the fuel consumption is a lot lott better. People told me not to replace that part unless its giving a fault code.
    WRONG ! its a resistance sensor that gets worn when they age. I do suggest you replace it with a new part, i replaced this 2 times with a junkjard part, and both were awful ! ended up buying aftermarket one an English brand Mobiletron.

    I’ve got a mk2 sedan here in America and about a month ago I started noticing my trunk leaking. I need to quit being lazy and start looking for where it’s coming from😂

    Ahh yes, our rubbish climate, summers are full of mild rain and winters full of dry but ice pole chills. Ridiculous.
    Anyway, my old MK1 Focus lived outside all year round and never leaked, rare? I kept checking regularly but now I have a Mk2.5 Focus and that leaks so Ford never got round to fixing their leaking issues during the generations then? Good info for those owners, I like that your videos are to the point and informative.

      The seals in that MK1 must've been in great condition for it not to leak. We've owned a Mk2 in the family practically since new and it has started to develop a small boot leak after 18 years, mostly ungaraged. I don't think that is a huge let down from Ford as many old cars have some water ingress, and over all I think the Mk2 is well put together.

    So in my Focus a few days ago I noticed that my temp gauge was just past the middle towards the red, pretty much as soon as I started the car. I kept an eye on it for the next few days and sometimes it worked fine, other times it would get stuck in the middle when i turned the car off and then when i turned it on would just move slightly towards the red. Now it is just straight up stuck in the middle even when its off, won't go down. Should I just take the cluster out and try to get it loose again or is there something else I should try and do?

      Change your Cylinder head temperature sensor first as they get erratic as they get older!

      Oh! That would be a cluster issue or bad earth, my bet on that is the cluster has started to play up

    Great educative video, I did not know it is common problem for Mk1. Mine have not that problem, at least didn't noticed anything and we do have a lot of rainy days here...
