    This is the most informative tutorial about shading out there. I even feel guilty that I can watch it for free. Thank you very much!

    I highly recommend doing a few photo studies in black and white for a while to everyone who is struggling. if you're really struggling you can also paint each of the basic shapes (sphere, cubes, cone, pyramid) until you feel yourself grasping the concept of light. Doing these things and reading about "ambient occlusion" really helped me.

    Thank you I am 60 years old and I have been so ill for many years, but by God's grace I am better. I could draw but never got theses basics taught to me. Thank you for your time.Cheryl

      Glad to hear that your health is improving and that you're getting back into art! Drawing and painting honestly become a lot more fun after you get these basics down, you'll get to focus more on the ideas and less on struggling with the more "technical" aspects :)

    I'd notice pinched and bounced light when opening a composition book. It appears brighter where the pages meet. Glad someone else noticed this and described it!

    • @partingmist8550
      @partingmist8550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Now I might be mistaken but I believe that the pinch light is actually just ambient light or bounce light as well. it is not actually brighter then the other bounce lights it is just surrounded by darks so it appears bright.
      In order to test that I did color picking in paint and the spot labeled bounce light is actually brighter than the area label pinch light!

    I've been watching your fundamental series on a marathon, I really like how you get the point across without spoonfeeding it. It really urged me to figure things out by myself and make these fundamentals as an inseparable part of my skillset. Bravo!

    Sir Clint! I am at a roadblock. I see the work of such great artists like yourself and I notice this among you: an ability to light objects of your conception as if they are in 3d space. Should I first create objects in a 3d program like ZBrush to increase my knowledge of a form? (I would have to learn it though, I still don't know it.) Or would I be safe without learning other 3d methods of draw, and instead paint an object in Photoshop in an array of angles and lighting setups to build a sort of understanding that way? What would make the most sense to do assuming I want to make great looking paintings and don't really care about 3d pipelines? *sorry long question

    • @ДимонЦунами
      @ДимонЦунами 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DC Beatem definately you should learn 3d

    • @partingmist8550
      @partingmist8550 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way you can increase your knowledge of form and lighting is to draw simple objects from real life, that way you can move around them and view them at different angles. paper towel rolls or cups for cylinders, carboard or furniture for boxes, balls of some type for spheres. I like to shine a lamp on a clay sphere I made and check different angles of light. then take them outside and draw them is different lighting conditions.

    I'm not at all an artist, but i had a brain injury three years ago and lost certain aspects of 'language facility' or processing or something, and i began to see 'geometrically' or spatially sometimes when 'words stopped working', so i suddenly began drawing recently and it's SO WEIRD because the one thing that literally kept me afraid of even trying to draw my whole life--the aspects that seemed insurmountably difficult (perspective and shading in particular)--became 'instinctive'. So it's made me start watching videos like this to learn better terminology/conceptual accuracy i guess... which is my long intro way of asking "why is it called 'terminator' instead of 'terminus'?" The jargon is new to me, but my background was music and linguistics, and i swear it feels like 'terminus' would make way more sense.
    Is there a reason/history behind that? (I may have even learned it before, but 'head injury' so i honestly have no idea) :)
    Thanks in advance!

    Is there a way to practice this? Or help memorise it?

  • @Kogirius
    @Kogirius 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    great short video again. The idea to use that "shading" word is great, so many types in one picture! perhaps you could show the direction of incoming light... wish we could see your process of drawing it in a bit more detail. I've almost skipped it with that 01:33 description skip!
    How did you do the transitions so smooth? in general, i ve found it really hard to find a tutorial on how to imitate the analogue method of stumping/blending charcoal for smooth skin moddeling with some cloth, and blending with the colorpicker seems not very efficient...if not telling what to watch directly, perhaps you could include general recommendations? like whom to watch/which words to google.
    thanks for the files too

    Hi Clint,
    I have a big question that I could not answer, about color and how color mixing in RGB.
    A few days ago, I heard something about the fact that we can not get pure Green in photoshop when we mix yellow and blue. And I tried and it's true !! At least not in photoshop. The colors do not mix as they should showing some gray tones that are not pure green. Researching I discovered that the only way to get similar colors would be with dodge color .... but it would not be like a traditional paint job.
    Do you know if there is any way to be able to mix colors in a traditional way on a screen? I would appreciate all the help they can offer me. Thank you very much

    • @LillenArt2
      @LillenArt2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RGB color is a lot different from mixing paint in real life, mostly because your computer monitor is backlit whereas your canvas is not. The result is that digital painters have access to colors that can't be printed on paper. There are almost too many colors. One way around this is to find a Painter's wheel plugin and make your own swatch palettes. Color is a funny thing. What might look green might not actually be green. The surrounding colors affect what you're seeing. Something could look green but might actually be blue or yellow so if you can't get an exact color keep this in mind.

  • @flifluflofli

    seems like like bounce like wifi ... and it does not bounce like a ball even on a flat surface against a direction it still bounce back and emit everywhere ;) what i notice from your tutorial .. the only thing that bother me how to know where the shadow is and light when started even with explanation is sort of guess ... or i need to build a structure with the shape with3dmax ? :)

    • @partingmist8550
      @partingmist8550 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You gotta look at a real object and shine a real light on it, you will start to notice a pattern in how the light affects the object. And gotta draw the way it looks.
