If you view every color in gray scale each has different vales not matter how closely similar they might look in actual color. So, ya practicing in grey scale first really helps when transitioning to actual color..

I never paid much heed to colour theory, my thought process was ‘i dont see colour right anyways so lets just not use it’, i normally use a spot colour, but this was super useful. I think im going to try out some of those tri schemes, your liliana art looked really appeasing colourwise to me, idk if it was because the triad omitted the extremes of the colours i cant see, but i find that really intriguing.

11:55 from what i've observed, though they're the same intensity, yellow appears closer to white and blue appears closer to black. it has something to do with how mammals perceive color. there's also blue and violet appearing more in the dark because they're shorter wavelengths which can penetrate darkness better than longer wavelengths like red, which is why the ocean is blue.
Even though i had a course on color theory in my computer scientist course, which was mainly to lead towards 3D graphics, i am still blown away. There are so many details, and how color can be arranged to please the eyes, it is still a mystery to me. Never the less, thanks for this mind blowing take on color theory ^^

Thank you for the great tutorials! But some mistakes i want to mention: 1. You can Mix Primary Colors. 2. All colors Together only make in traditionel media a brown color because of how the pigments work. In Photoshop a neutral grey with 50% value and if you mix light you will get a white.
Not sure why you think I made a mistake. Of course you can mix primary colors, you can mix any colors you want to get whatever color you need. All colors together do make a brown grey in traditional media and in PS unless you're not using a Normal blending mode.
With the first part he meant that at 2:25 when you say "they are called the primaries because there are no other colors combined that can make those colors", that isn't true. I was reading Color and Light yesterday actually and Gurney says "First, the idea that red, yellow, and blue are primaries is not set in stone. Any of the infinite hues on the outer rim of the gradating wheel could make an equal claim as primary."
Have tried it in PS you will get a neutral tone. But the setup is not so easy: 1. In the HSB color selection set the saturation and brightness to 100% 2. Get 3 Layers with the hues 0, 120 and 240. 3. Set the first layer to 100% the second one to 50% and the top one to 33%. 4. Think whoa its grey! (It wont be exactly grey 2% saturation remains. Because you cant set Layers exactly to 1/3) And yes i meant 2:25.

THANKYOU!! (Slaps in the wood) Yesterday, I saw an artist picking a color base on the triangle and rectangles created by the points of on the color harmonies. But he did not specify what kind of techniques is that. Then I saw your video and I found out that is called "GAMUTS".
One minor correction I'd like to make. Those "primary" colors only relate to pigmentation; things which absorb light. However, the real primary colors (what frequencies your eyes pick up) are Blue, GREEN, and Red. This becomes especially pertinent when dealing with emissive sources, and should be kept in mind when drawing one's art. That is to say, you need to consider if the colors are being blended from emissive sources, or absorbent sources. Colors originating from the lights (green+red=yellow) on lamps will blend differently from, say, layers of stained glass (green+red=brown). It also proves false the claim at 2:30 that you can't get yellow via mixing other colors: again, that's only true if you're talking about pigmentation (absorbent), NOT light sources (emissive). Ultimately, it depends on which convention you wish to go with. The primary colors you mentioned are traditional in form, but ultimately incorrect and misleading if applied universally. However, they are "traditional" for a reason, since most scenes will involve absorbent color rather than emissive, so it would be best to simply add a caveat notation.
I am not unaware of these points which is why I said "there is far more to cover in this topic than I can cover in this video" as my caveat. This is also a 15-minute fundamental art video, a 101 introduction so new artists will be familiar with the concepts and terms, not an advanced course and in-depth dive into the topic. Your enthusiasm for the subject is appreciated but I'm afraid you missed the concept of what this series is about.
Those "primary" colors aren't really that of pigmentation, those would be cyan, magenta, and yellow. It's more an old-school thing that kind of stopped in time, and coincidentally with one of the most wrong versions somehow becoming the most popular. And its huge following largely ignores the advances in science and technology on which color printing is based, which really works with pure pigment mixing, unlike artists, who'll often have dozens of ready-made mixtures and just tweak them a bit, rather than working only with primaries. Obviously these primaries aren't totally wrong, just a bit off (some old school books/authors would even have a "red" that was somewhat in the way to magenta, and a much more cyanish blue, and maybe some were even dead right), so trial and error paint mixing following these principles will still eventually allow one to reach to the intended color.
Sorry children, BOTH color wheels are correct. One is additive and exists in light. One is subtractive, in pigment. Neither will ever become obsolete or out of date. They are FACTS of nature.

Yellow and Magenta makes Red. Cyan and Magenta makes Blue. And what about white ? Can you make some out of Yellow Red and Blue ? Obvioudly colour is more complex than you say. Primaries depends of many factors. If you're talking about light, paint, inks the colours needed to make the others may change : primaries, coposites, composants...
There is a note that says he'll talk about RGB and CMYK another time so I think this is meant to be a very basic overview. Some of the other traditional artists I watch when creating a paint palette choose to separate the primaries even further into warm and cool groups. It does get pretty complicated. Some digital colors (like a very bright cyan) only exist because of the additive back light of your monitor. They might not exist in the traditional sense of paint and printing ink which is probably why he didn't get into some of the digital specific color spaces.
firstly there are no "true" primaries in the sense that you can mix them to get all other colours. you can't make any pure spectral colour by mixing other colours. what you can have is a small set of colours that you can mix to get a wide variety of colours. that's what red, blue, yellow, black and white are. secondly, while red, yellow and blue (RYB) offer a good range of secondary and tertiary colours, cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY) will give you better results, in the sense that CMY offers a greater gamut of mixed colours than RYB do. I have no idea why artists promote RYB so much over CMY, but it might be something to do with how the human optic system works.

Sunlight is a white light source, right? Even though its shadows are often altered by the atmosphere. You said most of the time only a group of colors are available, and included the sunset as an example, does sunlight appear nonwhite often? I always had the impression that sunlight looks whiter in clouded days, while bright sunlight looks yellowish.
I don't think pure white exists so much in nature but if you really want to know the answer I would spend some time outside. A lot of artists like to take their own ref photos to develop their own mental visual library.
Thanks for the replies. The fact is that I don't know if I can trust my eyes when looking outside, since we always adapt our view to try to see things as they are, and photography is suspicious because they never perfectly grasp the colors of nature, especially subtle colored shadows, for example.

This color seems to make more sense, or is just easier to understand, than the ones I'm seeing in Clip Studio Paint and Paint Tool Sai. In both programs, the opposite of primary blue is yellow, opposite of primary red is cyan? I am so confused now.
Because this is a bad video relying on information that is more than 100 years out of date. The definition of a primary color being a color that cannot be made by other colors is factually wrong. Red can be made with Magenta and Yellow. Blue can be made with Magenta and Cyan. Think about printers. How can they print blue and red despite not having blue and red ink? If you wanted to make a subset of colors using 3 starter colors, you could technically pick any 3. However, if you wanted the widest range of possible colors, you'd have to pick 3 that are 120 degrees apart on the true color wheel. Not the fake one made by forcing RBY. Blue and Yellow are opposites, so you can't make vibrant greens, unlike what you can do with Cyan and Yellow. Unlike a lot of art people that follow tradition, digital art and the printing industry are based on math and the science of color. They typically use Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow as the primaries because they are 120 degrees apart and because they are the exact opposite of the RGB primaries that were used for color TVs and monitors.
What are the actual primary colours.red blue yellow or cyan magenta and yellow ....mixing cyan n magenta we could get blue or red when mixed in different degrees of each colour ....? Please let me know the truth if you know...
The answer can differ if you're referring to additive or subtractive light. As experiment, try getting some tubes of paint, mix them in the varying ways and see how it works.
The answer is, it depends on your definition. Analogous schemes are where you use a slice of neighboring colors which should be limited to 30% or less of the overall color wheel. If you're only counting primary, secondary and tertiary colors then the answer is no because you just used half the color wheel. The problem is that you now are using half the color wheel and have complementary colors in your palette. This undermines the whole point of being Analogous as it's supposed to be only similar colors and complementary are complete opposites which are conflicting rather than harmonious.
I have never liked using color in anything, and I'm trying to get better at art to get some ideas across instead of having to just use words to give examples of real world stuff. I don't see color as an important thing to me in art, but I'll be damned if I don't watch the whole series through.

boitahaki it's almost never just white. Always a slight ivory color with some yellow added usually.

Red can be made with Magenta and Yellow. Blue can be made with Magenta and Cyan. Think about printers. How can they print blue and red despite not having blue and red ink? If you wanted to make a subset of colors using 3 starter colors, you could technically pick any 3. However, if you wanted the widest range of possible colors, you'd have to pick 3 that are 120 degrees apart on the true color wheel. Not the fake one made by forcing RBY. Blue and Yellow are opposites, so you can't make vibrant greens, unlike what you can do with Cyan and Yellow. Unlike a lot of art people that follow tradition, digital art and the printing industry are based on math and the science of color. They typically use Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow as the primaries because they are 120 degrees apart and because they are the exact opposite of the RGB primaries that were used for color TVs and monitors.

The answer can differ if you're referring to additive or subtractive light. As experiment, try getting some tubes of paint, mix them in the varying ways and see how it works.

Can I use analogous schemes with 5 or 6 colors?
The answer is, it depends on your definition. Analogous schemes are where you use a slice of neighboring colors which should be limited to 30% or less of the overall color wheel. If you're only counting primary, secondary and tertiary colors then the answer is no because you just used half the color wheel. The problem is that you now are using half the color wheel and have complementary colors in your palette. This undermines the whole point of being Analogous as it's supposed to be only similar colors and complementary are complete opposites which are conflicting rather than harmonious.

I have never liked using color in anything, and I'm trying to get better at art to get some ideas across instead of having to just use words to give examples of real world stuff. I don't see color as an important thing to me in art, but I'll be damned if I don't watch the whole series through.
