    The “pipe” in the bass drum, is apart of Rogers “Memoriloc” Tom mount. Enabled a huge amount of hardware to be added and dispersed the weight to the floor. It became an iconic part of the Rogers brand from the Fullerton California era. I hope this helps! The drums are great ! The copper finish is repairable but isn’t easy.

    • @someroomtodrum
      @someroomtodrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that’s wild! Thanks for the info! I always assumed it was a DIY thing that the previous owner did. I would rather have a nice mahogany finish than the copper, if it’s possible.

    • @tomtreganowan7960
      @tomtreganowan7960 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the pipe is a important part of the Rogers tom mount. Because the mount has two inline bolts if you mount a large tom to one side it could start wearing on the shell. Also if you have the other Rogers tom arm you can take the two parts that go into the tom and make a single tom mount with them. Instead of the large triple mount you're using now. It will look more streamline. Just a thought. Drums and your playing sound great. Thanks for sharing.

      The center rod in the kick holds the top of the drum up from the weight of the 14” tom. The 24” kick inherently has less structural rigidity than than a 20” or 22” from top to bottom pressure. The 24” kick here may be a candidate for out of round syndrome. Nice kit!

    Nice kit. In my opinion putting fingertight pinstripes on vintage drums, such as this, is sacrilage. If it serves your purpose it's fine I guess, but this set is sonicly capable of much much more than this.

    • @someroomtodrum
      @someroomtodrum  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can get a lot more tone with white coated or Fiberskyn heads. Pinstripes weren’t the best example of how these drums can sound, I guess, but they work for the covers I’m doing. I used coated G2s when I first got the kit and it sounded great.

    Mahogany outer plies on slingerlands were generally used with wrapped drums, because the rough texture of the mahogany helped the glue bond to the wrap.
    Non wrapped kits usually had a maple outer ply

    Beautiful kit, I've got the 5" Artist snare that matches it. Copper wrap is beautiful, even in the roadworn state of yours, mine miraculously has survived pretty well through multiple owners till I arrived with it 2 years ago. Its a beautiful sounding snare though and a real favourite to take out on jazz gigs.
    The copper finish is actually copper plated sheet steel, so I'd not dare remove it, it'll cause far more damage than you want, and isn't going to be as easy to remove as a wrap. The wood will break before the metal will. Leave it be.

    Nice kit. Slingerland is one of those companies that I wish would've never folded up. They were the Tama of their day for hardware and also made great sounding drums. And today in general, the vast majority for vintage drums on the Internet sale sites are out of round swelled shells, stripped out hardware, drilled shells which serve no purpose, lifting wrap etc. Yet most sellers either won't disclose that or have no idea what's going on and what they are selling other than something "vintage".....which they automatically post for top dollar.

    I bought my copper Slingerland’s in 1973. Had to order them - 24, 18, 16, 14, 13, 5x14 Sound King snare and I still have them. They have been gigged regularly and in the studio. Currently set up without the 14. Mine have held up very well comparatively with only light “patina” which is Ana big since I gigged without cases. I had them but they would fit in my car and then I just got used to hauling them around like that. Great drums that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Btw, I’m 65 and received them in mid ‘74.
    PS - all hardware is original or new old stock on the drums. The stands have been replaced except for the snare, throne & HH stands. I upgraded from the tempo king pedal (meh) to a yellow jacket.

My drums don't sound like yours because your are muted so much that they sound like MUD and your are all miced with effects. Mine are wide open with no mics and they are tuned like a Jazz Set and sound like Buddy Rich's Radio King Set that he played for the last 10 years of his life. Whoever taught you to put pillows and mutes in and on your drums was an idiot. How can you ever hit your tom up front and have the sound bounce off of the bottom skin and make a beautiful drum sound, when it's muted with "Whatever you are using to KILL the sound of the DRUM?????????????????

    Nice. . . the Pipe thats was in the Bass Drum is to keep the Big Bass Drum from caving in or bulge out due to the weight if the large and heavy toms. I asked my friend about it in the 70's. He got Slingerland 14x26 bass, 12x15 tom, 16x18 and 18x20 floors. . . And now I got the XXXL bug so I'm Frankensteining one. 20x28 bass, 18x20 floor, 14x14 rack tom, vintage hardware and a pipe for the Bass drum once I put a tom on it, It's gonna deform... then try to figure out how to use either North toms or Octobans to keep it look like a mess. . . anyway.... Since then I've added to it with six amazing copper Slingerland snares, yes the deep bongos, 6,8,10,12 concert toms and added cool 18", 20", and 22" bass drums. **Also have the killer copper 12/14/20 kit! Great find, love them!
    Like to hear them with some different heads like maybe Ambassadors, just a thought!

      When I first bought them, I put coated G2s on all the toms. Great tone with those, they sounded awesome.

    I had a 8 . Slingerland Drum set bought in 1975. Copper
    9 piece. I regret selling it so bad

    Music Yo owned Slingerland for a time as well. The copper snares were pretty good.

      I hadn’t heard of Music Yo but apparently they’re also owned by Gibson.

    I became the lucky custodian of a 1974 natural maple finish Slingerland kit. Thanks to Sweetwater music I was able to replace missing rims and hoops , and vintage drum logos made me a custom kick drum resonant head. I absolutely love this monstrous kit. . This kit still has the original tom mounts which are not user friendly at all, so I mount my 14 rack tom on a snare drum stand which works perfectly.

      That sounds awesome! It sounds like a rare find, too. Most of their kits had the mahogany finish around that time. Congrats on that treasure!

      I used a wood refinishing product called Tibet Almond. Amazing results for removing scuff marks.

    You make them sound great! It takes so much more energy to play huge drums like that and make them speak properly. Maybe you're used to it, but I'd be tuckered out in 5 minutes. "Normal" sizes would only require you to play half as hard as you currently do, haha. Can't wait to see your new Ludwig kit!

      Thanks! It is pretty exhausting but also good exercise. I’m stoked to get the Ludwig set up after one more cover on this kit. Thanks for watching!

      They used a lot of sheet metal in those days. I prefer the natural wood or wood stain look.
