Yes he is "from Earth" but like a number of the truly most amazing guitarist's whom I admire he 1) came from a musical family where a parent(s) is a musician and they began teaching him how to read and write at a very early age. Pat began when he was in about 3rd grade with music AND TOOK IT SERIOUSLY. That's how they get the head start on everyone else. Pat's older brother was a trumpet player. 2) Beyond that they learn their theory and during their formative years they study and play incessantly. Pat also says he was lucky that their where A LOT of excellent OLDER than him jazz musician's in his local area who let him sit in on guitar at their gigs and simultaneously they taught him the ropes at an unusually young age. That's how by the time he got to Berkeley School of Music he say's he was a student for maybe 1 semester and then they offered him an instructor job. Put all that together with a strong passion for music and the resulting playing may indeed sound "other worldly" but no as usual it's the result of hard work, study, and lots-o-practice.
yes, I saw him at an ad hoc show at a Holiday Inn the afternoon Jaco died in Ft. Lauderdale, with Peter Erskine on drums... all the guitarists in the room went blind that evening... not a titan, but a true god
After listening to Anna Maria, Pat couldn't help but put his back into his ride! He was all over that! Great piece, and the album they did together is truly wonderful. So glad this was recorded and - thank you, ibs11 - was posted for all of us to enjoy.
To think I followed him almost 25 years ago, but even to this day he is unappreciated. Heartbreaking as I am concerned. Magnificent musician speaking volumes to the world x
The first time I heard this amazing music was the 12th of February. 1989. I got the album "Travels" for my 30th birthday by Grete Pedersen (today conductor of the Norwegian Soloist choir). A late August night, 6 months later, alone at home, I moved my speakers and my best chair into the garden. In the middle of the night, moonlight, silhouettes of big pines against the sky, the grasshoppers played in the neighbor's bush. I played "Farmer's Trust" over and over again. Path Metheny; - Thank you, - You gave me an everlasting experience ....
