A TEENAGER who suffers from an extremely rare condition means if he falls asleep unassisted - he dies.Liam Derbyshire was born with Ondine’s Curse, officially known as Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome, which causes respiratory arrest due to a patient’s lungs not functioning when they are asleep. The condition, which affects less than 1500 worldwide, means the 17-year-old has to be plugged into a life support machine and watched by a carer every night to keep him alive. Doctors gave Liam just six weeks to live after birth, but later this year the young man from Gosport, South Hampshire, is turning 18 and has truly defied all odds.

Backup battery. That device I would say 4-8 hours of battery life. If it went beyond that I am sure he would be arranged to be driven or flown to a hospital with power. And as a last resort probably generators - though if it were to come to that...I am sure they'd rather not think about it. I suppose they could hand vent him for a bit or literally keep him awake with medication for as long as possible. But of course that will have its limits too.

He has siblings. So maybe when they pass away, his siblings could take care of him.

I use to hate sleeping but after I watched this I cherished the fact that I could sleep without the thought of well just dying.. don't be ungrateful for what you have just be happy for what you have. Even if you have if you have a life threatening disease

Those machines are backed up on battery.
In my place power usually go away for weeks, it was one time it went away for 3 weeks, on normal day it usually go away 5-6 hrs in a day, they turn off the power every 3-4 hours, he won't survived a day here, cuz I never saw in my life when electricity didn't go in a whole day not a single day

Should be titled “the teen who dies without a ventilator while sleep” because sleep he do. Anyway he seem like a normal teen to me, looks great, able to walk, go outside, kick football, build LEGO, play PlayStation, have a caring family, seems a very good life and thankful for that :)

+Jellytopbottem Deadbush The fact that he's alive, especially after the doctors said he would probably live only 6 weeks, is definitely a huge miracle! There is still hope that a cure will be found!
They said no one knows how long he will live. A real miracle would be something that can't be explained. This is just a condition so rare that the doctors can't give an answer as to how long someone will survive. Survival rates are just based on data, more data means better answers.

This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. I have an autistic 12 year old, and I've already mentally prepared myself to take care of him for the rest of his life. He's going into his teens soon and I don't know what to expect, I'm so terrified and sad for him that life has to be different. With Liam you add a few more years and Ondine's disease? I cannot imagine. I have to go cry about this and everything, excuse me.
joekenorer I have an autistic brother and it is so hard to take care of him sometimes he is just too much for my mom and I. He is now 9 and it seems every year it gets harder and harder
My son was very difficult in his younger years, destroying things, eating raw meat out of the fridge at night, pooping in his pants, I worried that would always be how he was. But he changed a lot in the past 4-5 years. He's calmed down, isn't destructive, finally potty trained, but over all much more manageable and personable. He still won't hold a conversation, but he does talk and a lot and well, it's just usually scripting his favorite TH-camrs.
Don't lose hope, he will change a lot as he gets older. In what ways will be hard to tell, but he will change.
I have autistic members in my family. The severeness ranges from person to person but they all mantain jobs and families of their own. Don't discourage and/or look down on your kid. He'll do great, no matter the struggles.
Also, people with autism are extremely intelligent but rarely get the oppertunity to really showcase it. So let your kid explore his space around him and give him the tools so that he may figure out his strengths and weaknesses.
A doctor once told me. "Neurotypical see a lot of trees together and think 'oh, that's a forest.' but people with autism look at the ground, they look at the flowers and mushrooms and from that base that it is indeed a forest." "people with autism are in no way less intelligent. they just view the world in a different light, and so, express themselves differently.
Just because he is 'different' doesn't at all diminish his quality or life or make him less likely to succeed with his life.

By the way, God loves you so much that He sent His only son Jesus to die for your wrongs so that you could be forgiven by God (who rose Jesus from the dead after 3 days). Accept Jesus into your life and as your Lord and Savior while you can! I am not forcing you to do so, but I STRONGLY encourage you to.

Josh T maybe they noticed he wasnt breathing when falling asleep because you dont imieditly die because of not breathing it takr a while from you to die from that (*at least I think I of course am stating what I think would be the case*) so maybe this continued on like maybe they kept an eye on him so then thry relized within time of him not breathing during sleep he would die? I dont truely have an answer of course please understand im saying what I think happened for them to figure out this man's condition.

When a new born is wel born they alway check on him for like a day to do test and he is not dead cuz if he was new born he wil sleep with a air mask man i know this and im 9 maybe my dad is a docter 😑
