This is by far the best video I've found on backpacking food. I just started getting into backpacking, and have been trying to plan meals. In normal life, I eat an extremely healthy paleo-ish whole food diet, so most of the backpacking food advice I've found sounds just plain awful. Candy bars? Ramen noodles? Mountian house meals? Gross!!! I realize there is no way I'll be able to eat my normal diet of fresh whole food on the trail, and I'm fine with that, but I just can't wrap my head around the typical stuff that normal backpackers eat. For such a healthy hobby, it's amazing to me the kind of garbage backpackers will put into their bodies. Not judging. It's just a complete 180 from my normal lifestyle. After years of not eating sugar or processed food, I'd probably get very sick if I tried to eat that stuff. I'm so glad I found your video. It looks like real, healthy, nutritious food. Finally! I'm feeling much more optimistic about packing for longer trips now. Much thanks for the ideas!

Wow! Thanks for the inspiring words.
I eat a very similar diet at home as well :)
It's a lot tougher to pull of out on the trail, thats for sure!
Thanks a ton for the awesome feedback 🙌

Patagonia has some very tasty dehydrated food albeit processed. For me the thought of a brand like mountainhouse dehydrated beef stew sounds awful and it absolutely would be at home if I was just sitting around at home although if you hike Mailbox peak in Washington state your hunger turns into another beast entirely ( for myself). My partner who eats much like you though would still get sick 99% of the time if she ate the MH beef stew. Hummus is a huge go to for us.

I am looking forward to your dehydrating video. This is the 1st time I’ve found anyone who can effectively have tasty healthy food that can handle all types of weather. Thank you for all your effort. As a mom of a twenty something yr old I would be very proud of you as I am mine.

A dehydrator will run you about $60 Canadian which is the cost of 5-6 Mountain House meals, and allows you to control exactly what you eat - and in what amounts.
    (Best backpacking investment ever imo.)
I tend to do apple/date/cinnamon nut bars and ground up rice + beans with curry spices. Bars make it so you don't have to stop while hiking and the powdered curry makes it easy to cold soak, or heat up if that's your thing.
Powdered homemade soups are great too.
    Just add water.
Much healthier and lower cost in the long run if you're hiking close to home.
Great vids Iron, keep em coming!
(I'd love to see a pack list from you, being in the PNW myself.)
    Peace.

I agree 100 percent on the Dehydrator. One of my favorite purchases ever 😃
Yum! I haven't tried doing bars yet, but it's next on the list.
Love powdered soups and hearing about what other people eat on the trail!
Hope to cross paths one day 🙌

    • @Hike-IT

Thanks so much. I personally find protein to be the least important factor when it comes to the amount of energy I have out on the trail. I don't specifically try to add to my trail diet.

hi !! the food that is dehydrated that u found on line ,,, could u plz share those online sites ?? how long have u been drying ur own stuff ? is it alot of pretrip wrk?? time for me is an issue so mnt house and others r a easy opt 4 me. it wrk right up till travel time. sometimes it takes a few days just to be really out there !!! if u know what i mean.
but i DO wuna make more of my own stuff. on line dried stuff helps alot to put things together but w/o the dehydrating. its just getting in gear is most likely the biggest hurdle 🤔😉. really appreciate your videos and the time you take to do them including the editing and whatever else is involved. again thanks so much.
