    I've always been skeptical of reviews on a maker's site. Difficult to find them elsewhere sometimes though, especially if the product is not sold anywhere else. TH-cam is my go to when looking for reviews, but oftentimes they can be biased/misleading too. It's a shame.

      Just though I'd chime in, I'm blessed with an insanely strong upper back. I think through years of carrying some sort of pack. I've had a backpack on since primary school, through high school, getting around the city, university, traveling and now hiking. Try carrying a pack with you, add a liter of water, then two-that's already over 4lbs. Carry your groceries in the pack, another 20 there a week. Start working your upper back, traps, delts, lats. It just takes time.

    Hey Iron! I am an avid hiker/backpacker and I love my HMG so much as well! I own an EE quilt, what do you recommend storing it in for UL storage in my pack? I might try out a Zpacks dry bag, but not sure what size to get.... I currently use a compression bag, I know its not UL but I prefer to keep it as small as possible in my pack and don't want to worry about it getting wet. Hope to meet you one day in the Olympics! (I live in the area) Happy trails!

    • @Hike-it
      @Hike-it  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Amanda!
      I would highly advise AGAINST keeping your quilt in a compression bag.
      And AGAINST keeping it as small as possible.
      The more you compress your quilt the more life long damaging effects it will have. (It will loose loft over time)
      I usually store my quilt in no stuff sack and have it fill up dead space in my backpack.
      If I'm worried about rain I will store it in the non WP stuff sack that came with the quilt.
      I will line the inside of my bag with a trash compacter sack so ALL of my gear is guaranteed to stay dry.
      Hope that helps :)
      Awesome to hear your local to the area! I'm sure we will cross paths some time! 🙌

    • @alpineamanda
      @alpineamanda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hike-it I meant a stuff sack, sorry! I always store it out in my gear room when not being used. And that does help, thanks! I feel like I have tried every possible solution, but I am one of those types that prefer less items lol. Will try to convert back to my old ways! Thanks again!

    Do you still recommend this pack ? I am a backcountry fly fisherman who frequently goes on 2-4 week trips. I am oscillating between the HMG 5400 PORTER ( about $500 with pockets, ect ) or a Kifaru Muskeg 7000 ( about $1000 with pockets, ect ). The HMG is super lightweight. The Kifaru is heavier but is designed to more easily carry heavier weights.

    Hey Iron~ how do you deal with lack of any separation between your gear and your back? Seems like no ventilation either. And what about no strap adjustments? Please help me understand if this matters. Thanks Bud

    • @Hike-it
      @Hike-it  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Ronald,
      I prefer to have my backpack right up against my back. It gives me a better center of balance and I can handle heavier loads easier.
      That said, there is little ventilation and your back will definitely sweat more because of this.
      A trade off I'm happy to make.
      If you use the hip belt and loosen up the shoulder straps a little bit you can create a bigger gap between your back and the pack (Im not a fan of of this).
      Are you referring to load adjuster straps?
      I find that they are not needed with this backpack because of it's design.
      It naturally sits in a position as if it had load adjuster straps tightened up.
      I will say the most important factors here would be making sure you pick the correct size that fits your body (small, medium, large or tall).
      And loading your bag correctly:
      - Distributing weight properly.
      - Arranging gear so that the back panel is comfortable (Think nothing jabbing you in the back).
      I know I talk a lot about going ultra light...
      I always carry 14 pounds of camera gear + 1-2 weeks of food and sometimes pack rafting gear on top of my backpacking gear.
      In the end I'm carrying much more weight than the average backpacker.
      The design of this bag handles weight better than any bag I've ever used before (Most of my previous bags had load adjustment straps)
      Hope this helps.
      :)

    With no load lifters, skimpy hip belt, small frame....what's your basis for this review? This seems to be a biased and not substantive video because it's your gear and you need to talk up a 400 dollar purchase. For loads over 35 pounds on an individual who's less than 150 pounds will it be comfortable? It pbly won't ,if you compare it to packs like McHale's,Alpine Luddites, Aiguille Alpine. This is a pack suited for PCT, AT...not mountaineering.

      @@Marcus_Aurelius.
      Which world are you living in? Maybe this 30 pound nonsense works in the alps where every hipster climber idiot is catered to....in north America ..you earn it. You carry everything ...the approach tends to be long wilderness oriented bushwhack a, followed by off trail traverses etc ..... The climbing begins only after these long and interminable approaches. The mountaineering you refer to with measly 30 pound packs is "hotel" mountaineering. Try hitting the picket range in northern WA with just 30 pounds. It's not practical. Over here the actual trad climbing routine begins after you carry 40-50 pounds over a dozen miles of brush,gullies etc, and you plonk yourself somewhere near a glacial moraine, or on a main feature such as a ridge.....After that you have the luxury of climbing with 25-30 pounds of gear.
      You're referring to hipster alpinism.
