It is very necessary for everybody to learn a second language. By learning a second language, we can make our word wider, and we can communicate with different nations around the globe. Moreover, a second language can help us to find a good job easily and we can level up our knowledge.
Yeah, I agree with you. We must have 2 or 3 language because We can talk to someone We can find any job better, for example if you have B2 lvl in English you can have better opportunity even in you country. And now Ive been learning to speak in English for 4 months and I wanna reach that goal. I MUST DO that

Hang in there lil bro. I'm from Brazil aswell, from Rio to more precise. The more you consume the more you get used to the language mate. I'd consider myself fluent in english currently but its only because i've been using every single day, if you don't use it you lose it. Keep doing what u doing and ur gonna get there in no time. Good luck dawg!
Don't give up! It's what I say to myselft every single day. I've been learning this language for a couple of months too, and it's being a challenging and exiciting journey. Hope we all can achive our goals, and one day be able to speak and understand this beautiful language fluently. Btw, I'm Brazilian too.

I'm Japanese, and have been learning English since I was little. And I was dispatched to Indonesia as an expat. And it made me realize that understanding different culture deepens and enriches your life for sure.

She is an inspiration! As a new language learner, I was glad to listen to her personal experiences. Although English isn't my native language, I'll keep learning until I die.
This thing about bilinguals having greater empathy is totally true. it's amazing how knowing a second language changed me as a person. it has a great influence on your personality, it changes your identity on a cultural level.
I loved this video. As a Ukrainian, who was born in the east and had a lot of relations to the Russian culture, I had difficulties identifiying myself from the childhood. It got further since I started living in different countries, such as Germany, Thailand and Croatia. I absorbed a lot of cultures and I speak different languages, and living in Croatia now, I find it difficult to feel that I belong anywhere …but at the same time I am so grateful for my experiences and I truly believe that it made me much more compassionate and understanding towards different people. I hope we can all appreciate how different we are, cause it’s really beautiful ❤
This TEDx talk by J Lou is truly inspiring! Her personal experiences as a third culture kid add a unique and relatable perspective to the importance of learning a second language. The way she connects language-learning to brain science is fascinating and provides a compelling argument for everyone to pick up another language.
Hi Jlou, Dan , Mom , Dad .... I've been following your youtube channel ever since you started and enjoy it very much just because we both speak cantonese fluently , but we both look so different. When I do my yearly visit to HK ( birthplace of my wife) nothing brings more joy to me than when a wattress or salesperson compliments me on my Cantonese skills. ( thank you to my wife ). I'm 100% chinese, but I'm 3rd generation living i the United states. My mother spoke Chinese to me, but I always answered back in English. We were both binlinqual. Till I met my wife, she taught me the courage and skill to speak cantonese in public and although Its not perfect, The contrast of my rather Mixed race look person who speaks pretty good Cantonese is utterly amazing , empowering and something to be proud of. We once took a train to Florence from Paris, France, and we befriended a girl who asked us ..... "Why do you only speak one Language" ... as it turns out, and I've discovered, most europeans speak several languages and it is quite common. If I ever see that girl again , I can answer her with .... "I can speak 2 languages". !! I'm Richard and enjoyed your TED talk .....

Pretty good! I live in Brazil, but I was born in England. I have been studying English for a long time, I studied Spanish too and, now, I´m learning French. It´s a incredible experience. Congrats for the great talks @JLou0
Great video! It makes me think of my children: I'm from Austria and my partner is from Belgium and we live in Spain. Spain is their home and if you ask them, the children would say they're Spanish. They do get to visit our countries often but they feel very Spanish. It just makes it hard sometimes when I explain that in Austria or Belgium some things are done differently but they usually understand that. Both are still young so we'll see how they feel when they grow older. Love from Spain🌻
I like this video ❤. It's important to learn a second language, by learning second language, we can communicate with a foreigner and it's very fun for me. It can make our world wider. And also it can make us find job easily.
According to your classification, I am a 3.5 to 4 cultures person. I am basically a Hongkonger, a totally Chinese born in HK, able to read and write English and Chinese, speaking English, Mandarin and Cantonese. But following the trend of most HK new generation, I learnt Japanese as well. After studying Japanese, I can now appreciate and enjoy Japanese cultures, such as cuisines, music, fashion, drama and J Pop, etc. When I studied in Canada 30 years ago, I also found papers of education research in USA showing significant differences of cognitive skills for those knowing more than one language. People exposed to 3 languages / cultures would even be better. Actually, strongly backed by statistical data gathered, the research found these people are privileged and could show higher achievements in their lives. In fact, you can observe this fact by just verifying who are the CEOs leading the global enterprises in California where many residents are new immigrants. Instead of being rejected by societies, by breaking the cultural barriers and social norms, these privileged kids are actually leading the world, challenging the old traditions and bringing mankind towards the future.
This lesson to came to do understand to speak more languages it's important in life, your brain opens and you may get some opportunity in your life, thank you for this video
I like this video because she's right that we have to learn second language, especially English. I've been studying English for a long time, in my point of view English is very important to learn because we can interact with other people, not only domestically but also internationally
Learning a second language has totally changed how I see things. It’s amazing how it opens up new perspectives and helps you connect with people on a deeper level. Being able to chat in another language makes you more understanding and gives you a real feel for different cultures. I've found that it makes me more adaptable and open-minded, letting me catch little details I might have missed otherwise. This whole journey has really shaped who I am and how I vibe with the world. Honestly, i think everyone should dive into learning a new language!)
It's fine to accept the fact if learning languages will give ability to feel more empathy and care better about another people feeling, not even every person with this hobby able to express themselves in social life cause according to my point of view there are so many introverts find this type of activities as their habits in learning they but were just shy
I was struggling with my identity. Even tough I was in my own country, because my country has soo many different languages. Javanese was soo hard for me, I learned this language for more than 3 years. but the impact for me is really beneficial to survive as a minority. Soo, unlocking a new language is marvelous. you'll get a lot of advantage you haven't got before!!
Learn a little of English was definitely the best thing I did, since then I am being better paid for the same job, and, as you can realize, I don't know English very well
It is a great presentation of the life. I am French but I lived in a few other countries in the world until I was14 years. And now a the end of my life I am not feeling that I am French in France.
Love this inspiring talk and it really shows a different J lou to me. In Hong Kong, mixed-race people are generally considered to be more attractive and they could speak English well. So I would think J lou would be really proud of being mixed, but I found that she struggled and has gone through a lot under identity crisis. So never judge a person only by looking from the outside, each of us has our unconfident part.
I like this video because she's right that we have to learn a second language, especially English, English is my second language. I have been studying English for a long time, in my opinion English is very important to learn because we can interact with other people not only domestically but also internationally.
This video just popped up on my TH-cam homescreen and it is fascinating. This is the first time I heard of the term, "Third Culture Kid". It is a really intriguing topic. I am going to do a little research on the topic. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm from Brazil, and my journey learning english its being not easy, videos like this helps me a lot with my listening. I hope be able to got a natural conversation one day
as an Indonesian, y'all know that indonesia has many cultures and languages. I am exactly from java so my language was Javanese. but when I talk to my friend from another city I'll speak Indonesian. yeah from this video I realised learning and picking up a new language is important, moreover English as International Language. recently I've learned English for my new language. my reason? that's simple cuz it can make me communicate with all of people in this world. not only English rn I'm trayin' to learn Korean. This thing about bilinguals having greater empathy is totally true. you'll develop yourself better and u'll have a great personal brandin' as well.
While I'm not a third culture kid, I grew up in Armenia, speaking a language that only our nation speaks. Working in an international organization, I’ve seen firsthand how important a second language is for communication, thinking on your feet, and sharpening your thinking. What I find especially cool is that I get to teach others some Armenian words and phrases to Europeans and Americans. It feels amazing to have English as a second language while sharing something as unique as Armenian with people who are unfamiliar with it. It adds a special layer to my cultural identity.
It is cool to be able to speak multiple languages fluently like this beautiful girl in the video. Also, the identity of which country belongs to might be a tough question for person growing up in multicultural family. Anyway, like the cool girl said hopefully everyone can be proud to say where you come from and have chance to learn a second language.
I am from VN and currently i am also trying to learn and use two languages which are English and Chinese. I find that language is the most remarkable way to express your idea and connect to others. Moreover, everytime i feel intriguing when expressing myself in different languages. Thanks to this video for giving me a huge motivation to continue on the journey to acquire and explore Chinese
well, u r not alone as there are a lot of Eurasians in HK, girl. I went to an international school for KG and primary school. literally, most of us speak cantonese at school, even for those who are half blood. i dont see any TCK struggles they encounter, if yes, only minimal. if one is born in hk, there is genuinely no cultural shock. we watch cantonese tv programs every day, consuming chinese food and celebrating chinese festivals, in particular if either parent is a hongkonger. on the contrary, if a mixed-blood person or an ethnic foreigner moves back to his country of origin after s;pending years in hk since birth, as you said, he will become an outsider there, and cultural shock he experiences will even be more intense. Many ethnic foreigners who are not born in hk learn cantonese and putonghua for the purpose of survival.
The first part, about her experience as a "third child," definitely resonated with many audiences. However, the rest part about second language learning seemed a bit disconnected. Probably, it would be more relevant to explore the connection between language and identity.
Why you guys want to learn English? In my case, I love to conversation with other people who has the each cultural background. It's really hard to persist but finally we can make it
The biggest problem is that learning a second language is extremely time-consuming, but you can become bilingual more easily if you choose Esperanto as a second language. It opens your mind to lots of cultures, including cultures of smaller countries like Iceland and Hungary. You get to talk to people from many different cultures. The World Esperanto congress ended yesterday in Tanzania, so many Esperanto speakers from Europe, Asia, America got to learn a lot about Tanzanian culture and started to appreciate African cultures much more than the average person.
Some Hongkonger actually also are Third Culture kid when interacting with Mainland Chinese, I was always being teased by my mainland Chinese colleagues as 英軍 ( English soldier) as I am actually not one of them culturally
Her TED Talk was nice, but here’s the truth: she is NOT a Third Culture Kid. She is simply a biracial, mixed-race child living in China. Hong Kong is part of China. I challenge the TCK label because I am similar-half Vietnamese and half American, born and raised in America. Do you consider me a Third Culture Kid? Absolutely not! The term TCK inaccurately describes her; she is biracial. To be considered a TCK, one must live outside of their parent cultures. For example, she must live in other country like Vietnam beside China and France, I apologize for the criticism, but this is the fact.
'Where are you from?' the answer for her is 'I'm French Chinese, and I grew up and I live in HK.' As simple as that. If people don't understand that's their problem not yours. It's not that hard to understand.
I don't understand being so troubled by just being asked where you are from. It's quite natural to ask people where they are from almost anywhere in the world and keeping it private would surely spoil the atmosphere that would otherwise go on smoothly and peacefully.
@@张文文-s4t I mean, this could be very useful as I have a friend from Hong Kong. She does speak very good English but I could surprise her by speaking Cantonese
idk, I feel like she's spoken from a perspective where she's being looked down upon in hong kong as being a mixed race kid. The reality is that mixed race are usually deem prestigious in Asian society and I'm sure she's aware of that too considering her popularity in social media.
Yeah but she is a mixed girl with a french daddy and chinese-hk mum - that’s why she is multilingual and could speak in french (and basically the majority of hk educated people all speak English Cantonese Chinese). Don’t think it took her much effort considering her unique background.
It is very necessary for everybody to learn a second language. By learning a second language, we can make our word wider, and we can communicate with different nations around the globe. Moreover, a second language can help us to find a good job easily and we can level up our knowledge.

well, u r not alone as there are a lot of Eurasians in HK, girl.
I am glad to read every comment. It helps me to continue learning English 😊
I was quite shocked when she said my husband🙈she looks so young!
I am Chinese , it is really difficult for me to learning Spanish, but as she told us , learning a new language is really fascinating.
Emmm, maybe your grammer has something wrong, bro.
It's really hard to persist but finally we can make it
as an Indonesian who live in small village, bahasa indonesia is our second language
Such a smart and beautiful girl.
Some Hongkonger actually also are Third Culture kid when interacting with Mainland Chinese, I was always being teased by my mainland Chinese colleagues as 英軍 ( English soldier) as I am actually not one of them culturally
Excellent .
this video become my school english listening test😅
me too😢😢😢
I hate Ckk
ckk sucks😂😂
kaoyip sucks
exactly
The great message, learning new language is hard activity
U need to learn second language because you are greater than ❤
I watch every day your videos 😊❤😊❤😊❤
这一类的视频让我思考,我很喜欢。
'Where are you from?' the answer for her is 'I'm French Chinese, and I grew up and I live in HK.' As simple as that. If people don't understand that's their problem not yours. It's not that hard to understand.
she's so talented and beautiful
That's why I have too much empathy. 😊
I'm learning 2 languages,English and Korean as hobby.
How did you learn English? It's marvelous💯
I don't understand being so troubled by just being asked where you are from. It's quite natural to ask people where they are from almost anywhere in the world and keeping it private would surely spoil the atmosphere that would otherwise go on smoothly and peacefully.
I immediately said Australia, although I was born in the UK. No identify crisis here 😂🤣.
It is very necessary for everybody to learn a second language . By learning a second language.
Is that official school dress? so stylish!
what a funny dress up!! Blesser with half pant.
Bu keeping these words in minds already I'm learning a Foreign Language Spanish. I'm loving this Language. What r u learning?
French, Japanese and Spanish
I learnt E after I had listened this presentation
As a polyglot and half Chinese I agree, everyone should learn at least one language other than their native one. Btw I don't know any Chinese
Maybe you could learn Cantonese.
@@张文文-s4t I mean, this could be very useful as I have a friend from Hong Kong. She does speak very good English but I could surprise her by speaking Cantonese
My native is Hindi, I am fluent in English and learning French
Really stunning speaker
The problem of being fluent in multiple languages is that i forget words in one language.
Hey 👋🏻 friends how are you 💖🫂 im from India 😊 nice to see your comments 😊
idk, I feel like she's spoken from a perspective where she's being looked down upon in hong kong as being a mixed race kid.
Please no hate.
i am a canadian born chinese who was bullied constantly everywhere i go for being my own self.
English is my forth language, and I am learning my sixth language français
Wow ❤
