- In 1998, the neo soul movement was near its peak when a collective of like-minded artists came together to push the wave even higher. They called themselves the Soulquarians, and before the decade ended they’d help birth some of the modern era’s greatest recordings.

The Soulquarians: The Collaboration Between Erykah Badu, Questlove, D’Angelo, and More
Some of the thickest, tastiest, richest albums of our time were birthed in that place. Mad respect.
We truly loved delivering great music to your eardrums💯
F*ck yeah
And everytime I walk past electric lady studios...it bugs me out because the OUTSIDE of looks so normal. Nothing legendary about it at ALL.
And May THE LIGHT SHINE ON YOU!
@@tyrfree5733 have they not made it into some sort of cultural site, or museum...especially coz of Jimmy Hendrix
I lived in NYC '00-01when all of these cats were performing *together* at the Black Lily series for $5 every Sunday night. They would always take chances creatively on stage. It was incredible.
Damn.. Who did you like the most? Did you saw D'angelo and Bilal performing together?
You have got to be kidding me, this post made me so infinitely happy and sad at the same time.
Ahh wetlands
Dale Henry This what I call memories! It wasn't recorded so only those who were there have such great memories!
I went to a few of those $5 Blacklilly Wetlands sessions on Sundays.
Would be a great documentary film no bs
facts
Yo... forreal
King Vic +
Agreed
WORD
This needs to be a UNSUNG episode.
I agree.
BIG FACTS
agreed
Facts
Or better yet a 2 hour movie documentary.
Basically, all of Chappelle Show season 1 musical guests.
D. Carmo yup lol
And Chappelle’s “Block Party”
D. Carmo Dave wasn’t no fool! And a great decider of great music! Peace!
he talks about it in his jimmy fallon interview, about the electric lady sessions
Hey erykah badu was just doing her thing
All because of a MFn INTERVIEW....
From a magazine that barely exists anymore....
The collective was torn apart.
Ego is one hell of a drug. 🤔
Indeed it is, ahk... that damn ego with its illusions of false grandeur can have folks who might just be good at something ego-trippin' so hard that they end up never discovering how great they can be.
Exactly my thoughts! Ego has been the downfall of so many great collectives
ok! tragic.
Who you think was the one(s) ego trippin?
Yup. Ego is the devil.
I love the Soulquarians, this is basically Questlove interview for Red Bull in cartoon motion, it's great. But Pino Palladino should have been mentioned as well: his work on Voodoo, Mama's Gun and on Geto Heaven is top notch.
Other important figures include Charlie Hunter & Russell Elevado.
Word.
They weren't part of the collective. They were just acquaintances.
THANK YOU
The soulquarians were always a "what coulda been" story. Those were arguably the best albums of that era with the left hook of slum village following after. Every one of them are LEGENDS. It was like the gods coming together to create original work. One of my favorites of that time and I feel appreciation just started. The animations here were great and I don't think we'll see that kinda collab again. RIP okayplayer as a record company.
its sad that Pino Palladino wasn't mentioned , his jamerson (motown) style bass playing is what solidified the Soulaquarian sound.
Grant souldeep Allison Pino of course! And what about Russel Elevado?
you heard his daughters tracks Fabiana? I would recommend young thing and For You. He plays on some of those joints too
Grant souldeep Allison If you say so....he wasnt included because he didnt want or need to be
And they left out Roy Ayers as well.
Grant souldeep Allison He was a a major piece in D's Voodoo album and touring band but he was not a member of the Soulquarians.
I remember the magazine that had ALL the Soulquarians and it was an amazing time!!!
Vernell Thomas indeed it was
Vernell Thomas Vibe Mag
I think I still have this magazine... dammm what times...
I was honored to be given the opportunity to have been the stylist of the Soulquarian Image in that Vibe issue, it is a pleasure to see that it still resonates today.
Happy early birthday to Dilla!! Rest in peace, your music has touched the souls of countless people
great history insight thank you i learned something new
MrJj295 +
Dope music awesome soulquirans insight learned Classic music awesome sound soul neo and king and Queen
Nice! I did, too. Nice comment.
I'm about to go listen to Mama's Gun again, with a different perspective this time. I love that album
I love this video!!! I have always loved The Roots, ATCQ, Erykah, Jill Scott, Common and Slum Village. Their music is truly organic, and you can tell they put in so much work in their products. Absolutely electrifying ❤❤❤ I adore the animation too
I've incessantly listened to, and I own all of the albums mentioned. What a wonderful time for music, multiple eargasms on each project! I'm still vibing out to them today. Dilla will NEVER be forgotten! Gone too soon, but thank you for the music and legacy you left behind❤🎼🎧
Btw, if someone did a documentary chronicling this collective, it would be super dope! Just saying😏
I second that. A lengthy and extensive documentary is definitely needed about this great time in music.
shephrd Thirded.
eva!
I lived thru this era of music, mad to think it was 20 yrs ago. More documentation like this is needed good job.
I love how I knew all this back in the day..I'm just glad I lived through all those classic albums I don't think we will ever have anything that good again.
john1120 naw....we will...they probably said the same thing after the great run at Motown...
Donnomercy that's motown which they have an everlasting legacy bro..
john1120 You must be only looking at mainstream then.
john1120 you say that though a lot of the singers and rappers within this little group still make music to this day. Don't sleep on them
Great animation. Great narration. Thank you for this!
I would love to see a full documentary about them on Netflix.
This was the era. Artists who paid tribute to, and respected the past, while making that new NEW funk. Albums still in rotation. Jah Bless these souls.
R.I.P Prince we will never forget you.
Honestly, we need more than 6 minutes in regards to this important super-collective, deserving a full & detailed documentary.
I always wanted a 'SOULQUARIAN' tour and album. Can you imagine what show would be like?! And you know the album would have been beyond classic 🔥🔥🔥
There should be a mention about The Ummah also.
The Ummah was a music production collective, composed of members Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest, and the late Jay Dee (also known as J Dilla) of the Detroit-based group Slum Village. Occasional members included Raphael Saadiq, and D'Angelo. In addition to producing nearly the entirety of A Tribe Called Quest's fourth and fifth albums, the Ummah provided backing tracks and remixes for a notable array of hip hop and contemporary R&B artists, including Busta Rhymes, Whitney Houston, Keith Murray, the Brand New Heavies, Janet Jackson, and Jon B. The group was so named because two of its members (Tip and Ali) are devout Muslims. The word "ummah" is Arabic for "community", "nation", or "brotherhood". Generally, the term refers to the global Muslim population.
What a special place in time. I was a pre teen during this time. Even at a young age the soul music always pulled on my heart strings. That music has gotten me through some tough times, and I will be for ever greatful to her.
I'm grateful I was able this experience that movement in real time. It was brief but epic! Their collaborative effort sprung timeless music.
Prince, the Purple Yoda, like the song said :)
Loved the animation and story.
D'Angelo my favourite artist of all time. This wave is so influential to me personally because most of my favourite music and artists were a part of the Soulquarians and no doubt that this era Dilla "Jay Dee" was him at his finest when it came to his production.
If I remember correctly, Questlove said that Dilla's production style was the foundation of the sound they were going for.
R.I.P Dilla
P.S. Common's Geto Heaven with Macy Gray was a horrible decision lol
It should have been a full, feature length, documentary!
Really interesting. Only recently have I tried to get into neo soul, starting with voodoo. Voodoo is so fucking good, questlove killed the drums. I had no idea dilla and everyone else we're so connected. Great vid
fuzzydunlop45 dangelo played a lot of drums on voodoo too
gotta check out Mama's Gun if you haven't
oh really? shit what cant that man do. do you know which songs he did?
damn i just looked it up some reviews of it, it sounds interesting. def adding it to my list, thanks mane
fuzzydunlop45 would also recommend the first two albums by Meshell Ndegeocello, Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion.
Man, how could something so imaginative and magical implode? Nonetheless, glad such music exists.
Wow 3/24/2020 this is on my feed. So glad.
I miss this group every time I listen to them...Gone too soon.
most iconic collective in hip hop
Amazing. Thanks for this. This is the music I grew up to ❤️❤️❤️
My mama used to play all there music back then So of course I love them This is so dope to me
Woooowwww....this is fascinating. How all their projects were so interwoven. How cool
When Hubs, Storch, Scratch and Rahzel part of The Roots. Dice Raw showing up once in a while.
Much like the Funk Brothers, Booker T & the MGs, MFSB, Hi Records Rhythm Section, and Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section that came before them, the Soulquarians influence is still being felt to this day. Much respect.
When Dilla lives in this planet. No Dilla No Soulquarians.
wow
SSAEKI The Stray Cat word
Preach!!
Indeed !
SSAEKI The Cat wise words has been spoken!!!! He was the heart of the group, the single handed inspiration for most of their work
I love the illustrations / animation
Vibe turned them against each other when we gon stop letting these people ruin our legacies
Egos turned them against each other not Vibe magazine.
And who are ‘these people?’ You know Vibe was founded and owned by Quincy Jones, yeah? You trying to sound clever but there ain’t nothing there.
These people? Vibe is Quincy Jones publication which is quite ironic seeing as he's one of the most revered Black producers in musical history.
@@EdwardRicketts1 so when we gonna stop tearing ourselves apart.
To think I have all but one of these albums mentioned in this lil doccie...All the albums from Common's Like Water for Chocolatte, Bilal's First Born,Things Fall Apart,Voodoo,Badu's Baglady.
I've always seen ELECTRIC STUDIOS on the sleeves but never new the actual history behind all those great albums...im gonna dig in my crates and give them all a listen again, maybe even go buy the one i dont have which is SLUM VILLAGE.
THANK YOU✌🏿🇿🇦
nobody talks about this! this meeting lead to so many important points of hip hop and neo-soul history.
Very glad to see pitchfork doing a documentary on the music I live for
This video it's a blessing!!!👏
This was my coming of age year...I remember that article and this whole "musical movement"...A Beautiful time
All I can say is wow. Always love to hear classics like these were made.
That explains perfectly the story of why I love music so much especially growing up in the 90s right in to the 2thou..
voodoo is my favorite album of all time!!!!! sorry stevie.
Probe Rok voodoo is the cloeset of 2nds to "Talking Book" for me.
YES! I love that you all covered this 😫
Short..comprehensive..entertaining. DOPE VIDEO!
Great music bumped all of those albums all through high school
such a great work! Thank you Pitchfork for this piece. this is the reason we go on TH-cam
A truly magical moment in music! 💯 All of those albums are amazing 💪🏾
One of the Greatest Recording Collectives Ever!!!
The artwork is beyond beautiful. 😍
Thank you, this is basically half the soundtrack to my 20's
This vid was so well done. It was hell to find it again, though. Tried to share later but it wasn't in my Likes. Needs more tags! 💓
this video is amazing, thanks for sharing and preserving this musical history
Wow. Idk why this popped up but I’m glad it did. That was very insightful
I remember this era so vividly all the midnight showcases they would do it was an exciting time to see a new wave of Soul music be recreated it still needs to be re created
I have waited so long for this!!!!!
Damn... more people need to see this video. Been telling these new hip hop fans dangelo and erykah badu were the grandparents of hip hop for yearssss
Thank you guys for this super video!
I love how they added correctly Premo’s MPC 60ll 🤟🏽
This was a dope watch.. Would be nice to turn into a documentary for sure
Great illustration and graphic design. I fully agree. This is a great short film/documentary. Submit it for an Oscar!!
Wow, that was a nice lil era of music right there man. Roots Things Fall Apart is prob still one of my favorite albums. "Hip Hop" (Love of My Life) f. Common was my shit. I remember being in Philly when that album dropped and they performed a free concert in the Gallery Mall there... That was dope and I'll never forget that experience.
Back then, the quality of music was infectious with artists collabing and trying to outdo each other. Shame today's artists lack that talent and originally that sets them apart from everyone else with the exception of only a handful of them trying to be different.
The. Dream. Team.
A.M. say it again man💯
I have hard copies of each related project... this could have been one of if not the best collaborative alliances in music ever!
Let’s not forget bassist Pino Palladino
It would be very nice if they get their own biopic film, Real Talk.
THIS story needs it's own Netflix/Docuseries/Documentary type deal. All that talent comin 2getha like that?! NEVA knew all those albums were bein made @ the same time in such an iconic place, Dope story...
The O.G. collective lives on through 9th Wonder, TDE, Dreamville, Odd Future, Good Music, these funky groups out of Australia/New Zealand, etc..
Shirley Toussaint Beast Coast, UA, Flatbush Zombies, Pro Era (R.I.P. STEEZ) ect..
All four of those albums are timeless
No mention of Pino Palladino? :(
He wasn't in the collective. He was an associated session musician.
great video on some of my favorite albums!!
Spanky Alford on guitar too. Beautiful ❤️
D'Angelo and QuestLove. We need this now 💯💜🙏

This is the music that changed my life.
Amazing animation, cool music. I really enjoy the history. Congrats 👏
That was awesome! This should be a documentary! But cartoon of the artists was cool!
Love the animations!

Christopher Aizen true on TH-cam or spotify ❤
This was dope! Though the end felt a bit rushed. I wanted to know more about the fallout. I never heard anything about that before.
R.I.P J Dilla and Jimmy Hendricks yall are still missed.
comecorrect1 I wonder where music would be if they were still alive and Marvin GAYE jr.
comecorrect1 - Jimi Hendrix.. next time come correct when you spell the God's name.
I love the way you articulated the story I love this story you did a great job thank you
Dope dope dope!!! Thank you for this insight.
This movement birthed JSOUL .... i was conceived in 1996 and born in 2001. Yeah you may laugh, cause you did not do your math. ✊✌
J Soul 1996=7-God/completion, 5 years between conception and birth=power/refinement and year of birth 2001=3- Understanding...Bong Bong as RZA would say.
Y’all deep AF.
Hefty respect for this, came out crazy dope!1 Love/Bless/Peace
Great video ...some of my favorite albums and artist ...
