Paak does one of the hardest things there is to do on the drums: plays very fast, very smooth one handed 16th notes on the hi hat. The late Jeff Porcaro was the master at this. Paak does it very, very well, and it's something that few drummers can do. And it doesn't draw attention to itself. It fits and blends in unobtrusively to the song.
The best tiny desk ever, Anderson is so smooth and so talented. The origins of his influence are so varied yet so evident, it’s jazzy, bluesy, old skool R&B, disco and what you get listeners hear as a hip hop beat is just a beat from all of the above influences. Long live King Anderson
I love how Anderson always sounds like he's enjoying himself while he's singing. That totally added to his performance. One of the best tiny desk concerts out hereeee 🤩🤩🤩
4:55 - 5:01 "aint nobody holding you back.." The skill to play that rhythm, stop the cymbal, and come in on beat with the high hat is so smooth you don't even notice it. While singing.

Hes one of those people that just eminates joy wherever he goes. That's what makes some of the best Tiny Desk Concerts. Mac Miller was like that too. TDCs are all about musicians just loving every moment they're on stage and having fun playing music.
I saw him live at bonarroo and literally can’t envision anyone topping him as a performer ever. Drumming, playing bass and never missing a note. The energy was insane and he fed off it like fuel. So insanely talented
“Hey dad, why is my sister named rose?” “Because your mother loves roses” “Thanks dad” “No problem, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert”
Paak is genuinely one of the greatest performers of our generation. Nobody does it like this anymore. The fact this is all live one take and it sounds like it was recorded then mixed/mastered in a studio is insane
Yeah I love these type of musicians who don’t need any after effects and heavy mixing! Personally a big fan of John Mayer and his music too is just pure music, little to no computer-stuff, just amazing musicians!
@@epsteinsnoose5401 personally I also love jazz but I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I think the original comment is just saying that .Paak is one of the only guys who does it like this in his genre (R&B/hip-hop), which is nowadays a lot more mainstream
This needs to be emphasized. His feel for time when singing and when playing the drums are two Different feels! He's processing and outputing two different feels at once. This demands so much talent! Just doing one is hard. He does both at once and almost flawlessly! Godaym!
It's as if he's so good at the drums that what us mere mortals have to devote all of our attention to is just I background process for him, like walking or riding a bike
This kind of thing is always so interesting to me. Playing anything and singing at the same time is SOOOO hard. One of the two has to be able to be played without thinking. It takes so much talent and raw skill. I get a newfound respect for anyone who can do that at this level.
Never heard of this guy before I stumbled on this today. This has to be probably one of the most complete performances I have ever heard. Love every minute of it.
Yo! When you look at the comments and see how many people have come back to this performance more than a bunch of times… you realize how true this comment is…🥰🥰🥰
And that baseline on Come Down is straight-up Sly & the Family Stone, If You Want Me to Stay and works so well with Anderson .Paak's voice. Soooo funky!!!!
Actually i listened to his song suede like WAAAAAAAY back, didn't really think anything of it.. Just had kind of a phase with that genre. So when I heard it here I was like "hold up!" And then I found out he made Who R U? Too... So I knew him without knowing him 🤣😅
at exactly 10:01 my life changed! I never knew something could sound so beautiful. When he said keep going. It was the musical gods flowing through at that moment.
Honestly with the right hand pattern (even though its 4/4) in this one, singing does become a challenge. Its easy with quarter notes as you've got space to sing
Check out all the Tiny Desks mentioned here, and Tash Sultana's as well. I also love to watch Hot Ones, some of the guest there really give this wholesome positive vibe (Tommy Chong, Big Sean, Jack Black, Terry Crews for example)

@@calilyricist24 There aren't many Drummers who can play that Rhythm while singing. Its so much easier to smash on the drums like in most metal or rock songs, this right here that Anderson is doing is literally what the Drum set was invented for.

Want to point out something super small but really awesome. At about 1:08 the bassist makes a tiny mistake, immediately smiles (acknowledging it to his bandmates) and doesn't skip a beat or lose confidence at all. There will always be mistakes in live music, regardless of who it is, but what separates the pros from the rest is how you recover and this example is a MASTERCLASS of exactly how to do that.

Im glad to see people appreciating how much they've achieved despite being blind.
Johnny Boyle LOL
Johnny Boyle hahahahagagagagagaggag im so done!!!!

Anderson Paak. X Tom Misch?
you should collab
Burna Boy-Ye.😎
Tom was in the right place
I love how Anderson always sounds like he's enjoying himself while he's singing. That totally added to his performance. One of the best tiny desk concerts out hereeee 🤩🤩🤩
Check out Tank and the Bangas on tiny desk concerts...
The best
Actually the best tiny desk, objectively speaking
I really want to see him live
All things considered it is not my favorite. That spot goes to either Tank, Chika or Tobe
It’s incredible how much better this tiny desk concert sounds compared to the studio recordings
true
Tautoko bro, totally agree. Wife and me both agree that this paired back live tiny desk is superb. And superior to the album.
This should be at Spotify!
The NPR sound engineers are at the top of their game.
That first “your heart don’t stand a chance” sends shivers down my spine every time
oh man same here, and when the groove comes in too! amazing stuff
I come back to this regularly for that first beat 😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰
same 😊
It always will
this version of heart dont stand a chance is just so incredible
I knowwww I need it on spotify rn!

Baby making music 😅
Think it goes to show you don’t need to overproduce music to make it fantastic
Suede too
4:55 - 5:01 "aint nobody holding you back.." The skill to play that rhythm, stop the cymbal, and come in on beat with the high hat is so smooth you don't even notice it. While singing.
Jawan English EXACTLY! I play and sing but not at the same time like Paak. .. that shit is hard af and he just killin it so smooth
Jawan English with practice any skill can be mastered. He makes it look easy. I play Drums *AND* I sing but never have I done both at the same time. He makes it look so easy
Jawan English with practice any skill can be mastered. He makes it look easy. I play Drums *AND* I sing but never have I done both at the same time. He makes it look so easy
I point that out every single time. Really all of his drumming in this set impressed me
thats what Im saying man.. deeeeeep pockets and his chops are so much better than he shows
Still one of the best Tiny Desk Concerts..8 years later. Anderson is 🔥
Dunno if it’s just me but he has one of the nicest smiles I’ve seen
It's easy when you find success with your passion. He hasn't worked a single day in his life now and forever.
Hes one of those people that just eminates joy wherever he goes. That's what makes some of the best Tiny Desk Concerts. Mac Miller was like that too.
TDCs are all about musicians just loving every moment they're on stage and having fun playing music.
Mesmerizing smile 🤩🤩🤩
best teef in the game
One might even say BEST TEETH IN THE F*ING GAME
Honestly this performance is Grammy worthy. there should be a category for live one take music.

I never realized the amount of views this had, I just kept coming back as a Paak fan
Probably the live Suede. That was insane
because it is insane
I saw him live at bonarroo and literally can’t envision anyone topping him as a performer ever. Drumming, playing bass and never missing a note. The energy was insane and he fed off it like fuel. So insanely talented

“Because your mother loves roses”

Good One
Haha this is beautiful
Marcus Brewer has para mood o
ahah very nice
Him drumming and singing at the same time so effortlessly is so captivating.
He would win another Grammy if he did an unplugged album ... I honestly believe that!
I’ve watched this 149 times and still amazed. Has no business being this ggood.
Paak is genuinely one of the greatest performers of our generation. Nobody does it like this anymore. The fact this is all live one take and it sounds like it was recorded then mixed/mastered in a studio is insane
surely bruno is similar too. theres a reason why anderson wanted to work with him
Yeah I love these type of musicians who don’t need any after effects and heavy mixing! Personally a big fan of John Mayer and his music too is just pure music, little to no computer-stuff, just amazing musicians!
Jazz is still alive and wel, you just gotta search a little!!!
@@epsteinsnoose5401 personally I also love jazz but I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I think the original comment is just saying that .Paak is one of the only guys who does it like this in his genre (R&B/hip-hop), which is nowadays a lot more mainstream
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This needs to be emphasized. His feel for time when singing and when playing the drums are two Different feels! He's processing and outputing two different feels at once. This demands so much talent! Just doing one is hard. He does both at once and almost flawlessly! Godaym!
It's as if he's so good at the drums that what us mere mortals have to devote all of our attention to is just I background process for him, like walking or riding a bike
Facts
You honestly needed to end your comment with yes Lord.
His brain is living its best life, that's for sure
This kind of thing is always so interesting to me. Playing anything and singing at the same time is SOOOO hard. One of the two has to be able to be played without thinking. It takes so much talent and raw skill. I get a newfound respect for anyone who can do that at this level.
I was never a religious man, but now I pray to God the first post pandemic NPR concert we get is Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak, aka Silk Sonic.
Yeah imma starting prayin too
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS
Never heard of this guy before I stumbled on this today. This has to be probably one of the most complete performances I have ever heard. Love every minute of it.
You should give his other songs a try!! Definitely worth it. One of my favorite artists of all time.
🎵Imma leave the door open🎵
His voice sounds like what fresh coffee in the morning with a joint would sound like. Can't wait for that Silk Sonic album with Bruno.
Wait so they’re making a whole album together
Someone said that it sounds like what Sprite tastes like, and I agree.
That sounds like stank breath. zZZDon't do that to my baby daddy.
trip to Amsterdam once lockdown is over then
Do they have a release date for Silk Sonic album?
This was released 4 years ago and it still amazes me how AP is drumming while rapping/singing simultaneously.
And he doesn't miss a single beat or word
His rhythm and timing on those drums though while singing
Klay Niltasuwan 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Impeccable bruh
the groove is top notch
And smiling
Anderson.Paak is flawless in this! He makes playing the drums and singing simultaneously seem effortless.

Anderson Paak has that rare 70s soul voice and I just cant get enough of it
His yes lawd always reminds me of a James brown kind of ad lib, I definitely see that influence.
Him and Leon Bridges bringing back that old sound. Sa-Ra Creative Partners had a good sound but they were more synth funk.
And that baseline on Come Down is straight-up Sly & the Family Stone, If You Want Me to Stay and works so well with Anderson .Paak's voice. Soooo funky!!!!
@@iamhereblossom1588 Totally!!
Welcome to all the new Anderson paak fans. Glad you all are finally here... enjoy
Thanks!!! ive been looking for this sound for years
Actually i listened to his song suede like WAAAAAAAY back, didn't really think anything of it.. Just had kind of a phase with that genre. So when I heard it here I was like "hold up!" And then I found out he made Who R U? Too... So I knew him without knowing him 🤣😅

y’all gotta talk ab how disgustingly talented anderson is. drumming and singing and groovin. makes it look easy
You should see that man in concert
but don't I make it look easy
Don't I make it look good
agree, you should watch thundercat on this same series too, its unbelievable how he can play the bass like that and sing at the same time
Almost as smooth as Harry Tröger!
Is it to late to mention hosier and his ability to play a drone and melody on a guitar +chords and still be able to sing at the same time... no ,, ok.
playing drums and singing is hard. paak is talented!
Not that hard. I honestly think playing with the guitar is harder.
Depends on what youre playing
It all depends of the rhytm of playing.
Right. A simple 4/4 beat like this isn't hard at all though. I like seeing singers who play drums though. Aaron Gillespie is my favorite.
Honestly with the right hand pattern (even though its 4/4) in this one, singing does become a challenge. Its easy with quarter notes as you've got space to sing
My old pt had me listening to this back in ‘22 after my surgery and I’ve been hooked every since , he’s definitely multitalented in so many ways
the bass tone is so beautifully groovy on these tracks.
Honestly like all these versions better than the recordings.
same here.totally.
My SVS Sub likes it a LOT
I caught myself smiling during the whole session. This guy has such a positive vibe, and he is pretty talented. I think I'm in love.

omg same!
how can anyone not love this guy? That grin. That voice. That smooth. omg.
ha, the grin especially. Has an old ass soul. Reminds of some smooth-talking old-timers from when I was a kid.
Phyoomz are you talking about Chris Rock?
Especially when the main groove starts in Heart Don't Stand a Chance, that "ooh..." with the grin always gets me.
Iam Theman also drumming and singing is the hardest combination. Everyone automatically has got to respect his playing and his bands musicianship even if they somehow don't like his music.

Anderson .Paak is one of the few artists that is better live, then recorded.
I'm not sure his voice POPS like rice krispies in a good studio.
Zetsu Tsuletsu popping like Rice Krispies in a bowl of sprite from McDonald’s
I know right, his records sound terrible
LP too
This isn't overproduced pop. Musicians need to be seen and heard live to to be fully appreciated, and these gentlemen are musicians
So underrated .Paak is easily one of the best R&B artists right now
Or Sonder maybe
The Holy Father. I'd probably put frank ocean at number one, but paak isn't far from 1st tho, for me he's 2nd
Jacob Grill that not REALLY r&b.. it is more of an Organic neo-soul/ hip-hop fusion...

You mean...what drummers usually do in every song?
@@calilyricist24 Haha I guess.. but his one handed Hi-Hat work on the first song is insanely impressive!
@@calilyricist24 There aren't many Drummers who can play that Rhythm while singing. Its so much easier to smash on the drums like in most metal or rock songs, this right here that Anderson is doing is literally what the Drum set was invented for.
@@razatiger22 metal and rock are difficult as well, don't discredit them. Though you are right in saying a lot of drummer can't play that rhythm while singing.
@@mila9133 Its not even the Rhythm thats hard, its his perfect weight that he applies with every drum hit to create a perfect pitch. The reason i brought up metal and hard rock is because they just wail on the drums, which isn't what the drum set is intended for.
