Gladiator, known in Japan as Ougon no Shiro (黄金の城 lit. "Golden Castle"?), was a 1986 arcade game developed by Allumer and published by Taito. It was followed by a sequel titled Blandia.
The player controls a gladiator/knight named Great Guaranos as he walks through a castle. Moving the joystick left and right moves Great Guaranos left and right, and up and down is used to position Great Guaranos's shield. The game's three buttons correspond to a high, medium, and low attack with Great Guaranos's sword. Gladiator consists of 4 Stages. The first level is the 'Underground Chamber', 2nd is the 'Brick Corridor', 3rd is the 'Roof Top' stage, and the 4th stage is called the 'Mysterious 4-D World'. Your reward for completing the game is to enter the "Treasure Place".
Gameplay is split between two modes; in the "obstacle" mode, Great Guaranos walks forward, and the player must use the sword and shield to defend him from bats, fireballs, arrows, shuriken, and other flying hazards. The "obstacle" mode is broken up by a "fight" mode, in which Great Guaranos must fight against another, similarly-armored knight. In both modes, an un-defended hit to Great Guaranos knocks off part of his armor (his helmet for a high hit, his breastplate for a medium hit, and his leggings for a low hit), and a subsequent hit to the same area kills him.
Your warrior "Great Guaranos" can generate a temporary force field during the obstacle course phases (when weapons and bats fly at him) by rapidly moving the shield up and down. This can only be done once per level. During the combat phases, Great Guaranos can become invincible (flashing golden) for a short time. To do this, you must gather 4 swords in the obstacle course phase by striking them and then bending to pick them up from the floor. This will turn his sword red. Then, during the combat phase, strike the opponent's shield several times. After the invincibility has ended, Great Guaranos' armor will be repaired also. This can only be done once per level.
On the third level during the obstacle course, Great Guaranos can jump up onto the railing behind him and avoid all the flying weapons.
To do this, press and hold the shield up when there is a break in the railing. Shurikens thrown during the obstacle course (level 1) are worth bonus points if they are struck just after they appear, as opposed to when they circle back towards Great Guaranos. Most enemy warriors will stop fighting and "jump for joy" when they remove your chest plate. You can defeat a difficult enemy by letting him remove your chestplate, and then strike him twice in the same spot while he's dancing.
The third green axe knight on the third level will often freeze up (cease moving) after some time. If you are having trouble beating him, stay out of range and strike at his weapon and shield until this happens. You may then attack without the knight attacking or defending. Some enemies swords may be broken, rendering them helpless. Simply strike the weapons about 25 times to break them. The following enemies weapons can be broken.. (Stage 1) Solon, Irene (Stage 2) Zaid, White Armored Giant You can pick up the mace of the White Armored Giant in stage 2. The mace has a much stronger attack than the sword, but cannot break other weapons.

25 years searching for this game and finally I found it. Never knew the name. My cousins and I used to play this when we were 11, 12 years old, in a small bar near my grandma's country house for hours and hours! THANK YOU!

I agree 100%. When first saw it, I could not believe such games exist. It is one of the reasons I became a programmer. Whoever the people that made this game, were real masters of the art. Unique game.

hehe tell me about it, i found a big bag of rainbows end tokens at the dump, my older sister took me to rainbows end for my birthday and i put nearly all of them in this machine , fancy throwing away video game tokens, they cost about $2 for 6 back then , the bag must of had about 200-300 tokens lol
I've been trying to remember the name of this game for almost 30 years. It was so much fun and it was at my arcade in the 80's. One trick I found was to play it with two people where Player 1 controls the guy and the sword while the other one just keeps moving the shield's joystick up and down to get the magic forcefield.

This game was hard. I always liked the mechanics of the shield blocking hi,mid, and low. They should remake this game.
Zelda 2 on NES has a more simplified version of this with just high and low guard.

I loved this game as a kid, coming home from school, I would stop by the arcade and drop all my lunch money into the quarter slots. The best memories. I couldn’t remember the name of this game, I am so glad to have found it so quick with a basic search, you tube rocks & this game is the best!! I wish I could find it on SP4 to purchase and play.

I first saw this in an arcade way back. That you could place blows and dislodge armor I remembered. Ahead of its time and awesome.
Waited 34 years to see the epic final showdown (never saw the Boss until today) and the end credit scene. Wow so he gets all that gold, epic from start to finish.

I am a community college professor who teaches a class based upon the late Roman republic up through the crisis of the third century. I can plainly state that this game is a virtual history lesson. Many of the fighting styles employed are period correct.
Additionally, the god he gives praise too, as well as the riches gained at the end are correct.

Somehow, I always found this game cold and brutal. It evokes the smell of clashing metal, bloody sweat, desperation, and death. Maybe it's the stark hallways you trudge through, the harsh clangorous sound effects, the sampled grunts and moans, or the repeated blows and slow loss of your protective armor foreshadowing your likely demise...
Oh that's what was so great about it. It gave you such a feeling of life and death. The thing is... there was a time in history when this kind of thing really happened! Gladiators in armor fighting just like this!

Thanks for posting this! I remember playing this back in the 80’s and I could never remember what it was called and anytime I described it to friends they didn’t know it!?!! For years I thought it was called ‘Great Guardians’ and that’s probably why I’ve never been able to find out anything about it so again THANKS!..
I used to beat this game all the time. The trick is never attacking the enemies, but their weapons, until they break. Fat guy, defend the fireballs, get close and strike in the middle. Amazon, same thing.The final boss is the only real challenge. You have to kill the golden armor warrior by breaking his shield then fight the skeleton aiming high at a distance. Strike in the middle to keep him at distance then alternate between high low strikes. Hold your shield high. If you do everything right on the final boss you get a 50% chance of beating him.
I never knew what the hell I was doing when playing this as a kid, but it sure did get a lot of quarters from me.

Gladiator was awesome for the fact that you could pretty easily get good enough to make an entire playthrough on one quarter. I used to spend hours at my local Minute Mart in Battle Ground, WA just standing at the Gladiator machine and lazily beating it over and over, high as a kite.
I've never seen or heard of this game, but for 1986 it was certainly quite advanced.
My memory is of much better graphics and details.
Never the less, great great game which unlike most arcade games can actually be won.
We always went for a high score, knocking as much armor as possible since killing was too easy. At least at the early stages.
Most of us did not make it to the end but one kid who was the best would simply carry on our game.
Shamed to say I too used to spend what in today's value, is about 60$, on each visit at these hellish, dark, haunting arcade places.
This was the game that made me realize I enjoyed men. I would always expose myself to the sword and let the other men chip away at my armor until I was completely nude.

Um, we had different experiences with this game lol 😂. Regardless, I’m glad you have pleasant memories of this game as well. When you’re a kid, you think it will last forever. I was 9 years old when this game was released in 1986. I used to love to play it at the local movie theater 🎭 by my house. Arcade halls, lazor tag, roller skating rink, movies with friends, Disneyland…where did it all go? I’ll be 45 this year, and sometimes I swear I can feel my life slipping through my hands 🙌..

The reason this game was never included in either Taito Legends compilations is because this game was authored by Allumer, but released by Taito.

I remember this as if it was yesterday. The tricks not shown. If you defeat the amazon (4th character), by knocking off all parts of her armor. She will give up and hand over her sword. A very hard task. Most of the weapons can break if you hit them as you defend yourself.

@@TonySylvesterOhio I totally saw that too. I'm pretty sure this dude punched in some invincibility code before start up. One of my favs back in the day though. I was 11 when this came out. Pumpin' crazy loot into her.
Not really a play-through as much as a "Hey! Watch me mash buttons for 10 minutes!" Watching somebody plow through a game while invincible is not really anything anybody wants to watch. If you're going to record a play-through, possibly learn how to play the game first. The sheer panic when one of the stone "rollers" would appear and you're holding the shield down while maniacally mashing your low swing button to destroy it before it crushes you against the back of the screen. This game was spectacular for its time. So many quarters spent. Here are some tips: If you stand back and swing your weapon to hit their weapon, you can break their weapon. The mace rocks for destroying opponents shields and, if I remember right, the only weapon that will break the last guy on level 3's weapon. When fighting the female warrior in the first level, you can remove her breastplate, then remove her corset, then - if you can time it just right and hit her right in the chest - you can remove her bra. To kill the final skeleton, the only place you have to hit it is in the head. Good times... good times...
