My Mom bought me my 1st guitar at Bob Gand Music in Deerfield Il. I took my first guitar lessons frorm Gary's father, Bob Gand. A little later on , I used to go to Gary Gand music in Northfield, IL. I bought guitar's, amps and studio gear from Gary. Very cool guy and down to Earth person. And here I am 50 years later, still playing guitar! Awesome video.
You can see me and Billy playing together in the Amazon documentary "My Name Is Lopez" backing folk rock legend Trini Lopez (If I had a Hammer / Lemon Tree, etc).
This is one of the most amazing stories I've seen on TH-cam, the piano, the organ with Leslie, the guitars and the incredible house and the history of the Rands. Wow, thanks for sharing, I can't imagine what the gold top will go for but it's bound to be a lot of money. Good luck, hope you find the right buyer and thanks for sharing!
I totally agree. All the right ingredients. Perfect neck, neck angle, frets, ABR etc. as well as cheaper because it’s not a burst but exactly the same except the 59-60 neck and frets. If you’re looking at a guitar for how it plays this is it for LPs.
Native San Diegan here. La Jolla is the most beautiful part of San Diego. Enjoyed its beaches many times growing up. The Gands seem like great people. 😃🔥👍
I want to hang with the two of you and rock and roll all day. But sleep at night, i just turned 64 and not full of energy. Sending a bunch of love from tomato patch texas. God bless all.
We would make copies of the copies ... had to have those leadsheets. Now, I bought the Ebooks (volumes 1-4) and have them all on a large iPad to use on gigs.
What a beautiful home, that was one helluva a dream home, and that guitar is stunning, just hearing it being playing through tha jango dumble in a live setting must be something else....
I live in Cathedral City, and we decided to get some ice cream in Palm Springs. While eating my ice cream across the street I saw these guys playing some cool tunes at a small club off of Tahquitz McCallum, downtown.
I have a photo of my mom playing piano in her band. One guy is playing a gold top Les Paul. The photo is dated 1962...I wonder where that guitar is now!
Wow, Wow, Wow and Wow I believe says it all. Wow regarding the Gand's; Wow regarding their musical life together; Wow regarding the Home; and Wow regarding the '57 Gold Top
I have a copy The Real Book from 1982. Pretty sure it was legal by then as it was required for jazz performance majors! I had to go look at Donna Lee, but by the 5th edition they had recopied them all in the same handwriting. At school they told us about its history as a black market item!
No pun intended this is pure gold! And what a couple! These two folks are the salt of the earth. I could listen to their stories for days! This ranks as a top episode for me.
Fantastic everything about this video is what I'm all about , Art, Antiquities, Music , I was very eccentric when I was younger but I had to go to school to learn how to be a genuine real guy. Thank you so much for putting this on almost fell out of my chair
The Baldwin Acrosonic model 947 (Scandinavian Natural Walnut) is a lovely and rare piano. Acrosonic was Baldwin's top-of-the-line upright piano, featuring the best quality Sitka spruce soundboard available in an upright piano. Many components of this model were higher quality than a standard Baldwin upright (which does not share the Acrosonic name). The 947 is considered a 'spinet' at 36" tall. This is the shortest upright piano, compared to a 'console' (40"-42" tall) or a studio (45" or higher, depending on brand and model), but featured a greater volume of sound than many taller pianos because the front kneeboard featured fabric (like a speaker cover) openings that allowed more sound to exit the piano from the front instead of just bouncing off the wall behind the piano. Interestingly, the back of these was covered in the same fabric as the kneeboard, not revealing the naked soundboard and ribs like on a typical upright piano. Beautiful people, beautiful home, and fantastic story.
What a great team. Super guitar and another great video. Thanks for these. In a world full of nonsense these two are refreshing👍 Cool pad too. Love the artwork. Now that’s the sound 😄Perfect! Thanks Aaron.
Oh wow been a while (20 years maybe) since I popped in your store. Damn I need to do this and see if I can get a look at that sweet LP. Dont need to touch it just want to witness one. :)
I picked up a 1959 Gibson les Paul cherry sunburst new its original case from an old lady for 200 dollars, and I gave it to Tory Slusher, the best guitarist in the world. She can actually play guitar.
I had a copy of the Real Book in the mid 70s. It was all lead sheets. There were no transcribed solos in it. A book called Spaces was all transcribed jazz solos.

The greatest lifelong husband / wife musician team story I've even seen. Joan and Gary are so lucky in life, love, and music! Awesome!
Even through my tinny laptop speakers, I could hear that spinet absolutely singing in that gorgeous room. Beautiful acoustics.
This was just too figgin' cool! Incredible people...amazing home...the gear was like the cherry on top! I really enjoy the travel episodes.
57- 58 Gold tops Seem to be some of the best sounding Les Paul's. This one is a real FIND!
JOAN GAND !! We are keyboard friends online!! Thought she looked REAL familiar!! I was jamming with you Joan when you were on B3 in the video..!

Joan was GREAT!!
Wouldn't you love to have come across two of these, a lefty and a right handed, with tags. Yeah, I sure did. A collectors dream.
Very cool. How could you not end it with Aaron playing that bad boy through Jango.
Talk about a unicorn! To be that clean an unmolested 66 years later is unreal.
Somewhere, Joe Bonamassa has just woken up with his Spidey sense tingling………..
The organ is the greatest instrument devised by man.
Ms Joan on the B3- outta sight!
I never noticed how low the Gibson logo on the headstock was on a 57. Sounds beautiful.
the logo is only low on the early '57 PAF equipped les paul gold tops
These ppl and their house were flat-out cool!

Those Specials and Juniors are AMAZ-ING, but nothing really beats a ‘57 Goldtop. 😎😁
I really wanted to hear Gary wind it up in his house. That...would have been nice.
TB was on a tight schedule, but you can find me online with the Gand Band. I sound the same no matter what guitar I'm playing. 😎

I got my Real Book back in the early 80's thru a friend who went to Berklee. I knew it had originated up there but I didn't know the whole story.
I had a Baldwin Acrosonic... It was made by Gibson in the 60's... I loved it!!!
Loved that info about the real book history!
They even showed up in "Tin pan alley" London, £50.
A life story that brings joy, thanks.
Amazing how the first PAF covers had sharp edges. New molds back than. The 60´s ones are much rounder. Cool stuff.
The best episode man. AMAZING!

I used to see the Gands play around Chicago before they departed for the West Coast!
Played a showcase in Madison Wisconsin in the mid-80's and sound was provided by Gands Brothers.
It is rare chance to witness a part of history. Are you going to document more of this guitar?
Echo everything all the others say - a great presentation, by really lovely, relaxed and interesting people. Thank You
