I know this is an old video but this is just what I need. I've recently gone "down the rabbit hole" of sorts when I expressed to my cousin I'd be interested in shooting a competition at some point and all within a day or two I had a range membership, an IDPA membership, a new gun and equipment, and was told the next match is in not but a couple weeks from now. I've already been to the range to get acquainted with my equipment, now I just need to sponge up all the rules and procedures. I'm going to watch every video in this series.
USPSA shooter for a few years. Can't agree more with basically all of the advice you just gave. Shooting matches is fun and it makes a shooting hobby social and productive. Great video
Very well done sir - I just watched all 6 parts, I'm impressed and thankful for all the effort you put into this. It is a huge help to someone like myself getting ready to go to my first IDPA match. Thank you!!
I appreciate that youve addressed the difference between gaming and living. Id argue that taking IDPA too seriously is what will get you into trouble in life, because while competition introduces stress and exposes deficiencies, it also encourages corner cutting to work the clock - such as 'technical' use of cover and conditioning to see cover and concealment interchangeably, as well as unrealistic target selection strategies. In a real life scenario, a LOT of IDPA tactics are very reckless... and remember the old maxim that youll fight the way youve trained. That said, IDPA is a valuable training aid if you use it to validate your skills, but it becomes a detriment if you use it to validate yourself. As I tell new shooters looking for competitive shooting instruction: training with a weapon can be a lot of fun, but youll have a really bad time fighting for your life with sports equipment - decide what it is and dont expect it to work as anything else.
Enjoyed the video very much. I just joined IDPA, and shot a classifier match. I agree there are some rules that seem odd but I understand real world application for why those rules are in place. I upgraded to a new gun and while shooting static, I did very well. But under stress of competition, I realized my weaknesses with new gun and shooting skills I need to improve on. My score was poor, but was motivated to learn my firearm better, 'coz the last thang I want is to be keeled on tha street!
I do a fair amount of range time, but recently started thinking more about practical practice. It seems that working skills through IDPA would be a good step. So glad to have found your channel to get more info. Liked and subbed, now heading over to part two and beyond. Nice work!!!
Excellent! I prowl around youtube quite a bit, and I have to say that this is very well done... concise, yet informative, great video over the narration. I'm subscribing! I'm also newer to IDPA and this gives me a good boost! Well done!
I completely agree. After 4 years of competition I am now winning matches regularly Tomorrow I am Shooting IDPA at Central Florida Rifle & Pistol Club. I am proficient now and even my girlfriend can smoke the 6in rack at 10 yards. IDPA and Steel matches are my favorites
Nice to see support for the shooting sports. Personally I switched to uspsa using my edc rig. My reasoning for that was at my first local idpa match I was match disqualified for a "safety violation". My safety violation was not catching the mag and putting it in my pocket since it had a live round in it when I reloaded. Decided weird rules like that weren't for me and didn't bother coming back.
+David Strawser I long ago gave up on the both-eyes-open thing for long shots. If you shoot close-ups of a lot of shooters, you'll see that many very good shooters go one-eye for longer shots.
Walter, Great video. Not a ton of fluff, ho-hum , and blow hard discussion. Thanks, and I am anxious to see the next 3. Also, going to shoot my first IPDA this weekend. Wish me luck!
seems like in competition what you would really take away to the normal world be your handling of the weapon, movement and your shooting. ive never shot at one these before but when watching recaps of them online you notice that some of the stages are a little over the top for a self defense situation but i can imagine thats more just too increase the fun factor for example ive seen places do stages that are just like scenes from specific movies which i bet does make it really fun.......great video by the way
Thank you Sir, because of you (this video and the rest of the series) I took my 34 out to a match and had a lot of fun. I'm hooked. 20th out of 30. Not too bad.
Cool vid Walter. Nice overview for someone like me who is an average shooter who wants to learn. Seems like idpa is another world. Maybe your vids will help me close the gap!
I'm new to IDPA with 6 matches experience. This video is great and I'll get my friends to watch it. I'd like to see one with truly SENIOR people like myself who walk rather than run, can't squat down -- or can't get back up having done so -- and generally move like older people actually move. Thanks, Walter!
Hi Walter, Lino from Austria here. I love Forging, knifes, Swords (like europeans more than japanese but i like all the sharp steel). And i like Guns, i bought my selfe a Troy PAR, Pump Action Rifle, the other day, we have realy strict gun laws and i am not allowed to own a hjand gun for some years. (because i decided to serve my country as a medic and not as a soldier, thats the short story.) But when i am allowed to own a hand gun i would love to do sports like that. Love your channel, ty for the content.
I didn't know it was legal to say such intelligent things. Specifically it was interesting to hear you make the martial art comparison in regards to competition vs street conflicts. All my questions about this are answered, UNTIL I TRY IT
Thanks Walter, I shared this with some of our new shooters and it seemed to really help them. Keep up the good work, job well done. Glad to see you got bumped to master too. You need to try to make the Masters this year. Take care, DougJ.
Yeah being prior infantry, we did a lot of "Shoot houses" which is IDPA with rifles more or less. I would never say this isn't good training and anyone who does is as you say, a tactical timmy
A charity I support was the beneficiary of an match, so I paid the $50, joined, found a local qualifier (whatever its called) and shot the match. More rules than a nunnery. I thought the Army was the only one that could beat the fun out of shooting. They have so many possible penalties that there are penalties for the penalties.
I carried shoulder holster for the past.......forever. That's a forbidden item for rather obvious reasons in USPSA (IPSC), IDPA or most all other competitions. I just got a secondhand level 3 holster (major overkill), but a free $300 holster, from my girlfriend. I wonder how that might work for IDPA. I already have between 4 and 40 magazines for almost every gun I own, barring a few very tiny but wonderfully fun little Beretta & Browning pocket pistols. I have lived through a couple defensive shooting situations, without going to jail. Hospital? Yeah, I did go there.
That must be five rule books ago? I started shooting IDPA in 2000, and retention reloads were prevalent because the rules allowed the stage procedure to require them, but they were not otherwise required. If the chamber had a round in it at the reload, the mag had to be retained, but if the chamber was empty the mag could be left on the ground.
Competition adds stress to practice. I tell people all the time, being able to shoot a target at the range doesn't mean you can when you running, using cover and stressed.
I'm new to this IDPA shooting. (only done it 5 times) I can shoot all month, twice a week and get pretty good, much, much better then I was a year ago. I show the instructor and he says I'm doing real good, improving every week. But when it comes to match time I have a hard time making "clean" run on a stage. We are very small group, the instructor and his assistant are very informative. If I could just learn to forget about that timer. When that first buzzer goes I forget my fundamentals! Any suggestions?? They would be appreciated.
There are those of us who are not retired, that work 40 + hours every week, are community volunteers, and shoot only when we have the time and money to do so. (i.e. keep a roof over our heads, pay the bills, take care of the car) I couldn't compete even if I wanted to.
So I'm a gun nerd that needs help on replacing Japanese Type 30 bayonet grip panels. Started watching tons of your videos. Then came across these... :D
I used to shoot ESP and SSR. Never was that good, only made MM rating. But the nearest league was 2 hours drive away, and the leage president ended up doing a few shady things that earned him a lifetime ban from IDPA.
Another guy who had problems with the audio...tablet + headphones...not enough volume unless I was in a quiet room. Good intro video...will look at the rest.
Let's make it more "realistic" and ditch the fishing vests. Not only does it look stupid but how many guys are going out in public armed while wearing a fishing vest? Your so called "cover garment" should be something that you would actually wear while out in public. I've heard IDPA people say that a fishing vest is easier to flip out of the way when drawing. Really? And those are the same guys that rag on USPSA shooters for being gamers.
You don't have to wear a vest..you can wear whatever you want as your cover garment.. I personally wear an LA Police Gear Concealed Carry button up shirt (no longer sold...but I bought several when made)..to me these are perfect for IDPA and CCW..they are cut just right..and the side seams are held together with magnets at the bottom couple of inches..so when you go for your weapon, the side of the shirt breaks clear and easily..they look nice and functional.. Now..if I am at an IDPA match where the competition is stiff..I wear my 5.11 CCW vest..or a Scott vest or jacket made for CCW..this is just for competition sake for the extra advange. That being said, wear what you want, nobody says fishing vests are mandatory..wear a polo shirt, button down, hoodie, whatever works for you. It's great for experience and training..but if you like the competition aspects also..you will wear what gives you an edge.
+Sensaisean Unfortunately TH-cam's compression algorithms do weird stuff to audio. I mix the audio on headphones and the levels are fine and then after you upload...well, stuff happens!

Great video
By far the best introductory video I saw on the subject.
"I'm just an average joe, I compete twice a week, I was match director for several years, I'm Masters in multiple divisions..."
lol I shoot USPSA that résumé is far from average. A master level in anything is putting work in.
Very well done sir - I just watched all 6 parts, I'm impressed and thankful for all the effort you put into this. It is a huge help to someone like myself getting ready to go to my first IDPA match. Thank you!!

The only thing better is force on force training with mtx ammo
I really like IDPA, it keeps my skills up, and gets me a little more range time.
Enjoyed the video very much. I just joined IDPA, and shot a classifier match.
I agree there are some rules that seem odd but I understand real world application for why those rules are in place.

Competed years ago in IDPA and loved it.... Miss it and plan to do it again someday....
Man, I can't wait for Part 2. This was awesome Walter. Thanks for a great video.
I do a fair amount of range time, but recently started thinking more about practical practice. It seems that working skills through IDPA would be a good step. So glad to have found your channel to get more info. Liked and subbed, now heading over to part two and beyond. Nice work!!!
Greetings from Norway! I compete quite a lot in the "IPSC" style of competitive shooting. Both rifle and pistol. It is heaps of fun.
How is Norwegian law and ownership work? Can immigrants in Norway compete?
Excellent! I prowl around youtube quite a bit, and I have to say that this is very well done... concise, yet informative, great video over the narration. I'm subscribing! I'm also newer to IDPA and this gives me a good boost! Well done!
Nice introduction to IDPA, Walter. You're another great ambassador to the sport.
Great video. Helped me jump in and go to my first IDPA Comp and I love it! Thanks!
Really appreciate your insight on this topic! I honestly didn't know where to start.
Well said on the validity of practical competition. I tell people this all the time
I completely agree.

Me too. Good thing there is a great uspsa club nearby. Much prefer the lack of silly rules.
+Ahiraband Been a long time since you could get DQ-ed for that. But there are definitely a lot of guys who like the USPSA rule set.
Shooting without both eyes open, tisk tisk. ;) Glad to see people reaching out to grow the sport. Keep up the good work, and be safe, brother!
+David Strawser I long ago gave up on the both-eyes-open thing for long shots. If you shoot close-ups of a lot of shooters, you'll see that many very good shooters go one-eye for longer shots.
Thanks for the intro video. It was interesting and motivated me to continue the journey into IDPA.
Walter, Great video. Not a ton of fluff, ho-hum , and blow hard discussion. Thanks, and I am anxious to see the next 3. Also, going to shoot my first IPDA this weekend. Wish me luck!
Looking forward to my 1st IDPA shoot next month! Looks like a blast.

I really only need your third reason to do IDPA...
"Third.... It is fun as hell" haha
Cool vid Walter. Nice overview for someone like me who is an average shooter who wants to learn. Seems like idpa is another world. Maybe your vids will help me close the gap!

what you said! (can we wear elbow and knee pads?)
I see people with all kinds of gear on. I still couldn't kneel down though!

Great Content thanks for posting. Will watch the whole series today.
I found this very informative, thanks for creating and posting it.
@4:59. Dude drops his mag RIGHT in the trash. Lol 😎
5 yrs late but IF
idpa but why not include IWB conceal carry posture?
IWB is permitted under the rules. Check your local listings for any specifics at your range.
Great Info Sir! I appreciate ya & Carry On!
IDPA is a decent, entry level sport, and it's getting better.
USPSA is definitely the big leagues and a much deeper pond.
Love IDPA, but the group I shot with isn't doing IDPA anymore and the next nearest is a ways away.
Wow, when I was shooting IDPA, we never let magazines drop to the ground - it was always 'reload with retention'. I wonder when that changed?
Me too, I was match dq for not retaining.
Empty mags can hit the ground. Only need to retain mags with ammo still in them.
Never when I was shooting courses, empty, full or in between, all had to be retained.
Because that’s a stupid fucking rule and not realistic
That must be five rule books ago? I started shooting IDPA in 2000, and retention reloads were prevalent because the rules allowed the stage procedure to require them, but they were not otherwise required. Competition adds stress to practice. I tell people all the time, being able to shoot a target at the range doesn't mean you can when you running, using cover and stressed.
Do you know if a Walther PPQ will fit in the box for CCP, I've also added Trijicon HD sights?

My thought is to focus on accuracy first and the speed will come over time. My 4th IDPA match is on Monday.
like the video Sir!! very informative appreciate it.
Excellent intro!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been thinking about competing in IDPA matches, and never really knew the basic's.
Thanks for the video!
Walter can you do a Q and A?
thanks for the video Walter
There are those of us who are not retired, that work 40 + hours every week, are community volunteers, and shoot only when we have the time and money to do so. (i.e. keep a roof over our heads, pay the bills, take care of the car) I couldn't compete even if I wanted to.
loved it
Thank you! Excellent and clear
So I'm a gun nerd that needs help on replacing Japanese Type 30 bayonet grip panels. Started watching tons of your videos. Then came across these... :D
fun yeah and really very practical. can you imagine being in a gunfight and all you do is stand and shoot like cool without cover?
Great video. Remember tactical Timmy wont show up to a match and get embarrased. To busy watching breard grow and getting tatoos.
I used to shoot ESP and SSR. Never was that good, only made MM rating. But the nearest league was 2 hours drive away, and the leage president ended up doing a few shady things that earned him a lifetime ban from IDPA.
nice walter
Exposes equipment that just doesn't work = truth. Started with Ruger P95 and found it was two big for my hands.
i really liked that " bro what're you waitin on " hehehe
Subbed
You're the coolest man i know!
thanks a ton for this
Just what I was looking for 😎
cool looks like fun. The closest thing to it in uk is probably airsoft or paintball.
Funny, I should have guessed Walter would be into firearms but till now the thought never had occurred to me.
When are you doing the karambit
+blake dial Soon as I can! The tutorials for complete knife builds are insanely time consuming so I have to fit them into the rest of my schedule.
+Walter Sorrells thank you for getting back to me, can't wait to see it
Are u from Texas?
I think he got his three reasons in the wrong order. Number 1 reason is that's it's fun. God, I miss it.
Your my spirit animal
Karambit?
I just thought " Walter Sorels, Tips for the knife ma... oh wait" lolz
Interesting.
that was fun! 😀
Love it!
You truly are the most interesting man in the world
Stay thursty my friends
+Damon Aniton I feel like it's been ages since we've shot together!
Do more fun vids. This one as great and isn't a little kid screen about his tacticool ar with 20 attachments.
It is fun as hell. Haha best line ever and so damn true!

Plastic Apple from where I’m from, we call it a “shoot me first vest”
holy crap headphone warning like 15 seconds in. "Talking about shooting sports' != immediate cut to gunshots. >:(

Is it a prerequisite that you must be obese to participate in this sport?
Modest much?
ALSO I am not your damn brother.
BS. BS. BS. Meme
Need a new video, the rules have changed again.
